Four years ago, Erica Tremblay's Little Chief provided a fascinating sketch in little more than ten minutes. Through smart writing and direction, not to mention Lily Gladstone's performance in the lead, the short conveys a complex sociopolitical milieu while also insinuating a whole lot about its characters' situation. Their lives stretch beyond the narrative frame, and we can grasp them even if their particularities elude the viewer. As a cineaste's calling card, Little Chief is a tremendous little thing, far from innovative yet promising great features in its maker's future. And so it is, and so has happened, with Fancy Dance fulfilling that pledge.
Not that this feature debut is exclusively a proof of Tremblay's potential. It's much more, including one hell of a showcase for Lily Gladstone...

The parade of smaller independent features continues to bump up against the blockbusters as the Summer continues to sizzle. Here’s a quirky drama that has similar themes to the modestly budgeted period piece from last weekend The Bikeriders. In that film, a group of motley outsiders in the early 60s forged a family via a motorcycle club. Family is at the forefront of this film, though it’s set in the modern day, and rather than Windy City bikers, we’re given a look inside Native American culture. Oh, and as in the former flick, the principals are often living on the “wrong side” of the law, having to dodge the authorities, giving an added meaning to its title, Fancy Dance.
The story takes us inside the world of thirty-something Jax (Lily Gladstone) and her teenage niece Roki (Isabel DeRoy-Olson) who share a home on the Seneca-Cayuga Nation Reservation in Oklahoma.

“Fancy Dance,” the latest film featuring Oscar-nominated actor Lily Gladstone, is making waves for its authentic portrayal of contemporary Indigenous life and subtle LGBTQ+ representation. The movie, now playing in select theaters and streaming on AppleTV+ from June 28, offers a rare glimpse into modern Native American experiences.
Directed by Erica Tremblay, who identifies as a queer Native American woman, “Fancy Dance” centers on Gladstone’s character Jax, who searches for her missing sister while caring for her young niece Roki (Isabel DeRoy-Olson). The film tackles the serious issue of Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, a prevalent concern in Native communities.
In an interview with CinemaBlend, Tremblay discussed the collaborative process of crafting Jax’s character with Gladstone, who uses they/she pronouns. “Lily based a lot of Jax off of two of her male cousins,” Tremblay revealed, emphasizing their aim to create a character whose queerness is an integral part...

The Lodge and Goodnight Mommy filmmakers Veronika Franz and Severin Fiala are back this week with the ultra-bleak The Devil’s Bath, arriving on Shudder this Friday, and the filmmakers are already hard at work on their next feature: an adaptation of author Paul Tremblay’s knockout novel A Head Full of Ghosts.
The adaptation was announced earlier this year and will be directed by Franz and Fiala and produced by Robert Downey Jr.
A Head Full of Ghosts sees a young woman recount to a journalist the terrifying story of how her family was publicly ripped apart 20 years prior by her teenage sister’s mysterious affliction. The story “follows the Barretts, whose normal suburban New England life is torn apart when their teenage daughter shows signs of acute schizophrenia, reluctantly leading them to be the subjects of a reality show, ‘The Possession.’ Some 15 years later, Merry faces her family’s...

The indie drama Fancy Dance directed by Erica Tremblay has a storyline that cuts deep into the personal experiences of Indigenous people. Tremblay brings a rich narrative featuring her community, focusing on themes of disappearance, survival, and resilience, often using humor as a coping mechanism. Lily Gladstone’s Portrayal of Jax Lily Gladstone, who portrays Jax, brings remarkable depth to the role. Her character’s journey in searching for her missing sister is intertwined with her responsibilities toward her niece, Roki. The portrayal is highly personal for many viewers, as Gladstone notes, You would be very hard pressed to find any Indigenous...

Native American stories on screen are still few and far between. Martin Scorsese’s Killers Of The Flower Moon was a welcome addition to the canon last year, and now hot on its heels comes Fancy Dance, an assured narrative-feature debut from Native American writer-director Erica Tremblay. The common denominator between both movies is actor Lily Gladstone. But where Scorsese’s movie arguably moved the focus away from the Indigenous community as it progressed, this film puts both that community and the Oscar-nominated actor firmly in the spotlight.
It’s Tremblay’s attention to the details of the Seneca-Cayuga Reservation in Oklahoma, where Fancy Dance is set (and where she grew up), that pays dividends here. Beautifully shot by cinematographer Carolina Costa, we’re presented with an unvarnished, lived-in portrait of Native American life, including but not limited to dialogue that seamlessly switches between Cayuga and English, at times mid-conversation.

