Landing on Sky’s U.K. arm as England’s cricketers enter the knockout phase of this winter’s T20 World Cup, Ashley Gething’s one-off documentary “The Greatest Game” benefits from innately dramatic raw material. Held at Lord’s in 2019, the one-day World Cup final between England and New Zealand was quickly framed by some experts as the most thrilling cricket game ever witnessed: a high-stakes encounter before a roaring full house at the sport’s spiritual home with an outcome that remained in doubt until the last ball of a so-called “superover” — rare and unusual occurrence that effectively serves as a tiebreak.
As commentators on the day remarked, it was fairy-tale stuff, a screenplay you couldn’t write for fear of being dismissed as a fantasist. Two evenly matched sides, all-rounder Ben Stokes’ last-gasp heroics, extraordinary strokes of luck and flashes of skill: they’re all here, compressed...

Cuttack, Sep 30 (Ians) Hamilton Masakadza’s blazing bat, with able support from fellow Zimbabwean Solomon Mire (28) and New Zealander Ross Taylor (29), helped the India Capitals inflict a seven-wicket defeat on the Manipal Tigers in the 10th game of the Legends League Cricket (LLC) on Thursday.
Masakadza’s explosive knock of 68 not out off 39 balls (seven fours and four sixes) was crucial as the Capitals chased down a 162-run target with 16 balls to spare. That innings from the 39-year-old overshadowed the effort of Jesse Ryder and Mohammad Kaif from the rival team earlier in the match.
Ryder and Kaif played like they never went away from competitive cricket as they shared a 126-run partnership to help the Tigers post 161/5. While the left-handed Ryder made 76 off 56 balls with five fours and an equal number of sixes, Kaif’s contribution of 67 off 48 balls was no less important. Kaif hit nine boundaries and a six.

Lucknow, Sep 20 (Ians) Soon after Yusuf Pathan helped India Maharajas beat World Giants in a special benefit match at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata on September 16, Irfan Pathan shared a video of his brother Yusuf with the groundsmen on social media. The caption read: “There is still a lot of cricket left in you, Yusuf.”
Irfan’s comments weren’t totally off the mark.
Yusuf has hit a purple patch in the Legends League Cricket (LLC), which is being played in India for the first time.
After scoring a half-century against World Giants, the big-hitting Bhilwara Kings batter followed it up with a 44 against Manipal Tigers. He peppered the ground with his shots, hitting mammoth sixes and sumptuous boundaries at will, the organisers informed in a release on Tuesday.

Kolkata, Sep 17 (Ians) Two centuries and an exciting finish lit up the Eden Gardens on Saturday night in an electrifying contest between the Gmr-backed India Capitals and Adani Sportsline’s Gujarat Giants in the opening game of the Legends League Cricket 2022, which is being held in India for the first time.
It was a night of unexpected heroes, with Ashley Renaldo Nurse and Kevin O’Brien stealing the spotlight in a game that also involved Jacques Kallis and Virender Sehwag. First, it was Nurse who scorched the ground with an innings of 103 not out off 43 balls to help the Capitals post 179/7 in 20 overs. And while one thought it would be almost impossible for anyone to better Nurse’s effort on the night, Giants’ O’Brien came up with a fitting reply, smashing 107 off 61 balls.

London, Sep 6 (Ians) England’s former right-arm pace bowler and a member of the 2019 World Cup-winning team, Liam Plunkett, has predicted an ‘explosion’ of T20 cricket in the United States, and revealed that more than 100 million pound sterling in funding from private investors such as tech giants Microsoft and Adobe has been secured for Major League Cricket (Mlc).
Plunkett, 37, recently signed a three-year deal with The Philadelphians in Minor League Cricket (MiLC) in the 2022 edition. MiLC is the feeder to Mlc.
“It’s go big or go home. That is how they do stuff in America. And with the money that is behind this, it is going to be massive. I think it will explode,” Plunkett, who has played 89 ODIs and 22 T20Is for England, was quoted as saying by Daily Mail on Tuesday.
The tall pacer added the new professional T20 league will certainly attract top players from across the world including English stars.

South Africa skipper Faf du Plessis won the toss and elected to bowl against England in the World Cup opener at The Oval on Thursday. For South Africa, Dale Steyn, Chris Morris, David Miller, and Tabraiz Shamsi are not part of the playing XI.? England has not included Liam Dawson, Mark Wood, Tom Curran and James Vince for the opener.
At the toss, Faf: Going to have a bowl. Early start at the Oval, if there's anything in the wicket, it's now. Shamsi, Miller, Morris, Steyn not playing. Steyn's around 80%. The start of the World Cup. It's going to be a good one. Ngidi and Kg have been exceptional over the last couple of years. Good to see Amla scoring runs in the warm-up.
Morgan: Would've looked to do the same. The wicket looks really good. It's set fair all day, shouldn't change much. Yes, Wood was available for selection.
