Sanaa Hamri, executive producer and director of the Prime Video fantasy series “The Wheel of Time,” feels like she’s just getting started.
The Moroccan-born filmmaker began her career in the late 1990s directing music videos for artists such as Prince, Mariah Carey, Sting and Nicki Minaj. She transitioned to television in the mid-2000s, directing episodes of “Desperate Housewives,” “Glee,” and “Nashville.” Hamri made her feature directorial debut in 2006 with the romantic comedy “Something New” for Focus Features. She has since directed the hit 2008 sequel “The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants 2” for Warner Bros. and the romantic comedy “Just Wright” for Searchlight in 2010.
With an overall deal with Amazon Prime Video, she’s on the Primetime Emmy Awards ballot for directing “The Wheel of Time” episode “What Was Meant to Be.” The second season finale follows Rand al’Thor (Josha Stradowski) and others to an inevitable showdown with their most formidable enemies yet.

“Prepare yourselves.”
That’s what a sword weilding Galadriel (Morfydd Clark) declares to Elrond (Robert Aramayo) and her other warrior companions in the just released teaser trailer for Season 2 of Prime Video’s The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power – see below:
Season 2 of the J.R.R. Tolkien adaptation is coming on August 29, and “prepare yourselves” just might be an understatement.
One word: Sauron. Another word: Unleashed.
Much grittier and darker than most of Season 1, the just released peek at Season 2 also gives a brief look at the Charlie Vicker’s portrayed Mordor master’s Dark Tower. As well, there’s some new rings and their creation in there too, and one Hell of an explosion that could rival Mount Doom’s big blow-up in Season 1. Or, as Khazad-dûm Prince Durin (Owain Arthur) puts it in said minute-long teaser: “an evil, ancient and powerful has returned” — as you can see above.

In the second season, threats new and very old seek out the young friends from the Two Rivers, now scattered over the world. The woman who found and guided them is now powerless to help and they must find other sources of strength.
Ahead of the Season 2 premiere, the first season of the show will stream on Amazon Freevee for free starting July 14.

“The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power” is the latest marquee TV series to move forward with production amid the ongoing WGA strike, but the Amazon Prime Video show will be doing so without the services of executive producers J.D. Payne and Patrick McKay.
The sweeping fantasy series has 19 days of filming remaining, sources confirm to Variety, but per WGA strike rules, Payne, McKay and any other writer-producers are barred from participating in any writing-based duties during production while the strike continues — including making creative decisions on set. Instead, the show’s non-writing executive producers (like Lindsey Weber), directors and crew are overseeing production on the U.K.-based shoot.
According to a source close to the production, there have been multiple units filming on “Rings of Power,” including night shoots, for much of the duration of the season given its feature-film level scope. Payne and McKay also...

Updated with content spend stats from annual report: Giant Amazon said its total expenses for video and music came to 16.6 billion last year, up from 13 billion in 2021.
Video and music expense includes licensing and production costs associated with content offered within Amazon Prime memberships, and costs associated with digital subscriptions and sold or rented content, according to the company’s latest annual report that followed fourth quarter financials yesterday.
On an earnings call Thursday, CFO Brian Olsavsky noted that Amazon spent 7 billion on originals, live sports and licensed content in 2022, up from 5 billion the year before. It’s unclear if those figures include all worldwide video content, which is increasingly central to Amazon’s strategy in driving membership for Prime, the biggest loyalty program in the world and the beating heart of the company.

Season 1 of the generally well-received "The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power" series came to an epic and satisfying end exactly two months ago, but fans of the sprawling and large-scale production knew that they would have to settle in for quite a long wait before seeing where the adventure took all our favorite heroes and villains next. We know that all the surviving cast of characters, from Morfyyd Clark's Galadriel to Robert Aramayo's Elrond to Markella Kavenagh's Nori to Charlie Vickers' Sauron, will be back for another round (although with one notable recasting). Ditto for a batch of new actors who will be joining the fray, setting up an even bigger storyline to come in season 2. But what about the creative team behind the camera?

A trio of filmmakers will be spearheading “The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power” Season 2. Prime Video announced on Wednesday that Charlotte Brändström, Sanaa Hamri and Louise Hooper will be directing the second season of the “Lord of the Rings” series, which is currently in production in the U.K.
Brändström directed two episodes in the show’s first season – “Undûn” and “The Eye” – and will be directing four episodes in Season 2, for which she will also serve as a co-executive producer. Hamri and Hooper will direct two episodes each.
Not returning from Season 1 is J.A. Bayona, who helped get the series off the ground by directing the pilot and second episode, and Wayne Che Yip who directed four episodes including the finale.

It’s a wonder that Florence Pugh even returned to Hollywood after a bad experience on a botched Fox sitcom.
“The Wonder” actress Pugh was cast in the pilot for Fox’s “Studio City” dramedy in 2015 when she was 19. Directed by Sanaa Hamri and written by Krista Vernoff, the semi-autobiographical series centered on a singer (Pugh) who discovers her songwriter father (Eric McCormack) is a celebrity drug dealer. Heather Graham also starred as Pugh’s former stepmother.
“I felt very lucky and grateful, and couldn’t believe that I had got this top-of-the-game job,” Pugh recently recalled to The Telegraph, citing that she assumed her Los Angeles TV series experience would be similar to that of U.K. psychological drama “The Falling,” on which she made her onscreen debut in 2013.

