Although The Walking Dead #163 doesn't hit shelves until February 1st, the special 25-cent issue (in honor of Image Comics' 25th anniversary) is already making a big splash by becoming the most ordered comic book in almost 20 years, with over 730,000 copies (and counting) pre-ordered so far.
Press Release: Image Comics partner and pop culture phenomenon Robert Kirkman and artist Charlie Adlard’s The Walking Dead #163 is the Direct Market’s highest ordered comic in nearly 20 years.
As final orders rolled in this week from Diamond Comic Distributors, The Walking Dead #163 pre-orders exceeded 730,000 copies—without the aid of subscription box numbers to bolster the overall total—making the goal of expanding readership through a promotional 25¢ price point an overwhelming success.

Mr. Khosla,
I read your piece “The Case Against Dan Didio.”
I’m rarely impressed, but you wrote an impressive article. The attention to detail, footnotes, research and overall thoughtfulness you put into making your case was indeed extraordinary.
I’m a bit taken aback by your use of my article as the motivation to write yours. My article why are we still complaining about Dan Didio had little written about Mr. Didio. It certainly wasn’t a defense of his work nor a damning of it. He and others mentioned were only used to illustrate my outlook.
Much of what you wrote regarding my views and work can do with a bit of clarity. I fear what you’ve constructed in your narrative is somewhat unbalanced and frankly unfair.
For example, placing quotes around a word when no one is speaking gives the distinct impression you don’t believe,...

My mom died thinking she threw away a copy of Superman number one from 1938.
Yes, I do indeed realize just how lame that must sound, and it would be if I gave a flying fish about that book with regards to my mother. I don’t but it’s important to the story I’m trying to write and just so I’m crystal clear, I’d happily burn the last copy left on Earth to spend just a minute more with my mother.
It was Superman number two she tossed out, and you can read the whole story entitled A Comic Book Tale on ComicMix.
I told her it was number one while trying to make the point that she should never throw out another comic book of mine, ever, and she never did. I have been keeping that my secret weapon for when I needed a real ‘gotcha’ to use on my mom.

Much like a child approached with dinosaurs and cookies, as soon as I heard about Alpha King — a new Image comic book series based on actual craft beer mascots — I screeched a little, bounced up and down, and demanded more. By some stroke of good luck I was able to speak with the legendary Brian Azzarello (100 Bullets, Hellblazer, Wonder Woman) about the process of “brewing” (ba dum ching) a story like this, which may or may not involve sitting drunk on a bar stool. Ace.
Famous Monsters. So, beer and comics are two of my favorite things in the entire world…
Brian Azzarello. Well, we have something in common! [laughs]
FM. I’m assuming your answer will be similar, but how was this project pitched to you, and what about it made you say yes?
BA. It was pitched over a bar stool! [laughs] I often agree to things I shouldn’t...

I gave up buying comics monthly basically two years ago. The New52 let me down. Marvel’s events didn’t grab my gaze either. With Marvel’s TV and movies being excellent alternatives, and DC’s archives of animated adventures at my beck and call, I was as comically sated as I needed to be. And seemingly, I’ve not missed much in the down time since.
And then, seemingly out of nowhere, a whole mess of news hit the wires. The two biggest ones to note: Eric Stephenson of Image Comics had the same rant Robert Kirkman had five years ago, and Grant Morrison, Warren Ellis, Garth Ennis, Alan Moore, and plenty of other big names have had prior to them. My ComicMix compatriot Molly Jackson covered it well. For those who are afraid of clicking? Stephenson came out to proclaim it was time to stop cutting corners for short term success,...

Last week was the ComicsPRO Members Meeting. In case you don’t know, this is a gathering of the comic industry, creators, and retailers to discuss the future of comics. A lot of interesting bits of news comes out of these meetings but one thing in particular really grabbed lot of attention. Image Comics head Eric Stephenson gave a speech encouraging change and growth for the industry.
You can read the entire transcript online, but some of the highlights included a look back to the history of comics, an encouragement in creativity, a discouragement of too many titles, and a call to think long-term. As he put it “If you – if any of us – are putting short-term needs ahead of long-term thinking: Stop. Stop stunting your own growth by doing things the way they’ve always been done.”
My favorite part of the speech still is “If you are a creator – a writer,...

Kurt Busiek is probably one of the biggest name in American comics. He started off doing freelance work for both DC and Marvel on titles like Iron Man, Avengers, and The Untold Tales of Spider-Man. In 1993, Busiek joined with superstar artist Alex Ross co-created the classic Marvels mini-series that showed the major events of the Marvel Universe from the perspective of photojournalist Phil Sheldon. From there, he created the long-running, award-winning Astro City series. Kurt Busiek is most notable for his humane approach to superheroes, making characters feel relatable despite their fantastical powers. In November 2014, Busiek teamed up rising art star Benjamin Dewey for The Autumnlands, a futuristic fantasy series about a world ruled by magic-using animal people that summon a human super soldier from the past to save the disappearing magic. However get more than they were bargaining for. The series is published by Image comics, and after a...

