The premise of the 1997 sci-fi series "Stargate Sg-1," which spun out from the 1994 movie, is fun. The American military has in their possession a series of ring-shaped Stargates that can instantaneously transport them to distant planets. The Stargates had previously been used by ancient aliens to infiltrate Earth and pose as deities; the gods of Egypt were in fact conquering extraterrestrials called the Goa'uld. The military uses the Stargates to travel to distant worlds and gather powerful weapons technologies, hoping to use them to defend themselves from the Goa'uld. Alien weapons are a major factor throughout the massive "Stargate" franchise.
Of course, the ensuing mythology of "Sg-1" becomes massively complicated, and only deep-cut fans will be able to give a casual reader all the necessary details to understanding the original series and its multiple spin-offs; after completing all 10 seasons of the original show, one might also want to watch "Stargate Infinity,...

This post contains spoilers for the "Stargate" franchise.
Roland Emmerich's 1994 sci-fi drama "Stargate" posits an intriguing premise. An ancient ring-shaped device excavated during an archaeological expedition in Giza turns out to be a two-way portal connecting similar devices on distant plants, using a wormhole as a means to transport people. The film's elaborate plot gradually reveals that extraterrestrial beings enslaved parts of the human civilization, and used the Stargate device to trap them in their home planets across the galaxy. Brad Wright and Jonathan Glassner's beloved series "Stargate Sg-1" builds its foundation on the film's lore, expanding a dystopian world where military organizations on Earth use the Stargate to free the enslaved humans and protect the planet from a vicious alien race known as the Goa'uld.
"Sg-1" ran for 10 seasons over a span of 10 years, and birthed a sprawling franchise dedicated to enriching its mythos, so much so...

The existence of the 21st century itself is almost inconceivable. Ask any one who was around in 1999 how they felt about the incoming year 2000 and they’ll be happy to tell you how surreal it all felt. Hell, they may even be nice enough to give you a non-perishable treat from their Y2K bomb shelter.
The fact that we’re even in the 2000s and have been for many years feels like science fiction to begin with. It’s only fitting then that television, a very 20th century innovation, has been at our side the whole time to make sense of it.
Sci-fi TV in the 21st century was both a friendly companion and a bold boundary pusher. Whether it took us to the heights of outer space, alternate universes, or even just around the neighborhood, science fiction stories truly enriched our pop culture landscape. What follows are our...

The venerable Deadline reports that a new Stargate series and a new movie/s are currently being discussed at Amazon, with the movie “likely going first.”
It’s not a huge surprise to learn that Stargate (along with Robocop) is a priority for Amazon now that the $8.5 billion MGM purchase has bedded in – they were on the list mooted by industry insider Jeff Snider back in March – but this is the first time one of the major news sites has weighed in.
What is new is the suggestion that it could open with a new movie, which totally makes sense. After all, Amazon recently found its cinema legs with the $100 million release of Creed III, and a new blockbuster Stargate movie would be a fantastic way to kick off a new series in style. That’d hopefully give a new Stargate series a much better chance of survival than so...

On Saturday, the stars of Stargate Atlantis reunited for a panel at Comic-Con@Home, reminiscing about their first Comic-Con appearance as cast members, their initial perceptions of the show and more.
Kicking off the discussion of the cast’s first convention appearance was Rainbow Sun Francks. The actor, who played Lt. Aiden Ford, remembered that his first Comic-Con as part of Stargate was “crazy,” which led David Nykl and other cast members to chime in with further details.
“It was really daunting,” said Nykl, who played Dr. Radek Zelenka. “You’ve got to develop this sort of onstage convention personality, which is like a hybrid between your character and yourself. We had to learn that.”
Actress Torri Higginson (Dr. Elizabeth Weir) recalled that “the studio gave us all free liquor the night before” the panel. Naturally, then, she and her co-stars ended up with “a hangover that only new actors with free liquor would have.

