What is the best Australian movie ever made? Walkabout? Wake in Fright? The Piano? Picnic at Hanging Rock? The Babadook? All worthy contenders, no doubt, but they’re all wrong answers. The only acceptable response regarding the best movie from the Land Down Under is Mad Max, George Miller’s marauding motorist mania that celebrated its 45th anniversary in 2024. Never mind the billion-dollar franchise it spawned, the creative ingenuity and low-budget DIY filmmaking of the original remains one of the most impressive cinematic feats on record.
A true independent movie with a rebellious spirit, Mad Max was made in just 12 weeks for a paltry $350,000 yet went on to gross $185 million worldwide. The film introduced the world to Mel Gibson, who would go on to play the badass road-racing Main Force Patrol officer Max Rockatansky twice more en route to becoming a bona fide Hollywood action star. The Mad Max movie franchise, first created by George Miller and Byron Kennedy in 1979 with the initial movie of the same name, became a media sensation. The film series is set in post-apocalyptic Australia and follows the titular character Max Rockatansky (portrayed by Mel Gibson in 3 films) into action-packed adventures.
Later on, Tom Hardy took over as Max for 2015’s fourth installment – “Mad Max: Fury Road.”
The series chronicles the thrilling escapades of Rockatansky, a police officer in a dystopian Australia facing social disintegration due to war and depleting resources. Grief-stricken and enraged by the biker gang’s murder of his wife and child, Max embarks on a quest for vengeance.
As Australia rapidly plunges into barbarity with each passing day, he finds himself assisting small pockets of civilization – initially driven by self-interest but eventually out of compassion. Alone in the Wasteland, Max is determined to make that responsible pay for their heinous deed.

The true breakdown of society appears to have begun in Australia around 1979, when George Miller made this berserk extrapolation of every toxic futurist prediction on the books. Out on the open road the only thing saving society from horrifying motorized gang violence is a corps of equally crazed patrolmen in their interceptor vehicles. With this picture Mel Gibson went from zero to ninety on the star-meters, even though U.S. distribution fell to the failing American International Pictures. Kino gathers up the best existing extras, and includes audio mixes in two separate languages — incomprehensible Australian and marginally understandable Australian. With the non-stop action on screen, who cares?

"Whatever you do... don't go into the workshop." Freedom Cinema has released an official trailer for an indie horror film from Australia called The Faceless Man, which is set to open in the US on VOD later this month. This premiered at the Melbourne Underground Film Festival last year, where it won a bunch of awards. Sophie Thurling stars as a cancer survivor who goes out to a country house with her friends. At first they're terrorized by red neck locals, but at the same time a para-normal monster "seen as the faceless man" haunts the house pushing the friends to their limits. The cast includes Andy McPhee, Roger Ward, Lucas Pittaway, Albert Goikhman, Brendan Bacon, and Daniel Reader. This looks like a wild Oz-sploitation mashup of all kinds of crazy horror concepts. And there's a killer poster for it - also seen below. Here's the official US trailer (+ poster...

The Haapsalu Horror and Fantasy Film Festival (HÕFF) in Estonia may be one of the world’s more obscure festivals but entering The Faceless Man there has paid dividends for the writer-director James Di Martino.
The filmmaker and his fellow producer Daniel Facciolo had planned to attend the festival, which is due to take place from April 25-28 and may still happen online, but for obvious reasons can’t go.
However Di Martino was contacted by Josh Guttman of New York-based international sales agent Hewes Pictures and a deal was signed.
“Previously we had a sales agent lined up with the idea of launching the film at Cannes, but we had not signed,” Di Martino tells If.
“As Covid-19 will prevent any big markets for a long time, Hewes Pictures contacted me with the idea of releasing on alternative platforms and made a good offer.

Writer-director James Di Martino did not like any of the distribution deals he was offered for his debut feature The Faceless Man, so he is releasing the film in Australia and New Zealand with the help of a marketing team he has assembled.
The privately-funded horror movie inspired by personal experience will open in cinemas on October 31 – Halloween – after the world premiere on October 12 at Cinema Nova as part of Monster Fest.
Sophie Thurling plays the protagonist Emily, a cancer survivor who embarks on a drug-fueled holiday with several friends. Her fears of a recurrence of the illness are triggered when she encounters a faceless monster plus enraged locals who have a strict no-drugs policy and a group of Russian mobsters who are searching for a missing suitcase.

"There's nothing out there except dust and ruins..." Watch out for angry wild boars! Australia has given us many various wild and crazy creature features, and we have yet another one on the release line-up for 2018. The cast of Boar includes John Jarratt, Simone Buchanan, Bill Moseley, Melissa Tkautz, Nathan Jones, Roger Ward, Hugh Sheridan, Ernie Dingo, Chris Haywood, Ricci Guarnaccio, Emily Williams, and Steve Bisley. This looks like it gets very violent and very bloody, which is exactly what we should expect from Australian creature horror. A couple of weeks ago we brought you news that Aussie actor Roger Ward had joined the cast of the film and now we can exclusively share the next piece of casting for the eagerly awaited new movie from Black Forest Films & Lady of the Light Productions – who have partnered up to make the ambitious feature currently in pre-production.
As if mining the talents of one genre star wasn’t enough, the production team have announced that Ricco Ross – who played Frost in Aliens, as well as appearing in Death Wish 3 and Wishmaster (though I’ll always remember him as Kassim in the Highlander TV show, as well as his appearances in a bunch of 90s Dtv action movies like Project: Shadowchaser and Timelock) – has joined the cast of The Shinjuku Five; and is set to play Ronny, a sleazy Shinjuku night club owner.

