As 20th Century Studios and director Dan Trachtenberg move forward with their plans to expand the Predator franchise following the success of the most recent instalment, Prey, the next project to feature the iconic extraterrestrial big game hunter has now been announced.
Deadline reports that Trachtenberg is set to helm a standalone Predator movie titled Badlands, with Elle Fanning on board to play the lead role. Plot details are still under wraps, but the story is believed to be set "sometime in the future."
Trachtenberg is said to have wanted to land an "established star" for this movie, and began taking meetings with talent. Insiders close to the project say, "Fanning is a fan of the franchise and once execs got wind of her interest, moved to set a meeting with her and Trachtenberg."
As for Prey, a direct sequel to the 2022 film is also happening, though details are still few and far between.

The Predator franchise gets a stealth prequel in the shape of this smartly written sci-fi thriller that has the dreadlocked alien super-hunter under-estimating a worthy new opponent. In terms of sequels, Prey is comfortably the best Predator film since the 1987 original, though admittedly, that’s not a particularly high bar to clear.
Directed by Dan Trachtenberg (whose franchise-tweaking credentials were previously showcased in 10 Cloverfield Lane), Prey is set in 1719, on the Great Plains, where young Comanche tribeswoman Naru (Amber Midthunder) is desperate to become a warrior, fighting alongside her brother Taabe (Dakota Beavers). She finally gets her chance when she’s invited to participate in the ritual of kühtaamia and hunt and kill a vicious animal, before...

As exciting and well-made as "Prey" was, it was a major bummer to see it relegated to a straight-to-streaming debut last year. But the film still has plenty going for it that rewards revisiting the action again and again. One of the biggest sources of its appeal, of course, comes from the shrewd casting of Amber Midthunder as our main hero Naru, and the choice to set the story in 1700s America, which allowed for an all-too-rare focus on an Indigenous tribe of Comanches. Drop a seemingly unstoppable Predator into the mix and, well, it's obvious why viewers responded so eagerly to director Dan Trachtenberg's latest effort.
With the 4K, Blu-ray, and DVD release once again putting the film in the news, /Film's Ethan Anderton recently had the chance to talk to the filmmaker about all the factors that went into making "Prey" as tense and thrilling as it turned out to be.

“It’s always a very rewarding experience for the audience when they can just watch and hear, and the scene can still have a very profound impact on the viewer,” reveals “Prey” editor Angela Catanzaro A.C.E. about immersing the audience in a visual and sonic adventure in which the human vs. alien death-match is presented with minimal dialogue. For our recent webchat she adds, “that’s always one of my favorite exercises to do as an editor. Jhane Myers, the producer of the thriller film ‘Prey’, shared that the team conducted extensive research with regard to the way of life and traditions of the Native American tribe of Comanche. The film presents a vicious and terrifying showdown between various predators with a gripping narrative and representation of the Comanche tribe.
Talking about the work it took to learn about the tribe, Jhane said, “We did extensive amounts of historical research and studied their customs and period-appropriate dialogue and sign language.”
She added: “The Comanches hunt and fight for survival. Everything that they hunt, like when they hunt a Buffalo, every part of that Buffalo is used. Nothing is wasted, and they’re also thankful for the spirit of that Buffalo that’s able to nourish them, clothe them, and is used for everything that they need in life.”

There is a period-piece level of realism that adorns the blood-soaked plot of "Prey," director Dan Trachtenberg's retelling of a familiar story about a certain solitary alien landing on Earth to hunt the populace. After all, one of the big reasons it distinguishes itself from previous "Predator" films is its setting. "Prey" abandons the increasingly dull modern and future set timelines of the sequels in favor of the Great Plains circa 1719. There the film follows the journey of Naru, a young Comanche woman trained as a healer with aspirations (and enough great skill) to be a hunter, as she's forced to protect her tribe from an onslaught of dangers.
Countless times throughout my first watch of "Prey," I kept thinking how much it reminded me of "The Revenant" — from its intimately visceral action sequences that put you at the center of the commotion to its brutal presentation of life on the frontier.

