HBO's Game of Thrones prequel series, House of the Dragon, returned for its second season this week, and the premiere revealed that Queen Alicent Hightower (Olivia Cooke) and Lord Commander of the Kingsguard Ser Criston Cole (Fabien Frankel) had begun to engage in an illicit affair.
We see a couple of sex scenes involving these characters over the course of the episode, but Cooke has now revealed that a far more graphic and "animalistic" sequence ended up being cut by co-creator Ryan Condol because he felt it didn't advance the story or develop the characters in any meaningful way.
“It was messy as f*ck. It wasn’t beautiful, and that was really fun to do,” Cooke tells Elle Magazine. “I think Ryan said we weren’t learning any more about the characters, which I disagree with slightly, but it’s Ok. It’s his show.”

The first episode of House of the Dragon season 2 is now streaming on Max, and in typical Game of Thrones fashion, the prequel series returned to our screens with a shocking character death.
Now, the streamer has now released a new "weeks ahead" trailer featuring some big hints about what's to come.
Spoilers follow.
The teaser sees King Aegon officially declare war on the Black Queen Rhaenyra Targaryen after discovering that his beloved son Jaehaerys has been brutally murdered by the assassins known as Blood and Cheese. We also see Rhaenyra admonish Daemon for giving the order, noting that his actions have only weakened her claim to the throne.
As for the son Rhaenyra actually wanted dead, we hear Aemond Targaryen say that he "welcomes" a one-on-one fight with his uncle Daemon (something tells us he should be careful what he wishes for).

The second season of “House of the Dragon” began filming in April of 2023 and premiered on June 16, 2024. The award-winning TV series is based on George R.R. Martin‘s novel “Fire & Blood” and is set approximately 200 years before the events of parent series “Game of Thrones.” While the first season told the story of House Targaryen over the span of several decades and thus incorporated several time jumps, the second season will reportedly take place fully in one time period (which means no more confusing cast changes).
Returning series regulars from Season 1 include Matt Smith, Emma D’Arcy, Olivia Cooke, Rhys Ifans, Eve Best, Steve Toussaint, Fabien Frankel, Ewan Mitchell, Tom Glynn-Carney and Sonoya Mizuno. Also back are recurring cast members Harry Collett, Bethany Antonia, Phoebe Campbell, Phia Saban, Jefferson Hall and Matthew Needham. "I want Aemond Targaryen."
Consumed by grief after the death of her son Lucerys Velaryon (Elliot Grihault) in the season 1 finale, Rhaenyra Targaryen's (Emma D'Arcy) only line in the season 2 premiere of House of the Dragon is an admission of a desire for vengeance, which her husband and uncle, Prince Daemon (Matt Smith), is more than happy to deliver.
While most of the episode is spent in King's Landing with Queen Alicent Hightower (Olivia Cooke) attempting to keep her own family under control, the last ten minutes focus on two characters who should be very familiar to fans of George R.R. Martin's Fire and Blood.
Daemon enlists a member of the Gold Cloaks with a disdain for the Hightowers ("Blood") and a rat-catcher with gambling debts who knows his way around the Red Keep ("Cheese") to kill Aemond. When Cheese asks what they should do if they can't find the one-eyed warrior,...

One of the gray figures in the prequel to Game of Thrones, House of the Dragon, is Queen Rhaenyra Targaryen. One of Rhaenyra’s many redeeming qualities, as portrayed by Emma D’Arcy, is her love and concern for her children. That’s one of the reasons the Season 1 conclusion of House of the Dragon was so heartbreaking. Even Ewan Mitchell, who plays Aemond, knows that Rhaenyra raised her kids right.
Ewan Mitchell would want Rhaenyra as his mom
Ever since House of the Dragon began production, fans have been comparing Alicent and Rhaenyra on several different parameters. One of the hotly debated ones is their abilities as a mother. When asked who would they prefer as their mom in real life in an interview with Igv, Mitchell replied:
“I don’t think Alicent did a very good job. I will put my arms up and say… I’d say Rhaenyra.

This post contains spoilers for "House of the Dragon" season 1.
The terrifying shadow of war looms large over the Targaryens in HBO's "House of the Dragon," and if things weren't already dire, they're about to get much worse. The show's season 1 finale ended on a rather grim note. After both Aemond (Ewan Mitchell) and Lucerys (Elliot Grihault) approach the Baratheons for an alliance and the latter is denied support, a tense chase ensues on dragonback where Aemond and Vhagar hound Lucerys and Arrax. Although Aemond simply intended this chase to be an intimidation tactic, his dragon defies him and devours Lucerys and Arrax, leaving a devastated Rhaenyra (Emma D'Arcy) enraged and ready for war. Up until that point, the ever-evolving familial in-fighting and political scheming had already created a schism within House Targaryen, but this final, unintended tragedy propels everyone involved into a dark, violent period that is bound to...

