London, Aug 3 (Ians) Recently-retired England fast bowler Stuart Broad has admitted that the feeling of him not bowling or batting anymore “still hasn’t sunk in”, adding that finishing on top at the end of an Ashes series was all he wanted.
Broad announced that he would retire from the game after day three of the fifth and final Ashes Test at The Oval. He got a fairytale finish to his career by claiming the last two wickets of the match on Day Five as England won by 49 runs to level the series 2-2 with Australia, with Broad taking 22 wickets across five games.
“I felt really relaxed that last day and just for (Chris) Woakes and Moeen [Ali] to set the tone as they did and get some early wickets was awesome. I played so much cricket with both of those guys and it was so special. Ultimately, I just feel...

Ashes 2023: Stuart Broad gets winning send-off as England beat Australia by 49 runs; draw series 2-2
London, July 31 (Ians) Veteran fast-bowler Stuart Broad got his perfect fairytale ending to a glorious cricketing career by picking the last two wickets as England beat Australia by 49 runs in the fifth and final Ashes Test at The Oval on Monday to level an enthralling series 2-2.
Resuming from 135 for no loss, Australia were going great guns with all ten wickets in hand, before a ball change in the 37th over took their top three batters out. Steve Smith and Travis Head led Australia’s recovery before the rain came in.
After the two-hour rain break ended, Chris Woakes and Moeen Ali blew Australia away as four wickets fell for only 11 runs. Todd Murphy and Alex Carey frustrated England for a brief period as Australia went from 264 for three to 294 for 8.

London, July 28 (Ians) Trailing 1-2 in the Ashes 2023 series and shot out for 283 in their first innings in the fifth and final Test, England are sweating on the availability of all-rounder Moeen Ali for the remaining part of the match.
Moeen, England’s main spinner in the match, was hurt on Thursday evening while running between the wickets in England’s first innings on Thursday at The Oval and did not take to the field in the final session on day one.
With Australia resuming at 61/1 in their first innings and hoping to take a big lead, England will be looking up to Moeen Ali to trouble them with his spin bowling. The Oval wicket is renowned for turning and Australia will be batting last in the match, Moeen’s spin bowling could be a huge factor.

Manchester, July 22 (Ians) Australia’s top-order batter Marnus Labuschagne scored his 11th Test century as he and rain played pivotal roles in keeping England away from victory in the fourth Ashes Test at Old Trafford on Saturday.
At stumps called in early due to rain, Australia reached 214 for 5 in 71 overs and are still 61 runs behind against England, who now need only five wickets to grab a victory with day five predicted to be massively affected by rain again.
When play finally got underway after rain washed out the morning session, Australia were at 113 for four. Labuschagne and Mitchell Marsh (31 not out) were solid in negotiating whatever was thrown at them by England’s bowlers desperate to separate the duo.
Whenever loose deliveries came, they were duly dispatched to boundary ropes as Labuschagne brought up his half-century in 99 balls. With the umpires declaring the light wasn’t conducive for pace bowling,...

New Delhi, July 18 (Ians) Moeen Ali has called Michael Vaughan to take an active role in English cricket’s battle against racism as he opened up publicly for the first time on a controversial tweet from the former captain that suggested the England all-rounder should inquire whether young Muslims are terrorists to enhance societal safety.
In 2017, Adil Ray asked Vaughan on Twitter whether he expected Moeen to go around asking Muslims he didn’t know whether they knew terrorists in between matches. To whichVaughan replied yes, if it helps “our kids’ future and environment become a safer place”.
In a documentary named ‘Is Cricket Racist?’, when Moeen was asked by Ray what he thought of Vaughan’s tweets from 2017, the all-rounder described Vaughan’s views as “very silly and dumb”, while insisting that cricket needs people like him to step up in the fight against racism.

