There’s nothing quite like cinema under the stars. The Los Angeles based screening org Cinespia understands that and for the last 22 years, founder John Wyatt and his team have been bringing people together for outdoor showings of classic films every summer at the Hollywood Forever Cemetery. Sponsored by Amazon & Wondery, this month and next features screenings of “D.E.B.S” for L.A. Pride, “Whatever Happened to Baby Jane?,” “Rocky” on July 4th with fireworks, and many more, but this past Saturday’s presentation of the 2007 Beatles musical “Across the Universe” had an extra special treat for guests. Star Evan Rachel Wood was there to introduce the film via video message and offered some fascinating tidbits on making it and the struggle getting it released, as well as the impact it had on her life and career.

According to Evan Rachel Wood, one of the scenes in the 2007 Beatles themed musical Across the Universe is more based in reality than one might assume. While presenting a special Cinespia screening of the film at Hollywood Forever Cemetery, Wood shared a behind-the-scenes story from the set.
Notably, Wood did not present the film in person but instead recorded a video because she is “recovering from a knee injury and not going anywhere.”
“They told me to share a funny story or moment from when we were on set,” Wood said. “Well, I’ll just say this … during the ‘I Am the Walrus’ scene, any moment you see myself and Jim Sturgess, we are actually tripping.”
Wood continued, indicating that the stars had taken real drugs while shooting parts of the hallucinogenic sequence.

At the Bentonville Film Festival this weekend, the diversity-minded event’s founder and chair Geena Davis spoke about the legacy of her 1991 feminist masterstroke Thelma & Louise, while insisting that remake-happy Hollywood had better keep its hands off this one because updating the story would be “pointless.”
“Well, it must never be remade,” the Oscar winner told IndieWire in an interview at the Arkansas festival. “I mean, it’s 30-something years later, and it holds up more than others. I’m not saying this because I’m in it, but it really holds up. And there’s no need to revisit it. What would be the point? In my opinion.”

In the pantheon of great Hollywood films with a major feminist bite, the Geena Davis- and Susan Sarandon-starring “Thelma & Louise” remains the contemporary standard-bearer. The Callie Khouri-penned MGM crime drama about two best friends on the run (who find themselves and their knack for taking bad men down a peg in the process) was a commercial and critical smash when it hit theaters in May 1991.
With a splashy Cannes premiere to launch it, the film made over $45 million at the box office (in 1991 dollars and on a $16.5 million budget) and went on to pick up six Oscar nominations, with a Best Original Screenplay win for first-time writer Khouri.
And, yes, it was directed by a man. That Ridley Scott was at the helm of this feminist masterpiece still surprises some — or at least those not totally familiar with the filmmaker’s wide oeuvre. Even star Davis...

Nicole Kidman is ready for more “Practical Magic.” On the red carpet for her new Netflix movie “A Family Affair,” the Oscar winner confirmed to Variety’s Marc Malkin that she is planning to star in the sequel to the 1998 favorite opposite her returning co-star Sandra Bullock. When asked what the storyline for the sequel will be, Kidman said, “You have to ask Sandy.”
“We’ve been circling it for a while, but you know it’s still in [the early stages],” Kidman added.
As previously reported, Warner Bros. announced that a “Practical Magic” follow-up is in the works earlier this month. Kidman and Bullock are set to also produce the project as well. The original followed siblings engaged in a supernatural cover-up after Bullock accidentally drugs and kills Kidman’s abusive boyfriend (Goran Višnjić).
Kidman teased the upcoming sequel a bit more in an interview with People magazine, saying: “Yes, I will be in it.

