He was a member of the Blood (Kainai) First Nation, and a resource for Blackfoot culture, history, and language. He helped develop the Blood Tribe Agricultural Project, an irrigation program that produces high-quality hay for export.
As a young man, he worked as an oil-rig roughneck and a cowboy, making saddles by hand and competing in rodeos.