Manchester, July 17 (Ians) Veteran quick James Anderson has replaced fellow pacer Ollie Robinson in England’s playing eleven for the fourth Ashes Test starting at Old Trafford on Wednesday.
Anderson was rested from England’s playing eleven for the third Test at Headingley, where they won by three wickets to keep the series alive. He now comes in for the Manchester Test in place of Robinson, who experienced back issues during the victory at Headingley. The back issues meant Robinson bowled only 11 overs in the first innings and didn’t bowl at all in second innings.
In the ongoing Ashes, Anderson has taken just three wickets at an average of 75.33 in the first two Tests at Edgbaston and Lord’s. He will now have a chance to bowl from the James Anderson End at his home ground Old Trafford, something which was also indicated by skipper Ben Stokes.

London, July 11 (Ians) Former captain Nasser Hussain has expressed his intention to persuade Joe Root to assume the No.3 for England in the ongoing Ashes 2023 series as the hosts face a selection headache when it comes to the spot.
The No. 3 position was filled by Ollie Pope until his Ashes campaign was cut short due to a shoulder injury sustained during the Lord’s Test. In an attempt to find a replacement, the team experimented with Harry Brook in the first innings of the Headingley Test, but the young batter struggled to make an impact.
By the second innings, Brook pushed back down to his usual position at No.5 after England sprung a surprise and sent Moeen Ali in at first drop. However, the decision to promote Moeen didn’t work out as he was dismissed cheaply for five.

London, June 27 (IANs) Seamer Josh Tongue will mark his Ashes debut as he has been included in England’s XI for the second Test at Lord’s, starting on Wednesday, after Moeen Ali missed out following the finger injury he sustained during the first Test.
Tongue made his Test debut against Ireland at Lord’s earlier this month, claiming 5-66 in the second innings. His inclusion in the only change from the team that lost the first Test at Edgbaston by two wickets.
Moeen suffered a blistered finger during the opening match of the series, which Australia clinched by two wickets in a thrilling contest that went deep into the final day.
The off-spinner’s exclusion means Joe Root will be the primary spin option available at Ben Stokes’ disposal. Root bowled 22 overs in the first Test, and managed to take one wicket with his off-break deliveries.

London, June 22 (Ians) England are going to continue showing confidence in recalled-spinner Moeen Ali and wicketkeeper Jonny Bairstow, who is returning from an injury, in the second Test set to start at the Lord’s here on June 28, head coach Brendon McCullum has said.
England lost the opening Test by two wickets at Birmingham with Moeen and Bairstow struggling to come to terms with the Australians.
Moeen Ali, who came out of red-ball retirement after regular spinner Jack Leach got injured, managed 2-147 off 33 overs in Australia’s first innings score of 386 and then conceded 1-57 runs in 14 overs during the second as the visitors scampered to a two-wicket win at Edgbaston.
Bairstow, who got injured in a freak injury in a golf incident, scored a run-a-ball 78 in the first innings and then just 20 in England’s second innings. However, what mattered more is that he missed a few chances...

Ashes 2023: Would give England the edge; thinking and captaincy was brilliant, says Kumar Sangakkara
Birmingham, June 18 (Ians) Former Sri Lanka captain Kumar Sangakkara feels England have the edge over Australia in the ongoing first Ashes Test at Edgbaston, saying the captaincy and thinking in taking a slender seven-run lead has been brilliant.
England took the last five Australian wickets for 75 runs to bowl them out for 386 in the first session of day three’s play, with Ollie Robinson taking three of those scalps after a wicketless performance on Day Two’s play. For Australia, Usman Khawaja top-scored with 141, his first Test century in England.
“It is set up wonderfully and there will be an exciting two sessions from here. I think it is pretty even but the way the innings ended I would give England (the edge). The thinking was brilliant, the captaincy was brilliant. England are not going to settle for draws and now it will be if they can dominate with the bat after lunch.