The upcoming Apple TV+ film Fancy Dance, now playing in theaters before its streaming release on June 28th, is the type of unromanticized character study that should be celebrated. Seen through a double feminist and cultural safety lens, Fancy Dance is patient in the way the character study unfolds, sneaking up on you with its modern-day tale of colonialism still ongoing in America today.
Academy Award-nominated and Golden Globe-winning actress Lily Gladstone is at the center of the story. The Indigenous actress gives a convincing performance as a woman who embodies strength and resilience with an unwavering and calm demeanor when seen. However, when alone, she displays the type of private vulnerability that packs a poignant punch to a sometimes stagnant story.

It’s not often you see a backroom lap dance where the customer emits more apathy than the stripper. But when Jax (Lily Gladstone) hands a few extra $20s to a dancer who offers to grind on her for free, it’s clear that she has little interest in titillations of any kind. After a few moments, she zones out and directs her attention to the litany of more pressing issues in her life.
She’s had a lot on her mind in the weeks since her sister went suspiciously missing from the Seneca-Cayuga reservation. In addition to begging federal law enforcement agencies to feign interest in finding the lost woman and trying to figure out what information her friends on the tribal police force are withholding from her, she also has a pre-teen girl to raise. When it comes to the creative partnership of writer/director Erica Tremblay (“Reservation Dogs”) and Oscar-nominated actor Lily Gladstone (“Killers of the Flower Moon”) — two Native American artists from the Seneca-Cayuga Nation and Blackfeet Nation, respectively — it all started with Tremblay’s Sundance-premiering short, “Little Chief” (2020), inspired by Tremblay’s mother, Sharon.
“I shot it at the school in my community where my mom taught for many years,” Tremblay recently told IndieWire, in a joint interview with Gladstone. “That story felt like a love letter to my mom, and I was drawn to telling more stories about women like Sharon.”
That longing birthed the idea of Jax, one of the central heroines of “Fancy Dance,” Tremblay’s confident and powerful narrative feature debut that premiered in Sundance last year and recently found a distribution home at Apple TV+; landing that distribution deal had much to do with Gladstone’s own...

Erica Tremblay’s Fancy Dance is a sunshine noir set on the Seneca-Cayuga reservation of the filmmaker’s people in Oklahoma. The place is a food desert where there are few jobs for people, who have tense relations with nearby non-indigenous communities. Economic precarity and the residents’ uneasy relationship with federal governance is legible just about everywhere you look, and Tremblay’s granular attention to place makes sure that you take note.
The reservation’s residential areas mostly consist of mobile homes or Levittown-style basic housing, and the interiors of those spaces look frozen in the 1980s: all thick carpet, bulky furniture, and cathode-ray televisions. Carolina Costa’s stark, brightly lit cinematography calls attention to the harsh conditions of life on the reservation, with run-down stores littering dusty, inarable land like outposts of a frontier long ago mapped and exploited of resources by others. Horror author Paul Tremblay joins your horror hosts Kimmi & Jon on this week’s episode of Nightmare on Film Street to discuss his newest work Horror Movie: A Novel. Available everywhere spooky books are sold, Horror Movie: A Novel is pure Found Fiction about a cursed movie, never released to the public following the disturbing events of its production back in 1993. But now that a big budget reboot is underway the sole surviving member of the original crew must face the horrors of the past again…
Paul Tremblay’s previous novel The Cabin At The End of The World was recently adapted by M Night Shyamalan for Knock At The Cabin and his breakout A Head Full of Ghosts is currently in development. Horror Movie: A Novel takes inspiration from those ventures in the Hollywood system but it also serves as a vehicle for Tremblay to talk about his own obsessions with horror movies.

Horror author Paul Tremblay developed a deep love of spooky stories early on, and he tackles the haunted films genre with his newest novel, “Horror Movie” (out Tuesday via William Morrow and Company). The plot concerns a ’90s cult classic horror movie which left all but one cast member dead and the dark stories that are dredged up as a remake comes closer to reality.
Professionally, Tremblay is no stranger to scary movies, as his 2019 novel “The Cabin at the End of the World” was adapted into M. Night Shyamalan’s 2023 film “Knock at the Cabin.” Next up is an adaptation of his 2015 book “A Head Full of Ghosts,” which is set to be produced by Robert Downey Jr. and directed by Austrian filmmakers Veronika Franz and Severin Fiala, who also helmed dark horror films like “Goodnight Mommy” and “The Lodge.”

