‘Madame Web’ was one of Ssu’s biggest box office flops in 2023, continuing the trend of poorly received films in the Universe. Despite this, the movie did achieve some level of success on Netflix. Following its disastrous theatrical release, many actors involved in the film largely remained silent.
However, Dakota Johnson faced backlash for her criticism of the studio and superhero movies in general. She specifically called out executive decisions and the reliance on numbers and algorithms in making such films.
You cannot make art based on numbers and algorithms. My feeling has been for a long time that audiences are extremely smart, and executives have started to believe that they’re not. Audiences will always be able to sniff out bullsht. Even if films start to be made with AI, humans aren’t going to fcking want to see those.

‘Madame Web’ was one of the biggest box office failures of 2023 for Ssu, continuing the tradition of Universe’s poorly received movies. However, it’s important to note that the movie did find some modicum of success on Netflix. In any case, following the disastrous release of the movie, most of the actors involved with it didn’t comment on it all that much.
However Dakota Johnson did land herself in hot water for criticism of the studio, and these types of superhero movies overall. Johnson criticized executive decisions and the fact that these types of movies are made on the basis of numbers and algorithms.

Russell Crowe is no stranger to comic book/superhero movies, having previously appeared in Man of Steel and Thor: Love and Thunder. He also has a role in Sony Pictures' upcoming Kraven the Hunter, and it seems the Academy Award-winner doesn't have much time for other actors who sign on for those type of films and then complain that they didn't reach a certain standard.
While chatting to GQ, Crowe was asked about his experience making superhero projects, specifically in light of Madame Web star Dakota Johnson saying she felt like the movie was art “made by a committee” in a recent interview.
"You cannot make art based on numbers and algorithms," said the actress. "My feeling has been for a long time that audiences are extremely smart, and executives have started to believe that they’re not. Audiences will always be able to sniff out bullsh*t. Even if...

Russell Crowe is acknowledging some of his missteps, and defending the superhero movie process in the wake of Dakota Johnson’s Madame Web comments.
The 60-year-old actor, who next appears in Sony’s latest Spider-Man Universe film Kraven the Hunter, gave a candid interview to GQ in which he seemed to address past reports of bad behavior.
“I’m in awe of people these days who say, ‘I have no regrets,'” Crowe said. “Really? Not one single thing you ever did. Right? You’re so fucking perfect. I’ve got a shit ton of regrets. An angry word, an overreaction, a missed opportunity for friendship — lots of things like that. But all of those things are in perspective, because I’ve done lots of really cool shit too. Russell Crowe has no problem calling out the hypocrisy of actors dissing their own superhero films.
The new trend as of late was most recently exemplified by Dakota Johnson’s comments on “Madame Web” after the Sony-produced film flopped at the box office. Johnson told Bustle that she understood why the film was “ripped to shreds” by critics, citing that “art does not do well when it’s made by committee.”
Crowe, when asked about how his own experience in a slew of superhero films compared to Johnson’s, told GQ UK that of course tentpole franchise films like “Thor: Love and Thunder” are made by a “gigantic machine” like Johnson complained about.
“I don’t want to make any comments to what anybody else might have said or what their experience is, but…you’re bringing out the impish quality of my humor,” Crowe said. “You’re telling...

Russell Crowe is no stranger to comic book movies. He played Superman’s biological father Jor-El in Zack Snyder’s “Man of Steel,” joined the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Zeus in “Thor: Love and Thunder” and soon will appear as Kraven’s estranged father in Sony’s “Kraven the Hunter.” So when British GQ recently asked the Oscar winner about his experience making superhero movies in light of Dakota Johnson saying “Madame Web” felt like art “made by a committee,” he playfully laughed off the idea that making such films is in any way deep.
“I don’t want to make any comments to what anybody else might have said or what their experience is, but… you’re bringing out the impish quality of my humor. [Laughs.] You’re telling me you signed up for a Marvel movie, and some fucking universe for cartoon characters… and you didn’t get enough pathos?...

