Sarah Silverman is getting candid about retiring the “arrogant, ignorant” character she rode to fame early in her career because of Donald Trump.
The comedian stopped by Fail Better With David Duchovny, from Lemonada Media, where she opened up about evolving with the times in her comedy and how the former president’s election played a part in one of those evolutions.
“It wasn’t really a conscious, ‘Hey, that stuff doesn’t work, so I’m going to go a different way,'” she told David Duchovny on the podcast. “I think I just very naturally started changing. My first comedy special, Jesus Is Magic, is like, ‘I’m Sarah Silverman, but I’m totally doing a character’ and that character — it carried on into my Comedy Central show, The Sarah Silverman Program — was an arrogant ignorant.”
Silverman continued, “So having Trump win, not that it carried through up until Trump was elected,...

Variety has broken the news that there’s a new horror film called Murder with the Stars heading our way – and this one’s coming from an unexpected creative team. Actor Jonathan Silverman, who is best known for his work in comedies like Caddyshack II and the Weekend at Bernie’s duology, will be directing the film, which is being produced by Jeff Franklin, the creator of the TV show Full House and its follow-up Fuller House!
Comedian Craig Shoemaker has written the screenplay… so, while the project isn’t being referred to as a horror comedy at this time, we can probably expect to see a good amount of comedy in the finished product. Shoemaker has previously written episodes of Just the Ten of Us and Fuller House, as well as the films The Lovemaster and Totally Baked.

“Full House” and “Fuller House” creator Jeff Franklin is set to produce a new horror film, “Murder with the Stars.” Craig Shoemaker penned the screenplay and will serve as a producer, with Jonathan Silverman set to direct and act in the movie.
“This concept came to me several months ago, and I knew I was onto something unique and fun,” Shoemaker said. “Since then, the creative process has unfolded effortlessly with two old friends signing on, Jonathan Silverman and Jeff Franklin. It’s a killer team. In the case of this horror film, pun intended.”
“Murder with the Stars” will be created in partnership with Jaclyn and Ike Suri of Pelican Point Media, a film finance and production company, that has produced horror and comedy films like the 2016 thriller “Exposed,” starring Ana de Armas and Keanu Reeves. Silverman is repped by Authentic Talent and Brave Artists, and Shoemaker is repped by Innovative Artists.

Sarah Silverman appeared on David Duchovny’s Fail Better podcast this week and took the opportunity to reflect on why she dropped her formative “Sarah Silverman” character amid the political rise of Donald Trump. She explained she decided to move on from the “arrogant ignorant” character she previously embodied for more complex reasons than audiences “not laughing at my racist jokes anymore.”
“It wasn’t really a conscious, ‘Hey, that stuff doesn’t work, so I’m going to go a different way,'” Silverman told Duchovny. “I think I just very naturally started changing.

In 1977, aspiring cartoonist Matt Groening moved from his hometown of Portland, Oregon to Los Angeles with dreams of becoming a writer. Like most people who move to Los Angeles with dreams of becoming a writer, he took on some of the most menial jobs imaginable. Groening worked in a sewage treatment plant, as a dishwasher, and as a waiter. All the while, Groening worked on what would become his signature creation, the "Life in Hell" comic strip.
Groening would leave "Life in Hell" comics in a small corner of Licorice Pizza, the celebrated Los Angeles record store where he occasionally worked. It was an embittered strip about modern life, a harsh critique of life, love, school, and work. Groening attacked everything the establishment celebrated as normal and good, finding nothing but misery in the real world.
"Life in Hell" was picked up by Wet Magazine and, later the Los Angeles Reader.

Oppenheimer took the top prize at the 2024 Producers Guild of America Awards on Sunday night.
The film won the Darryl F. Zanuck Award for outstanding producer of theatrical motion pictures, a day after taking top prize at the Screen Actors Guild Awards.
Other big winners were Beef, which also won at the SAG Awards and Sunday’s Film Independent Spirit Awards, along with Succession and The Bear, both of which also won SAG Awards on Saturday.
Oppenheimer producer Emma Thomas accepted the theatrical motion picture award, noting that in a room full of producers, “This means so much coming from you, this room is full of people whose work we admire,” adding, “You know how hard the job can be, you also know how great the job can be; it’s the best job on set.” She also called director Christopher Nolan (who is also her husband) “the best producer you can possibly hope for.