One would be forgiven for not including a "Practical Magic 2" announcement on their 2024 Hollywood bingo card because, frankly, it's a little unexpected. Be that as it may, that's precisely what's happening as Warner Bros. has confirmed that a follow-up to the 1998 Halloween season favorite is indeed in the works. What's more, Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman are both in talks to reprise their roles in the sequel.
The news was announced by Warner Bros. on TikTok (you can check out the video below). According to Variety, Akiva Goldsman ("I Am Legend") is set to write the screenplay, with Bullock and Kidman expected to produce in addition to starring. Denise Di Novi is also on board as a producer. No word yet on who will wind up in the director's chair, but Griffin Dunne helmed the original, which was based on Alice Hoffman's 1995 novel. Director D. W. Waterson proves that cheerleading is a sport with an impressive opening sequence in her new film. “Backspot” follows a young mid-level backspot, Riley (Devery Jacobs), who is determined to be the best, no matter what. Anxiety and Dedication Riley gets the chance to cheer with the all-star squad, Thunderhawks. With a competition looming, she must navigate her crippling anxiety, her relationship with her girlfriend Amanda (Kudakwashe Rutendo), and her desperate need for approval from her new coach Eileen (Evan Rachel Wood). The bulk of Riley’s life is devoted to cheerleading—practicing it, training for it, thinking about it—which...

D.W. Waterson’s cheer drama Backspot, also produced by Elliot Page under Page Boy Productions, aims to tell a more well-rounded and ambitious story about the seemingly glamorous but occupationally hazardous world of competitive cheerleading. The film follows Riley (Devery Jacobs), an ambitious cheerleader hell-bent on perfection, as she, alongside her girlfriend (Kudakwashe Rutendo) and their best friend (Noa Dibertro), land highly competitive spots on a prestigious all-star cheerleading squad led by an overbearing head coach (Evan Rachel Wood) and her presiding assistant coach Thomas Antony Olajide). The film acts as a multi-hyphenate social commentary on queerness, mental health and coming-of-age tale for young women in sports.
Here, Deadline talks to Waterson about executing the perfect shot, casting their star leads and cinematic inspirations.
Deadline: What were some of the films that inspired Backspot?
D. W. Waterson: Bend It Like Beckham had a huge influence on me growing up.

Few big new studio wide releases, yes, but Viggo Mortensen’s latest is on 700 screens, plus limited openings for Chris Wilcha’s Flipside, Judd Apatow EP, and Spanish animated, Oscar-nominated Robot Dreams from Neon. Bleecker Street’s family drama Ezra and IFC Films’ arthouse slasher In A Violent Nature are technically wide but both well under 1,500 screens.
Viggo Mortensen directed, wrote and stars in Western The Dead Don’t Hurt presented by Shout! Studios on 730 screens. The story of star-crossed lovers on the western U.S. frontier in the 1860s sees Vivienne Le Coudy (Vicky Krieps), a fiercely independent woman, settle in Nevada with Danish immigrant Holger Olsen (Mortensen). But the outbreak of the Civil War separates them as Olsen goes to fight with the Union army, leaving Vivienne alone in a town full of corrupt officials. Premiered in Toronto, see Deadline review. It’s Mortensen’s second outing behind the camera since 2020’s Falling.

The number of movies about gifted youngsters sacrificing the traditional teen experience in favor of artistic perfection or academic excellence is immeasurable. "Stick It" peered into the world of Olympic hopeful gymnastics, "Whiplash" pulled back the curtain of elite musicianship, and "Bring It On" turned the world of competitive cheerleading into one of the greatest teen films ever made. This is all to say, coming-of-age stories in this territory are well-tread, so finding a way to stand out among so many all-time greats is a massive undertaking. Fortunately, for D.W. Waterson's directorial feature film debut, "Backspot," this stylish, unapologetically queer look at the world of All-Star Cheerleading (not to be confused with high school cheerleading) is a soaring breath of fresh air.

