In his over half-a-century-long Hindi film career, he sang more than a thousand songs, but just three serve to demonstrate his position in the industry’s scheme of things – the madcap “Ek Chatur Naar” where Kishore Kumar beats him; the enchanting qawwali “Na to karvaan ki talash hai” where Mohammed Rafi emerges triumphant eventually; and the classical contest “Ketaki gulab juhi”, where he beats Pandit Bhimsen Joshi.
This was part of the misfortune of Prabodh Chandra ‘Manna’ Dey, born on this day (May 1) in 1919 in Calcutta. His classical training, innate talent, and “masculine” voice made him perfect for all shades of songs – romantic (including those for the vintage-aged), folk ballads, philosophical musings, and more, but he was never deemed a top-notch singer.

“Traditional suturing techniques in India often involve using metal clips, plasters, and bandages. However, such techniques are known to pose risks due to poor sterilisation and cause unwanted reactions in patients,” said Ayshi Ganguly, Medical Devices Analyst at GlobalData,...

New Delhi, June 13 (Ians) Former Bcci president Sourav Ganguly has advised the Indian team to play fearless cricket in order to end the long title drought at International Cricket Council (Icc) events.
Fans had high hopes from India at the World Test Championship final, but they suffered a crushing defeat against Australia at The Oval.
With another loss, India’s prolonged hunt for their first Icc title since 2013 continues. After the Champions Trophy win in 2023, India have featured in four semifinals and four finals of major Icc events but haven’t been able to cross the final hurdle.
“In the last 10 years, they played four finals. It’s not that they’ve been absolutely poor. They have just not won the big finals, hopefully that will happen. As someone who has seen Indian cricket closely. My only advice is to play without fear when you get to these big moments.

Tendulkar won the World Cup, innumerable Man of the Match and Series awards, scored the first-ever Odi double ton, made the highest number of centuries, the highest number of runs, most caps for the country… he did it all but his critics, which are very less in numbers, also keep reminding fans about his failures on big days.
No doubt, Sachin carried the burden of pressure and expectations of Indian cricket fans throughout his career but he also failed on a few days, when the country wanted him to lead from the front with the bat and win it for Team India.
One such day was March 23, 2003, when India played an intimidating Australia in the Icc World Cup Final in Johannesburg. The Sourav Ganguly-led Indian cricket team was on a roll in that World Cup in South Africa, where they reached the final with just one defeat in the tournament.

New Delhi, April 12 (Ians) Delhi Capitals’ Director of Cricket Sourav Ganguly has said that his players will have to bat better and put up more runs on the board in their upcoming matches to reverse the downturn in their fortunes in the Indian Premier League (Ipl) 2023.
Delhi Capitals lost a last-ball thriller to Mumbai Indians at the Arun Jaitley Stadium, Delhi on Tuesday, doing down by six wickets as Mumbai Indians bowled them out for 172 before chasing the total down in 20 overs. Delhi Capitals have lost four out of four so far in the tournament.
Speaking about the match, Sourav Ganguly said, “The loss certainly hurts, especially because of the way this team has played since 2019. But these things happen in sports. It’s never easy when you lose. There are so many youngsters on our side and we’ll take time to be a good team.”

"Bhagne ki koshish mat karna. Humne tumhe chaaron taraf se gher liya hai. Bhalai isi mein hai ke tum apne aap ko kanoon ke hawaale kar do," or its near variants, became the template for the denouement of scores of action Hindi films from the 1950s to the 1980s, as a pistol-toting Iftekhar, usually accompanied by a squad of policemen, reached the spot to rescue the hero and heroine and/or round up the villains.
While his near-contemporary Jagdish Raj (Khurana) holds the record of maximum outings as a police officer in Hindi films (144), Iftekhar was not far behind with 75-odd such roles, playing an Inspector/Dsp/Sp/Commissioner in top films like "Ab Dilli Dur Nahin" (1957), "Guide" (1965), "Teesri Manzil" (1966), "Do Dooni Char" (1968), "Ittefaq" (1969), "Johny Mera Naam" (1970), "Hare Rama Hare Krishna" (1971), "Zanjeer" (1973), "Majboor" (1974), "Fakira" (1976), "Don" (1978) and "Krodhi" (1981), among others.