A group of authors, including Sarah Silverman and Ta-Nehisi Coates, were dealt an arguably expected setback in a copyright infringement case against OpenAI. On Monday, Feb. 12, a federal judge threw out some, but not all of the claims contained in the lawsuit, which alleges OpenAI’s ChatGPT program was trained on copyrighted books.
The ruling mirrors a decision in a separate case brought by some of the same author plaintiffs (including Silverman) against Meta over how it trains its artificial intelligence language models. Like Meta, OpenAI had asked a judge...

Sarah Silverman is taking a new swing at David Letterman’s fondly recalled “Stupid Pet Tricks,” and it would be easy to say something about the comic “going to the dogs” or “hoping the new show has legs.” But Silverman has a lot more in store than skateboarding canines and bubble-popping reptiles.
That’s right, this isn’t your dad’s “Stupid Pet Tricks.”
“The stupid pet tricks happen in front of the camera,” says Silverman during a recent interview, but “we wanted to make it kind of a ‘Muppet Show’ where you see behind the scenes.” Every episode has a storyline that might involve a writers’ room with just one human, or Jack McBrayer as a rival host with his own animal program. Will Ferrell, Jon Hamm, Reggie Watts and Judd Apatow are among the other guests who take on roles within the program. Even Letterman makes an appearance.

During her first night on the air after the resolution of the SAG-AFTRA strike, “Daily Show” guest host Sarah Silverman wasted no time celebrating the historic Hollywood moment.
“It is a big night. The SAG strike is over, which means Hollywood can finally get back to what they do best: turning your children gay,” Silverman said at the top of her final episode hosting the Comedy Central show.
Most of Silverman’s opening monologue was devoted to dissecting Wednesday night’s GOP debate. But the comedian did sneak a couple of strike-related jabs into her time on the show.
While talking about the first public appearance of Tim Scott’s girlfriend, Mindy Noce, Silverman gushed that it was nice Scott “finally” found love “with a respectable-looking woman just two months before the Iowa caucus.”

The end of the actors strike is the talk of the town, and late night is no exception.
“Thank you for joining us on ‘take your actor back to work day’ here in Hollywood,” Jimmy Kimmel said during his opening monologue. “Where most of the movie and TV business has been at a stop, a standstill, since May.”
He continued: “Writers’ Strike started in May. But at long last, the actor’s strike is finally over. A lot of people were affected. The Hallmark Channel immediately started shooting all 1,200 of its Christmas movies this morning. One member of the negotiating committee said that there were ‘tears of exhilaration and joy’ in the room after the deal was approved, and it only took them a few takes. It was very realistic.”
Jokes aside, Kimmel concluded: “Finally, actors can get back to their real jobs…which is…playing people with real jobs.

Sarah Silverman has one group to thank for the Democrat sweep that happened following Tuesday’s election: the Illuminati.
“Democrats were the big winners last night, which meant all those human sacrifices were worth it,” Silverman said while hosting “The Daily Show.” “Shoutout to my fellow Illuminati members. Guys, we did it.”
Democratic voters showed up for Tuesday’s election as across the country strides were made to protect abortion rights. According to the AP, supporters of abortions rights won a ballet measure in Ohio, a Democratic governor in the primarily Republican Kentucky held onto his position partially due to campaigning for reproductive rights and a Democrat won a seat on the Pennsylvania Supreme Court after promising to uphold abortion rights.
Silverman zeroed in on these victories during the back-half of her monologue. Specifically, she mocked the report that Republicans are trying to develop a better anti-abortion term than “pro-life...