The 21st century cheerleader is an athlete unlike any other. With a wide-eyed grin, flashy makeup and a glittering bow to match, she is required to be sturdy yet feminine; pliant yet steely. In “Backspot,” D.W. Waterson’s feature directorial debut, the Canadian filmmaker has crafted a thrilling character portrait that puts those seemingly incongruent demands to the test. And, in the process, they have created a bold showcase for Devery Jacobs (“Reservation Dogs”), an actress who deftly captures the vexing tightrope walk required of young women in such a demanding, performance-driven, sport.
What’s immediately noticeable when you first meet Riley (Jacobs) are her eyebrows. Waterson doesn’t have us fixate on them but as you witness Riley going about her cheerleading practice with, among others, her girlfriend Amanda (Kudakwashe Rutendo), you can’t help but wonder why they’re so thinned out. Marilyn Manson has signed a record deal with the metal label Nuclear Blast, and apparently is set to release his first new music since a number of sexual abuse allegations essentially put a halt to his career. The embattled shock rocker teased a one-minute snippet of new song on his social channels.
The snippet was also shared by Nuclear Blast, with a rep confirming to Rolling Stone that the label has indeed inked a deal with Manson. No song title has been revealed but the audio clip features Manson whispering the line, “Keep sleeping/ I’ll make you dream of me.”
In February 2021, Manson’s ex-fiancée Evan Rachel Wood went public with accusations against the rock star, declaring, “He started grooming me when I was a teenager and horrifically abused me for years.”

Rejection and Acceptance: How Camilla Belle Came to Star in the Film
After Evan Rachel Wood turned down the part, Camilla Belle accepted it despite her dislike for horror films.

Al Pacino and Dan Stevens have teamed up for exorcism horror film “The Ritual” from director David Midell.
XYZ Films has acquired worldwide rights to the feature, with plans to release it theatrically in 2025 and arrange international distribution at the upcoming Cannes market.
“The Ritual” was written by Midell and Enrico Natale and produced by Andrew Stevens, Mitchell Welch and Natale. Ashley Greene and Abigail Cowen round out the cast.
Based on a true story, “The Ritual” follows two priests — one questioning his faith (Stevens) and one reckoning with a troubled past (Pacino) — who must put aside their differences to save a possessed young woman through a difficult and dangerous series of exorcisms. The film is an authentic portrayal of Emma Schmidt, an American woman whose demonic possession culminated in harrowing exorcisms. Her case remains the most thoroughly documented exorcism in American history.

"This world is not kind to weak people." XYZ Films has revealed the trailer for a Canadian cheerleading film called Backspot, which plays more a serious drama or intense thriller than a sports comedy or satire. This is similar to that rowing film The Novice a few years ago. This premiered at the 2023 Toronto Film Festival last year and hits US theaters in May. Devery Jacobs (from "Reservation Dogs") stars as Riley, who is given the chance to cheer with the all-star squad, Thunderhawks. With a competition looming, Riley must navigate her crippling anxiety, her relationship with her girlfriend, and also her desperate need for approval from her new coach. One positive review states: “You may think you know your sports movie tropes, but you’ve never seen them used quite this way — that is, within a queer cheerleading drama firmly focused on complex female characters — and Waterson’s Backspot delights in skewing such expectations.

“Shazam” star Zachary Levi is set to headline rock-climbing action thriller “Free Fall” for XYZ Films, with acclaimed New Zealand stuntwoman and stunt coordinator Zoë Bell tapped to direct.
The film — written by Sean Finegan and Gregg Maxwell Parker — tells the story of a father’s attempt to reconcile with his estranged daughter on a rock-climbing trip that turns deadly as an accident leaves them stranded hundreds of feet in the air. Production is set to start later this year in New Zealand. Tom Hern and Nua Finau of Tavake are producing, with Navid McIlhargey and Erik Olsen executive producing alongside Finegan, Parker and Levi.
Bell began her career as a stunt performer on “Xena: Warrior Princess” and then alongside Quentin Tarantino as a stunt woman and coordinator over a decades-long relationship. HBO’s cancellation of “Westworld” and the subsequent removal of the show from Max is often cited as an example of how hostile the streaming landscape can be for artists. But the show’s co-creators Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy aren’t ready to give up on the possibility of finishing it.
In a new interview with The Wrap to promote his new Prime Video series “Fallout,” Nolan explained that he’s still holding out hope that they’ll have a chance to complete their planned story at some point. The showrunner said that he and Joy won’t reveal any details about how the show would have ended because they don’t want to spoil any hypothetical future seasons.

