BAFTA has shaken up major categories and rung in some eligibility changes as entries open for the 2024 TV awards.
Limited drama is a new category for scripted one-off programs or series that tell a complete story over 1-19 episodes, replacing separate categories for single drama and mini-series. “The introduction of limited drama maintains the opportunity for single self-contained films to be eligible following a decline in entries to the single drama category in recent years,” BAFTA said.
To put this in perspective, at the 2023 awards, “I Am Ruth,” starring Kate Winslet, won the single drama category, while Nicôle Lecky’s “Mood” won the best mini-series category. In 2024, there will only be one winner, under the new limited drama category. The drama series category remains unchanged.
The changes were flagged earlier by BAFTA. As set out in the 2023 rulebook, categories with under 20 entries will see three, rather than the standard four nominations announced,...

Lyrics from two songs on Beyoncé’s new album Renaissance were updated as a result of discussions on social media. A verse on “Heated” was altered after activists noted it contained language that has been described as ableist. Then, the singer Kelis shared a series of Instagram posts expressing frustration that her hit “Milkshake” was sampled on the album without her knowledge, describing it as “theft.” Both instances raise questions about the increasing malleability of music as a digital product.
Already, albums from major musicians are often updated with deluxe editions featuring added songs.

Time’s Up, the women’s organization started by Hollywood A-listers that has recently been shrouded in controversy, reportedly decided against publicly supporting the first accuser of former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo.
According to a new report by the Washington Post, leaders within Time’s Up worked closely with Cuomo’s office when his first sexual harassment accuser, Lindsey Boylan, came forward.
The exposé goes into great detail, providing alleged text messages from December 2020, when the Cuomo accusations first hit, between the organization’s leaders, including embattled president and CEO Tina Tchen, who reportedly told her staff to “stand down” on releasing a public statement in support of Boylan.
Variety has not authorized the validity of the text messages printed in the Washington Post’s report. Time’s Up did not respond to Variety‘s requests for comment on Wednesday night.

Harvey Weinstein accuser Rosanna Arquette is criticizing ABC’s late-night news program “Nightline” for airing an interview Friday with the disgraced producer’s lawyer, saying the “one-sided” segment is the defense’s attempt “to distort the facts.”
“ABC’s Nightline’s grossly irresponsible, one-sided reporting is shameful and deeply detrimental to the survivors like myself who were assaulted and abused by Harvey Weinstein,” Arquette told TheWrap.
In the segment, ABC News reporter Amy Robach sat down with Weinstein’s attorney, Donna Rotunno, who explained her plan to defend Weinstein ahead of his Jan. 6 trial, and dismissed accusations made by the more than 80 women who accuse Weinstein of sexual misconduct, from harassment to rape.
“It sends a dangerous message to women that by reporting a crime, we will be subjected to victim-blaming and not be believed,” Arquette continued. “As his trial date approaches, I stand by the brave women who are...

The show, which was created by Alex Horne and is hosted by The Inbetweeners star Greg Davies, has run on UKTV’s Dave since 2015 with its ninth season launching in September.
It is produced by Last Week Tonight with John Oliver producer Avalon Television with Horne, Richard Allen-Turner, Rob Aslett, James Taylor, Jon Thoday and Andy Devonshire exec producing with Andy Cartwright as series producer.
The show will air on Channel 4 with repeats on youth-skewing network E4. The move is a blow for UKTV which has seen Taskmaster become its highest-rated original series.

While his past few months have been embroiled in controversies over female representation and MusiCares, there’s no question that Neil Portnow will leave big shoes to fill when he steps down from his post at the helm of the Recording Academy and Grammy Awards in July of next year. During his tenure, Portnow has negotiated a $600 million agreement that will keep the Grammy Awards on CBS through 2026; brought the voting process online and thus modified and activated the voting body; and been a strong advocate for the music industry on Capitol Hill. Just as importantly, under his watch, the Grammys have come into the present: Despite the oft-justified complaints that the Academy seems out of touch, it has come a long way since Steely Dan or the “O Brother Where Art Thou?” soundtrack won Album of the Year: The past five Album of the Year winners have been Bruno Mars,...

