Vernon Kay has spoken out about his excitement ahead of taking over Ken Bruce’s morning slot on Radio 2.
Bruce, who has hosted on BBC radio for 45 years, announced his departure from the network in January.
After much speculation, Kay was revealed as Bruce’s replacement last week.
As a regular cover host on The Zoe Ball Breakfast Show, Kay featured on Monday’s edition (27 February) of the programme to discuss his new role.
“My dad is a lorry driver and I said this when I joined Radio 2 and started standing in for Steve Wright, so we've always had Radio 2 on in the background,” he told Ball.
"It is part of us, it is in our DNA – Ken Bruce is mid-mornings,” Kay continued. “You don't think of any other DJ when you think of that slot.
“Whatever channel you choose to listen to, whoever is on mid-mornings, it's the Ken Bruce slot.

Ken Bruce has claimed that BBC bosses have hastened his exit from Radio 2.
Last month, Bruce announced he would leave the corporation after 45 years to host a show on commercial rival, Greatest Hits Radio.
The veteran presenter, 72, has been on the BBC station since 1984, but told listeners in January: “I’ve done everything it is possible to do at Radio 2.”
He has hosted the 9:30am to 12pm weekday show since 1990, and been with the BBC since 1977 when he started out as a presenter on Radio Scotland.
His decision comes after Steve Wright was nudged out his Radio 2 afternoon slot, with Simon Mayo, Graham Norton and Paul O’Grady also moving on in recent months.
“I would stress that this is entirely my decision,” he said at the time. “I will always be very proud of my association with the BBC and Radio 2.”
But in a new tweet posted on Friday 24 February,...

Title: London Road Director: Rufus Norris Starring: Olivia Colman, Anita Dobson, Tom Hardy, Rosalie Craig and Kate Fleetwood. ‘London Road’ documents the events that shook Suffolk in 2006, when the quiet rural town of Ipswich was shattered by the discovery of the bodies of five prostitutes. But the peculiarity of Rufus Norris’ mise en scène is that the account is sung. The film is based on the National Theatre British musical mystery thriller, which in turn is based on the interviews about the Steve Wright Killings. And yet the movie does not follow the conventional musical movie structure, but characters do sing their emotions and lines almost in a messy [ Read More ]

UK, 2015
In 2006, Steve Wright (dubbed the Suffolk Strangler) murdered five prostitutes over a 6-week period. The series of murders menaced the small town of Ipswich and caused the media to descend on the story like a flock of starving vultures, giving the story a national spotlight. The film London Road is a musical/mystery-thriller directed by Rufus Norris and written by Alecky Blythe. The movie recounts the shock-waves sent through a small London Road community after the series of murders began striking too close to home. The film (which was originally a National Theatre production by the same title) is headlined by Olivia Colman and Tom Hardy and features a number of original cast members reprising their roles.

Uncomfortable truths surface as local residents deal with the media firestorm ignited by the murders of five women in 2006
Ipswich murders film shows how street of terror has regained its pride
Everyone is very, very nervous, um, and very unsure of everything, basically…” This adaption of Alecky Blythe and Adam Cork’s verbatim musical, which Rufus Norris first directed at the National Theatre in 2011, does an admirable job of transferring the stage show to screen. Based on interviews conducted in the wake of the Steve Wright “Ipswich Ripper” murders of 2006, the narrative focuses on the peculiar mix of blame, suspicion, regret and rejuvenation with which residents wrestled amid a media firestorm. Pitched between the experimental cinema of Clio Barnard’s The Arbor and the more accessible theatrics of Les Misérables (“It’s a wicked bloody world,” sing the locals awaiting sight of the prisoner), London Road exists in the quarter tones between speech and song,...

While I'm eager to see what Tom Hardy gets up to in the role of Elton John in the developing biopic "Rocketman," he'll sing beforehand in "London Road," and the first trailer is here. Olivia Colman leads the adaptation of the hit musical that tells the true story of Steve Wright, who murdered five sex workers in 2006. The twist is that all the dialogue and lyrics are used from interviews with residents of the English community at the time of the crimes. Here's the official synopsis: Based on the National Theatre’s highly acclaimed verbatim musical directed by Rufus Norris, which he now directs as a feature film, London Road documents an incident from 2006, when the town of Ipswich was shattered by the discovery of the bodies of five women. The residents of London Road had struggled for years with frequent soliciting and kerb-crawling on their street. When Steve Wright,...

Simon Cowell has revealed that he feels more relaxed in his career compared to previous years.
The Britain's Got Talent and X Factor judge told BBC Radio 2's Steve Wright that he doesn't feel the same kind of pressure he did when he first launched Pop Idol in 2001.
"I used to have more pressure, I took it more seriously years ago and got stupidly competitive about it.
"Now I have a more balanced perspective. I genuinely consider myself lucky everyday that we get away with this and people enjoy what we do.
"Then you get more relaxed about it and you have a good time being a judge on the show and not become a producer at the same time, because you literally drive yourself crazy."
Talking about the debate on whether children and other vulnerable people should take part in TV talent shows, Cowell said: "You take every person as an individual.

It is a small financial lifeline for the industry which is no longer receiving drama production investment from the national government agency after it spent its entire annual $42 million budget in just six months.
Among the new feature film projects to receive funding is comedy-drama The Grip, written by Tony Briggs (The Sapphires). It follows five young Australian businessmen who discover the secret to winning the pokies and develop Robin Hood-like reputations. David Field (The Combination) will direct.
Writer Felicity Price and director Kieran Darcy-Smith (Wish You Were Here) have also received funding to develop a new (as yet) untitled thriller. It follows social misfit Vincent, who holds a flame for 17-year-old Amber, but when his hopes are crushed he acts impulsively,...