Jonathan Nolan hasn’t given up the idea of bringing Westworld back online.
Though HBO cancelled the sci-fi drama in 2022, and subsequently removed it from streaming on Max, Nolan recently told The Wrap that he and fellow co-creator Lisa Joy “did have an architecture for the series and I’m big on getting a chance to finish these things. I think our hope is still somewhere down the line [for] a chance to revisit that story, and I would hate to have spoiled it now if we get a chance to do so.”

For four seasons stretched across six years, Lisa Joy and Jonathan Nolan infuriated and dazzled lovers of mind-bending sci-fi in equal measure with "Westworld." Some would have you believe the pair's extremely loose small-screen re-imagining of Michael Crichton's 1973 "Westworld" film and its sequels peaked with its first season ... and they'd be right, so far as when it came to telling a twisty, layered story about the nature of consciousness and what it even means to have agency as clearly and cohesively as possible. But as guilty as later seasons were of being needlessly convoluted in order to stay one step ahead of viewers, it's also hard not to (perhaps begrudgingly) admire a show that not only respected its audience but actively goaded them into trying to solve the increasingly baffling puzzle boxes it threw at them ahead of time.

Series co-creator Jonathan Nolan says he “100 percent” wants to finish the story of Westworld, which was cancelled after its fourth season in 2022.
Screenwriter and filmmaker Jonathan Nolan may be moving to other sci-fi pastures with this month’s Fallout, but he still has hopes of finishing what he started with his earlier TV series, Westworld.
Cancelled in 2022, the previously acclaimed series – adapted from the classic Michael Crichton film of the same name – ended on its fourth season, leaving its story unresolved.
In a new interview with The Hollywood Reporter, though, Nolan says he “100 percent” wants to give the Westworld saga the ending it deserves.
“Yes, 100 percent,” Nolan said. “We’re completionists. It took me eight years and a change of director to get Interstellar made. We’d like to finish the story we started.”

If anyone in Hollywood knows The Beatles‘ songs, it’s Evan Rachel Wood. She was in one of the biggest Beatles movies. She named her favorite Beatles song and named some others that might have influenced Radiohead.

Wood’s first major movie role was as Lucy (get it?) in the Fab Four jukebox musical Across the Universe. One of the most famous musical numbers in the movie is a hallucinogenic staging of “Happiness Is a Warm Gun.” During a 2007 interview with The News-Times, Wood was asked to pick her favorite Beatles songs.
“It’s hard, because it depends on where you are in your life and what day it is, because they really covered everything,” she replied. “So right now, hmm, recently, I would sing ‘Happiness Is a Warm Gun.’ I got into that because of Across the Universe.

The Beatles‘ movies contain some of the most unexpected sequences in the history of movie musicals. For example, one of them includes a musical number shot underwater. An actor from the movie explained how that moment came together behind the scenes. The moment in question could have become a lot more risque.

Director Julie Taymor’s Across the Universe is a jukebox musical based on the tunes of the Fab Four. It features all of the band’s most famous songs, like “I Want to Hold Your Hand,” “Something,” and “Let It Be,” along with more obscure tracks like “I Am the Walrus,” “Girl,” and “Because.” The “Because” is one of the most famous scenes in the movie, as it features actors performing the song underwater.