With every movie in the "Predator" franchise, each respective creative team has sought to revitalize and reinvent the eponymous creatures hunting our hapless group of humans in the hopes of living up to the original classic. Whether in the jungles of Vietnam or the streets of Los Angeles or otherworldly locations entirely, various protagonists have come up against the unstoppable might of the Yautja and only a very select few have ever walked away from those encounters — in part because of how different (subtly or otherwise) each antagonist has been carefully designed for each outing.
The villain in the shadows of director Dan Trachtenberg's "Prey" (portrayed by Dane Diliegro) is no exception, having undergone a radical visual shakeup to reflect the brand-new setting of the latest installment. Set in early 1700s America, the script written by Patrick Aison brings the action way back in time before technological advancements — for...

Dan Trachtenberg’s “Predator” prequel “Prey” has dominated social media buzz since debuting Aug. 5 on Hulu, and the horror-action film has since become the streamer’s biggest original film or TV launch in history. The movie has made instant stars out of Amber Midthunder and Dakota Beavers. But what about Dane Diliegro? If you don’t know his name, then you certainly know his work in “Prey” considering he’s the man underneath all that Predator makeup and prosthetics.

“Prey” has become the biggest premiere film on Hulu following its opening weekend.
20th Century Studios’ press release calls the film “the No. 1 premiere on Hulu to date, including all film and TV series debuts” as well as “the most watched film premiere on Star+ in Latin America and Disney+ under the Star Banner in all other territories, based on hours watched in the first three days of its release.”
Thirty-five years after Arnold Schwarzenegger starred in “Predator” as Major Alan “Dutch” Schaefer, “Prey” takes viewers 300 years in the past to follow Naru, a warrior in the Comanche Nation who encounters the Predator species.

20th Century Studios announced today that its Predator spinoff Prey has notched the #1 premiere on Hulu to date, across all of the streamer’s films and television series. The film also registered as the most-watched premiere on Star+ in Latin America and Disney+ under the Star Banner in all other territories, based on hours watched in the first three days of its release. Specific stats as to its viewership have not been disclosed.
Released on Hulu, Star+ and Disney+ this past Friday, August 5th, Prey is set in the Comanche Nation 300 years ago and tells the story of the fierce and highly skilled warrior, Naru (Legion‘s Amber Midthunder). The young woman has been raised in the shadow of some of the most legendary hunters who roam the Great Plains, so when danger threatens her camp, she sets out to protect her people. The direct-to-Hulu release of “Prey,” the action-thriller prequel to “Predator,” notched the most viewing hours ever on the Disney-owned streamer in its first three days — among all TV series and movies.
That would mean “Prey” had a bigger aggregate viewing-time total over three days than “The Kardashians,” which Hulu in April said was its biggest TV series premiere at the time.
Disney decided to forgo a theatrical release for 20th Century Studios’ “Prey,” which premiered Aug. 5 on on Hulu in the U.S., as well as on Disney’s Star+ in Latin America and Disney+ under the Star banner in all other territories.
Disney said “Prey” also was the most-watched film premiere on Star+ in Latin America and on Disney+ under the Star banner.

It’s good news all around for brand new Predator movie Prey, which has not only won over critics and franchise fans alike, but the film has also broken a new record over at Hulu.
We’ve learned today, “20th Century Studios’ highly acclaimed action-thriller Prey is the #1 premiere on Hulu to date, including all film and TV series debuts. Additionally, Prey is the most watched film premiere on Star+ in Latin America and Disney+ under the Star Banner in all other territories, based on hours watched in the first three days of its release.”
Meagan Navarro wrote in her 4-star review for Bloody Disgusting, “Prey surprises in how different yet similar it feels to the franchise’s origins. It feels right at home with the mythology of the Predator universe yet stretches the boundaries in tone and scale. Soaring spectacle meets intimate storytelling, delivering one of the most solid entries in the franchise yet.

