- He held a bachelor's degree from Grinnell College, Grinnell, Iowa, and a master's degree from the University of South Dakota. He also received doctoral studies at the University of Minnesota and was a Assistant Professor of Theater Arts at the University of Missouri at Kansas City.
- While in Kansas City he was an artist in residence at University of Missouri, Kansas City where he was an actor and director in many Missouri Repertory Productions.
- He graduated from Montezuma Community High School, Montezuma, Iowa in 1958.

- He died Tuesday, August 6, 1996 at his home in Los Angeles, California where he had lived for 16 years. However, funeral services were held August 10, 1996 at Watts Funeral Home in his hometown of Montezuma, Iowa. Burial was in Jackson Township Cemetery, Montezuma, Iowa.
- He has three children: daughters Alison (with wife Vivien) and Soryl, and son Sean.
- He was the Artistic Director of the first full equity company of the Resident Theater in Kansas City, Missouri.
- He had a successful antique business. He also participated in the development of several screenplays.
- At the time of his death, he had a granddaughter Kennedy Stanley.
- He was preceded in death by his father Alvah Willard Stanley, Sr., but his mother Arlene Stanley of Montezuma, Iowa, survived him.
- He and his sister Sara Stanley established SAVElectronics of Denver, Colorado.