USC Annenberg’s Inclusion Initiative released its annual “Inclusion in the Director’s Chair” which analyzes 1,500 top films from 2007 to 2021 for gender and race/ethnicity representation.
Overall, there have been significant gains for women and people of color directors but improvement is still needed, the study says.
Notably, the percentage of women directors of top=grossing movies reached 15% in 2020, an all-time high. They include Nia DaCosta, Olivia Wilde, Sanaa Hamri, Ava DuVernay, Cathy Yan, Patty Jenkins, Patricia Riggen, Sam Taylor-Johnson, Lilly and Lana Wachowski, Catherine Hardwicke, Gina Prince-Bythewood, and Loveleen Tandan, among others.
The percentage of directors from underrepresented racial/ethnic groups helming top-grossing films also reached a 15-year high in 2021 though, men benefitted the most, the study finds. The percentage of women of color directors did not change across the study.

Sanaa Hamri has joined Amazon Prime Video’s The Wheel of Time for Season 2 as executive producer and director of half of the season. The news comes ahead of the series premiere on Nov. 19.
The Amazon adaptation of Robert Jordan’s books is set in a sprawling, epic world where magic exists, but only women can use it. The trailer also gives first glimpses as Rosamund Pike’s Moiraine, a member of the shadowy and influential all-female organization called the Aes Sedai, who arrives in the small town of Two Rivers. There, she embarks on a dangerous, world-spanning journey with five young men and women, one of whom is prophesied to be the Dragon Reborn, who will either save or destroy humanity.

Fox is not moving forward with the “Empire” spinoff that would have followed Taraji P. Henson’s Cookie Lyon, an individual with knowledge of the project told TheWrap.
The project, which is backed by “Empire” co-creators Lee Daniels and Danny Strong, “follows what’s next for Cookie.” Strong was attached to co-write the script along with Stacy A. Littlejohn and Yolonda Lawrence, with Sanaa Hamri on board to direct. Executive producers include Daniels, Strong, Littlejohn, Lawrence, Hamri and Henson, along with Brian Grazer and Samie Falvey for Imagine Entertainment.
20th Television will shop the series to other outlets, the individual added.
Henson starred alongside Terrence Howard on all six seasons of Fox’s “Empire,” which aired its pandemic-forced series finale on April 21. That episode was the 18th out of a planned 20 for the drama’s sixth and final season, but production shutdowns made it impossible to complete the final two episodes in time.

The potential “Empire” spinoff centered on Cookie Lyon starring Taraji P. Henson is not moving ahead at Fox, Variety has learned.

Fox has opted not to proceed with a spinoff of its signature drama series Empire that centered on the larger-than-life character of Cookie Lyon, played by Golden Globe winner Taraji P. Henson. Disney TV Studios’ 20th Television, which produces the project with Imagine TV, is currently shopping it to Disney outlets ABC and Hulu, I hear.
The mothership series, created by Lee Daniels and Danny Strong, ran on Fox for six seasons. A spinoff of such a successful series comes with a high price tag, which is hard for a broadcast network to cover, especially when it is not affiliated with the studio as is the case with Fox and 20th TV, which became separated by the Disney-Fox acquisition toward the end of Empire‘s run.
While Fox brass felt this was not the right show for the network at this time, they are committed to staying in business with the creative collaborators of Empire and the proposed spinoff. The network recently opened a writers room for drama Our Kind of People, from Lee, Karen Gist and 20th TV, with an eye to a series order that appears likely.
20th TV and Imagine TV are currently exploring a potential new home for the Empire spinoff within the Disney TV universe, with ABC and Hulu as primary targets. Strong and Henson are both under deals at 20th TV and both have other projects in various stages of development. Strong is working on series Dopesick for Hulu, starring Michael Keaton and directed by Barry Levinson, which started shooting in Virginia last week. Henson also has a TV series in the works. Outside of her 20th TV deal, she will make her feature directorial debut and star in Two-Faced.

Oscar producers Lynette Howell Taylor and Stephanie Allain are promising that the 92nd Oscars will have plenty of diversity on display on Sunday.
“Lynette and I have always embraced diversity and inclusion in our work and we already had plans before the nominations were announced to celebrate that, so I think you’ll see that in the presenters and performers,” Allain said at a 25-minute news conference Wednesday at the Hollywood and Highland site of the show.
The diversity issue has been highlighted by Cynthia Erivo, who played Harriet Tubman in the film “Harriet” being the only one person of color among the 20 actors nominated for Academy Awards and no female director being nominated in the directing category.
Howell Taylor said the ceremonies will be staged with inclusion in mind with a more open presentation area. “It will be less of a proscenium,” she added.
Allain said Kobe Bryant, who died in a Jan.

Dr. Stacy L. Smith and the USC Annenberg Inclusion Initiative have wasted no time in the new year when it comes to keeping tabs on diversity in Hollywood. On Tuesday morning, they released a new research brief that revealed 10.6% of the directors of 2019’s top movies were women. This marks a watershed moment as it is the highest percentage of female directors in the top films in 13 years. Still, 10.6% is a considerably low number that could afford to be higher — a lot higher.
Nonetheless, the movement of the needle should be celebrated. The study examined the presence of female directors working across the 1,300 top-grossing films from 2007 to 2019. The findings found that 12 women each directed one of the 100 top films in 2019. While the overall percentage of female directors across the 13-year time frame remains 4.8%, 2019’s number was the highest across the years examined.

The Academy has named the producers of the 2020 Oscars show, airing Sunday, February 9, 2020.
