Melbourne, Sep 3 (Ians) India captain Harmanpreet Kaur was the only player from the country selected in the inaugural Women’s Big Bash League (Wbbl) overseas draft, held on Sunday. She was placed in the platinum category of the draft and was picked by Melbourne Renegades, who also drafted in West Indies captain Hayley Matthews.
Harmanpreet returns to the Renegades and the Wbbl after missing last season due to injury. She was the Player of the Tournament in Wbbl season seven, after being the Renegades’ leading run-scorer (406) and wicket-taker (15). She recently represented the Trent Rockets in The Hundred, and led the Mumbai Indians to the inaugural Women’s Ipl title earlier this year.
“I’m so pleased we got both of them and I’m looking forward to them working with us again this year. It was a tough decision – do we go Harmanpreet at pick three, or do we go Hayley.

Mumbai, March 9 (Ians) Alyssa Healy led Up Warriorz will look to register their second win in the inaugural edition of the Women’s Premier League as they face Royal Challengers Bangalore at the iconic Brabourne Stadium, here on Friday.
The Up Warriorz began their campaign at the Wpl 2023 with a bang, as Grace Harris’ incredible power-hitting helped them clinch a sensational 3-wicket win against the Gujarat Giants at the Dy Patil Stadium.
In their opener, the Warriorz were in a spot of bother with the Giants bowling picking important wickets, however, a solid counter-attack from Kiran Navgire, Harris and Sophie Ecclestone provided the team with right amount of impetus in the home stretch, as they ran out comfortable winners on the night.
Right after, Healy and co were up against the Delhi Capitals at the Dy Patil Stadium. And while the result did not turn out in the Warriorz’s favour,...

Mumbai, March 8 (Ians) Up Warriorz on Wednesday drafted in uncapped Indian batter Shivali Shinde for rest of their campaign in the inaugural edition of Womens Premier League (Wpl) as a replacement for wicketkeeper-batter Laxmi Yadav, who sustained an injury during training.
Laxmi, hailing from Ghaziabad, was bought by the side at a base price of Inr 10 lakhs.
“Unfortunately, I had to return home with an injury. Obviously it is not ideal because we have been waiting for this opportunity for a long time and when the opportunity came, I got injured. But we should not lose hope due to injury.”
All the time I spent with the team in the camp was memorable. Everyone was very positive. The environment was very uplifting. It did not feel like this was my first tournament of this magnitude and there was no nervousness either. I was enjoying every moment. I learnt a lot...

New Delhi, Feb 26 (Ians) Women’s cricket in India has made huge strides ever since its breakout moment came as being runners-up in the 2017 Odi World Cup in England. Since then, India won Asia Cup, became runners-up of 2020 Women’s T20 World Cup, were semi-finalists in 2018 and 2023 Women’s T20 World Cups and also bagged maiden U19 Women’s T20 World Cup Trophy earlier in the year.
The question now arises is, what more needs to be done to further the development of women’s cricket in the country? The inaugural edition of Women’s Premier League (Wpl) is starting from March 4 and it promises to be another watershed moment in upping the growth of women’s cricket in the country.

Cape Town, Feb 24 (Ians) South Africa edged England in a thrilling semifinal to reach their first-ever Icc Womens T20 World Cup final with a six-run win here on Friday.
Tazmin Brits’s 68 set South Africa up for a commanding total of 164 for four, as she combined for a 96-run opening stand with Laura Wolvaardt, with no bowler safe from an onslaught.
England looked to respond in the same vein, racing to 50 runs before wickets regularly halted their progress, Brits taking four catches in the performance of a lifetime.
Nat Sciver-Brunt and Heather Knight tried to steer England home, but they could not deny South Africa a place in the showpiece on home soil.
Brits and Wolvaardt showed none of the nerves on display against Bangladesh just three days ago as they set the tone for a run-fest. The duo started patiently, but flicked the switch for Charlie Dean’s first over,...

Cape Town, Feb 23 (Ians) England opener Danni Wyatt reckons the pressure is completely on South Africa ahead of the second semi-final in the 2023 Icc Women’s T20 World Cup at Newlands Cricket Ground in Cape Town on Friday.
England, the inaugural winners of the Women’s T20 World Cup in 2009, face the hosts in the semifinal after winning all four of their group-stage matches, the last of which was a whopping 114-run victory over a hapless Pakistan.
“I think the pressure is all on South Africa. It’s the home world cup for them. So, we’re just going to keep doing what we’re doing. There’s such a calm feeling in our group at the minute, which is really nice. So, I think we’re not going to change anything.”

