The group, named Apparatjik, also consists of A-ha guitarist Magne Furuholmen, Mew singer-guitarist Jonas Bjerre and producer Martin Terefe. A photo posted by the band on Twitter shows the foursome dressed in metallic army uniforms, accompanied by neon gas masks and helmets with antlers attached. Ahead of their stage show this weekend at Berlin's (more)...

Well, isn’t that funny? A greatest-hits collection from a band with no hits. If Dexys Midnight Runners can have a best-of album, then anyone can, but that still doesn’t make this collection of previously released songs from Danish epic-rock outfit Mew any less perplexing. Before even putting Eggs Are Funny on, the questions start flying: Is this some sort of contractual obligation? Isn’t it safe to assume that everyone who wants these songs already has them in one form or another? But once the hand-wringing is over, the triumphant, otherworldly pop kicks in, with Jonas Bjerre singing ...

Essential Sounds (2010/05/20)
Welcome once again to your fresh supply of all things fantastic. I have, as always, spent the past week looking in every nook and cranny for the best new music the world has to offer just for you. On the menu this week we have a collective mix spanning from the depths of Denmark to the underground dancefloors of New York. So what are you waiting for? Dig in and bon appetite!
1. “Back To The Fuck Yeah” by Pulled Apart By Horses
Hailing from my former stomping ground here in the UK, Pulled Apart By Horses are a fairly fresh faced alt rock group coming straight out of Leeds. Having only been together as a band since 2008 they are still defining their sound but if this number is anything to go by we should be hearing a lot more from them in the near future. There’s a...

What do you get when you combine Coldplay bassist Guy Berryman, Magne Furuholmen from a-ha, Jonas Bjerre from Mew and producer Martin Terefe? Why, a new supergroup with a Swedish name, of course. Apparatjik, which is a Swedish term for people who create bottlenecks in otherwise efficient organizations (!), first formed to provide music for a BBC show called Amazon Tribe: Songs for Survival (!!!)....

Denmark's Mew brought their energized space pop to Los Angeles' famed Troubadour last night where the packed-to-capacity room was mesmerized by the Scandinavian prog rockers' animated music and visuals. Ripping through songs from their new album No More Stories... and its predecessor And The Glass Handed Kites, Mew navigated fourteen surreal soundscapes with perfection while nightmarish animations were projected on the screen behind them. Jonas Bjerre's stunning voice captained the music's adventurous melodies and difficult time signatures, and applying his flawless falsettos (no pitch correction here), he jumped between octaves as easily as if he was using his speaking voice. Meanwhile, Bo Madsen's Venusian guitar work and drummer Silas Utke Graae Jorgensen's monster robot beats supplied the crowd with something equally transcendental. Some of L.A.'s indie scene was seen (like Opus Dai, Woven, Helen Earth, That Noise, H Is Orange,...

Danish alt-rockers return with dark, spacious opus grounded by danceable beats.
According to the unellipted 23-word title of Mew’s fourth studio album, stories are no longer told because “they washed away.” This explanation proves true, as blissful waves of synth atmospherics—compounded by Jonas Bjerre’s ethereal vocals—render the album’s awkward lyrics largely unintelligible. “New Terrain” unfolds in endless layers with Bjerre’s soprano, creating a haunting loop of echoes over late-blooming arena-rock guitar—it’s the perfect opener to yet another album of songs that rarely end where they begin.

It’s a mystery how Mew was able to convince a major label to sign it, but it’s good to know that the Danish outfit hasn’t straightened out its wonderfully tangled pop songs on its third big-league record (and fifth overall). Though frontman Jonas Bjerre promised a more upbeat album than Mew’s previous masterpiece, And The Glass Handed Kites, the new disc’s massive title, No More Stories Are Told Today / I’m Sorry / They Washed Away // No More Stories / The World Is Grey / I’m Tired / Let’s Wash Away (which comes from the lyrics to ...

The award-winning Danish band Mew is one of the latest Scandinavian indie ensembles to make a go of it in the States, and its new video "Introducing Palace Players" debuts today. The group features singer Jonas Bjerre, guitarist Bo Madsen, and drummer Silas Utke Graae Jorgensen, friends since the seventh grade whose recordings reflect the close relationship of its members. Though Mew was inspired by the Pixies, My Bloody Valentine, and Dinosaur, Jr., their new album, No More Stories, enhances those darker colors with brighter, melodic pop elements. The album's tracks are framed mainly in prog-ish settings, its lyrics not a mandatory read since the Mew experience is about its music, not its mewsings. The best tracks, like "Hawaii" (from which the album's title is derived), the slight rocker "Repeaterbeater," the wild ballad "Sometimes Life Isn't Easy," and its current...

Blue Foundation is a project Tobias originally started up with his brother. With the help of friends Kirstine Stubbe Teglbjaerg (vocalist for "Eyes on Fire") and Tatsuki Oshima for the first album, Tobias has found inspiration in enlisting assistance from various favorite musicians in his additional two records. The underground song, “Eyes on Fire,” was an unlikely overnight success and has, to date, garnered nearly nine million hits on their MySpace page. Tobias gave me some intimate information about the origination of "Eyes on Fire," revealing that it was not written for the soundtrack, rather has more humble beginnings: It really seems like the song was written for the movie, but it had not. It was written a year before in a cold, dark December night in Copenhagen in a very old and trashy house where I used to have my studio by Kirstine and me. I think the music and lyrics speak for itself,...
