Fremantle Backs Diversity Leadership Scheme
Fremantle has teamed with The TV Collective, Indigo Talent, and former ITV Studios executive Remy Blumenfeld to launch a scheme that will work with 50 middle-to-senior Bame professionals to help them break into industry leadership roles. Under the Breakthrough Leaders initiative, those chosen will be mentored by a top industry figure, have access to coaching, and be part of a cohort of fellow executives. Nominations can be submitted here, with a deadline for entries being set for January 15. The scheme is designed to address industry concerns that there are plenty of entry-level initiatives for people from diverse backgrounds, but Bame professionals are hitting a glass ceiling when it comes to breaking into top roles. Fremantle’s own global leadership team is made up entirely of white executives, while in the UK, Fatima Salaria and Athena Witter are part of the top team.

London -- Uncertainty hovers over ITV's international production business ITV Studios after senior staff were told Wednesday that ITV Studios director of formats Remy Blumenfeld and ITV Studios managing director Lee Bartlett will leave later this summer.
The move, announced at a staff leadership breakfast by CEO Adam Crozier, clears the way for former Channel 4 director of programming Kevin Lygo to take up the creative reins across all local and international production for ITV.
Crozier has appointed former Disney executive Maria Kyriacou to the new role of managing director of ITV Studios Global Entertainment, reporting to a new chief operating officer of ITV Studios who has yet to be hired.
But insiders believe that the changes take no account of the complexity of the internationally facing division's partnerships and relationships, which include landmark deals with such partners as China's Hunan TV and Sony in India as well as...

Cannes -- Emerging from a recession-battered global TV market, buyers and sellers will convene on the Riviera this week to talk co-production, formats and low-cost production at the TV sales market Miptv.
Cooperation models that slice and dice costs are in, as buyers look for low-cost, high-volume -- yet still quality -- fare. From Cologne to Canberra, affordable financing is the name of the game.
"Of course distribution and licensing deals are still core to what happens at the market, but we are also seeing a need to develop much earlier stage conversations on formats, co-productions and financing," says Laurine Garaude, director of television for Miptv parent Reed Midem.
Garaude points to innovations like the debut Mip Formats day Sunday -- which garnered more than 600 sign-ups when just 350 were predicted -- as an example of how Miptv organizers are responding to changing times. The Producers' Forum, where co-production matchmaking and...

London -- ITV Studios has secured a major foothold in the Chinese television market through a new format partnership with Chinese broadcaster Hunan TV, under which the companies will work to develop and license entertainment and unscripted formats for broadcast on Hunan Satellite Television beginning this year.
The three-year deal was announced by Ouyang Changlin, president of Hunan Television, and Lee Bartlett, managing director of ITV Studios, the production division of Britain's leading commercial broadcaster, ITV.
It will see the Chinese entertainment broadcaster -- which reaches 58 million viewers -- license multiple formats over the next three years from ITV Studios, home to such global formats as "I'm a Celebrity ... Get Me Out of Here!" and "Hell's Kitchen."
The companies will also co-develop, create and jointly own a slew of new locally created formats -- to be produced for the Chinese market by Hunan TV, and be represented internationally by ITV Studios.

Cannes -- In a deal aimed at putting board game formats into primetime television, ITV Studios and Scrabble and Pictionary creator Mattel Inc. on Tuesday announced a major creative partnership that will see ITV work with the global toy manufacturer to develop television, online, mobile and other formats for some of its best-known brands.
The deal allows ITV Studios to mine the Mattel archive for board game concepts that could translate to a range of different media, and distribute them worldwide, said Barry Waldo, vp worldwide entertainment at Mattel, who said the partnership was "a very organic fit" and would unlock a lot of value from its portfolio.
"We look for talent and relationships when we set up a partnership, and with ITV we have a really aligned creative vision," he said. "These brands are very precious to us."

CANNES -- The trend toward the European production "super-indie" is set to continue as the Big Fish get bigger by snapping up the smaller ones. But the race to create multigenre giants needs to be managed carefully or creativity can become the first casualty of the deal, participants at MIPTV said this week.
"It's not about becoming a supertanker, it's more like building a flotilla of smaller ships where we all sail under our own brands but as part of a fleet" said Remy Blumenfeld, chief creative officer of private equity-backed Amaze TV, which last October secured about $350 million in financing from Palamon Capital Partners to build a European production and distribution venture through acquisitions.
"This is a business in which people and ideas are the assets -- you can buy a company with a great bottom line, but if it doesn't invest in people then it isn't going to work," added Blumenfeld, warning that companies need to remain nimble to be able to generate fresh ideas and have to resist the homogenous structure that strangles creative processes.

LONDON -- Netherlands-based TV production outfit D&D Media has teamed with British-based counterpart Amaze TV to form an expansion-hungry "super-indie" backed by £185 million ($377 million) in private-equity financing.
With funding from London-based Palamon Capital Partners and production bases in Belgium, France and Germany, the as-yet-unnamed joint venture aims to create a global media group along the lines of Endemol and Fremantle that is capable of producing and distributing drama and entertainment content worldwide.
Amaze TV founder Remy Blumenfeld, creator of risque formats like "There's Something About Miriam", in which straight guys unknowingly date a transsexual, will be the group's chief creative officer. He joins D&D co-founders Marc Dullaert and Paul Dumas on the executive board.
The producer also aims to launch operations in Scandinavia and South Africa by year's end through buyouts and partnerships.
Palamon, a midmarket private-equity specialist with about €1.1 billion ($1.6 billion) under management, made its first investment in media in June with its acquisition of a majority stake in D&D, a specialist in advertiser-funded content and interactive entertainment.
