Ok, how should we start this one… Scarlett Johansson and Sam Rockwell are attached to star in movie titled Lunatic at Large, which is based on a story from late filmmaker Stanley Kubrick and pulp fiction novelist Jim Thompson.
Yeah, yeah, we know Kubrick passed away in 1999! But, see, that’s why you should keep all your work in one big library, or room, or box, or whatever…
So, this is not going to be horror movie, but a dark mystery to discover which person, of several plausible candidates, is an axe-murderer and escaped mental hospital patient. Ok, maybe we have some parts that look like horror, but it’s not!
A previous draft by Stephen Clarke was set in 1956 and centered on an ex-carnival worker with anger management issues and a nervous, attractive barfly he picks up in a tavern. Or, if you want some 2006 description of the script,...

Sam Rockwell and Scarlett Johansson will re-team on "Lunatic at Large", a film based on a story by novelist Jim Thompson ("The Killer Inside Me") says Production Weekly.
Set in mid 50's New York City, the story follows an aggressive ex-carnival worker and the shy but attractive woman he picks up in a bar. Their night soon has some strange elements to it including a spooky mountain lodge, a car chase, and various portents of doom. A nighttime carnival sequence becomes a big set piece.
Thompson penned a treatment of the film for filmmaker Stanley Kubrick back in the 50's with whom he had worked twice before on "The Killing" and "Paths of Glory". That treatment wasn't discovered until after Kubrick's death in 1999.
Scribe Stephen Clarke has penned the script which expands on that treatment while Chris Palmer will direct. Rockwell and Johansson both star in the upcoming "Iron Man" sequel.

Stanley Kubrick walks among us. A long lost project co-written by Kubrick and author Jim Thompson will serve as the basis for a new film called Lunatic at Large, which Production Weekly says will star Iron Man 2 cast members Sam Rockwell and Scarlett Johansson.
The new version of the script has been written by Stephen Clarke based on a Thompson-Kubrick treatment that was long thought to be lost but was unearthed a few years ago by the late director's son-in-law. Here's a New York Times summation of Lunatic at Large:
"Set in New York in 1956, it tells the story of Johnnie Sheppard, an ex-carnival worker with serious anger-management issues, and Joyce, a nervous, attractive barfly he picks up in a Hopperesque tavern scene. There's a newsboy who flashes a portentous headline, a car chase over a railroad crossing with a train bearing down, and a romantic interlude in a spooky,...

Scarlett Johansson and Sam Rockwell are attached to star in Lunatic at Large based on a story from late filmmaker Stanley Kubrick and pulp fiction novelist Jim Thompson, according to Production Weekly.
Lunatic is not a horror story, despite the title, but a dark mystery to discover which person, of several plausible candidates, is an axe-murderer and escaped mental hospital patient. A previous draft by Stephen Clarke was set in 1956 and centered on an ex-carnival worker with anger management issues and a nervous, attractive barfly he picks up in a tavern.
It was described by one-time producer Charles Finch as “a wild and crazy Kerouac style adventure. In Kubrick terms it’s like A Clockwork Orange meets The Shining with a fantastic twist at the end,” according to Kubrick Movies. Kubrick and Thompson collaborated on The Killing and Paths of Glory.

Although he lived a relatively long and full life, it often feels as though Stanley Kubrick was taken from us before his time. Kubrick died at the age of 70 on March 7, 1999 having made a total of 13 feature films including 2001: A Space Odyssey, A Clockwork Orange and Full Metal Jacket. His final film, Eyes Wide Shut, released after his death in July 1999.
Currently on display at an Edinburgh Festival exhibition are the late cinematic master’s research sources for what was to be his next film after Eyes Wide Shut called The Aryan Papers. The Kubrick family now wants for his final film to be realized for the world to see, even if only influenced by Kubrick’s vision and finished screenplay. Kubrick’s brother-in-law and occasional executive producer Jan Harlan says Ang Lee is a possible candidate to helm the project.
This film was to be based on the novel ‘Wartime’ by Louis Begley.
