Jeopardy! fans were left stunned on Thursday, November 10, as super-champ Matt Amodio was knocked out of the Tournament of Champions, ending the hopes of seeing him take on Amy Schneider in next week’s finals. The PhD student from New Haven, Connecticut, who won 38 consecutive games in 2021, found himself against tough competition in Professors’ Tournament winner Sam Buttrey and software team lead John Focht. All three contestants were closely tied heading into Final Jeopardy! and all three correctly solved the final clue. However, Amodio chose to wager 0, which left him in last place. In the end, it was Buttrey, an associate professor of operations research, who walked away with the victory after wagering 10,601. The twists and turns of Jeopardy‘s Tournament of Champions continued on Thursday, November 3, as fan favorite Rowan Ward was knocked out of the competition. Ward, a non-binary contestant, landed their spot in the ToC after winning the second round of the Second Chance Tournament. After their impressive performance, many fans had high hopes for Ward as they faced off against software team leader John Focht and community college instructor Courtney Shah in the quarter-finals game. However, Focht was the one who ended up stealing the show, as he calmly answered questions and placed huge wagers. After landing on a Daily Double, Focht wagered a massive 8,000, even surprising host Ken Jennings, who responded, “Wow, alright!” Focht answered correctly, significantly increasing his total. Jeopardy! has found its final Tournament of Champions competitor as Rowan Ward was crowned Jeopardy! Second Chance’s Week 2 winner following Week 1’s Jessica Stephens. The non-binary player and fan favorite is a chart caller, writer, and editor from Chicago, Illinois, and they will soon face a handful of other strong Jeopardy! competitors in the highly-anticipated Tournament of Champions which kicks off on Monday, October 31. Ward earned a spot among the Second Chance ranks after they nobly played against Matt Amodio and nearly beat the multi-game-winner. Now, they could have a chance to face Amodio again, but only time will tell as Ward will first have to compete against Courtney Shah and John Focht in the episode airing Thursday, November 3, as teased in the recently revealed Toc matchups.
