As the world fights a pandemic, we’ve been reaching out to some of our favorite artists to get their takes on these unprecedented times. Here’s what Faith No More and Mr. Bungle singer Mike Patton — who just released Necroscape, an enveloping and unsettling avant-rock odyssey by tētēma, his collaborative venture with Australian composer Anthony Pateras — had to say in response to a few quarantine questions via email.

In 2008, the satirical website The Onion published a story entitled “Michel Gondry Entertained For Days By New Cardboard Box,” poking a bit of fun at the French filmmaker’s ability to find whimsy and imagination in the most unexpected of places. That Gondry’s movies revel in the fantastic and often eschew anything resembling the cynical is hardly news, but that he’s continued to invest himself in the creation of those kind of films (save for that brief foray into superhero fare with “The Green Hornet”) is certainly worth pointing out on a regular basis.

After 321 episodes of Sound On Sight, Simon Howell gets ready to make his move to Toronto, marking this the very last time the Sos hosts record a podcast live within the same room and same city. On this very special occasion we continue our France May 68 marathon by taking a look at Philippe Garrel’s Regular Lovers, his response film to Bertolucci’s The Dreamers (a movie we discussed last week). But first up is Miss Bala, Mexico’s 2012 submission for Best Foreign Language Film, recently released on DVD.

Over the weekend, musical types like Beck, Mike Patton, Zola Jesus, and Sean Lennon performed at a giant tribute to the late, great Serge Gainsbourg at the Hollywood Bowl. The concert featured a live band and an orchestra conducted by Gainsbourg comrade Jean-Claude Vannier, and together, they performed the album "Melody Nelson" in its entirety.
Coming up last but never least on the full bill of performers was Monsieur Joseph Gordon-Levitt, who crooned/spoke a finger-snappin' cover of "Cargo Culte," the last track on "Melody Nelson."
Fans of Jgl and Gainsbourg alike were impressed by his vocal stylings, as well as his dapper duds, but really, what else would we expect from the savvy guy behind the multimedia project hitRECord? (Did we mention he's also playing possibly the cutest cancer patient ever?)
Check out the of Gordon-Levitt's performance below, and compare it to Gainsbourg's version here. (For poorer vid...

Welcome to the first Notebook Soundtrack Mix—Hyper Sleep! A word about the mix: There's no thematic thread through this collection, it's a variety of intriguing music. In making soundtrack mixes, I'm drawn to the subjective qualities of association and meaning that arise from experiencing the musical narratives that result from transitions and combinations of tracks in succession. Though there are several favorite films, Seijun Suzuki's Branded to Kill, for one, individual pieces are chosen simply for the music. I haven't seen some of the films. Robert Drasnin, Vladimir Cosma and Antoine Duhamel are represented with curious French T.V. work, rather than with some of their more well known output (The Kremlin Letter, Diva and Pierrot le fou, respectively.) Maybe this is the first of a series…I have several ideas for themed mixes, but wanted to start this way, including work that reflects jazz, classical, experimental and pop influences.