Washington — The White House Correspondents Dinner has for years been about much more than the event itself: News organizations, internet firms and Washington power players have for years held their own fetes on days and nights surrounding the dinner.
This year is no exception. The arrival of Donald Trump’s administration to Washington also marked the end of some long-time parties, like a New Yorker bash and a Time-People party, but others have started. This year, Playboy is sponsoring an after-dinner “No Tie” party, hosted by Cooper Hefner, at a downtown D.C. location. The media outlet said it will mark its commitment to the First Amendment and a free press.
Other highlights of the weekend:
Thursday:
Bytes and Bylines — Allen Gannett, Eric Kuhn, John McCarthy, Susanna Quinn and Jon Steinberg host their annual event, along with Cheddar, this year at the residence of Ireland’s ambassador to the U.

Doug Jones’ victory during the Alabama Senate elections on Tuesday night caused many of his supporters to immediately celebrate the win on Twitter — including many of those who are Hollywood A-listers.
Jones became the first Democratic senator to represent Alabama in 20 years and also became the first Democrat to succeed in 2017’s Congressional special elections.
His opponent, Republican Roy Moore was embroiled in controversy after multiple women alleged he had pursued them for romantic and sexual relationships when they were only teenagers and he was in his thirties. Moore denied the allegations but lost the support of Senators who endorsed him.

The Women’s March on Washington no doubt owes a debt of gratitude to Hillary Clinton, but apparently not enough to name her an official honoree.
The self-described “women-led movement” released its Guiding Vision and Definition of Principles on Thursday, which included the names of 27 women who were singled out as “revolutionary leaders who paved the way for us to march.”
It came as a surprise to many that the first woman to win the nomination for president of a major political party did not make the cut.
A petition to have Clinton’s name added to the list quickly popped up on Change.

No socks, no problem for the president-elect.
At a New Year’s Eve bash at his Mar-a-Lago estate in Florida on Saturday, Donald Trump shared the stage with a convicted felon who goes by the nickname “Joey No Socks,” a video obtained by the Palm Beach Daily News reveals.
In the clip, Joseph “Joey No Socks” Cinque stands by Trump’s side loudly cheering on the president-elect as he lists off his campaign promises before hundreds of guests.
“The taxes are coming down, regulations are coming off, we’re going to get rid of Obamacare,” Trump says as Cinque grins and pumps his fists.

Donald Trump was quick to link rival Hillary Clinton to Anthony Weiner's latest sexting scandal after the former congressman's wife, top Clinton aide Huma Abedin, announced she was leaving him on Monday. Wanda Sykes cuts through the muck of the 2012 Presidential Election as only she can with a rapid-fire, roundtable discussion of political issues featuring a bi-partisan panel of politicos in Logo’s NewNowNext Vote with Wanda Sykes election special.
Says Wanda to the attending Republican panelists: "I'm a black, gay woman. I think the only way to make the Gop hate me more is if I sent them a video of me rolling around on a pile of welfare checks."
The show aims to educate, activate and entertain viewers while shining a spotlight on the state of national politics through an Lgbt lens. The first of several specials was taped on Friday in front of a live studio audience in Times Square in New York City, and the panel got into some heated (and frequently comedic) debates on topics such as the economy, healthcare, education, women’s rights, job protection and gay marriage.

Good morning!
The Real L Word's Romi Klinger went on Dr. Drew's Hln show last night and talked about receiving hate mail, having daddy issues and how getting sober had her rethinking men.
I hope no one who watched that show thinks all lesbians hate bisexual women, that Romi's back to men because she needs a man to protect her, or that being an alcoholic leads to lesbianism. On that note, here's a clip of Romi and Dusty from tonight's season finale.
Meanwhile, Sara's parents are in town for the wedding.
Naya Rivera talked with The Hollywood Reporter about Season 4 of Glee. So what's Brittana up to?
At the start of the season, they're definitely still together — she's at the high school dealing with all the new people and Santana is at Louisville dealing with her new schedule there.