Aaron Taylor-Johnson’s Kraven the Hunter is finally arriving in cinemas soon after several delays and uncertainties. Director J.C. Chandor once had a very interesting opinion about helming superhero movies that took a surprising turn years after.

Like other filmmakers, Chandor expressed his thoughts on the popularity of streaming platforms and the decline of the theater business. Interestingly, he thinks that Netflix will be bringing back the classic two-hour films in its library rather than focusing on series with several episodes.

Tom Hardy returns as Eddie Brock for one final time in this autumn’s Venom: The Last Dance. Here’s a new trailer.
Venom is one of the more off-beat and wayward franchises in the superhero genre, with Tom Hardy evidently relishing his dual role of scruffy journalist Eddie Brock and Venom, the alien symbiote that becomes his unlikely partner.
Six years on from the 2018 original and the 2021 sequel, Let There Be Carnage, Hardy reprises the role for the third (and seemingly final) time in this October’s Venom The Last Dance. And if you’ve been wondering whether or not it’ll continue the knowingly over-the-top style of the last two movies, then fear not: the trailer below sees Venom fighting a monster on the roof of a moving jumbo jet and, a bit later, possessing a horse.

Kraven the Hunter has been delayed several times already, but the release was pushed back yet again last month. The film is now set to hit theaters on December 13th. While speaking with Collider, Kraven the Hunter producer Matt Tolmach explained the reason behind the delay, saying it’s a sign of how highly Sony Pictures thinks of the film.
“Kraven moved to Christmas because we’re excited about it and Christmas is the best release period there is, when you get people with time to go back to the movies over and over again,” Tolmach said. “That was a real reflection of how the studio felt about the movie. We’re really excited. But that’s a great move that reflects just the feeling about the movie.“

When the first trailer for Kraven the Hunter was released last summer, the response from fans wasn't particularly positive. Some embraced the over-the-top violence, but the majority of comic book readers recoiled as soon as a mutated Rhino showed up.
The Sony Pictures movie has been delayed multiple times, with it most recently moving from the end of August to December 13, later this year.
That means it will go head-to-head with The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim and, just a week later, faces stiff competition from Sonic the Hedgehog 3 and Mufasa: The Lion King. On August 30, it had no real competitors.
Despite that, longtime Sony's Universe of Marvel Characters producer Matt Tolmach tells Collider the move isn't because Sony has given up on Kraven the Hunter; they believe it stands a chance of becoming a Christmastime hit.

Tom Rothman, the Sony Motion Pictures Group chairman and CEO, wined and dined a select few at a splendidly swish soirée Friday at Mamo Michelangelo in Antibes, hosted by Charles Finch as part of his annual Filmmakers Dinner honoring 100 years of Columbia Pictures, and there was something he said about why movies matter that has stuck with me.
Hours earlier, Rothman had introduced a gloriously restored print of Charles Vidor’s 1946 movie Gilda, starring Rita Hayworth as the eponymous nightclub temptress and Glenn Ford as the hardboiled gambler from her past.

Sony’s Kraven the Hunter was supposed to be 2024’s second Spider-Man-adjacent film. However, the studio is trying to put as much space between it and Madam Web as possible. Kraven is just barely staying in the calendar year.
The Hollywood Reporter is reporting that the live-action adaptation of the comic book villain, starring Aaron Taylor-Johnson, has been moved from August 30 to December 13. The Karate Kid previously held this date. Sony has since moved that reboot to May 30, 2025.
Karven the Hunter isn’t being moved due to production delays; it has been ready to go for a while. The latest Spidey adversary flick was initially slated to debut last October. Sony decided against this since the actor’s strike would have left the movie without a cast to talk it up in the press.

