The upcoming reimagining of “The Crow,” starring Bill Skarsgård, has officially received an R-rating from the Motion Picture Association (MPA), with warnings that suggest a more intense and graphic experience than the 1994 original starring Brandon Lee.
According to FilmRatings.com, the 2024 version of “The Crow” has been rated R for “strong bloody violence, gore, language, sexuality/nudity, and drug use.” This rating appears to be more explicit than the 1994 film, which received its R-rating for “a great amount of strong violence and language, and for drug use and some sexuality.”
The increased intensity of the rating has sparked discussions among fans and critics alike. While some view this as a positive sign that the remake is staying true to the dark, gritty tone of the source material, others remain skeptical about the need for a reimagining of the cult classic.

Let’s dream the crow black dream. I’m Niki Minter and this week on the Eric Draven files, we have The Crow: Stairway to Heaven. This is the first time we have a series that I feel lukewarm about. However, this is one that does have its fans and there’s a reason, aside from the upcoming reimagining, that we’re discussing it. This should be a fun time.
Okay, so, I caught Stairway on the Sci-Fi channel a few times here and there during its initial run. It caught my interest but never enough to start it from the beginning. What’s interesting about this is that it’s based on the 1994 movie adaptation which was pulled from James O’Barr’s original comic. Mark Dacascos would be the one and only person ever to fill the role once held by Brandon Lee. This is an interesting take, right?...

“The Crow” is a new live-action, $50 million budgeted superhero feature, directed by Rupert Sanders, based on the 1989 limited comic book series by James O'Barr, starring Bill Skarsgård as ‘Eric Draven’/ ‘The Crow’, who is resurrected to avenge the deaths of himself and his fiancée (FKA Twigs), releasing August 23, 2024 in theaters:
“…’Eric’ and his fiancée ‘Shelly’, are attacked by a gang of street thugs after their car breaks down. Eric is shot in the head and is paralyzed, and can only watch as Shelly is killed. They are then left for dead on the side of the road. Eric later dies in a hospital operating room while Shelly is Doa.
“Eric is somehow resurrected by a crow and seeks vengeance on the murderers, methodically stalking and killing them. When not on the hunt, Eric stays in the house he shared with Shelly, spending most of his time there, lost in memories of her.

While it wouldn't exactly be accurate to say that Lionsgate's upcoming reboot of The Crow is highly-anticipated, there is a certain amount of curiosity surrounding the movie, and fans are interested to see more.
Now, possibly in anticipation of a second trailer, Lionsgate has shared a brief new promo. The teaser is only a few seconds long, but it does give us another look at Eric Draven (Bill Skarsgård) brutally dispatching some bad guys.
During a recent interview with Screen Rant, Wonder Woman actor Danny Huston - who will play, you guessed it, the villain in The Crow - assured fans that this movie will not seek to "imitate" the original.
"Yeah, in a way, you don't want to really remake things that are good, you want to kind of leave them alone, because they're good. Why remake them? But having said that, they're also an inspiration, and as...

It's probably fair to say that there hasn't been a lot of positivity surrounding Lionsgate's upcoming reboot of The Crow.
Fans of the '90s film starring Brandon Lee weren't exactly enthusiastic about the prospect of a new take on James O'Barr's acclaimed graphic novel before the first trailer and stills dropped, and the backlash only intensified when we got a first look at Bill Skarsgård in action as Eric Draven.
Now, a first reaction to the movie has been shared online by Warrior writer Cliff Dorfman, who actually tagged the studio after catching an early screening. Dorfman clearly thought better of it and deleted the post shortly after, but not quickly enough!
"If hypothetically, one happened to see a screening of @TheCrow_Movie #thecrow which @Lionsgate is releasing in August, one might say, it’s horrible, it’s unwatchable, don’t waste your money, or can’t...

It’s been a long time coming, but a reboot of the 1994 cult classic film The Crow (which was based on the comic book series created by James O’Barr) will finally be making its way out into the world on August 23rd, which is when Lionsgate will be giving the film a theatrical release. With that release date swiftly approaching, we figured we should gather together all the information we have on this movie… and here it is, Everything We Know About The Crow 2024:
Not A Remake
Lionsgate has informed us that this new version of The Crow, which we have previously been referring to as a remake, is not to be called a remake. Rather, the film is to be referred to as “a new adaptation of the comic book.” They have also revealed that the tragic characters at the heart of the story are not named Eric Draven and Shelly Webster,...