The various iterations of Stargate have seen the sci-fi franchise endure for over a quarter of a century, but fans have been relatively starved of content for a long time now. The ten episodes of Origins, which only run for ten minutes each, aired online two years ago, but that’s the only expansion of the mythology we’ve had since Universe ended after two seasons back in 2011.
At one stage, Dean Devlin and Roland Emmerich were developing a long-awaited sequel to the original movie, which marked Emmerich’s first major foray into effects-driven blockbusters, and it did decent business after raking in $196 million on a $55 million budget, garnering solid enough reviews from critics in the process.
Under most circumstances that would be more than enough to justify a multi-film series, but for some reason, MGM never showed much interest in continuing the story on the big screen, before Stargate...

The CW has announced that they’re developing a new Stephen King TV show called Revelations (a working title for now), which will be a one-hour drama based on King’s short story The Revelations of Becka Paulson.
First published in Rolling Stone magazine in July 1984, the tale follows Becka Paulson, who accidentally shoots herself in the brain with a nail-gun. She miraculously survives, but post-injury she suffers vivid hallucinations and soon believes she’s been recruited by Jesus Christ as his “chosen one.” The hallucinatory Christ then tasks her with stopping the apocalypse by proving that Earth is worth saving.
King’s story is being adapted by Maisie Culver (Last Man Standing), Katie Lovejoy (Dead Inside) and Warner Bros TV. As yet, however, there are no details on casting, when the shoot will begin, or whether the initial one-hour drama could be expanded into a full season.

A former Stargate writer-producer has mounted an online campaign to bring out a new version of the classic science fiction series, which has been off the air since 2011, when the plug was pulled on Stargate: Universe after two seasons.
Joseph Mallozzi, who worked on Stargate: Sg-1, Stargate: Atlantis and Stargate:Universe before becoming the showrunner/writer/Ep of his own Dark Matter, has encouraged fans to take up the call for a new series via the hashtag #WeWantStargate. So far, the response is blowing up, hoping to show series owner MGM that there is a huge fanbase willing to support new episodes.
Stargate started life as a 1994 film by Dean Devlin and Roland Emmerich, then morphed into a television series in 1997 by Brad Wright and Jonathan Glassner. The series evolved into the 2004 Stargate: Atlantis and 2009’s Stargate: Universe.
But fans felt the final TV series was prematurely ended with its story half-told.

There will be no fourth season for Travelers. Netflix has cancelled the sci-fi series after three seasons. Star Eric McCormack revealed the news Friday via social media.
“A lot of you have been asking about the possibility of a season four, but many of you have been saying, ‘Look, if this is it, what a moving and surprising and profound ending it is,’” McCormack wrote. “Well, I’m afraid it is. Who knows what the future holds, but Travelers Program 1, as we call it, is complete … Much love from 3468 in the 21st.”
Created by Brad Wright, and starring McCormack, Travelers is set hundreds of years from now when the last surviving humans discover the means of sending consciousness back through time, directly into people in the 21st century. These “travelers” assume the lives of seemingly random people, while secretly working as teams to perform missions in order to save humanity from a terrible future.

Eric McCormack isn’t exactly sure where he lives. For a few years now, the four-time Emmy nominee (and one-time winner) has lived a double life: Half the year, he’s producing, directing, and acting in Netflix series “Travelers,” playing a badass time traveler who’s trying to save the world. The other half, of course, he’s gay lawyer Will of “Will & Grace,” a character whose appearance on broadcast television was groundbreaking in 1998, and continues on today thanks to the recent NBC revival.
Speaking by phone from his “Will & Grace” dressing room, McCormack credits his parallel lives to “the generosity of Netflix.” The launch of “Travelers,” which is produced in his native Canada, came before the 2016 “Will & Grace” short film that led to the eventual relaunch of the series in 2017.
“That Netflix said yes” to McCormack doing both series, he said, “is a great tribute to them.

Reilly Dolman, who portrays Philip on the show, spoke about the subtleties of his character and the path of his career that led him to Travelers.
Sharp-eyed viewers may have noticed that Dolman and a few other actors from Travelers,...

Sneak Peek "Travelers", the post-apocalyptic future series created by Brad Wright, starring Eric McCormack, Mackenzie Porter, Jared Abrahamson, Nesta Cooper, Reilly Dolman and Patrick Gilmore, debuting Season 3 on Netflix December 14, 2018:
"...in a post-apocalyptic future, thousands of special 'operatives' are tasked with preventing the collapse of society. These operatives, known as 'travelers', have their consciousnesses sent back in time and transferred into the body of present-day individuals who would otherwise be moments from death, to minimize unexpected impact on the timeline.
"The transfer requires the exact location of the target, made possible by twenty-first century smart phones and Gps. Prepared using social media and public records concerning their targets, each traveler must maintain the host's pre-existing life as cover for the rest of their lives, while carrying out missions in teams of five.
"These missions are dictated by the 'Director', an artificial intelligence in the future that monitors the timeline,...