Birmingham, June 18 (Ians) Opener Usman Khawaja hit his seventh Test century since being recalled by Australia to lead a solid effort on day two of the first Ashes Test against England at Edgbaston.
Khawaja’s brilliant unbeaten 126, his 15th career century but his first in Tests in England, and his vital partnerships with Travis Head (50) and Alex Carey (52 not out) helped Australia finish the day on 311/5, trailing by 82 with five wickets remaining.
Khawaja’s record since returning in the Sydney Test against the same opponents back in January of 2022 has been phenomenal.
The left-hander has hit tons in India and Pakistan in that time, as well as reaching triple figures at home against South Africa and England. But his record in English conditions had been poor before this outstanding knock in Birmingham.
Khawaja has now scored 1747 runs in the 31 innings since his return to the Australian fold, averaging an extraordinary 69.88 in that time.

New Delhi, June 15 (Ians) Former England captain Michael Atherton gave his verdict on the England side to face Australia in the first Test of the Ashes series on Friday and said he wouldn’t have picked the all-rounder in the playing XI after the Ben Stokes-led side named the lineup for the opening game against Australia.
The 35-year-old all-rounder retired from Test cricket at the end of the 2021 summer but has reversed his decision following discussions with Test Captain Stokes and head coach Brendon McCullum following Jack Leach’s injury.
“I wouldn’t have picked Moeen Ali. But I’m not Ben Stokes. I’m not Bazball. It’s a selection that is amazing when you think about it because Moeen Ali had retired from Test cricket. Hasn’t played Test cricket since September 2021.

London, June 7 (Ians) Former England captain Nasser Hussain admitted that off-spin all-rounder Moeen Ali coming out of Test retirement to replace an injured Jack Leach in the Ashes squad for first two matches is a “little bit of kick in the teeth to the other spinners who have been playing in the county cricket” .
Moeen had retired from Test cricket in 2021, scoring 2,914 runs and taking 195 wickets in 64 matches. But he has come out of the red-ball retirement to play in the upcoming Ashes after left-arm spinner Leach was ruled out of the five-match series due to a stress fracture of the lower back.

London, June 7 (Ians) England spin bowling all-rounder Moeen Ali has come out of Test retirement to join the squad for the first two of the Ashes Tests against Australia, starting from June 16.

London, June 5 (Ians) Former England captain Michael Atherton feels left-arm spin all-rounder Liam Dawson can be a like-for-like replacement for injured Jack Leach, after he suffered a lower-back stress fracture, thus ruling him out of the upcoming Ashes series against Australia.
Leach developed lower-back stress fracture symptoms during England’s ten-wicket victory over Ireland in their one-off Test at the Lord’s last week, where the left-arm spinner took four wickets and scans on Sunday revealed the fracture, which will keep him out of five-match Ashes series starting from June 16 at Edgbaston.
Leach had established himself as England’s main spinner under Ben Stokes’ captaincy and was the only specialist spinner named in the 16-man squad for the first two Tests. His absence is a huge blow to England, who now have only 11 days in hand to decide on his replacement for the Ashes.

Chennai, May 11 (Ians) As Chennai Super Kings recorded their seventh win to consolidate their second position in the points table after defeating Delhi Capitals by 27 runs, off-spin all-rounder Moeen Ali stated that Shivam Dube’s three sixes while making 25 were the real turning point in the match.

Chennai, May 11 (Ians) The 27-run win against Delhi Capitals took Chennai Super Kings to 15 points, moving them one point adrift of table-toppers Gujarat Titans, but what was more pleasing for Chennai Super Kings skipper M.S. Dhoni was the fact that his key allrounders Ravindra Jadeja and Moeen Ali got the chance to be in the middle for a longer duration in Match No 55 of Indian Premier League (Ipl) 2023.