Airboy #1
Written by James Robinson
Art by Greg Hinkle
Published by Image Comics
Airboy, no matter how you slice it, it an utterly unique comic. When I first got ahold of it, I had no idea what I was getting into. The title sounded like some kind of fantasy adventure comic, Amy Reeder’s Rocket Girl for boys, maybe. If writer James Robinson (“The Starman Guy”) had played it straight, that might just be what we’d have ended up with. Instead, what we got was either an alarmingly frank portrait of Robinson bent on self destruction, a send up of self-serious autobiographical comics, or a speedball of both.
I played around with a few different ways of wrapping my head around Airboy while I was reading it. The Kaufmans’ Adaptation as a comic. A heroin snorting riff on Steven T. Seagle’s It’s a Bird… Then I reached...

Britain has a long, long history of staging comic conventions. The first one was held in a Birmingham hotel in 1968 which had a young Alan Moore as a guest. The success of the event paved the way for overseas guests to jump across the pond such as Frank Miller, Jim Steranko, and the late Gil Kane and appear at various events in the country.
As Ukcac became a well known convention amongst fans and creators across Britain. Held at various parts of the country, it was the stomping ground of various British creators, such guests included Will Eisner and John Buscema it gained recognition as convention organisers staged the prestigious Eagle Awards, which many Bronze age enthusiasts will recall Uncanny X-Men and Master of Kung Fu winning best dramatic comic book.

Many stories start at the beginning, but Goners, a new comic book series from Image Comics, begins at the end… the end of a family tragedy that leaves two people dead and two others hunted by supernatural forces ranging from ferocious phantoms to sharp-beaked Ekeks and many more malevolent monsters.
With issue #4 of this ambitious horror story hitting shelves today, I caught up with Goners co-creator/writer Jacob Semahn in a Q&A feature to discuss the wide-ranging influences (including John F. Kennedy’s assassination and Stephen King’s works) of his series, the often overlooked creatures lurking within the panels of Goners, what lies ahead for characters and readers alike, and much more. They’re Not Like Us #1
Story by Eric Stephenson

Modern storytelling really isn’t about doing something new. In the saturated media landscape we live in, new isn’t “the thing” we look for. “The thing” is taking an old story and finding a way to spin it; to give a story a hook that makes it unique and to tell it so well that no one cares if it’s something they’ve heard before, kind of like what Image Comics did with They’re Not Like Us.
A young girl, we’ll call her Syd, is standing on the edge of a building when issue one opens. Syd has a short conversation with a man in a suit and then jumps off the edge. End of page four. She later wakes in the hospital and eventually...

This past week I had the pleasure of interviewing Jacob Semahn, the writer on the upcoming supernatural mystery series Goners from Image Comics. Before working on Goners, Semahn was a producer on American Idol and So You Think You Can Dance. He is currently working in animation for Man of Action and has written screenplays for Marvel’s Avengers Assemble and Ultimate Spider-Man shows. The basic premise of Goners (from the Image Comics solicit) is a “bold new historical fantasy mystery about a very peculiar family, the Latimer Family, who have been humanity’s lone defense against paranormal assault throughout history”.

Marvel has announced that a new female Thor will debut in October - so what do comic book fans think?
High-profile figures in the comics world - from The Avengers director Joss Whedon to Image publisher Eric Stephenson - have been divided on the issue since Marvel revealed the twist.
But how do the people who really matter - the fans - feel? Digital Spy spoke to opinionated cosplayers at this year's Comic Con International in San Diego to find out.
Is the Thor gender-switch a stunt or the start of something bigger? Will the female version need to be written differently to her male counterpart?
Is this a sign that the comics world is growing more diverse - or is there still a need for "less white guys in the room"?
Which Marvel movies pass the Bechdel Test?

Announced at the Image Expo earlier this week, writer Scott Snyder and illustrator Jock will soon be joining forces once again to bring Wytches to Image Comics. The upcoming title marks Snyder’s return to Image since he worked on Severed and will have him returning to his horror roots with a new dark and twisted tale about mythological creatures.
“I think our goal is to just scare the living shit out of you with this book,” Snyder said at the Expo. “I want this book to be the blackest, most twisted horror that I’ve ever done. I want it to be the book I feel terrible about at my kids’ soccer game. I want this book to be like, you read it and say, ‘They let this guy write Superman?’”
Scott Snyder (Batman, Superman Unchained, Severed) and Jock (Batman, Wolverine, Snapshot) will team up for a new, ongoing horror series called Wytches.

First of all, the single most important thing we learned from comics and media coverage in general in 2013 is that people will read anything if it’s organized into a numbered list of bullet points.
Now, here are ten examples of why I loved sequential art last year.
1. Science is both awesome and terrifying.
The comic book reading public really discovered the joys of science this year, and the results have been fantastic. From Vertigo’s Federal Bureau Of Physics, a scattered adventure in anti-gravity and bubble universes, to the Discovery Channel-esque explorations of The Wake (Vertigo), physics and biology and chemistry have absolutely become “cool”—even the basis, once again, for science fiction stories about actual science. Rick Remender and Matteo Scalera recently floored us with the intense and no-holds-barred Black Science (Image), a kind of cautionary tale of multiple dimensions involving frog aliens and robot Indians and...