The Crow: Brandon Lee’s stand-in Chad Stahelski supports the casting of Bill Skarsgard in the remake
Stuntman Chad Stahelski was close friends with actor Brandon Lee… and when Lee was killed in a tragic accident on the set of the 1994 version of The Crow, director Alex Proyas chose Stahelski to be Lee’s stand-in for the filming of scenes that still needed to be filmed involving Lee’s character Eric Draven. Lee’s face was then placed over Stahelski’s in post-production. Stahelski has gone on to become a director, taking the helm of each film in the John Wick franchise to date… and since he worked with Bill Skarsgard on John Wick: Chapter 4, it’s no surprise to hear that he supports the casting of Skarsgard in The Crow remake, which is set to reach theatres on August 23rd.
Commenting on Skarsgard’s performance in John Wick: Chapter 4, Stahelski told Esquire, “I think he’s my best villain ever.” As for his casting in The Crow,...

Bill Skarsgård, known for enticing viewers with his chilling performance in It, continued to exhibit his remarkable versatility with a recent string of compelling roles. In 2022, he enthralled us as Keith in Zach Cregger’s Barbarian and seamlessly stepped into the shoes of a villain in Chad Stahelski’s John Wick: Chapter 4.
With a mastery that thrills, the actor, 33, then carried the action-packed narrative in Moritz Mohr’s Boy Kills World. Now, Skarsgård is set to dazzle us once again as he embodies the enigmatic Count Orlok in Robert Eggers’ highly anticipated gothic horror, Nosferatu. This is not all; the actor will soon grace our screens as the iconic antihero in the upcoming reboot of The Crow, releasing in a couple of months.

Bill Skarsgård has established himself in Hollywood by playing sinister characters, but he'll take a crack at the anti-hero when The Crow is released later this summer.
The first images and trailer for the remake received a mixed-to-negative response from fans of the classic 1994 movie. Most of that boiled down to Skarsgård's Eric Draven looking more like Jared Leto's Joker in 2016's Suicide Squad than Brandon Lee's iconic interpretation of the comic book character.
Talking to Esquire (via FearHQ.com), the actor admits to being unsure about taking on The Crow's title role. "There's definitely worry about that," he says of fan expectations. "I'm trying to view the fame aspect as a challenge and navigate through it in a way that I’ll find happiness."
"I really don't think my line of profession is a recipe for happiness or contentment. Not a lot of us are happy.

The very idea of a new version of The Crow sparked plenty of outrage online, with fans of the Brandon Lee original saying no one could possibly replace him. Things only got worse when images of Bill Skarsgård as Eric Draven dropped, prompting negative responses from fans and even the original’s director, Alex Proyas. As we await The Crow’s August release, Skarsgård himself has his own thoughts on the movie…and they’re not exactly positive, either.
In a new profile in Esquire, Bill Skarsgård said that the ending of The Crow is far from satisfying, declaring, “I personally preferred something more definitive.” This would suggest that Rupert Sanders’ movie teases something more open-ended, quite possibly attempting to set up a sequel to fully reboot the franchise. Did Sanders not see the other Crow movies…?

The soundtrack to The Crow showed up in stores two months before the actual movie played in multiplexes. That should give you an idea of how popular soundtracks were back in the day.
During the ‘90s, soundtracks were usually vital to whatever big-screen attraction was hitting theaters at the time.

The Crow: Bill Skarsgård's Eric Draven Is Ready For A Fight In New Still From Rupert Sanders' Remake
Created by James O'Barr as a means of dealing with the death of his fiancée at the hands of a drunk driver, The Crow #1 was released in 1989 and became an instant classic. A big screen adaptation starring the late Brandon Lee followed in 1994 and it too is beloved.
As a result, the odds are already stacked against this summer's remake. Ghost in the Shell director Rupert Sanders is at the helm, while John Wick: Chapter 4 star Bill Skarsgård takes on the role of Eric Draven.
The response to the first trailer wasn't overly positive and the movie's take on the title character - which has replaced the iconic makeup with Joker-style face tattoos - has been similarly divisive. So, yeah, we expect The Crow to struggle when it swoops into theaters in August.
Now, we have a new look at Skarsgård's transformation and it looks like Eric is ready for a fight.