Chennai, May 10 (Ians) Skipper Ms Dhoni’s late cameo (20 off 9) guided Chennai Super Kings (Csk) to a competitive total of 167/8 against Delhi Capitals (DC) in an Ipl 2023 game at the Ma Chidambaram Stadium, here on Wednesday.
DC spinners were at their best as they kept the Csk batters at bay with six batters crossing 20 and the highest individual score was 25. But Dhoni’s crucial cameo ensured Csk finished with a fighting total.
Opting to bat first, Csk lost the in-form opener Devon Conway early in the Powerplay. It was Axar Patel who got the big fish for lbw. Conway went for the slog sweep but missed it completely and ended up losing his wicket.
Ajinkya Rahane, who came next, started off with two boundaries and Gaikwad played an aggressive pull shot on the front foot for a boundary in the next over as Csk posted 49/1 at the end of the Power-play.

Dhoni told the technically-perfect Mumbai batter that he expected him to bat sensibly as per the situation and hold one end up.
“We spoke right at the start and he was like,” What are you looking for me? ” and I told him what I had in mind. He is not someone who will consistently hit sixes but he is very sound technically. I was very happy with the way he batted,” said Dhoni during the post-match presentation ceremony.

Chasing the moderate score, though New York Strikers lost five wickets for 46 runs at the halfway stage, Waseem through his defiant unbeaten 36 carried New York Strikers to the target with nine balls to spare. Waseem’s knock which came off 16 balls had three boundaries and three sixes.

Melbourne, Nov 15 (Ians) Veteran England all-rounder Moeen Ali has revealed he is “absolutely buzzing” following his side’s title triumph in the Icc T20 World Cup in Australia, with the 35-year-old adding the final against Pakistan at McG was the “biggest game” he’s ever played.
Moeen’s 13-ball 19 in the final won’t look like a great contribution but it came at an important juncture during the match with the run-rate starting to climb as the overs ticked away. Somebody needed to up the scoring rate and take the pressure off Ben Stokes, and Moeen did the job to perfection scoring at a strike rate of 146.15.
“It felt like the biggest game I’ve ever played in because obviously I was so desperate to win it,” Moeen was quoted as saying by Icc. “I feel like as a team we deserved it. I’m absolutely buzzing,” he added.

Melbourne, Nov 14 (Ians) The social media has appreciated the gesture of the Jos Buttler-led England team, which waited for team-mates Moeen Ali and Adil Rashid to step aside before uncorking the bubbly in celebration of the Icc T20 World Cup triumph over Pakistan in Melbourne on Sunday.
England clinched their second T20 World Cup title defeating Babar Azam’s Pakistan by five wickets with an over to spare at the iconic Melbourne Cricket Ground, with all-rounder Ben Stokes scoring an unbeaten 49-ball 52 as they raced to the victory target of 138 in 19 overs.
As is customary, the team uncorked the champagne bottle but not before Moeen and Rashid were asked to step aside. The due respect given to the religious sentiments of the two cricketers has been widely appreciated.

Melbourne, Nov 13 (Ians) After captaining England to their second Men’s T20 World Cup triumph in his first major tournament as the captain, Jos Buttler credited the victory to the side enjoying the rewards of a long journey with some changes over the years.
England’s white-ball revolution in 2015 culminated in Eoin Morgan winning the 2019 Odi World Cup at home. But that has now converted into absolute domination with Buttler now carrying that legacy successfully with a five-wicket win over Pakistan at the McG on Sunday.
The win also makes England the first team in history of men’s international cricket to hold both 50-over and 20-over World Cups at the same time, and unarguably the best white-ball side in the world.

Melbourne, Nov 12 (Ians) After a topsy-turvy time in the Men’s T20 World Cup in Australia, the final of the tournament has arrived. If the unpredictable weather of Melbourne permits a full match, then fans are in store for a blazing final between a confident England and solid Pakistan on Sunday, which is ironically a repeat of the settings of the 1992 Odi World Cup final clash.
With both teams on their quest to win just their second T20 World Cup title, the heavy rain predicted for the final showdown on Sunday as well as on Monday, the reserve day, the trophy could be shared between the two teams. Fans will be praying to the cricketing gods to conjure up miraculous circumstances for the match to be held, even if it is a 10-overs a side affair.