New Delhi, Feb 20 (Ians) Former captain and ex-Bcci chief Sourav Ganguly hailed India’s performance after their win in the second Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy against Australia and said that the hosts play better than any other team on spin-friendly pitches.
Ravindra Jadeja’s best bowling figures in an inning in Test cricket (7/42) along with Ravichandran Ashwin’s spin masterclass helped India rout Australia by six wickets in the second Test within three days to go 2-0 up in the four-match series on Sunday.
“Not surprised by India’s 2nd Test win… congratulations to Indian team… on turning pitches they bat and bowl better than any opposition at any stage of the game,” Ganguly tweeted.
Australia had been much better in the second Test, scoring a competitive score in the first innings before having India 139/7 on day two. But Axar Patel’s 74 changed the face of the match,...

The former Indian captain knows a thing or two about a terrific win, as he was part of the history-making Indian team which won the Cricket World Cup at the Lord’s Cricket Ground in 1983 under the leadership of Kapil Dev, a win which would change the face of cricket in the country.
It was a final which was an absolute thriller, with six goals scored in 120 minutes, a late fightback from France, not once but twice and then the penalty shoot-out which decided the title winner.
Nearly four decades back Gavaskar and his teammates were rank outsiders against the then high and mighty West Indies, but they pulled off one of the sensational wins in the low-scoring final over the Caribbean cricketers.
The win on Sunday was a thriller albeit on a football field.

The already-rich Bcci added some big money with the addition of two new Ipl teams and media rights sale in 2022, which was lauded by the well-wishers of Indian cricket. It’s because the earned money is eventually divided among the stakeholders and reaches every deserving individual of the Indian cricket ecosystem.
Apart from the earnings for the Bcci, 2022 was an eventful year for Indian cricket for other reasons as well. The removal of Virat Kohli as captain, arrival of Rohit Sharma as new skipper and coach Rahul Dravid, and Sourav’s Ganguly ouster as Bcci President were the other big events which created ripples in the circuit.
However, it was the disappointments at the Asia Cup and the Icc T20 World Cup, which hurt the fans most. The Indian cricket fans had high hopes from skipper Rohit and coach Dravid because of their past records. While Rohit had won five...

Kolkata, Nov 4 (Ians) A public interest litigation (Pil) has been filed at Calcutta High Court against the removal of former Indian cricket team captain Sourav Ganguly as the Board of Control for Cricket in India (Bcci) President.
The Pil, filed by advocate Ramaprasad Sarkar, is likely to be heard on Tuesday.
Sarkar’s argument is that Ganguly was removed from the Bcci chief’s post despite there was a clear order from the Supreme Court that he could continue in that chair for another three years. “The apex court order also cleared the way for Jay Shah to continue as Bcci Secretary for another three years till 2025. However, despite Shah continuing to remain in his chair, Ganguly was removed,” he said.
He also said that being the former captain of the Indian cricket team and also former player of the Bengal team, Ganguly is the pride of Bengal. “This is an insult for the state.

Mumbai, Oct 18 (Ians) Former India all-rounder Roger Binny, who on Tuesday succeeded Sourav Ganguly as the newly-elected Bcci president, underlined two primary areas of focus — reducing player injuries, improving pitches for domestic cricket in the country.
In his first interaction with the media, the 1983 World Cup winner called the injuries to premier India cricketers a “concern” and said he wants to get to the bottom of it and figure out ways of reducing them.
“We will look to improve on what we can do to reduce the injuries to players. Players getting frequently injured is a concern, and we wish to get to the bottom of it all and see how it can be changed for the better,” Binny told reporters after Bcci’s annual general meeting, where he was elected.