M. Night Shyamalan is a fellow of many talents. 25 years after his breakout success "The Sixth Sense" and the man can still throw a curveball like nobody's business, as evidenced by the twisty premise for his upcoming Josh Hartnett vehicle "Trap" (watch the trailer). The maestro of low-budget horror-driven thrillers also has a knack for sending Film Twitter into a frenzy with his boldly divisive work, with 2023's "Knock at the Cabin" being but the latest example.
Adapted from Paul G. Tremblay's 2018 novel "The Cabin at the End of the World," Shyamalan's entry in the tradition of cabin-based horror movies follows a small family -- two dads and their young daughter -- as their vacation is interrupted by a group of home invaders. As it turns out, these strangers might just be the actual Horsemen of the Apocalypse, having shared visions of a world-ending catastrophe that led them to this place.

The Devil’s Bath – the latest genre movie from Veronika Franz and Severin Fiala, the directing duo behind the disturbing horror films Goodnight Mommy (the original, not the Naomi Watts remake) and The Lodge – has been acquired by Shudder, with the streaming service planning to release it in North America, the U.K., Ireland, Australia, and New Zealand on June 28th. With that date just a few weeks away, Shudder has released a trailer for the film… and oddly, they chose to release it through the Letterboxd X account first, as you can see below. Lily Gladstone has been putting her feet up.
You’d be forgiven for assuming that Gladstone — the first Native American actress to have been nominated for an Academy Award — has a lot on her plate. And she has, but at home in Seattle, post-Oscars, she’s spent some well-earned time on the sofa, specifically watching The Bear Season 2. She’s not likely to be hanging around watching Carmy in his Chicago kitchen for too long, though.

Marianne Metivier’s debut feature “The Splendour of Life” (“Une splendeur de vivre”) is set to start principal photography at locations across Canada and the Philippines, the producers revealed at the Cannes Film Festival.
The ensemble cast includes Camille Rutherford (“Anatomy of a Fall”), Garance Marillier (“Raw”), Sue Prado (“Your Mother’s Son”), Kyrie Samodio (“Hito”) and Amaryllis Tremblay (“Genesis”).
Set against a lush countryside backdrop, Marie (Rutherford) questions her relationship, while Noée (Marillier) grieves her father. In a stifling Montreal, Eva (Kyrie Samodio) searches for stability as Jeanne (Tremblay) plans her departure.
Canadian-Filipino Metivier won acclaim for her short “She Who Wears the Rain” that was selected for the Berlinale Short Film Competition in 2020.
Geneviève Gosselin-g. of Canada’s Le Foyer Films, known for “Richelieu”, partners with Alexa Rivero of France’s Altamar Films (Venice 2021 winner “The Great Movement”) and Wilfredo Manalang of the Philippines’ Fusee Media (Cannes 2022 winner “Plan 75”), as producers.

The official trailer for Apple TV+’s Fancy Dance sees Lily Gladstone’s Jax on a mission to find her missing sister, as the risk of losing custody of her niece, Roki (Isabel Deroy-Olson), looms.
Following her sister’s disappearance, Jax and Roki have been scraping by on the Seneca-Cayuga reservation in Oklahoma, according to the film’s description. As Roki prepares for the upcoming powwow, the women hit the road to try to find Roki’s mother in time for the event.
“What begins as a search gradually turns into a far deeper investigation into the complexities and contradictions of Indigenous women moving through a colonized world while at the mercy of a failed justice system,” the logline reads.
Gladstone and Deroy-Olson star alongside Ryan Begay, Crystle Lightning, Audrey Wasilewski and Shea Whigham.
Fancy Dance premiered to critical acclaim at 2023’s Sundance Film Festival but didn’t receive distribution until over a year later.

Rebecca Ferguson’s unbound potential was explored and exploited long before she found an outlet in Denis Villeneuve’s Dune films. Her authority over the craft made her a sensational and sought-after talent in Hollywood almost overnight after hard launching into the action blockbuster genre with Tom Cruise’s Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation in 2015.

A couple months ago, we learned that The Devil’s Bath – the latest genre movie from Veronika Franz and Severin Fiala, the directing duo behind the disturbing horror films Goodnight Mommy (the original, not the Naomi Watts remake) and The Lodge – had been acquired by Shudder, with the streaming service planning to release it in North America, the U.K., Ireland, Australia, and New Zealand sometime this summer. Now we know the exact release date. The Devil’s Bath will be available to stream on Shudder as of June 28th.
The Devil’s Bath – which has been described as “utterly harrowing”, “chilling”, and “impactful” – is a German-language film that is set in 1750 Austria, at a time when villages were surrounded by deep forests. There, a deeply religious woman has married her beloved, but her mind and heart soon grow heavy as her life becomes a long list of chores and expectations. Day after day,...