Well, it’s upon us once again, and not a moment too soon: the superlative annual comic convention Thought Bubble is back as part of both the Leeds International Film Festival and Comic Art Festival, with a signing tour currently wending its way across Britain and the main events happening this weekend at the Royal Armouries.
And, boy, is there a lot going on.
So I thought I’d put together a brief guide to my picks of the panels and events being put on over the weekend. This is by no means exhaustive, but hopefully (if your tastes are anything like mine) it’ll at least steer you in the right direction. If you’re at all disappointed by where I send you, I can be found yelling at Kieron Gillen and Jamie McKelvie for quitting Young Avengers…

A double bill of comic talk this week kicks off with Image’s Rocket Girl #1 by Brandon Montclare with art by Amy Reeder. 15 year old Dayoung Johansson, a member of the New York Teen Police Department who travels back in time from a futuristic 2013 to 1986 to rectify ‘crimes against time’ made in the past, centring around a group of scientists’ tinkering with ‘quintum mechanics’. That’s the plot at least. In reality, it’s a framework for some whimsical story-telling featuring a sassy time-travelling teen with a jetpack. And that’s fine with me. There’s wit in the writing, nice eighties references, some cracking artwork, cool sound effects and pleasing panel distribution. The emphasis here is on style, rather than substance and that’s okay. I can see the time travel plot getting a little predictable (I’m betting right now that Dayoung’s presence...

There's always one day during the Sdcc when you just shake your head, laugh, and say, "This schedule is ridiculous." Saturday, July 20th, is shaping up to be that day this year.
Horror fans will have a lot of choices to make as the "Bates Motel" panel battles the one-two punch of Godzilla and Seventh Son. Later in the day you'll be faced with choosing to learn more about "True Blood," Telltale's The Walking Dead video game, or "Being Human." Right now 20th Century Fox's presentation that runs at the same time remains "To Be Announced," but once details are revealed, we'll provide an update.
Other panels vying for your attention throughout the day are "The Originals," "Grimm," I, Frankenstein teamed with The Hunger Games: Catching Fire (that combination should make for some interesting audience reactions), a look at gameplay from Dead Rising 3 on the Xbox One, more games, comics,...

Robert Kirkman has confirmed that The Walking Dead will be getting a little color injected in its deathly grey (well, black and white) palette. In honor of the tenth anniversary of the ongoing series’ debut, The Walking Dead #1 will be re-released with Tony Moore‘s original black and white artwork inked in color.
According to BleedingCool.com, the announcement was made by Kirkman during a panel discussion that included the Walking Dead mastermind and Image Comics publisher Eric Stephenson at the Image Comics Expo in San Francisco.
Since its debut ten years ago, The Walking Dead has grown into a massive multimedia franchise that includes webisodes, toys, board and video games, and the ultra-successful AMC television show, The Walking Dead. Now at issue #111, the tenth anniversary re-release will be the first Walking Dead comic to be published in full color.

Young Avengers #5, Kieron Gillen, Jamie McKelvie, Marvel
The conclusion of Gillen & McKelvie’s first arc sees the proper (re)formation of the teen team, a revelation or two about new addition Kid Loki (inherited from Kieron Gillen’s recently-concluded Journey Into Mystery run) and of course a couple of innovatively-rendered fight scenes from Jamie McKelvie, who somehow manages to turn a pentagram into an incredibly effective And plot-related page layout. Not that it’s the only thing worth reading in the book. Every once in a while I step back and say to myself, why are there so many people reading superhero books (which can be brilliant, but medicore just as often) when they could be digesting genius like Image Comics’ Nowhere Men?
The third issue of this spectacular Sci-Fi soup of weirdness came out this week and served to convince me that, as the book has said many times, “Science Is the new rock and roll.” There is a Scientific Fab Four: Simon Grimshaw, Emerson Strange, Thomas Walker, and Dade Ellis. They forge “WorldCorp”, a titan in both innovation and shady testing sequences over the years whose inventions consist of everything from artificial intelligence to elevated means of transportation.
Not everything is what it seems. There have been “test subjects” dying of a virus on a space station who have now teleported to various locations and have no idea how to get anywhere.

Image Comics has backtracked on its decision to issue no more reprints on popular titles. The publisher has said that it will reprint Brian K Vaughan and Fiona Staple's Saga #7. Previously, marketing director Jennifer de Guzman had said that the publisher would stop offering reprints on certain titles which retailers were consistently underordering, despite the company overprinting the issues. "Believe it or not, we listen to you," wrote publisher Eric Stephenson in an open letter. "Just as you use the information provided to you by your customers to place orders for our comics, we use the information we get from you to set our print runs. Like you, we modify the numbers a little bit. "We always assume there will be reorders and we make sure to overprint.