Actress Katey Sagal doesn't think Ann Romney should be winning and "Mom of the Year" awards any time soon.
Sagal spit a little fire Romney's way during the Comedy Central "Roast of Roseanne," where comedians gathered to skewer 59-year-old actress Roseanne Barr.
"Roseanne, I feel honored that you and I broke new ground as TV moms who didn’t cook, didn’t clean, and didn’t make any money," Sagal said during the Comedy Central special which aired Sunday night. "In the ’90s that made you a bad mom, but today it makes you Mitt Romney’s wife."
Barr apparently loved the jab, clapping and laughing from the side of the stage.
Sagal famously played Peggy Bundy on "Married... with Children." She spent her time snacking on bon-bons and buying new clothes instead of cleaning the house, caring for her kids or even remotely attempting to get a job.

To hear conservatives tell it, CNN commentator Hilary Rosen's supposed "attack" on prospective First Lady Ann Romney was some sort of innocence-crushing deviation from a pristine norm in which candidates' spouses are off-limits, as they should be. However, Michelle Malkin's recent attack on First Lady Michelle Obama is nothing more than a reminder that attacking President Obama's wife has been Sop at Fox since well before he was elected President, and has continued unabated since.

During a segment on Hannity last night, Michelle Malkin questioned the "lapdog media" on why it had not gone on the attack after First Lady Michelle Obama, and why they hadn't dragged her into the presidential race. Given the outcry against Hilary Rosen for taking a swipe at Ann Romney, a direct attack on the First Lady (who is not an elected official) seemed unwise, and many were quick to say so.

First lady Michelle Obama wouldn't mind trading places with Beyonce, telling People magazine if she could be someone else, it'd be a great singer.
She also revealed President Barack Obama doesn't shy away from his duties as husband-in-chief -- he makes sure to tuck her into bed as part of a daily ritual.
"We have a ritual where he tucks me in, because I'm usually in bed before anybody," Obama said. "He'll come and turn the lights out and give me a kiss and we'll talk. He's like, 'Ready to be tucked?' I'm like, 'Yes I am.'"
The couple also take private walks with Bo to check in without the kids, she said.
Obama has been promoting American Grown, her new book about the White House Kitchen Garden. While discussing her husband, she joked about the president's now widely-discussed penchant for singing, saying it's sometimes difficult to get him to stop.

Hilary Rosen, whose profile as a pundit was raised perhaps the highest of any other during the peak of the "War on Women" contraception and motherhood debate, told CNN today that she "hated" the term "War on Women" and found the concept "disturbing." Rosen, on a panel to debate women as a political constituency with Margaret Hoover and host Christine Romans, explained that it did not make sense to "think of women as a constituency-- we are the majority," and she and Hoover agreed that, as far as the economy goes, women are just as much at its mercy as men.

Hmm, wonder if this will get Roseanne Barr some additional votes. The comedian turned presidential candidate has lashed out at Mitt Romney's wife, Ann, over comments she made recently about motherhood being a full-time job following Democratic strategist Hilary Rosen's remarks (and subsequent apology) criticizing her for having "never worked a day in her life." Jon Stewart says Hilary Rosen's contention that multi-millionaire mom Ann Romney "never worked a day in her life" has had the unexpected effect of making "the Republican Party pro-choice." It's one of the political games people play: trying to get political figures to own something that someone else said. A particularly egregious example of this was last week's Hilary Rosen flap, when the media and the Obama administration foolishly played along. After winning the war on women last week, you'd think Stephen Colbert would need to take a breather, but on Monday night's "Colbert Report" he did just the opposite and threw his hat into the ring in the war for women.
It seems that the 2012 election is bound to be a very female-focused one -- whether it's the Hilary Rosen melee, the president's "women are not an interest group" tagline, or Mitt Romney's pro-mom bumper stickers, we're in for a lot of talk about ladies these next few months. And with all of the Democrats and Republicans fighting for whose side is more appealing, Colbert decided to offer an alternative: himself.
"Ladies," he said. "My side is right by your side."
Watch the full clip above and let us know who you think is fallopian-it-to-win-it in the comments.