Dan Trachtenberg’s “Prey,” out on Hulu now, feels like the freshest installment in the franchise since the original “Predator.”
A big part of that freshness comes from the concept, which is set 300 years before the events of the original film, in the Comanche Nation. An earlier version of the predator creature comes to earth, looking to face off against the planet’s deadliest hunter and finds a young female warrior named Naru, who has a ton of skill and something to prove. While the conceit is essentially the same as the first “Predator,” which saw Arnold Schwarzenegger lead a group of ruthless commandoes against the extraterrestrial hunter, it freshens things up with the new setting, the type of character the predator goes after and its general atmosphere.
Another way that it feels so new and fresh is because of the cast. Amber Midthunder, from “Legion,” plays Naru. She is...

In "Prey," director Dan Trachtenberg's new "Predator" prequel set in the 1700s, an imposing alien hunter comes face to face with multiple Comanche warriors. Most notably, there's Naru, played by Amber Midthunder; she's the film's protagonist, a scrappy underdog whose abilities and determination are constantly underestimated and seriously put to the test as she squares off against this colossal killer.
But the Predator also didn't anticipate encountering Naru's brother, Taabe, played by actor Dakota Beavers in his first credited acting role. Taabe is a pillar of his community, a leader, and a skilled fighter, and when it comes time for Taabe's inevitable confrontation with the...

The hook of the “Predator” franchise is one of the greats in sci-fi cinema: What if a big game hunter from another world came to Earth and set its sights on man? The concept boasts one of the most iconic cinematic monsters and inspired at least one classic film in John McTiernan’s 1987 original. But subsequent attempts to bring the “ugly motha” back — whether in the three sequels to McTiernan’s or the two crossovers with the “Alien” franchise — have failed to generate much excitement or capture the mix of tension and adrenaline that came with that first showdown.
‘The original film finally gets a worthwhile successor with Prey, a prequel from director Dan Trachtenberg (2016’s 10 Cloverfield Lane) that remembers what makes the big bad so scary and gives it a human adversary just as cunning and relentless. By relocating the story to the Great Plains in the 1700s,...

The Predator franchise is the ugly step-child of horror monster canon. Fans know about it, are aware of it, but don’t necessarily give it the credit it deserves. With the original film starring Arnold Schwarzenegger, the sequel with Danny Glover, a bunch of Alien vs. Predator crossover films, and an attempt at a reboot in 2018, it is the one franchise that lacks consistency. However, director Dan Trachtenberg gives the film a new edge by inserting the titular monster in an 18th-century setting to see how the people hold up against the advanced technology of the warrior creature.
Naru (Amber Midthunder) is a Comanche woman who aims to become a warrior by embarking on the “kühtaamia,” a rite of passage ritual where the hunter hunts the hunter who hunts them. Many in her tribe think she isn’t ready for the experience despite being somewhat of a skilled fighter. She...

This article contains Prey spoilers.
Who knew the secret to the Predator franchise’s future was to always go back in time? It seems director Dan Trachtenberg did! This weekend’s Prey is the culmination of years of passion, and years of planning, from the filmmaker who wrested the Predator movies away from their recent and failed experiments of franchise-building in the future. Instead the new movie finds a simple and potent blend of historical fiction and sci-fi fantasy when one of those aliens from above decides to go hunting on Comanche lands during the early 1700s.
It’s there we find the first good protagonist in this franchise since Arnold Schwarzenegger in 1987. But Amber Midthunder’s Naru is neither an Austrian Übermensch or a great warrior (yet) among her people. Rather she is a young woman determined to prove she is the latter, including to her older brother Taabe (Dakota Beavers). In the end,...

The year is 1719, the event is a hunt and all eyes are on Naru as she follows a trail of blood. All eyes except those of Naru herself. The hunter is instead looking toward a masked creature with dreads, fangs and a pair of claws. Yes, Predator is in town.