The original 1994 adaptation of The Crow still has a huge, loyal following, so there was already a certain amount of scepticism surrounding Lionsgate's decision to develop a reboot. When the first trailer was released, that apprehension turned to outright disgust for a lot of fans.
Are people being a little quick to judge based off a single teaser? Perhaps, but for many, Brandon Lee will always be the only Eric Draven, and that's all there is to it.
Total Film interviewed Ghostbusters star Ernie Hudson, who played heroic cop Sergeant Daryl Albrecht in The Crow, for the Goth classic's 30th anniversary, and the actor admitted that he's only recently been able to revisit the film due to the tragic accident that ended Lee's life during filming.

It can’t rain all the time…Even less frequent are 30th anniversary celebrations. But this month, Cinemark will be honoring one of the best films of 1994 — which is really saying something — by releasing The Crow back into theaters for a special engagement.

We don’t know when that trailer is going to be making its way online, but JoBlo’s own Lance Vlcek was in attendance and reports that the new trailer reveals more about the film’s story.
Writing from the panel, Lance said attendees were told this version of The Crow is “a complete re-imagining that is not meant to compete with the original. The vengeful spirit Eric Draven first appeared in James O'Barr's indie comic "The Crow" in 1989. He became a Goth household name in 1994 thanks to the popularity of Alex Proyas' ultra-stylized, uber-Noir film adaptation starring Brandon Lee, who was infamously killed on the set of "The Crow" thanks to a misfiring prop gun. The teens of 1994 venerated the film, and "The Crow" was deeply beloved by many. The film warranted several sequels, including "The Crow: City of Angels" in 1994, "The Crow: Salvation" in 2000, and "The Crow: Wicked Prayer" in 2005. O'Barr's characters were also featured in the 1998 TV series "The Crow: Stairway to Heaven."

Lionsgate is playing a little release date shuffle today as Deadline reports that the studio has made a few changes to the schedule. First off, the release of the upcoming reboot of The Crow has been pushed from June 7th to August 23rd, which sees it getting out of the way of Bad Boys: Ride or Die.
In addition to bumping back The Crow, Lionsgate and Twisted Pictures have also pushed back the release of Saw XI by a full year. The eleventh installment of the horror franchise was originally slated to hit theaters on September 27th, but the film will now debut on September 26, 2025. After playing Pennywise and before playing Nosferatu and Eric Draven, Bill Skarsgård takes on the role of a deaf-mute action hero in Boy Kills World, a one-of-a-kind action spectacle set in a dystopian fever dream reality. After years of being stuck in development hell, "The Crow" remake is finally coming to theaters this summer. It stars Bill Skarsgard ("It") as Eric Draven, the role made famous by the late Brandon Lee in director Alex Proyas' 1994 comic book film of the same name. The reaction to the recently released trailer and images has been mixed, to put it mildly. Now, Proyas himself has weighed in, and the forthcoming remake does not sit well with him.
Proyas took to Facebook recently to share some of his thoughts on this new version of "The Crow," which was directed by Rupert Sanders ("Snow White and the Huntsman"). Proyas, for his part, didn't have anything nice to say, as he even linked to an article from Comic Book Resources titled "The Crow Remake Trailer Gets Staggering Amount of Dislikes on YouTube." Directed by Rupert Sanders and starring Bill Skarsgård, the reboot of the 1994 film, The Crow has become one of the hot topics of discussion. Based on James O’Barr’s comic book series of the same name, the film is the remake of the 1994 film, which featured Brandon Lee in the lead role. While the film was a box office hit and has since gained a cult following, the actor tragically lost his life during production due to a fatal incident involving a prop gun.

Criticism has been directed at the remake by original cast members and director Alex Proyas, who argue that it risks tarnishing Lee’s legacy. However, filmmaker Rupert Sanders has defended the project, asserting that it aims to pay tribute to Lee and expressing hope that the revival would do justice to his memory.