HBO has renewed “House of the Dragon” for a third season, even before the second season’s premiere on June 17. This “Game of Thrones” spinoff series, co-created by Ryan Condal and George R.R. Martin, has been a major success for the network.
It recorded the largest premiere audience ever for an original series on HBO and HBO Max, averaging 29 million viewers per episode across both linear and streaming platforms. The show was quickly renewed for a second season just a week after its debut.
“House of the Dragon” is based on Martin’s book “Fire & Blood” and chronicles the history of the Targaryen dynasty in Westeros, set nearly 200 years before the events of “Game of Thrones” and about 100 years after the Targaryens unified the Seven Kingdoms.
The returning cast for Season 2 includes Matt Smith, Olivia Cooke, Emma D’Arcy, Eve Best, Steve Toussaint, Fabien Frankel, Ewan Mitchell, Tom Glynn-Carney, Sonoya Mizuno and others.
It recorded the largest premiere audience ever for an original series on HBO and HBO Max, averaging 29 million viewers per episode across both linear and streaming platforms. The show was quickly renewed for a second season just a week after its debut.

HBO‘s sophomore season of House of the Dragon doesn’t premiere until Sunday, but the network is ready to announce Season 3 today! This announcement is an amoosbouche for the carnage, incest, and backstabbing to come when Season 2 launches this weekend. Word about HBO greenlighting House of the Dragon Season 3 is hardly a surprise, considering the show’s overwhelming success. In addition to attracting new fans to the epic familial drama series, many who wrote off Game of Thrones after an underwhelming final season have caved to the Fomo and embraced the star-studded spinoff.
House of the Dragon is based on George R.R. Martin’s “Fire & Blood,” set 200 years before the events of Game of Thrones, and focuses on the House Targaryen.
After a significant death in House of the Dragon Season 1, Rhaenyra and Alicent are ready to go to war, trading “blood for blood” and burning oppressors where they stand.

Send the ravens! Not only is civil war embroiling the entire continent of Westeros as a bunch of weird, blonde-haired, incest-loving white people fight over control of a big seat with a bunch of swords melted on it, but the epic story is now set to continue for the foreseeable future. Mere days before season 2 of "House of the Dragon" is scheduled to premiere later this week, HBO announced that it has officially renewed the hit "Game of Thrones" spin-off/prequel series for a third season (presumably) full of even more fire and blood.
The show is based on author George R.R. Martin's fictional historical retelling of the greatest threat to ever overwhelm the Targaryen dynasty, titled "Fire & Blood," and there's certainly plenty of material to sustain at least another season. Things get a little trickier after that, however, should the network be inclined to keep the violent, good times rolling.

Demonstrating the formidable strength of HBO’s “Game of Thrones” empire, the network has renewed “House of the Dragon” for Season 3, in advance of its Season 2 premiere on June 16.
The “Game of Thrones” spinoff series — co-created by Ryan Condal and “Thrones” author George R.R. Martin — has proven to be a fire-breathing hit for the network. The show enjoyed the biggest premiere audience ever for an original series for both HBO and HBO Max (now Max), and the first season averaged 29 million viewers an episode over linear and streaming. It was renewed for Season 2 just one week following its series premiere.

Ahead of Sunday’s Season 2 premiere, HBO has confirmed it has renewed House of the Dragon for a third season.

House of the Dragon S2 Will Explore Aemond's 'Shadow Side', Says Actor Ewan Mitchell - Main Image
Fans have seen Aemond Targaryen as a major villain in House of the Dragon after his dragon, Vhagar, kills Arrax and its master, Lucerys Velaryon, in the first season finale.
Despite this negative connotation given to Aemond, Ewan Mitchell teases his character will “surprise people” in the upcoming House of the Dragon Season 2.

Aemond didn’t see the death of Lucerys and Arrax coming as he and his dragon, Vhagar, chased the two.
Aemond and Lucerys lost control of their dragons, with Arrax breathing fire on Vhagar against Lucerys’ protest.
But just when Lucerys thought they were safe after regaining control of Arrax and commanding him to fly over the storm clouds, an enraged Vhagar appeared, bit Arrax in pieces, and ate Lucerys whole.

It’s still early to say what the future will hold for yet another spinoff of Game of Thrones, but the universe’s actors appear to have already signed up for the project in their heads should they indeed be officially cast.
George R.R. Martin’s fantasy franchise has recently been keeping busy developing House of the Dragon and A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, with the latter being in the early works right now, but the universe surely has bigger plans for its expansion. With more characters’ stories receiving vaster attention than expected, Game of Thrones’ franchise may soon introduce a spinoff of a spinoff.
As House of the Dragon is set to continue its extremely successful TV run for several years to come, one of its characters might be getting his own show, but in a very weird way.