Season 3 of “Travelers,” the time-traveling sci-fi series starring Eric McCormack, will premiere exclusively on Netflix worldwide Dec. 14.
In the series, McCormack (NBC’s “Will & Grace”) plays an FBI agent who leads a team of “travelers” — specially trained operatives who jump back in time from hundreds of years in the future to the 21st century to help prevent the collapse of civilization.
The first two seasons of “Travelers” aired on Corus Entertainment’s Showcase pay-tv channel in Canada and became available on Netflix outside of Canada starting in 2016. Netflix ordered the third season earlier this year.
In season three, special agent Grant MacLaren (McCormack) and the Travelers are pushed to the limit as they deal with loyalty, trust, death — and the ever-growing power of artificial intelligence in the form the Director, the AI-powered entity that dictates their missions. With their existence now leaked to the world, the team must continue...

Neflix said today that it has set December 14 as the premiere date for Season 3 of Travelers, the sci-fi series created by Brad Wright and starring Erik McCormack. The Canadian series was renewed for a third season in May, with Netflix taking over as the exclusive first-run network for the drama series in every territory around the world, including Canada.
The drama was initially commissioned by Showcase, and it premiered in Canada in October 2016 as the highest-rated new fall series.
Travelers is set hundreds of years from now when the last surviving humans discover the means of sending consciousness back through time, directly into people in the 21st century. Science fiction fans everywhere can rejoice!
One of the best Canadian imports in years has been renewed for a third season and will be exclusive to Netflix going forward, Eric McCormack announced today.
Travelers, an engrossing program originally commissioned and aired on Canadian network Showcase, aired in other regions on Netflix. The streaming net has now acquired all rights to it going forward.
Travelers focuses on a group of time travelers who return to the 21st Century from hundreds of years in their future to keep humanity from suffering a terrible fate.
In their future, they have managed a way to travel in time sending only their consciousness, so each arrival is carefully planned utilizing historical records and data about what vessel will next be vacated by the consciousness that currently inhabits it.

The fight for the future will continue on Netflix with the December arrival of Travelers season 3, and we've got the latest trailer.
Travelers Season 3 will continue the mission to save the future as the series was officially renewed by Netflix, but interestingly not by Showcase, which originally produced the show in Canada. Lead actor and producer Eric McCormack made the announcement on Twitter on March 15, 2018, and even revealed that he's directing the Travelers Season 3 premiere.
Executive producers Brad Wright and Carrie Mudd also spoke about the show's departure from Showcase, saying, “We'd like to add our gratitude to our viewers in Canada on Showcase - as well as the Corus and Sky Vision teams - for two extraordinary seasons. We are excited to start shooting Season 3 this March in Vancouver, and to continue the Travelers story for fans in Canada and around the world, only on Netflix.

Television’s love affair with time travel goes back a long way. Naturally, Doctor Who was one of the early proponents of the genre and since then there have been many successful (and many less so) series bringing time travel to the small screen. Quantum Leap mixed science with humour, drama and humanity, Continuum brought some genuinely intelligent ideas and Legends Of Tomorrow has thrown a whole lot of heroes into a mainstream tale of time travel and derring-do.
Over the past twelve months, time travel has been something of a go-to for TV schedules with Timeless, Frequency and mini-series 11.22.63 all coming up with something fresh to say. One show that seems...