Looks like a shake-up is happening in Culver City. After initially announcing release dates for “Kraven the Hunter” and “Karate Kid” during the 2024 Summer and Christmas seasons, Sony has decided to delay both films and swap their seasonal positions.
The upcoming “Karate Kid” movie, which sees Ralph Macchio and Jackie Chan reprising their roles from various iterations of the franchise, was originally slated to hit theaters on December 13, 2024. The film will now open six months later on May 30, 2025. A source close to the project told IndieWire that the move will allow the final season of the Macchio-led series “Cobra Kai” to conclude before the film hits theaters. The new positioning also allows the family-friendly film to target a wider audience during summer vacation for many K-12 students.

It used to be said that every movie, no matter how badly it did at the box office or critically, went to heaven. Heaven, of course, meant physical media. First, it was VHS, then it was Laserdisc, then DVD, Blu-ray, and now 4K Blu-rays; every movie would get some kind of physical media release. After all, rentals and sales were important to a film’s profitability. In fact, some movies that tanked theatrically did so well on DVD that they became perennials, such as Donnie Darko or The Transporter, with the DVD sales of that movie directly influencing the studio to greenlight a sequel and give Jason Statham a legit career as an action star. Yet, despite physical media making a comeback, it’s worth noting that some of the most popular movies in recent memory have never gotten a physical media release. And we’re not only talking about...

Sony returns to their own Marvel universe with the upcoming Kraven the Hunter, which has been bumped all over the release schedule. This week, it’s been bumped once more.

Kraven the Hunter will be the very first Marvel movie from Sony to be released into theaters with an “R” rating, with lots of bloody violence being promised.
Aaron Taylor-Johnson stars as the title character, Marvel’s ultimate predator.

Sony Pictures is playing a little release date shuffle this Friday evening. Kraven the Hunter, the upcoming Spider-Man spin-off starring Aaron Taylor-Johnson, was originally slated to hit theaters on August 30th, but the film has now been pushed back to a December 13th release. Kraven the Hunter‘s fresh release date was already occupied by the new Karate Kid movie, which has now been bumped to May 30, 2025.
Kraven the Hunter has been delayed several times already, but hopefully, this will be the last move. Coming on the heels of the less-than-impressive debuts of Morbius and Madame Web, this Spider-Man spin-off has a lot to prove, but with an R-rated edge, it could just turn the tide. Director J.C. Chandor has previously described the movie as a tragedy. “Sony probably doesn’t want me to lead with this. but the story is a tragedy,” Chandor said last summer. “When the final credits roll on this film,...

Kraven the Hunter is seeking new hunting grounds, with the Aaron Taylor-Johnson starrer taking a release date just vacated by The Karate Kid.
On Friday evening, Sony moved the villain-centric Kraven the Hunter to the prime winter spot of Dec. 13, 2024 (back from Aug. 30, 2024). Kraven steps into a date that was occupied by fellow Sony pic The Karate Kid, a crossover event movie starring Ralph Macchio and Jackie Chan. Karate Kid now moves to May 30, 2025.
The move comes after the sixth and final season of Cobra Kai, the Netflix spinoff starring Machio as his original Karate Kid movie character Daniel Larusso, was delayed due to last year’s actors strike. Sony pushed the new Karate Kid to allow it to follow Cobra Kai‘s final season, with the summer date also seen as friendly for the all-ages audience its intended for. Sony Pictures has pushed Karate Kid from December to May 2025 and pushed back Kraven The Hunter to fill the holiday season slot.
Karate Kid had been scheduled to open on December 13 of this year and according to sources is being held back in order to follow the sixth and final season of Cobrai Kai, which was delayed due to the strikes.

[Editor’s note: Spoilers for “Ripley” below.]
The turning point for “Ripley,” Steven Zaillian’s limited Netflix series re-imagining of Patricia Highsmith’s crime novel, “The Talented Mr. Ripley,” occurs in Episode 3 (“Sommerso”), when grifter Tom Ripley (Andrew Scott) murders Dickie (Johnny Flynn) in a boat in Sanremo. But the grifter discovers that murder is a filthy business in a bravura 20-minute sequence, in which he has difficulty disposing of Dickie’s body, and we observe every arduous moment in close to real-time.
This protracted view of Tom’s twisted mind in action is made even more menacing in black-and-white (shot by “There Will Be Blood” Oscar winner Robert Elswit). After learning that his grift has come to a sudden end, Tom grabs the oar and beats Dickie to death. But then everything goes wrong.