Peter Kay has revealed that he is making a spoof of TV show The Secret Millionaire. The comedian described his project while speaking on Radio 2's Steve Wright in the Afternoon show. A knotty documentary about punk's Oi! faction captures the rage festering in the late 1970s East End
Oi! was punk's extremist wing, given more to skinheads than mohawks. Richard England's knotty, tricky doc strives to give the movement context through the story of the Cockney Rejects' Jeff and Micky Geggus, who exploded out of a cramped Canning Town semi in the late 1970s with a tape recorder full of "four-bar shitter songs", and came to provide the soundtrack for West Ham's hooligan element. The Gegguses could, you suspect, talk all day: even their lighter showbiz anecdotes – flattening Steve Wright, terrorising Legs & Co – have a revealing edge, yet this band of boneheads still drew the line at swastikas. "We bashed a few people, but fuck 'em," is the unrepentant conclusion: its subjects' defiant gobbiness – and the participation of several variously nostalgic ex-hooligans – is problematic, but the film amply describes the...

Bee Gees star Robin Gibb has declared that he feels "fantastic" now that his liver cancer has "almost gone". The 'How Deep Is Your Love' singer has been receiving chemotherapy after being diagnosed with the disease last year. Gibb provided fans with an update on his health during an interview with BBC Radio 2's Steve Wright, saying that doctors only need to perform a "mopping-up operation". David Cameron has said that The King's Speech is his favourite film he's seen recently. The Prime Minister called Tom Hooper's Oscar-winning drama, starring Colin Firth and Helena Bonham Carter, the "best of British cinema". Cameron told BBC Radio 2's Steve Wright in the Afternoon: "I saw [The King's Speech] and thought it was fantastic. It just showed that films don't have to be fantastically expensive in order to be really brilliant. (more)...

The prime minister discussed his favourite films and TV programmes with Steve Wright – but perhaps the pressures of the job are getting to him
The Smiths, Radiohead, Pulp: there was a time when David Cameron's cultural tastes were simply incongruous. Thank God for public office, then, which – reassuringly – seems to have turned him towards mediocrity.
Last year, he expressed a love of posh west London folksters, Mumford & Sons – no surprise there – and just yesterday, in an interview for Radio 2's Steve Wright in the Afternoon, the Pm extolled the virtues of industry favourite The King's Speech. Again, that won't raise eyebrows: as we know, Cameron went for new year's walkies with the film's star, Helena Bonham Carter.
So what else did we learn? Well, Big Dave bloody loves murder mysteries. In April, it was Danish drama The Killing. Lately, Cameron told Wright, it's been detective series Case Histories, and legal drama Injustice.

This week's "Survivor: Redemption Island" exit interview was with Steve Wright, 51-year-old former NFL veteran and yet another member of the nearly depleted Zapatera tribe. And that, of course, meant only one thing: Lots and lots of talk about rice, or at least the circumstances through which a war over rice led to a war over race between Steve and Phillip. Not surprisingly, Steve still thinks that Phillip is crazy and still insists that calling Phillip crazy is a reflection on the Former Federal Agent's sanity and not the color of his skin. What else did Steve have...

"Survivor: Redemption Island" reveals 16 out of 18 people who have joined the latest quest to win the title and a million dollar prize. Beside going with a new rule, this season has a number of stereotypes and "everybody you can imagine" as contestants.
Two castaways are still kept a secret but they are from the show's past seasons. Rumor has it, they would be Boston Rob Mariano ("Survivor: Marquesas", "Survivor: All-Stars" and "Survivor: Heroes vs. Villains") and Russell Hantz ("Survivor: Samoa" and "Survivor: Heroes vs. Villains"). The show traditionally has equal number between women and men, so with 9 women already revealed, it is most probable that the mystery castaways are of male.
"Survivor: Redemption Island" premieres Wednesday, February 16 at 8 P.M. Et/Pt on CBS. The voted off contestant won't immediately go home but is banished to redemption island where he or she would live alone until the next one is voted out.

"Survivor: Redemption Island" has just fueled the fire that Boston Rob Mariano and Russell Hantz are joining the cast this season. CBS has said that there are 18 cast members, but there are only 16 revealed so far on their site.
Furthermore, the show is always gender-equal and nine of the 16 are women, meaning if they add two surprise guests who are both male, there will be nine of each gender.
The Rob-Russell rumors started when both were featured at the finale for the last "Survivor," which was when CBS announced the "Redemption Island" twist.
Are you excited at the prospect of Rob and Russell facing off (or perhaps joining forces) on "Survivor"? We aren't sure how we feel about it. Their rivalry during "Heroes vs. Villains" wasn't that fun to watch, to be honest. But it sure would be fun to see them work together.

He replied that he'll "probably" perform - but quickly quipped, "I'll probably be outside busking." British actress Jaime Winstone had a harrowing time researching her role as a murdered prostitute - she met with the woman's devastated family to perfect the character.
Winstone, daughter of The Departed star Ray Winstone, took on the part of Anneli Alderton in Five Daughters, a BBC drama telling the story of five sex workers murdered by serial killer Steve Wright in England in 2006.
And preparing for the role left the young actress distraught after she held talks with Alderton's relatives to get a greater understanding of the woman she was playing.
Winstone tells Britain's Sunday Express, "That was different because my character, Anneli Alderton, was a real person and suffered so much. The script was very well written but I wanted to know a bit more about her so I had some contact with the family.
"I was so concerned about getting it right for them. I think we all wanted to show that these girls weren't just prostitutes - they were people. I did feel quite upset then. I thought of my mum, her mum and what these girls went through."
Wright was jailed for life in 2008 after being found guilty of all five murders.