‘Prey’ Star Dakota Beavers Talks Upending Traditional Native Representation in His First Acting Role
“Prey” may be an entry in the “Predator” saga, but it stands on its own by taking on-screen representation to the next level. In his first-ever acting role, actor Dakota Beavers looks at the film as a step in the right direction for an industry that has been historically fraught with problems regarding the representation of Native American identities.
“Being Native is a part of who I am,” Beavers said. “Being able to represent Native people as accurately as you can with [producer] Jhane Myers — who is a Comanche woman herself — as the producer on this project, just meant the absolute world to me. So many times in the past, people are misrepresented or inaccurately depicted. You know, sometimes not on purpose, but just because there’s not a whole lot of Natives on the top of the film industry. So hopefully after this, that will change.”

Johnson. © 2022 20th Century Studios. All Rights Reserved. Although Prey is the fifth film in the Predator franchise, it definitely stands apart from the rest. Unlike the three sequels that preceded it, Prey is a prequel to the original Predator, taking place at least 250 years before the events of the first film. Being so far removed chronologically from the franchise’s other films gave director Dan Trachtenberg a lot of leeway to make Prey a different kind of Predator film. And though he says the movie stays true to the spirit of the series, Trachtenberg told us there’s a little more suspense in Prey, compared to the others. The infamous Predator gets a fresh update and an amazing new action hero (Amber Midthunder) in the prequel film out today. “Prey,” the fifth installment of the “Predator” franchise is now available to stream on Hulu. The new thriller is getting loads of love with a 92 critics score on Rotten Tomatoes (and 85 audience score).
Created by brothers Jim Thomas and John Thomas, and directed by Dan Trachtenberg, the film goes back to 1719 detailing an early days encounter with this iconic alien hunter. The hero of the story is a young warrior named Naru (Midthunder) who has absolutely enthralled audiences stalking the creepy beast lurking in the forests of the Comanche Nation.
What follows is an hour and a half of of genre-bending action that as Variety critic Owen Gleiberman wrote in his review, is inarguably the most socially conscious iteration of the story seen in the franchise.

Prey is the fifth installment in the Predator franchise (and seventh if you count the two Alien vs. Predator films). It’s also easily the third best in the series by default, following the original Predator and 2010’s underrated Predators. The bar is, admittedly, fairly low for this series, which is marked by pretty unwatchable entries like Shane Black’s 2018 The Predator and 1990’s Predator 2 (although some Den of Geek staff keep threatening to write a re-appreciation of the latter). Nevertheless, we’re pleased to say that Prey takes an approach that is both fresh and back to basics with this material, making a solid, suspenseful thriller while scaling back any ambitions that have sunk past films.
For one thing, Prey takes the franchise back to nature, in this case a forest and plains, which is where it belongs. The best Predator films work in such an environment, whether...

The first tribal pipe ceremony that filmmaker Dan Trachtenberg participated in took him by surprise. Rather than occurring out on location, and in the wilderness where much of his upcoming Predator reimagining, Prey, takes place, it was during the day before principal photography started on Stoney Nakoda Nation lands that a small group of filmmakers were invited to participate in a ritual with local Indigenous leaders.
“It was profound in that it wasn’t out in the camp we had set up,” Trachtenberg explains to Den of Geek. “It was just in an office, and it was a very moving experience where everyone approached the elders and had very specific secret things happen that not everyone could hear. It was deeply emotional.”

For decades “Predator” has been a black sheep in the monster-movie family. The creature was instantly iconic, but the franchise has always struggled to capitalize on the original classic film. At their best, the “Predator” sequels have been entertaining big-bad-beast yarns but at their worst — which is 60 of the time — they’ve been ill-conceived, shoddily produced and more than a little embarrassing.
Dan Trachtenberg’s “Prey” is the sort of shot in the arm every long-running movie series dreams of. It goes back to basics, reminding us of what made the central concept so captivating in the first place while placing it in a new and exciting framework. “Prey” deserves the ultimate horror sequel compliment: If none of the other films existed, it wouldn’t just stand alone — it’s good enough to spawn a franchise by itself.