Rolling Stone UK’s latest cover features Aaron Taylor-Johnson, 33, who is set to have a busy final few months in 2024. In addition to playing the lead in Sony’s superhero film Kraven the Hunter (opening in theaters on August 30), he will be joining Bill Skarsgård in the horror movie Nosferatu, helmed by Robert Eggers (releasing on December 25).
Oh, did we mention he also has a supporting role in David Leitch’s flick The Fall Guy, which will arrive on May 3? Recently, the actor has been in the news for his fervent promotion of the upcoming Sony project, Kraven the Hunter. Exclusive: Alessandro Nivola has joined Julianne Moore and Tilda Swinton in The Room Next Door, the first English-language film from Oscar-winning Spanish filmmaker Pedro Almodóvar. Sony Pictures Classics will distribute and John Turturro is also on board.
Almodóvar’s El Deseo is producing.
The Room Next Door will be Almodóvar’s first feature-length project since 2021’s Parallel Mothers, which debuted at the Venice Film Festival. The film starred Penélope Cruz — who won the Best Actress prize at Venice — and Milena Smit as single mothers who became pregnant by accident and meet in a hospital room as they are about to give birth.
Nivola will next be seen starring in the Apple TV+ limited series The Big Cigar playing radical chic Hollywood film producer Bert Schneider in the crazier-than-fiction story about Schneider’s complicated friendship with Black Panther leader Huey P. In 2011, it might have seemed like Jessica Chastain emerged out of nowhere as a formidable actress, when she appeared in no less than five movies — including Best Picture nominees “The Help” and “The Tree of Life” — and scored her first-ever Oscar nomination. But Chastain worked for years to get to that point, acting in plays from a young age and attending the prestigious Juilliard School. “I struggled for so long to try to create a career,” she told the New York Times in 2017.
In the decade since her breakout year, Chastain has received acclaim for a variety of different roles — from her Oscar-nominated lead part in “Zero Dark Thirty” to her lauded supporting work in “A Most Violent Year” to even a superhero franchise with “X-Men: Dark Phoenix.” She’s worked alongside top filmmakers like Terrence Malick, Kathryn Bigelow, J.C. Chandor, Aaron Sorkin, Christopher Nolan and Ridley Scott.

It’s a big year for Sony’s Spider-Man-adjacent comic book universe. The year started with Madame Web connecting them all – and this summer, we’ll see Aaron Taylor-Johnson make his debut as the title character of J.C. Chandor’s Kraven The Hunter. And beyond that, there’s a third film to come from the ‘Spumc’ (as it was once known) in 2024 – Tom Hardy’s third outing as Venom. Now, some fresh details have emerged about what’s in store.
The film has received the official title Venom: The Last Dance – a title that indicates a possible trilogy-capping final chapter. Or, perhaps, a Magic Mike-esque bout of male stripping. Perhaps even both. The film – both written and directed by Kelly Marcel, who co-wrote on Venom and Venom: Let There Be Carnage – also has a new release date, set to hit screens on 25 October. Netflix is bringing 1974 back to theaters thanks to rare archival prints, restorations, and select 35mm screenings of the curated “Milestone Movies” streaming collection.
The streaming platform debuts a slew of classic films across its trio of theaters in Los Angeles and New York City. The rarely screened archival prints for Martin Scorsese’s “Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore” and John Cassavetes’ “A Woman Under the Influence” are among the selected titles, as well as the premiere of the Dcp restoration of iconic Blaxploitation film “Foxy Brown” starring Pam Grier.