Jon Stewart returned this weekend to a perfect Daily Show style scandal: the Secret Service hired prostitutes and some were kicked out of Colombia! The puns were ready, the jokes low hanging fruit, and yet he had to let it go to focus on what the media was paying attention to: "last week, some lady said a stupid thing." The "full on media shit-tastrophe" after Democratic commentator Hilary Rosen said Ann Romney had not "worked a day in her life" yielded much to make fun of for Stewart, particularly at Fox News, where Sarah Palin even brought out a "hoohah" pin during the firestorm.

Ann Romney has been getting far more airtime in recent days, between the attacks on her by Hilary Rosen to, now, an upcoming interview alongside her husband Mitt with ABC News' Diane Sawyer. The interview, which touches on a number of controversial subjects, will air in part at 6:30 Et tonight and 11:35 Et on Nightline, had the Romneys also answering questions about Seamus Romney, the famous dog Mitt Romney once admitted to tying to the roof of the car on family trips. Responding to the concern of many that the practice was cruel, Romney assured Sawyer, "the dog loved it!"...

Presidential candidate Roseanne Barr penned a short editorial for The Daily Beast this morning in which the erstwhile sitcom star took issue with pundit Hilary Rosen’s comments about Ann Romney having “never worked a day in her life,” though perhaps not the way you thought she might.
Barr disclaimed that she didn’t want to fall into the “working mom versus stay-at-home mom” dialogue, but her disdain for Rosen’s unfortunate words was clear: Barr was less upset about what the statement conveyed about motherhood than she was dismayed that the comments were giving Mitt Romney fodder for winning sympathy among American women.

Conservative radio host Rush Limbaugh blamed the feminist movement and women’s liberation for Hilary Rosen’s controversial comments last week in which she attacked Ann Romney for giving her husband, former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, economic advice despite having not “worked a day in her life.” Limbaugh said that it was the fact that “instead of having the government, stay-at-home moms have a husband to support them” which irritates women like Rosen the most.

On Monday's Starting Point, Soledad O'Brien responded critically to the news that Ann Romney had called Hilary Rosen's comments an "early birthday present" "It made it sound like it was about strategy and not about 'what a great opportunity' to talk about my family. It was more like, 'Wow, I was able to score political points on an issue that could help my husband win.'"...

On Sunday, CNN anchor Don Lemon hosted a panel discussion with CNN contributors Will Cain and Lz Granderson on the controversial comments about Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney’s wife Ann Romney made by Democratic strategist Hilary Rosen last week. Cain finally erupted over Rosen’s comments and said that Democrats have been dividing the electorate in so many ways that “you’re going to get internal firing.

As if Mitt Romney and the Republicans hadn't already overplayed the hand that the media dealt them by snipping and blowing up a comment from CNN's Hilary Rosen into a fake "War On Moms," along comes MSNBC's Chris Hayes to give Gov. Romney his come-Up-pance. The Rosen flap relied on the out-of-context notion that being a stay-at-home mom isn't work (Rosen didn't say anything close to that), but Hayes and co. unearthed a January clip of Romney suggesting that very premise, in fairly unmistakable terms.

Given its objective to cover the week's biggest news stories, the Hilary Rosen/Ann Romney feud took up plenty of time on Fox News Watch today, as the panel explored the connection between Rosen and the White House and the perceived fallacies of her logic. On the program today, Jim Pinkerton and Judith Miller noted that 35 visited to the White House made her more than a friend to the administration, while Kirsten Powers argued that, by Rosen's logic, First Ladies Michelle Obama and Hillary Clinton shouldn't have a say in politics, either.

Mike Huckabee's semi-weekly visit to the weekend Fox & Friends crew today understandably focused primarily on Hilary Rosen and first shot fired in the general election: the claim that Ann Romney "hasn't worked a day in her life." Needless to say, Huckabee did not appear much impressed with the comments, but he did find the Democratic reaction to them shockingly swift, saying, "I've never seen Democrats swim backwards so much."...