“Prey,” a prequel in the “Predator” series, stands as proof that Hollywood today can make a socially conscious movie out of anything. I offer an advance apology to fans of this dogged franchise when I say that over the last 35 years, it would be hard to find a strain of sci-fi action cinema more trashy or degraded than the “Predator” films. The original “Predator,” directed by John McTiernan in 1987 (the year before he made “Die Hard”), was a what-are-we-going-to-do-with-Arnold-this-time? vintage-’80s Schwarzenegger combat showdown, and in its overwrought and derivative way it was reasonably well-made. The first sequel, released in 1990, was the pits, but you could already perceive the rationale of the executives. They thought they’d grabbed “the next “Alien'” by the tail.
Sorry, but the Predator was no Alien. He was a monster with more or less one trick — a cloak of semi-invisibility — and with a half-scary,...

There’s the overt stuff (keep your eyes peeled for a gun that pops up many decades later in the series’ timeline) and the tropes, but .
Turns out, even the most wrung-out IP — we’re talking about a series that was eventually forced to crossover with another action-centric alien film, to deeply stupid results — can still tap into truly smart new ideas.
Set on the Great Plains in the fall of 1719, “Prey” picks up at a fraught time in American history. The Comanche Nation may still rule this slice of prairie, plains, and forest, but just miles away is a group of money-hungry French fur trappers pillaging their way through the country’s wildlife. Within the tribe,...

The Predator franchise has been a remarkable exercise in longevity despite diminishing returns for 35 years. As such, a scaled-down and retitled prequel reduced to streaming fodder seems an unsurprising move at this point––or at least the only feasible one. The tragic irony is that Prey, a Dan Trachtenberg-directed addition set 300 years ago, is the first franchise entry that is as good (and at times a mite better) than the original.
Part of that success is a general boiling-off of any extraneous mythology or overwrought concepts. Here, much like Arnold Schwarzenegger’s 1987 close encounter, Prey relishes the simplicity of an indefatigable hunter, their quarry, and the wilderness in-between. In the Comanche Nation circa 1719 we’re introduced to Naru (Amber Midthunder), a skilled hunter hellbent on proving herself to the rest of her camp by tracking and killing a mysterious beast stalking the wilderness nearby. In addition to an impeccably trained dog,...

There’s a reason that the title of the new Predator film doesn’t contain the word “Predator.”
It’s not because there isn’t a fearsome alien on hand who hunts down humans and other species for the sheer enjoyment of it. Rather, it’s that this fifth entry in the long-running franchise (not counting the Alien vs. Predator entries, discuss) differs rather dramatically from its predecessors. For one thing, it has a heroine instead of a hero, who happens to be a young Indigenous woman. For another, the story takes place some 300 years ago in the Great Plains, so the most formidable high-tech human weaponry on display are the muskets wielded by French fur trappers. Despite all this, Prey, premiering domestically on Hulu, winds up being one of the more formidable installments in the series.

The Predator franchise continues when Prey slithers onto screens this Friday, August 5 on Hulu. The prequel — set 300 years ago in the Comanche Nation — stars Amber Midthunder as a skilled warrior named Naru who fights to save her people from one of the first highly-evolved Predators to land on Earth. Prey features a cast full of Native American and First Nation actors, making history as the first feature film to receive a full Comanche language dub. English and Comanche dialogue are both featured throughout Prey, but the full Comanche dub is a first for the industry. Director Dan Trachtenberg, producer Jhane Myers, and stars Midthunder, Dakota Beavers (Taabe), and Dane Diliegro (the Predator) gave a peek into the landmark movie to Andrea Towers at the TV Insider and TV Guide Magazine studio, sponsored by Hollywood unBranded during San Diego Comic-Con 2022. Myers is a Comanche/Blackfeet producer dedicated to increasing the visibility...