Francis Ford Coppola‘s 1974 masterpiece “The Conversation” will be remade as a TV series, with “Margin Call” and “All Is Lost” filmmaker J.C. Chandor attached to both write and direct the series, IndieWire has confirmed.
Chandor will direct via his CounterNarrative Films banner alongside Temple Hill, producer Adam Fishbach, and executive produced by Coppola’s American Zoetrope. Erin Levy, known for her work on “Mad Men” and “Mindhunter,” will be the showrunner on “The Conversation” remake.
MRC is the studio behind the series, and the company optioned the TV remake rights directly from the Coppola estate.
Despite a rumor that Aubrey Plaza was attached to star, no cast is involved at this stage, as a source close to the project tells IndieWire. Other media reports suggested it would be a limited series and that it was set up at a network, but it is being envisioned as an ongoing series,...

Updated: “The Offer,” Paramount’s limited series about the making of Francis Ford Coppola’s “The Godfather,” came and went in 2022 to barely any fanfare. But instead of another making-of series, Indiewire confirms reports that MRC, the studio behind the series, wants to do a series remake of Francis Ford Coppola’s “The Conversation.” What’s more, there’s a director attached, J.C.

In a year of reduced Marvel output, there are still a lot of interesting comic book adaptations emerging in 2024 from both Sony and Marvel Studios. As it stands, Deadpool 3 is the only MCU film releasing in theaters this year, but the Sony side of Marvel has three movies heading to multiplexes, including Kraven the Hunter, which was previously set to make its debut in 2023.
MCU series Echo has already hit Disney+ in January, but here’s what you can expect to arrive in the rest of 2024.
Madame Web – February 14
The webs will be madaming extremely hard in 2024 as Sony returns to the Spider-Man-adjacent well to pluck out the first of two new gems. Will they be sparkly, box office-friendly Venom diamonds? Or will they be cubic zirconia Morbiuses? Only time will tell, but the first trailer for February’s Madame Web was leaning heavily towards Morbius, inspiring reams of...

Charlie Hunnam could be heading back into enemy territory for Triple Frontier 2, a sequel to the J.C. Chandor-directed action thriller. In 2019’s Triple Frontier, loyalties are tested when five friends and former special forces operatives reunite to take down a South American drug lord, unleashing unintended consequences. According to Hunnam, he’s producing another Triple Frontier movie, though the project is in its early stage of development.
Speaking with The Mary Sue at a Rebel Moon: Part One – A Child of Fire press event, Hunnam revealed his intentions for a potential sequel, saying the project is in its “absolute infancy.” Hunnam added, “Nothing guaranteed, but I just set up recently as the main producer on a potential sequel to Triple Frontier at Netflix.”

It’s difficult to quantify the viewership numbers for streaming films. All we really get are first-party numbers from the streamers directly, which are always used in a complimentary way. Basically, no streamer is going to admit a film horrifically bombed. That said, it’s clear when a streaming film isn’t a monumental cultural moment, as was the case with the 2019 film, “Triple Frontier.” Though it had solid viewership numbers, per Netflix, the action film wasn’t a runaway hit like “Extraction,” for example.

Have you seen "Triple Frontier"? In case you haven't watched this action-adventure on Netflix yet, now is the time! Released in 2019, "Triple Frontier" received mostly positive reviews from critics, who deemed it special enough to stand out in the oversaturated heist/thriller genre, despite sporting an uneven tone. So, why is this film suddenly making a resurgence 4 years later? This might have to do with the fact that the film stars the likes of Pedro Pascal, Ben Affleck, and Oscar Isaac — with anticipation surrounding Pascal's return in shows like "The Mandalorian" and "The Last of Us," coupled with the announcement that he's in the run to play Reed Richards in the upcoming "Fantastic Four." "Triple Frontier" has recently found a place in Netflix's Global Top 10 list.

