Facebook says it is investing $100M to support news reporting during the coronavirus pandemic.
The social media giant is putting up a $25M emergency relief fund for local news through its Facebook Journalism Project, and is placing a further $75M in additional marketing spend with news organizations around the world.
Campbell Brown, the company’s VP Global News Partnerships, announced the news in an online post.
“Through the Covid-19 Community Network grant program, direct funding is helping journalists cover important stories when we all need them most,” she wrote. “We’re building on this work and will direct a portion of these funds to publishers most in need in the hardest hit countries.

Facebook has launched tests of a “News” tab, which aims to limit the flow of phony stories populating the platform, declaring the ambitious initiative an effort to “strengthen democracy.”
The tab will not disrupt the normal functioning of the News Feed or items that appear therein, but it will aim to give users more tools that control the news items they view. Based on a survey of more than 100,000 users earlier this year, Facebook decided to manually override the artificial intelligence and algorithmic tools that serve up certain items to users. The computerized methods will still be in play, but will be supplemented by selections by a team of professional journalists.
The survey determined that the social network was under-serving stories on health, business, entertainment and sports. It will source items from four categories of publishers: general, topical, diverse and local news, implementing new methods of verifying the legitimacy of the publishers.

The heads of Facebook’s entertainment-programming initiative defended the company’s standards for video and other content Wednesday at the Television Critics Association’s summer press tour.
VP of product Fidji Simo and head of global creative strategy Ricky Van Veen were on hand to discuss the original entertainment programming being developed for Facebook Watch. But a majority of questions they fielded had to do instead with the distribution of objectionable material through the video platform. Simo took the first such question, which made reference to content from Holocaust deniers being available on Facebook.
“Just to be very clear, we find Holocaust denial absolutely abhorrent,” Simo said. “We have community guidelines and community standards to guide a lot of these decisions, and sometimes our difficult decisions are not totally black and white.”

In their TCA debut, Facebook executives detailed the long road they have to be on to join the ranks of the Netflixes and even AMCs of the original TV game.
“Our breakouts may look different than what you would expect from other platforms,” said Fidji Simo, vice president of product. “We’re not going for big prestige TV drama.” The social media giant is joining an ever-growing field of content distributors, having launched Facebook Watch a year ago.
“It takes a show that breaks through and becomes part of the cultural zeitgeist,” added Ricky Van Veen, head of global creative strategy, on what’s going to get Facebook Watch the same respect of an AMC or HBO. He mentioned noted basketball-dad Lavar Ball, who produces “Ball in the Family” and their Tom Brady docuseries have already broken through a bit.

After going through the fake-news wringer, Facebook is shelling out money on original news content. The strategy is partly aimed at driving up viewing on its Facebook Watch platform — but it also is supposed to demonstrate the social-media giant’s commitment to funding trustworthy journalism.
The initial shows, fully funded by Facebook, come from seven partners: TV news orgs ABC News, CNN, Fox News Channel, and Univision; local news publisher Advance Local; and digital media companies Attn: and Mic. They’re slated to roll out on Facebook Watch this summer. The mix includes live breaking news, daily news briefings, and weekly, longer-form series.
The initiative is led by Campbell Brown, Facebook’s head of global news partnerships, a former CNN host and NBC News reporter who joined the company in January 2017. “They’re not just cutting up TV and putting it on Facebook,” Brown said. “This is to engage people around news,...

After repeatedly being in the news for treating user data with a flippant hand and propagating 'fake news', Facebook now wants to double down on producing its own news content for its nascent video hub, Watch. And the social network is reportedly ready to plunk down a pretty penny in order to do so.
Facebook is in the process of courting publishers to create daily and weekly news shows for Watch -- offering budgets that range from $5 million to $10 million annually for daily shows and from $1 million to $2 million for weekly series, Digiday reports. An initial slate of roughly six shows would kick off this summer -- and run for a year -- under the tutelage of Campbell Brown (pictured above), who was named head of news partnerships for Facebook in January 2017.After repeatedly being in the news for treating user data with a flippant hand and propagating 'fake news',...

Often times celebrities are given rolling eyes when they become invested in a political movement, but their collective star power can make a major impact. The more I think about it, the more convinced I am that Norah O’Donnell’s departure to CBS may be the biggest defection NBC has endured in nearly two decades – since Brian Ross jumped to ABC in 1994…and certainly since Chris Wallace jumped to ABC a few years before that. I know, I know…”What about Katie Couric? What about Soledad O’Brien? What about Campbell Brown?” The difference between those defections and O’Donnell’s is how it impacts NBC long term. There was little to no collateral damage done to NBC when Couric, O’Brien, and Brown left. Today and Weekend Today easily survived and flourished. But O’Donnell’s departure creates a long term hole for NBC to address – who will succeed Andrea Mitchell?...

Amy Sussman/Getty While moderating the 2008 Presidential Debate in Austin for CNN, Campbell Brown was the very definition of calm, cool and collected. “It was a lifetime dream for me coming true,” the 41-year-old television journalist recently noted during an appearance on Julie Menin’s Give and Take talk show. Having welcomed her first child two months before, Campbell had been shipping her breastmilk back to New York — but disaster was about to strike. “There was a snowstorm or something and the FedEx flight was delayed. Word has come down that CNN is planning to cancel its low-rated news show Paula Zahn Now. Up against Fox News and MSNBC in the very competitive 8pm timeslot, the show often came in third place in total viewers.
Newswoman Zahn has been with the network since September 11, 2001 when she joined anchor Aaron Brown to covering the tragic events of that day. She then hosted a morning program entitled American Morning with Paula Zahn and began hosting Paula Zahn Now in September 2003.
CNN is reportedly trying to woo Weekend Today's co-anchor Campbell Brown away from NBC to fill the slot. Zahn is expected to leave CNN in the fall when her contract runs out. Stay tuned!