Cinema history is full of missed opportunities. For example, a Beatles movie almost featured David Bowie as a character from a Beatles song. Instead, a famous comedian got the role. A member of the film’s cast revealed what she thought about this development.
David Bowie almost played Mr. Kite in a Beatles movie

During a 2018 interview with Vulture, director Julie Taymor discussed the role of Mr. Kite. “We rehearsed it like a normal musical in theater … and it bonded everybody,” he said. “I’ll never forget [star] Evan [Rachel Wood] walking in the hallways with this Bowie T-shirt, because at one point we’d asked David Bowie if he was going to play Mr.

We don't always talk enough about visual effects when we talk about the components that make up a great film or television series. Quality writing, acting, cinematography, and production design are essential and mutually complementary, of course. But the realm of VFX is equally crucial in the way that it simultaneously informs and is informed by those other disciplines, often constituting the key ingredient that allows a scene or a shot to accomplish its goal -- whether that goal is steeped in authenticity, scariness, wonder, tension, or surrealism.
In that sense, comparing the before and after of shots featuring computer generated imagery (CGI) and effects can be highly instructional. Thanks to the showcase reels released by many VFX studios and behind-the-scenes featurettes, it's possible to get a side-by-side glimpse at what several great TV shows look like prior to the addition of digital effects. The comparisons are sometimes amusing, sometimes revelatory,...

This time last year, Jonathan Majors was a star on the rise.
A graduate of Yale's drama school, Majors had a handful of major credits to his name, including HBO's Lovecraft Country, the blockbuster Rocky spinoff Creed III, and the critically acclaimed indie film The Last Black Man In San Francisco.
It was an impressive resume for a star in his early thirties -- and the best was yet to come (at least from a monetary standpoint).
Majors made headlines when signed on to play Kang the Conqueror in a slate of Marvel Cinematic Universe projects.
It was a deal that had the potential to take him from "well off" to "private island wealthy."
But in March of 2023, Majors' life was instantly turned upside down.
Fans were horrified by the downfall of an artist whom many regarded as one of the great actors of our generation.

“Tatami,” the Iranian drama from co-directors Guy Nattiv and Zar Amir, has been picked up by XYZ Films for North America, where both lip-synched English and original language versions will be released later this year.
The feature, which bowed in Venice 2023 where it won the Brian Award, made history by becoming the first film to be jointly directed by an Iranian and an Israeli filmmaker.
Starring Arienne Mandi, Amir, Jaime Ray Newman and Ash Goldeh, and written by Nattiv — an Oscar winner for his short film “Skin” — and Elham Erfani, “Tatami” is set during the Judo World Championships in Tbilisi, Georgia. Midway through the competition, Iranian female judo fighter Leila (Mandi) and her coach Maryam (Amir ) receive an ultimatum from the Islamic Republic ordering Leila to fake an injury and lose, lest she be branded a traitor of the state. Marilyn Manson’s penalty for pursuing failed defamation and emotional distress allegations against Westworld actress Evan Rachel Wood and artist Illma Gore has ballooned to nearly half a million dollars.
The hefty legal tab first hit six figures back on Jan. 29, when a Los Angeles judge ordered Manson, whose legal name is Brian Warner, to pay $326,956 for the fees Wood racked up defending against the claims struck last May from Warner’s still-pending lawsuit against the two women. The abrupt cancellation of “Westworld” in late 2022 marked an unceremonious ending for what was once one of HBO’s buzziest series. Lisa Joy and Jonathan Nolan’s adaptation of Michael Crichton’s sci-fi novel followed the employees and customers of a futuristic theme park that allowed visitors to immerse themselves in the Wild West, taking out their most violent urges on realistic androids built to resemble humans. But while its debut season was a cultural phenomenon, declining viewership and critical reception prompted HBO to part ways with the show after Season 4.
In a new interview with The Hollywood Reporter, “Westwood” star Evan Rachel Wood reflected on the show’s cancellation. She revealed that the most painful part of the process was being left in the dark about how the story would have ultimately ended.

