Jazzmin Jiwa has over 15 years of experience in Journalism and Documentary Production in more than 10 countries.
Starting out in Print Journalism for newspapers in Surrey, England, before moving to broadcasting, she used the writing and news gathering skills she learned as a journalist and news editor to report across the globe for BBC World News, Reuters and China Central Television (CCTV).
She re-located from London to Nairobi, Kenya, to be based in the continent her family fled as refugees. Working from seven African countries, she produced and directed documentaries on sociopolitical topics and social injustice, two of which were nominated for Best TV Documentary at film festivals.
Going back to the continent of her ancestors uncovered the personal aspects of her passion for storytelling and honed her resilience to report in war torn and politically unstable regions. Her work documenting human suffering in Israel and Palestine covered the conflict in an in depth way under-reported by the mainstream news.
Previously, while working on a six-part documentary series about human trafficking for BBC World News, she gathered content including a raid on a child labor clothes factory in India and women trafficked from Tanzania to England for domestic servitude.
Her independent projects include producing/directing a short inspirational film about everyday Kenyan women for International Women's Day with an all-female crew.
Bringing together experience in both print and broadcast journalism, she co-founded the media-tech company Storytale, with two California-based software engineers. It aims to give a voice to one billion survivors of various experiences from around the world to encourage empathy across borders. This theme attracted more than 100,000 social media followers within six months.