It's possible that the 20th Century Fox-financed "X-Men" is the most important superhero movie ever made. There were hit folks-in-spandex flicks prior to Bryan Singer's 2000 blockbuster, but, even with movies like Richard Donner's "Superman" and Tim Burton's "Batman," you could sense a lack of traction. Studios didn't know how to franchise comic book movies back then because the executives didn't read or get comic books.
Singer's film changed this. Stephen Norrington's surprise 1998 hit "Blade" was the Marvel geek aperitif, but "X-Men" was, for Gen-x comic book readers, the realization of a lifelong dream. We never thought we'd get a big-screen adaptation of Marvel Comics' uncanny characters, but the time was right for Professor Xavier's School for Gifted Youngsters. The advances in computer-generated visual effects allowed Singer to make -- on a smallish budget given the film's tentpole ambitions -- a vibrant comic book movie...

The list of directors who put their trust in Robby Müller could constitute a nice history of post-war cinema. A retrospective of films on which he served as Dp reflects accordingly––so’s the case with Metrograph’s “Robby Müller: Remain in Light,” which starts on Friday, September 29, and for which we’re glad to debut the trailer.
Contained therein are bits and pieces of what Metrograph attendees can anticipate. The series will offer a chance to see (among others) 24 Hour Party People, Alice in the Cities, The American Friend, Barfly, Breaking the Waves, Dead Man, Down by Law, Ghost Dog: Way of the Samurai, Kings of the Road, Korczak, Living the Light – Robby Müller, Mystery Train, Repo Man, Saint Jack, To Live and Die in L.A., When Pigs Fly, The Wrong Move, and Paris, Texas. Sony Pictures’ “Dumb Money” could be the most frightening horror movie this year, and the Oscars would be smart to embrace it. From the critically acclaimed director Craig Gillespie, his smart and at times tragic look at the GameStop stock story of 2021 entertained the audiences of the Toronto Film Festival on Friday night where it held its world premiere.
TIFF CEO Cameron Bailey introduced the film and Gillespie brought up his fellow producers Aaron Ryder and Teddy Schwarzman, along with EPs and writers Lauren Schuker Blum and Rebecca Angelo, who sported the film’s title on each of their purses.

Jessica Chastain has been waiting years for a sequel to “A Most Violent Year.”
The Oscar winner and Emmy-nominated “George and Tammy” star revealed during Entertainment Weekly’s Awardist podcast that she is hoping to revisit the 2014 crime drama written and directed by J.C. Chandor. Chastain starred as Anna Morales, the wife of trucking company owner Abel Morales, played by Oscar Isaac, who combats local corruption in 1981 New York City.
“Here’s the reality, and we’ll see if this ever happens, because this is a script I’m waiting to get written. Aaron Taylor-Johnson was recently profiled in Esquire, where the star talks about his upcoming film, Kraven the Hunter, along with the director J.C. Chandor. Chandor would speak about Kraven being more of a tragedy than a standard comic book film, “Sony probably doesn’t want me to lead with this. but the story is a tragedy. When the final credits roll on this film, if you’ve been paying attention, you won’t have the feeling that this is all going to end great.” Taylor-Johnson is no stranger to the Marvel universe or even the comic book universe as a whole. Prior to Avengers: Age of Ultron, his role in Kick-Ass, which was based on a graphic novel, brought all kinds of big franchise offers his way.

Aaron Taylor-Johnson has been a favourite to take over the role of James Bond, reportedly even meeting with franchise producer Barbara Broccoli, but he naturally can’t confirm or deny any of the rumours.
While speaking with Vanity Fair, Aaron Taylor-Johnson dodged yet another question regarding James Bond. “As I’ve already told you, I have to go by the beat of my own drum,” Taylor-Johnson said. “It’s my own path, what feels intuitive to me. I’ve never made a decision based on other people’s perspectives, or their judgments, or their expectations. You lose your f**king mind if you do that. Your sense of worth and soul is gone. You need to understand what is integral to you and what feels right, and you’ve got to stay on track with what’s present in front of you. Kraven is what’s in front of me.