Dave‘s worldwide tour has come to an end: The hip-hop comedy starring Dave Burd will not return for a Season 4 at Fxx, TVLine has learned.
“After some back and forth, there are no current plans for a fourth season of Dave right now,” FX said in a statement, “as Dave Burd has decided to take an extended break to focus on music and other ventures.” But “that does not rule out the possibility of doing something in the future,” the statement added, and Burd will develop “future projects for us through his overall production deal with Fxp.”

The hit HBO show, Westworld, which was based on the Michael Crichton 1973 film of the same name, was a shocking and unfortunate cancellation made by Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav. While Zaslav has notoriously jettisoned projects in the past, Westworld was a television series that was not only up and running in its fourth season but was also a big hit for the premium cable network. The series that Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy had created was building to a fifth and final season. In the wake of the cancellation back in 2022, Nolan stated that they had been fighting to conclude the series when he told THR, “We always planned for a fifth and final season. We are still in conversations with the network. We very much hope to make them.”

A judge has ordered that Marilyn Manson must pay Evan Rachel Wood‘s legal fees for her defense against his defamation lawsuit against her — the bulk of which was previously tossed out.
Manson will foot the $326,956 bill for Wood’s defense against the defamation and emotional distress claims that were struck from his lawsuit last year. The order came down from Los Angeles County Superior Court Judge Teresa A. Beaudet at a hearing on Monday (January 29th), as reported by Rolling Stone.
The same judge dismissed much of the case last May. Manson’s defamation suit followed the actress’ claims of abuse during the one-time couple’s relationship from 2007 to 2010 — claims that were protected by the First Amendment and California’s anti-slapp law and its protections on individual free speech, according to the judge.
Judge Beaudet did trim off $60k from Wood’s reimbursement claims, stating that some descriptions for billed hours were too “vague.

Evan Rachel Wood knows about as much as fans when it comes to what Westworld creators Lisa Joy and Jonathan Nolan had up their sleeves for the final season of their hit HBO series — which is to say, she knows nothing at all.
Wood, who spoke to The Hollywood Reporter ahead of her New York stage debut as Audrey in the off-Broadway production of Little Shop of Horrors, revealed during the sit-down that she had asked the Westworld creators about where the show was headed following the season four finale, “Que Sera Sera.” In it, humanity — and most sentient life — essentially ends after a season that saw the park androids seizing control, flipping the power scales to control humans the way hosts once were.

It’s early afternoon on a Friday when Darren Criss and Evan Rachel Wood pick up the phone, just five days before they are set to debut as the new Seymour and Audrey in off-Broadway’s Little Shop of Horrors.
Both are on their way to the Westside Theatre stage for their first top-to-bottom run-through, taking over the complicated but beloved characters based on Roger Corman’s 1960 horror comedy and deftly adapted for the stage by theater legends Howard Ashman (book and lyrics) and Alan Menken (music).
Now in the fifth year of the U.S. revival of the dark goings-on of a Skid Row flower shop, several notable names have left their mark on the show: Jonathan Groff, Jeremy Jordan, Conrad Ricamora, Corbin Bleu, Constance Wu, Maude Apatow, Tammy Blanchard and Lena Hall. But none quite like this, as an intentional leap together among friends.

Kristen Stewart’s domination of the 2024 Sundance Film Festival continued at the Variety Sundance Cover Party presented by United Airlines, where Stewart was honored for her starring roles in two big festival premieres: “Love Me,” a post-apocalyptic romance film in which she stars opposite Steven Yeun, and “Loves Lies Bleeding,” an A24-backed crime thriller in which she played a reclusive gym manager who falls for a local bodybuilder.
“It’s hard to get here,” Stewart told Variety at the party about returning to Sundance, where she has premiered more than a dozen movies throughout her career. “Not because it’s an established and elite film festival, but because it supports marginalized voices. Voices that aren’t heard anywhere else. It’s a solidifying, communal feeling and it only makes you stronger to go back into a world of a ‘no’ and say, ‘I know that there’s a place for me.