Now that awards season has come to an end and the dust has settled, it’s time to reflect on the past 10 or so months. There can only be a select group of actors who walk away with an Academy Award each year. For those who may be disappointed that Lily Gladstone failed to take home the Oscar for Best Actress for her performance in “Killers of the Flower Moon,” fear not. While she may not have won the biggest prize, she still wound up winning awards season.
Gladstone, who has shared the fact they are nonbinary and uses both she/they pronouns, has clearly had a massive breakout year. Let us count the ways here:

Erica Tremblay, the Native American filmmaker who made her directorial debut with the Sundance title Fancy Dance, starring Lily Gladstone of Killers of the Flower Moon fame, has signed with CAA for representation.
The filmmaker, from the Seneca-Cayuga Nation, worked on FX series Reservation Dogs as a writer and director. Tremblay saw Fancy Dance, after a year’s delay, get picked up by Apple Original Films after its Sundance premiere and ahead of a release in theaters and on Apple TV+ later this year.
Set in northeastern Oklahoma’s Indian Country, Fancy Dance is based on Tremblay’s original screenplay co-written with Miciana Alise and centers on a young woman’s disappearance from a reservation and her family’s urgent attempts to locate her.
In Nov. 2023, Tremblay and Alise co-wrote a guest column for The Hollywood Reporter talking about the film’s struggle to find distribution. “Our film premiered in...

For over a year, director Erica Tremblay’s acclaimed Sundance drama “Fancy Dance” went undistributed without a means to see it. Its star Lily Gladstone, Oscar-nominated for another Native American-led film, “Killers of the Flower Moon,” has taken time from her awards campaign to champion the film and urge anyone in Hollywood to support it and give it a home.
Today, that effort has finally paid off. Apple Original Films has acquired the global rights to “Fancy Dance” and will release it both in theaters and on Apple TV+ later this year. A release date was not specified, and terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Erica Tremblay, who worked on FX series Reservation Dogs as a writer and director, made her feature debut on the film and also co-wrote and produced. The news of the pick-up comes over a year after the film bowed at Park City and subsequent festivals. In November, Tremblay co-wrote a guest column for THR with co-writer Miciana Alise talking about the film’s struggle to find distribution.
“With a near-perfect score on Rotten Tomatoes and all of our accolades to boot, we are left mystified by the disconnect between our apparent success and an industry-supported distribution push,” reads the column. “Our film premiered in the same year as Martin Scorsese’s Killers of the Flower Moon. Once a pillar of its business, the UK videogame chain Game will stop accepting trade-in games next month.
For years, there was one reliable way of making the ferociously expensive hobby of videogaming at least somewhat affordable: trading in your old games for new.
About a decade or so ago, the practice was so common – with the shelves at UK retailer Game stacked with second-hand games sold for a fraction of their original price – that think pieces regularly popped up questioning whether the pre-owned market was killing the industry.
There were even rumours that console manufacturers were thinking about blocking their users from running second-hand games on their systems.
It now looks as though that whole trade-in era is over – at least for the above-mentioned chain of stores, Game.
Eurogamer, citing several staff who work for Game, reports that the retailer will stop accepting trade-in discs and cartridges from the 16th of February.

The latest trailer for Netflix and DreamWorks Animation’s upcoming animated film, Orion and the Dark, has Ike Barinholtz voicing the role of Light, Dark’s nemesis, as Orion, voiced by Jacob Tremblay, learns there’s nothing to be afraid of in the night.
“Everyday I bring brightness and hope to the world, and you bring the exact opposite,” Light tells Dark, voiced by Paul Walter Hauser, as their comic light versus darkness battle plays out while an anxious Orion confronts his greatest fears in life.
“Oh, whatever!” a gloomy Dark responds as his unlikely friendship with Orion grows as Tremblay’s character must shed his adolescent anxiety over much in life to overcome his worst fear: the dark. The moral of their journey together is stop letting fear control your life and embrace the joy of living.

The first look at Netflix’s upcoming film Orion and the Dark promises a sweet adventure from Being John Malkovich scribe Charlie Kaufman.
Led by Jacob Tremblay and Paul Walter Hauser, DreamWork’s latest CG animated movie serves as Sean Charmatz’s directorial debut, and is based on Emma Yarlett’s book of the same name.
Tremblay plays Orion, shy, unassuming, harboring a secret crush — your average kid in elementary school. But underneath that normal exterior, he’s a ball of adolescent anxiety. While harboring fears of things like bees, dogs, the ocean, cell phone waves, murderous gutter clowns and falling off cliffs, there’s one thing above all else that terrifies Orion: the dark.
It’s something he must face on a nightly basis, but when the embodiment of that fear appears at his bedside one night, Orion is whisked away by Dark (Hauser) on a roller-coaster adventure around the globe.