HBO's Game of Thrones prequel series, House of the Dragon, returns for its second season in ten days, and the review embargo has now lifted.
Though most critics got to see all 8 episodes, some only got the first 2, which should be taken into account when reading through these verdicts.
Though reviews are still coming in, House of the Dragon season 2 currently sits at a very impressive 92% on Rotten Tomatoes.
"Approaching its dynastic cataclysm with a deliberate stride rather than a charging gallop, House of the Dragon carefully sets up its emotional stakes to make the fiery spectacle all the more scorching," reads the Critics Consensus.
The cast - particularly Emma D'Arcy as Rhaenyra Targaryen - come in for universal praise, as does the production values, VFX and intense action sequences (it sounds like season 2 ups the gore quota considerably), but some seem to feel that the story has a few issues,...

With the release of House of the Dragon’s second season just around the corner, actor Steve Toussaint took the opportunity to discuss Lord Corlys Velaryon’s role in the upcoming season on ABC News. He also shared a few poignant words about the importance of representation in the sci-fi and fantasy genres, a topic that resonates deeply with many fans. The hectic inaugural season of House of the Dragon covered roughly 20 years as the long-standing peace under King Viserys came to an end. In the season’s final two episodes, the series found its footing, establishing the parallel claims to the throne between the Black faction that follows Viserys’s appointed heir, daughter Rhaenyra Targaryen (Emma D’Arcy), and the Green faction under Rhaenyra’s former best friend, Alicent Hightower (Olivia Cooke), who follow Alicent and Viserys’s young, impetuous son Aegon II (Tom Glynn-Carney).
All the table setting and time jumping that dominated the better part of the first season have, perhaps inevitably, set the stage for a much stronger second season for House of the Dragon. It’s also, especially for a Game of Thrones property, surprisingly restrained. The first four episodes made available to press cover only a few weeks, and the entire opening episode, “A Son for a Son,...

“House of the Dragon” showrunner Ryan Condal describes the second season of HBO’s “Game of Thrones” prequel as a “cold war in process.”
“And that’s really because of the dragons,” Condal told Variety at the Season 2 premiere Monday night in New York City. “Everybody’s terrified of launching mutually assured destruction and burning down the kingdom that they’re trying to rule over.”
“House of the Dragon” Season 2 will continue to chronicle the royal succession civil war, known as the Dance of Dragons, between two rival factions of House Targaryen: the greens and the blacks.
“I think I was most excited to explore the exchange of power,” Olivia Cooke said of her character, Alicent Hightower. “She was at the height of her power come the end of Season 1, and now her son’s on the throne, making her the Queen Dowager. I don’t think she’s really...

After the long wait of nearly two years, our favorite epic fantasy political drama is back, and this time with even more dragons. It has been more than five years since Game of Thrones ended and no other series has been able to replace the hole it left in the television space until its prequel series House of the Dragon came out to reclaim its fans and apologize to its fans for the terrible Season 8 of Got. Now we are finally getting the second season of the fan-favorite HBO series.
Based on Fire & Blood by author George R. R. Martin, the HBO series is created by Ryan Condal and R. R. Martin. House of the Dragon’s story is set 200 years before the events of Game of Thrones and it follows the story of a devastating war of succession between two Targaryen siblings after the death of their father. House of the Dragon is returning for Season 2 and the cast is teasing what viewers can expect when the show returns to HBO on June 16.
Emma D’Arcy, Olivia Cooke, and Matt Smith talked to Deadline and teased what is ahead for the fantasy drama, with Smith revealing that the show will be more like its older sibling.
For Cooke, who plays Queen Alicent Hightower, returning for the second season of the George R.R. Martin-created series was like a homecoming.
“We know the characters inside out, and we’re sort of going back home, in a way,” Cooke told us. “We’re not afraid of the text or afraid of the big sets that are sort of home away from home.”
Cooke teases that in Season 2, Queen Alicent Hightower leaves the castle with the actor saying, “That was huge for me. I went to Spain. I went to Wales and I went to Surrey.

With the death of King Viserys and Prince Lucerys in House of the Dragon season 1, both factions are grieving as we dive into the next season. Emotions are spilling over the edge on both sides even as they gear up for war. Daemon Targaryen, who needs to be a rock for his wife Rhaenyra, is himself falling apart as the past catches up to him.
Matt Smith claims that Daemon acts like a crazy person in the upcoming season as he is struggling to feel grief and come to terms with his brother’s death. The power struggle is secondary since in hindsight, Viserys always trusted and had confidence in Daemon. Having lost him, Daemon also feels a bit hazy about his future.

Relationships are not the strongest suit when it comes to the morally grey characters in House of the Dragon. Still, we do come across couples who do manage to stand the test of time. Due to the several time jumps we have observed since the start of the series, House of the Dragon is rapidly approaching a full-fledged civil war involving the now-adult characters. This is significant since the tale that the television show is based on is really a few decades into the battle between the Greens and the Blacks, and the time jumps facilitate this. However, we won’t have them in Season 2.

If Game of Thrones was gory, s*xually explicit, and filled with n*dity and booze then wait for the House of the Dragon Season 2, as Olivia Cooke said, it has crossed the line of its sequel show. House of the Dragon Season 2 has been one of the highly anticipated television shows after the success of season 1, which gave chills to the bones to the devout fans of the saga.