Trump appeared in court for his civil fraud trial once again this week but, at this point, Sarah Silverman thinks prosecutors are “wasting time” by continuing to ask about the disgraced ex-president’s financial documents, instead of trying to get to the bottom of certain scandalous rumors.

But, Silverman cut him some slack on that, joking that, with so many trials to keep track of, “of course Trump isn’t focused.”

Leslie Jones and Sarah Silverman are each being given a second week of guest hosting duties on Comedy Central’s still-without-a-permanent-host “The Daily Show,” which has been going with a lineup of guests to preside when not impacted by the now-settled writers strike. Jones took the hosting reins in January, the first week after the show returned to the air following Trevor Noah’s departure. (Noah’s final episode aired December 8 of last year.) We now know who will be sitting behind the Daily Show news desk — at least temporarily — when the Comedy Central series returns from its long, WGA strike-dictated break.
As previously announced, the late-night program will return with new episodes on Monday, Oct. 16 — although the show’s new, yet-to-be-named permanent host will not take his/her seat behind the desk until 2024. In the meantime, guest hosts will continue to fill the void left by Trevor Noah.

Comedian Sarah Silverman isn’t in a laughing mood these days as she and two others have sued Meta and OpenAI for using their original content without their permission.
Silverman, Richard Kadrey and Christopher Golden filed a lawsuit in California against Facebook’s parent company and ChatGPT for allegedly using their content to train their artificial intelligence programs.
The lawsuits allege that most of the material used in their training comes from copyrighted works used “without consent, without credit and without compensation.”
The catalyst for their lawsuit is reportedly leaked information about how the two companies operated their artificial intelligence department. The three authors then found that their books were included in the materials used to hone AI capabilities in conversing with a more human tone.
The books in question were specified in the lawsuits as Silverman’s The Bedwetter, Kadrey’s Sandman Slim and Golden’s Ararat.

Sarah Silverman and two other authors filed class-action lawsuits against OpenAI and Meta, claiming that the companies’ artificial intelligence software programs pilfer from their copyrighted works.
The lawsuit reflects a growing debate over when emerging artificial intelligence technology crosses the line into infringing on copyrighted works, a question that came up in a recent congressional hearing featuring OpenAI CEO Sam Altman.
In the lawsuit, Silverman and two other authors, Christopher Golden and Richard Kadrey, claim that OpenAI’s ChatGPT relies on their works for its training dataset.
The authors, who are seeking class-action status, say they did not consent to their works being used in this way, but they were “ingested and used to train ChatGPT.”
“Indeed, when ChatGPT is prompted, ChatGPT generates summaries of Plaintiffs’ copyrighted works –something only possible if ChatGPT was trained on Plaintiffs’ copyrighted works,” the lawsuit states.

Sarah Silverman is part of a new copyright class action suit against OpenAI, which alleges that ChatGPT was illegally trained on copyrighted books.
Silverman is one of three lead plaintiffs, alongside the authors Christopher Golden and Richard Kadrey. They claim, on behalf of the prospective class, that their books were part of a trove of copyrighted material “copied by OpenAI” and used to train ChatGPT “without consent, without credit, and without compensation.”
The new lawsuit is similar to one brought by authors Paul Tremblay and Mona Awad against OpenAI earlier this year.

The 2023 Tony Awards swiftly moved through this year’s ceremony unscripted amid the ongoing writers strike.
The two unscripted telecasts (which included a preshow on Pluto and the main telecast on CBS) appeared to go smoothly, thanks to quick speeches and introductions, historic wins for Alex Newell and J. Harrison Ghee, live musical performances and an undercurrent of dance that propelled the action forward. Among the top honors, Kimberly Akimbo won best musical, Leopoldstadt won best play, Parade won best revival of a musical, and Hollywood names such as Jodie Comer and Sean Hayes took home trophies. And it even ended on time.
Host Ariana DeBose acknowledged the unusual task of running an unscripted show in her opening number, which began by zooming in on a binder that read “script,” but was filled with blank pages. She then danced her way through the hallways of the United Palace theater in Washington Heights,...