When it was first announced that Mike Flanagan – who has previously been at the helm of the Stephen King adaptations Gerald’s Game and Doctor Sleep (and is also developing a series adaptation of The Dark Tower for Amazon Studios) – would be directing another King adaptation, The Life of Chuck, there were two actors already attached to the project: Tom Hiddleston (Loki) and Mark Hamill (Star Wars). Once filming got underway in Alabama earlier this month (the independent production was able to secure a SAG interim agreement that allows it to film while the Screen Actors Guild strike is still going on), it was revealed that Chiwetel Ejiofor (12 Years a Slave), Karen Gillan (Guardians of the Galaxy), and Jacob Tremblay (The Predator) are also in the cast. And now Flanagan has taken to social media to reveal the names of the rest of the characters – a list that includes A Nightmare on Elm Street...

As writer/director Mike Flanagan enjoys some of the best reviews of his career thanks to final Netflix series :a[The Fall Of The House Of Usher]{href='https://www.empireonline.com/tv/reviews/the-fall-of-the-house-of-usher/' }, he's already thrown himself into his next film, The Life Of Chuck. It'll find him on familiar territory, adapting a Stephen King story and thanks to an interim agreement with SAG-AFTRA, he's been able to cast it and have cameras rolling since earlier this month, with Tom Hiddleston and Mark Hamill starring. The ensemble has now grown to include Chiwetel Ejiofor, Karen Gillan and Jacob Tremblay.
Based on three interconnected stories from King’s 2020 anthology If It Bleeds, The Life Of Chuck examines the existence of its subject Charles Krantz (Hiddleston) in reverse, beginning with his death aged 39 from a brain tumor and ending with his childhood in a house believed to be haunted.

For OpenAI, the lawsuits just keep on coming. The company behind the innovative chatbot ChatGPT is the target of a copyright infringement suit organized by the Authors Guild and headlined by scribes like George R.R. Martin, Jodi Picoult, and John Grisham.
The suit was filed on September 19 in a New York federal court. The plaintiffs include 17 authors, led by literary titans like Martin, Picoult, Grisham, David Baldacci, Sylvia Day, Jonathan Franzen, and Elin Hilderbrand. The writers are arguing that OpenAI has enabled “flagrant and harmful infringements of plaintiffs’ registered copyrights” by building ChatGPT upon “systematic theft on a mass scale.”
As evidence of that theft, the Authors Guild pointed to ChatGPT-written works like “A Dawn of Direwolves.” The unauthorized Game of Thrones prequel uses the same characters Martin created for his unfinished book series A Song of Ice and Fire.

Authors are escalating efforts to block artificial intelligence companies from using their copyrighted works to train artificial intelligence systems, this time taking aim at Meta and OpenAI in proposed class-action lawsuits.
Michael Chabon and other decorated writers of books and screenplays sued Meta on Tuesday in California federal court, accusing the company of copyright infringement for harvesting mass quantities of books across the web, which were then used to produce infringing works that allegedly violate their copyrights. OpenAI was sued on Sept. 8 in an identical class action alleging the firms “benefit commercially and profit handsomely from their unauthorized and illegal” collection of the authors’ books. They seek a court order that would require the companies to destroy AI systems that were trained on copyright-protected works.
The lawsuit is the latest volley from creators in a barrage of court challenges over the legality of the way large language models are trained.

Comedian Sarah Silverman isn’t in a laughing mood these days as she and two others have sued Meta and OpenAI for using their original content without their permission.
Silverman, Richard Kadrey and Christopher Golden filed a lawsuit in California against Facebook’s parent company and ChatGPT for allegedly using their content to train their artificial intelligence programs.
The lawsuits allege that most of the material used in their training comes from copyrighted works used “without consent, without credit and without compensation.”
The catalyst for their lawsuit is reportedly leaked information about how the two companies operated their artificial intelligence department. The three authors then found that their books were included in the materials used to hone AI capabilities in conversing with a more human tone.
The books in question were specified in the lawsuits as Silverman’s The Bedwetter, Kadrey’s Sandman Slim and Golden’s Ararat.

Sarah Silverman is part of a new copyright class action suit against OpenAI, which alleges that ChatGPT was illegally trained on copyrighted books.
Silverman is one of three lead plaintiffs, alongside the authors Christopher Golden and Richard Kadrey. They claim, on behalf of the prospective class, that their books were part of a trove of copyrighted material “copied by OpenAI” and used to train ChatGPT “without consent, without credit, and without compensation.”
The new lawsuit is similar to one brought by authors Paul Tremblay and Mona Awad against OpenAI earlier this year.