Adelaide, Nov 10 (Ians) In England’s excellent bowling performance during their ten-wicket win over India in second semifinal of Men’s T20 World Cup, leg-spinner Adil Rashid bowled an outstanding spell of 1/20 in four overs, where no Indian batter had an answer to the questions posed by him.
Rashid was introduced into the attack from the final over of the powerplay, and ended his quota of overs in the 12th over, having strangled India’s run-scoring through the middle overs and took out a dangerous Suryakumar Yadav with a slower leg-break outside the off-stump, which delighted captain Jos Buttler.
“Such a good team performance. I thought the bowlers were outstanding. Adil Rashid, I thought had his best day for a while. He was so tough to play. I thought he looked like getting a wicket every over. I thought he was outstanding. He’s been brilliant for a long, long period of time.

Leeds, Nov 7 (Ians) Though England have reached the semifinals of the Icc Men’s T20 World Cup, their journey has not been as smooth as they would have liked. England pipped Australia to the second spot in the Super 12 Group 1 on Net Run Rate and along with New Zealand to the last four stage and set up a clash with India.
However, England are yet to put up a complete performance in the 2022 Men’s T20 World Cup as they had lost to Ireland by five runs. The abandoned match against arch-rivals Australia too made things difficult for them. Their batting is one of the elements that has not clicked much and is the main reason for the rough ride in Australia.
England spinner Moeen Ali, however, sees a silver lining in the uncomfortable ride to the semifinals as previous teams have romped to the last-four stage but have fizzled out after that.

Melbourne, Oct 18 (Ians) England Test skipper Ben Stokes’ return to the T20I setup has added to Jos Buttler’s selection dilemma ahead of the Icc T20 World Cup, with the white-ball captain wanting to play the charismatic allrounder at the top of the order while also realising it could create an imbalance in the bowling department on bouncy Australian pitches.
“He (Stokes) is someone we want to try to give as much opportunity to impact the game as possible, try to get him up the order as high as we can,” Buttler was quoted as saying by Icc on Tuesday. “We’re looking to give him as much responsibility as possible and allow him to play his way to get the best out of him.”
With Alex Hales likely to partner Buttler as the top of the batting order and Dawid Malan almost certain to come in at No.

Perth, Oct 9 (Ians) England beat Australia by eight runs in a thrilling first T20I to take 1-0 lead in the three-match series at the Perth Stadium, here on Sunday.
The win marked England’s first victory in men’s T20Is in Australia in 11 years. Their first and only win in Australia in a T20I came in 2011 in Adelaide when they won by one wicket. Since then, England lost all six T20Is they played in Australia until the game on Sunday.
Put in to bat, Jos Buttler and Alex Hales treated Australia’s second-string attack – none of Pat Cummins, Josh Hazlewood, Mitchell Starc, Adam Zampa and Glenn Maxwell made the long trip west – with disdain and recorded a 132-run opening partnership to put England on course for a big total.
It was the highest men’s T20I first-wicket partnership in Australia, and England’s second highest in the format.

London, Oct 4 (Ians) After months of speculation, veteran England all-rounder Moeen Ali has shut the door on a return to Test cricket, saying he cannot see himself stuck in hotels for months, adding he wasn’t getting any younger at 35.
Moeen, who recently guided England to a historic T20I series win against Pakistan in Lahore leading the side in the absence of regular skipper Jos Buttler, had retired from Test cricket last September to prolong his white-ball career.
But following a change in the England cricket hierarchy, with Ben Stokes replacing Joe Root as captain and New Zealander Brendon McCullum coming in place of chief coach Chris Silverwood, Moeen entertained the though of coming out of Test retirement.
However, in his column for the Daily Mail, Moeen said he had categorically told England Test coach McCullum he was not interested in returning to the longest format of the game.