The newest time-traveling TV show this season has a unique inspiration behind its creation: social media. “Brad Wright, who created the show… He started with the idea of social media, that’s kind of the germ of the idea,” “Travelers” star Eric McCormack told TheWrap’s Stuart Brazell. “There was a time when history was written by a few people, the winners, now history is written by all of us, all the time… That’s the thing we keep telling our 14-year-olds, you know, anything you do right now, it’s not going anywhere. 2016 is fast drawing to a close, but there’s still enough time for an original Netflix series to make its premiere. And so, following the recent stealth release of Zal Batmanglij’s sci-fi mystery The Oa, the online streamer is on the verge of debuting Travelers.
Cut from the same sci-fi cloth as The Oa, Travelers is a 12-part series hatched by Brad Wright, best known for his work across both Stargate Sg-1 and Stargate: Atlantis. Set in the distant future, the elevator pitch involves a crack team of Travelers who possess the ability to send someone’s consciousness back in time to inhabit a body in the 21st century – think of Wolverine’s jaunt back in time from Days of Future Past.

Another day, another time travel series announced. The trend of timey-wimey TV doesn’t seem to be getting erased from existence any time soon. Will & Grace alum Eric McCormack will star in a new sci-fi series called Travelers on Netflix, the streaming service announced on Tuesday. Netflix is making the project in partnership with Canadian broadcaster Showcase. Travelers (not to be confused with the excellent and short-lived 2007 thriller series Traveler, if any of y’all remember that) comes from Stargate SG-1 creator Brad Wright, and among the cast is Stargate alum Patrick Gilmore. Here’s the full premise — Quantum Leap but with more social media and more FBI: Hundreds of years from now, the last surviving humans discover the means of sending consciousness back through time, directly into people in the 21st century. These "travelers" assume the lives of seemingly random people, while secretly working as teams to perform missions...

Stargate Sg-1 co-creator Brad Wright’s latest TV mission is taking him to Netflix, and he’s recruited Eric McCormack as captain.
TVLine has learned that the streaming giant, in partnership with Canadian broadcaster Showcase, has handed a 12-episode series order to Travelers, a time-traveling sci-fi drama written by Wright and starring Will & Grace and Perception vet McCormack.

After a strong start, 10 seasons and multiple spin-offs took Stargate Sg-1 further and further away from its original premise...
I’ve recently had time to catch-up on the staple of afternoon television when I was a lad, Stargate Sg-1. First launched in 1997, it ran for ten seasons and it’s aged surprisingly well, in no small part due to it being heavily character-driven and fairly horror-focussed for its first two runs. This is most likely thanks to its first five seasons airing on sex-and-guts cable channel Showtime, while its later seasons aired the more clean-cut Syfy channel in the Us. All in all, it’s rip-roaring sci-fi; the kind of ‘explore and fight with interesting plots and great character arcs’ storytelling that filled the void left by successive Star Trek series which never quite captured the wonder of the unknown in the way that the Original Series or The Next Generation did.

Check out this great piece of concept art created for Quentin Tarantino's Django Unchained. The illustration was done by artist Brad Wright, and it features Django bloodily taking out a group of slave traders. There's a lot of violent energy featured in this piece. This was such a fantastic western, and I'm way excited for his next one, The Hateful Eight.

Out of the three franchises with ‘Star’ in the title, Stargate is the most overlooked. While it has its dedicated fan base it never reached the heights of the others despite its 17 season run (admittedly this was over 3 shows but still). For me though it was the one I loved the most, from the first episode I saw (Tin Man) right up to the finale of the second spin off Stargate Universe, this show just clicked with me.
Now I’m going to take a look at each episode, right back from the first. I aim to do one of these a week, so with the amount of episodes produced this should conclude in 2076 or thereabouts. I did give a lot of thought to starting with the original movie but decided that due to the recasts and the different production team I would just start with Sg-1. Maybe I’ll...

When Stargate Sg-1 premiered in the summer of 1997, it was a transitional phase for genre television. The episodic model was the norm and had been mastered by several Star Trek series during that decade. Even so, forward-thinking visionaries like Chris Carter (The X-Files) and J. Michael Straczynski (Babylon 5) were experimenting with a different model. Adapted from the 1994 Roland Emmerich feature Stargate, this series balances the old-school formula with a focus on continuity. Creators Jonathan Glassner and Brad Wright make limited tweaks yet stay rooted in the “mission of the week” structure. The foundation for this approach is the Cheyenne Mountain facility, the site for Stargate Command. Commonly known as the S.G.C, this high-security fictional location is set in Colorado Springs, Colorado. This base feels like it comes from another TV era, but it serves a key purpose in this show. The facility grounds the series in reality...