This June, a long-gestating remake of the 1994 Brandon Lee comic book film “The Crow” will finally be released following various false starts over the years with versions meant to star actors like Jack Huston and Jason Momoa. The Rupert Sanders-directed (“Ghost In The Shell”) version stars rising actor Bill Skarsgård (the spitting image of the original artwork from James O’Barr’s comic book) as a new take on the undead vigilante Eric Draven.

Alex Proyas, who directed the original version of The Crow in 1994 is not a fan of the idea remaking the film, the new version of which will be released on June 7.
Proyas’ reservations, he says, stem not from some sense of proprietorship, but from fidelity to the original film’s star, Brandon Lee, who died when a gun malfunctioned during production.
“I really don’t get any joy from seeing negativity about any fellow filmmakers work,” wrote Proyas in a post online. “And I’m certain the cast and crew really had all good intentions, as we all do on any film. So it pains me to say any more on this topic, but I think the fan’s response speaks volumes. [‘The Crow’] is not just a movie. Brandon Lee died making it, and it was finished as a testament to his lost brilliance and tragic loss. It is his legacy.

The first trailer for the remake of The Crow was finally released last week, and although it had its fans, it generated quite a lot of backlash. Original “The Crow” filmmaker Alex Proyas is voicing his feelings about the cult film’s long-gestating remake, helmed by Rupert Sanders. Proyas directed the 1994 original film based on the graphic novel about a man who returns from the dead to take revenge on the person who murdered him and his fiancée.
Twenty-eight year old actor Brandon Lee, the son of martial artist Bruce Lee, was killed on set during the final days of production when a prop gun fired during the making of Proyas’ film. Now, after various attempts at remakes over the past 30 years, “The Crow” is being rebooted with Bill Skarsgård playing the role of Eric Draven, as originated by Lee.
Proyas took to Facebook to share his reaction to the trailer for the upcoming Lionsgate feature, set for a June 7 release. (You can also see his posts below.)

‘The Crow’ – Original Director Alex Proyas Elaborates Further on His Distate for the Upcoming Remake
The director of original classic The Crow, Alex Proyas (Dark City) has made no secret of the fact that he’s not a fan of what he’s seen from the remake so far. Proyas has made it clear over the years that he’s never been in favor of the original movie being remade – he wrote a heartfelt post on Facebook back in 2017 explaining why he feels a remake is disrespectful to the late Brandon Lee’s memory and legacy – and he’s very much sticking to that opinion.
Taking to Facebook this morning, Proyas elaborated a bit further on some of his recent posts slamming the new take on The Crow, calling back to his aforementioned comments from 2017.

One could say that the reboot of The Crow (1994) was simply cursed. Going through ups and downs ever since its announcement, no one knew if the film would even come to fruition. However, after years and years of setbacks, the reboot will finally be released this year, albeit without Jason Momoa. Actor Jason Momoa was all set to play the lead in the reboot, which he stated was his dream role.

Unfortunately, due to some differences, Jason Momoa had to walk away from the character he had dreamed of playing for eight years. Not only did the actor say goodbye to the reboot, but director Corin Hardy, too, packed his bags and left. Taking to social media, both Jason Momoa and Corin Hardy put out their sides of the story.

The protagonist of the comic book-based The Crow saga, Eric Draven is one of the most iconic fictional antiheroes of all time. Created by James O’Barr back in 1989, he was initially played by the late Brandon Lee in the 1994 film of the same name, which became a massive cult classic.
Over the years, it spawned three more installments in the film series till 2005. But then the franchise was once again announced to be resurrected in 2008, and Jason Momoa became the final contender to play the lead in the remake by 2016.

After more than 15 years of development hell, the reimagining of “The Crow” will finally hit theaters this summer.
“The Crow” is based on the indie comic book series of the same name by James O’Barr that was originally published back in 1989 by Caliber Press. 30 years ago in 1994, a film adaptation of the comic book by visionary director Alex Proyas was released into theaters, perhaps better known as the movie where star Brandon Lee was accidentally shot and killed on set during the middle of production.
Miramax stepped in and spent $8 million to pick up where production left off and finish the film. “The Crow” went on to gross $93.7 million at the box office against its $23 million budget, and the film eventually became a cult classic. Three lackluster sequels and a television adaptation would follow, however the property had always been earmarked for what current distributor Lionsgate is calling a reimagining.
