J.K Simmons and Julie Delpy star in Kurt Voelker’s touching, but at times slightly misjudged indie drama about a grieving school teacher attempting to survive the tragic loss of his wife and mother of his teenage son. Written and directed by Voelker, The Bachelors offers a commendable study in grief and heartache, but sadly never quite manages to ring true enough for it to be anything else but a cliché-laden coming-of-age story.
To overcome the sadness brought on by the loss of his wife, Maths teacher Bill (J.K. Simmons) has decided to start a new life with his teenage son Wes (Josh Wiggins) away from a home which still reminds both of them of their huge loss. When he is offered a new position at a private school by an old college friend, Bill decides to pack up and leave his old life behind in the hope that...

"The only way you're going to feel better is if we figure out some way for you to let her go..." Freestyle Media has unveiled the first trailer for The Bachelors, an indie dramedy directed by Kurt Voelker that first premiered at the Los Angeles Film Festival. The film is about a man, played by J.K. Simmons, who takes his teenage son and moves into the big city after his wife dies. As they each begin to adjust to their new life and seek ways to heal their wounds, they both find comfort in newfound romance. The impressive cast includes Julie Delpy, Josh Wiggins, Kevin Dunn, and Odeya Rush. This looks charming and heartfelt, and full of some fun scenes as well as touching moments. As usual for American indies, but I'm still curious. Here's the first official trailer (+ poster) for Kurt Voelker's The Bachelors, direct from YouTube: After...

Overcoming a death in the family is never an easy transition for survivors, but for the two men at the center of Kurt Voelker's family drama The Bachelors, adjusting to their loss becomes literally a matter of survival. Treating the issues of grief and recovery with touching restraint, the pic ably demonstrates the healing effects of love and compassion, making it a fine fit for a discerning distributor.

Not exactly slowing his roll, Hong Sang-soo is already shooting the follow-up to last year’s Right Now, Wrong Then — one of the finest films we saw in 2015, and one likely to end up on a few best-of-2016 lists if it actually gets released — all the while reuniting with leads Jung Jae-young and Kim Min-hee. Information on his 18th feature remains essentially non-existent to outsiders, but such is my enthusiasm for his work, arguably the best streak in modern cinema, that even a brief notice seems worthwhile.