Witness! Warner Bros. has finally – finally – locked down plans to unveil the monochromatic cut of George Miller’s scintillating action opus, Mad Max: Fury Road. And it’s releasing sooner than you may think.

The long awaited black and chrome version of George Miller's Mad Max: Fury Road finally has a release date. Warner Bros. Home Entertainment has announced that they will be releasing the Mad Max: Fury Road Black & Chrome Edition on December 6th in a two-film collection that also includes the theatrical version of the film. It will also include a special introduction by Miller describing his vision for the film. I'm excited about watching this version of the film because Miller says it's the best version of it. When previously talking about his black and white vision of the film, he said:
"One thing I’ve noticed is that the default position for everyone is to de-saturate post-apocalyptic movies. There’s only two ways to go, make them black and white — the best version of this movie is black and white, but people reserve that for art movies now. The...

Dystopia! What a place to be. Well, except when people are mulched to feed an over populated society (Soylent Green) or killed at the age of 30 to control it (Logan’s Run); and in the case of Turkey Shoot (1982), hunted for sport by society’s elite. Come to think of it, Dystopia is kind of a bummer.
Released in its native Australia in October, Turkey Shoot wouldn’t see the light of day in the U.S. until September of ’83 under the title Escape 2000. Both titles work; the former playing into the more lurid elements, while the latter highlights the cut rate sci-fi angle. And it’s the swirling combination of the two that gives this sucker its punch. Turkey Shoot is A class exploitation with a down under smile.

Set in the near future, Mad Max portrays a dystopia on the brink of total collapse. Biker gangs do as they please and the "Halls of Justice" are quite literally crumbling. Yet, small pockets of a peaceful society still exist. People still go to restaurants and nightclubs and an attempt at order, of a sort, is maintained by the Main Force Patrol (Mfp), though the line between good and bad is slowly beginning to blur. Working with a tiny budget, director and co-writer George Miller uses the open road as his visual effect, bringing the action as close to the asphalt as we can get. Tires screech and eyes bug out of their head as a story of a society on the verge of being overrun by savages evolves into a story of revenge as the film's title character slowly earns his nickname. With a mixture of chaos, soon-to-be memorable moments of iconography and comedy,...

Somewhere in Australia are the first signs of the beginning of the end, the end of civilization as most people in the Western understand it, that is. "It's that rat circus out there, I'm beginning to enjoy it. Look, any longer out on that road and I'm one of them, a terminal psychotic, except that I've got this bronze badge that says that I'm one of the good guys."
And so we were introduced to the ticking time bomb of fury that is Mel Gibson, at least on screen, in "Mad Max."
Released 35 years ago this week (on April 12, 1979), George Miller's film about a near-future cop who turns vigilante when a biker gang kills his partner and his family, made an international star out of Gibson, made Miller an A-list director, and helped put the new wave of Australian cinema on the world map. It also launched a franchise that continues to this day; next year, Miller will finally release the long-gestating "Mad Max: Fury Road," with Tom Hardy taking over as Max.

Some may recall that when Frank Brittain's The Set was released in Australia in the seventies, it outraged many with its uncompromising look at teenage sexuality and identity at a time when homosexuality was not only taboo, but also illegal. While the film went on to become a cult classic, the book, upon which the film was based, remained unpublished. That is, until now. The Set's author, Roger Ward, decided it was time to finally publish the novel. An established actor, particularly of the "Ozploitation" genre, Ward has enjoyed roles in a slew of legendary Australian films including Mad Max, Turkey Shoot, The Man from Hong Kong and Young Einstein, and a clutch of television series such as Division 4, Matlock Police and Homicide.

George Clooney has reportedly been offered the lead role in a remake of the film which inspired Brokeback Mountain. The Set was released in Australia back in 1970, and caused a great deal of controversy due to its depiction of homosexuality, still illegal in the country at the time. The film's writer and star Roger Ward is helming a $$50 million remake of the original, and claimed that he has offered Syriana star Clooney the lead role. "I've approached George Clooney for one of the main roles," Ward (more)...

The 11th annual Melbourne Underground Film Festival wrapped on Aug. 29 with a secret, illegal screening of Bruce Labruce‘s gay porn zombie epic L.A. Zombie, which would win Labruce the Best Foreign Director Award.
The big winner this year, though was the debut feature film — and the official closing night film of Muff — by Joseph Sims, Bad Behavior. Although Stuart Simpson‘s El Monstro Del Mar! won the Best Film award, Bad Behavior took home six awards total, including Best Director, Best Male Actor, Best Screenplay and more. The film is a splatter movie about a group of teenagers running afoul of psychopaths. Australia’s The Age newspaper also recently profiled Sims.
Other Australian films taking home awards were Dominic Deacon‘s Burlesque winning Best Guerrilla Film, Road Train by Dean Francis taking the Special Jury Prize and Lanfranchi’s Memorial Discotheque by Richard Baron winning Best Documentary.