A tabla player with a prominent theatrical troupe, he went on to partner with a harmonium player to create – and guide – the duo that seamlessly melded the strains of Indian classical and popular music with Western melodies to create an array of immortal tunes for films starring titans, from Raj Kapoor to Shammi Kapoor to Rajesh Khanna.

Kolkata, Oct 13 (Ians) Breaking his silence on his forthcoming exit from the post of the President of the Board of Control for Cricket in India, Sourav Ganguly on Thursday philosophically remarked “that all have to face rejections” eventually.
“No one can continue as the administrator throughout his life. All have to face rejections some time or the other. When you look at quick success it never happens. Remember, one does not become Narendra Modi or Sachin Teldulkar or an Ambani overnight,” he said after attending a function of Bandhan Bank here on Thursday.
Ganguly said that he enjoyed his term as the Bcci President thoroughly, and cited the accomplishments.
“However, my life as a cricketer was much more difficult. If you see there had been several developments in Indian cricket during the last three years when I was the Bcci President. We organised cricket during an extremely difficult period of Covid-19 pandemic.

New Delhi, Oct 12 (Ians) Former India captain Sourav Ganguly, who is soon going to become a former Bcci president, has fallen out of favour in the board and is reportedly ending his term on a ‘disappointing’ note.
During the upcoming Bcci Agm and elections on October 18, most members of the outgoing administration are set to find places in the new dispensation, barring Ganguly and Jayesh George, the joint secretary. And, Ganguly is definitely not pleased with the developments in the last few days.
The former India allrounder Roger Binny on Tuesday filed his nomination for the post of Bcci president and is likely to get elected unopposed since no other candidate has emerged so far as his challenger.

Kolkata, Oct 11 (Ians) A round of political mud-slinging has erupted in West Bengal between Trinamool Congress and Bjp over Sourav Ganguly’s exit as the Board of Control for Cricket in India (Bcci) President.
Trinamool Congress state General Secretary and party spokesman, Kunal Ghosh said that the fact Ganguly is existing as the Bcci President and the son of a heavyweight Bjp leader is continuing as the board Secretary is simply not acceptable.
“Only Sourav Ganguly can give an explanatory answer in the matter. I am not in a position to answer how far he will open up with this political explanation in the matter. But there was a point of time when Bjp tried to spread a message throughout West Bengal that Sourav Ganguly will be soon there in their camp. That message was also spread through a development of a heavyweight Bjp leader having dinner at his residence.

New Delhi, Oct 1 (Ians) The Bcci president Sourav Ganguly on Friday said that the injured Jasprit Bumrah is still not ruled out of the upcoming T20 World Cup and the clarity on India pacer’s availability for the mega event in Australia will come out in the next two or three days.
The 28-year-old was rushed to the National Cricket Academy (Nca) in Bengaluru from Thiruvananthapuram on Wednesday to undergo scans on his back after being ruled out of the ongoing three-match T20I series against South Africa.
It has been learnt that Bumrah went for scans and the assessment is underway at the Nca. The initial impression is that the back injury that the India pacer is suffering from is not as serious as it was originally thought to be. Though, there is no guarantee that he will be there for the showpiece event in Australia.

New Delhi, Sep 22 (Ians) The Indian Premier League (Ipl) will return to its original form pre-Covid-19, home-and-away format from the 2023 season, Bcci president Sourav Ganguly confirmed in a letter addressed to the state associations.
Since the outbreak of Covid-19 in 2022, Ipl has been either played outside of India or in limited venues in the country for the last three editions due to the restrictions.
However, with the pandemic situation improving with each passing day, and things “going back to normalcy”, the Ipl will return to its old format in which each team plays one home and one away match.
“The next season of men’s Ipl will also go back to the home and away format with all ten teams playing their home matches at their designated venues,” Ganguly wrote in the letter to state units.
The letter also gave information about the ongoing domestic season.