New Delhi, Feb 22 (Ians) Up Warriorz on Wednesday named the talismanic Australia wicketkeeper-batter Alyssa Healy as their captain ahead of the inaugural season of the Womens Premier League (Wpl), to be held from March 4-26 in Mumbai.
Alyssa, one of the most recognised faces in the sport, is a highly experienced and seasoned campaigner, having played 139 games for Australia in T20Is, scoring close to 2,500 runs, with one century and 14 fifties as well. She is also considered to be one of the best wicket-keeper batters in the sport, with 110 dismissals in T20Is.
One of the senior-most members of the dominant Australian side, Alyssa has been a key cog in the wheel, and is known to reserve her best performances for the biggest stages, such as slamming a fantastic 75 from 39 balls in the 2020 Women’s T20 World Cup final at the Melbourne Cricket Ground, where a record-breaking 86,174 people watched Australia win their fifth title.

Cape Town, Feb 22 (Ians) Hosts South Africa reached the semi-finals of the Icc Womens T20 World Cup 2023 with a thumping 10-wicket win over Bangladesh in their last group game, here on Tuesday night.
The Proteas made heavy weather of chasing down a modest target of 114 set by Bangladesh, powered by their outstanding captain Nigar Sultana Joty’s 30. The hosts chased the target with 13 balls to spare as Laura Wolvaardt and Tazmin Brits chiselled out their team’s first half-centuries of the tournament when it mattered most.
It means Sune Luus’s side are the first South African team — male or female, junior or senior — to reach the final four of a major Icc event staged on their soil. They face an unbeaten and dangerous England team in Friday’s semi-final in Cape Town.

New Delhi, Jan 26 (Ians) England’s seam-bowling all-rounder Nat Sciver was named as Icc women’s Odi cricketer of the year for 2022. She becomes the second cricketer from England to have won the coveted award after wicketkeeper-batter Sarah Taylor won the honour in 2014.
Nat beat competition Australia wicketkeeper-batter Alyssa Healy, South Africa pacer Shabnim Ismail and New Zealand’s leg-spin all-rounder Amelia Kerr to win the award.
She had a 2022 to remember, amassing 833 runs at an average of 59.90 and at a strike-rate of 91.43, including smashing five half-centuries and two centuries to put further accolades on an already impressive playing resume.
The majority of those big scores came during the Women’s Odi World Cup, with Nat helping herself to a team-best 436 runs, including a career-best 148 not out off 121 balls in the final against Australia coming in a losing cause.

New Delhi, Jan 24 (Ians) Indian skipper Harmanpreet Kaur has been named the captain of the Icc Women’s Odi Team of the year for 2022 that also include her teammates, opener Smriti Mandhana and fast bowler Renuka Singh, the International Cricket Council said on Tuesday.

Mandhana added some consistency to her game during 2022 as she helped herself to a century and six half-centuries for the calendar year. She scored a magnificent 123 against the West Indies at the World Cup in New Zealand, but it was perhaps later on in the year in England where the 26-year-old flourished. Dubai, Oct 11 (Ians) India women’s team allrounder Deepti Sharma has moved to a career-best third position in the latest Icc T20I Rankings for bowlers with her exceptional performance in the Asia Cup, currently underway in Bangladesh.
The 25-year-old off-spinner picked up 3/27 against Pakistan, 2/13 against Bangladesh and 2/10 versus Thailand.
Sharma’s rise has seen her go past West Indies’ in-form star Hayley Matthews, South African pacer Shabnim Ismail and Australia’s Megan Schutt in the rankings. However, despite her fine form, two English players remain ahead of Sharma in the rankings, with Sarah Glenn and Sophie Ecclestone in second and first position respectively.
Sharma’s efforts have also seen her inch ahead of Ashleigh Gardner in the All-rounders’ Rankings, meaning the Indian now lies in a career-best third spot, behind Matthews and New Zealand cricketer Sophie Devine.
But arguably the most notable shift by an All-rounder has come from New Zealand’s Amelia Kerr.

But it was in her Test debut at Taunton where Issy sparkled the brightest, picking three wickets, including castling Laura Wolvaardt, one of the best batters in the cricketing circuit, which stood out the most.
Bowling fast has been a constant dominator in Issy’s life, something which she admits is in her nature. Called ‘Human Hurricane’ by her mother for doing everything at 100 miles an hour, Issy prefers bowling faster due to lots of hard work put into it over solving a rubik’s cube in just 33 seconds.
In a virtual interaction facilitated by the Sony Sports Network, Ians caught up with Issy, who is a part of England’s T20I side for the upcoming three-match series against India, where she spoke about all things fast bowling, Test debut, looking up to veteran fast bowler Katherine Brunt, prospect of a World Test Championship in women’s cricket and much more.
