Renowned three-time Oscar-winning editor Walter Murch — known for films including Apocalypse Now, The Godfather Part II and The English Patient — and respected documentary editor Kate Amend — who cut Academy Award-winning docs Into the Arms of Strangers and The Long Way Home — will receive career achievement awards at the 74th American Cinema Editors Eddie Awards.
During the ceremony, which will be held March 3 at UCLA’s Royce Hall, Ace will also honor Stephen Lovejoy with its Heritage Award for his commitment to advancing the image of the film editor and dedication to the organization.
Murch’s legendary 55-year career as a film editor, sound designer, writer and director began in 1969 when he worked on the sound for Francis Ford Coppola’s The Rain People. His credits include American Graffiti and The Godfather Part II, and he won his first Oscar for the sound in Apocalypse Now, for which he was also nominated as an editor.

Pamela Shamshiri rocked the design world as one of the four founding partners of Commune, eventually leaving to found Studio Shamshiri, alongside her brother Ramin, in 2016. Since founding, Studio Shamshiri has tackled projects around the globe, ranging from legacy homes to boutique hotels, with a strong, narrative-driven sensibility that seamlessly merges their love of the past with their profound understanding of the needs of modern life. They’ve designed everything from celebrity houses (for clients including Anne Hathaway) to the 67-room Maison de la Luz hotel, located in a historic 1908 building in New Orleans. The Hollywood Reporter sat down with Pamela to discuss the studio’s recently released and highly recommended monograph, Shamshiri: Interiors (Rizzoli).

“Squid Game” has taken Netflix by a storm. This Korean survival drama ranked number one in 90 countries as of last week. Major news outlets like CNN and Wall Street Journal have raved on about it, as dalgona memes have flooded social media. Netflix CEO Ted Santos even admits that this might even become one of the Ott platform’s “biggest shows ever” — as it is well on its way to surpass “Bridgerton”’s viewership of 82 million.
It’s almost ironic to think about how these two shows are so extraordinarily popular – but are also just so different. While “Bridgerton” paints a picture of an elite family in Regency-era England, “Squid Game” explores the underworld of the indebted. Here, Lee Jung-jae stars as Seong Gi-hun, an unlikeable divorcee. He treats his mother – who houses and feeds him – with disrespect; he lies to his estranged daughter on her birthday; and, not to mention,...

Switzerland’s Rita Productions, producer of Academy Award-nominated “My Life as a Courgette,” is re-teaming with France’s Silex Films, the company behind France Televisions’ Slash hit series “Stalk,” to develop “Witch!” (“Sorciere!”).

The doc-feature is being written by TV creator Thalia Rebinsky whose “Nina” is now in its sixth season on France 2, and documentarian Eve Minault, director for French-German public broadcaster Arte of the prescient “Crash: Are You Ready for the Next Crisis?”

Amazon Studios is facing a lawsuit over the use of shots in “Suspiria” that allegedly bear similarities to works by Cuban-American artist Ana Mendieta. The Estate of Ana Mendieta sued the studio on Thursday, September 27, accusing “Suspiria” of borrowing from the late artist’s work, Variety reports.
The lawsuit claims the “Suspiria” teaser trailer, released on June 4, featured two shots influenced by Mendieta’s 1970’s works “Rape Scene” and “Untitled.” One shot showed a woman’s hands bound with rope (which the lawsuit says is inspired by “Rape Scene”) and the other depicted the bloody silhouette of a body on a sheet (allegedly inspired by “Silueta Series”).
The Estate of Ana Mendieta sent a cease and desist letter to Amazon in July. The studio pulled the teaser trailer from online and the lawsuit states the two shots are not included in the theatrical release. However, the estate claims there are...

I’m dedicating a series of articles to women who contributed so much during their lives for the benefit of ours and have received very little reward or recognition for it. I call it Behind Him. I found inspiration in Judy Chicago’s The Dinner Party, an important icon of 1970s feminist art and a milestone in 20th Century art. This permanent installation at the Brooklyn Museum comprises a massive ceremonial banquet, arranged on a triangular table with a total of thirty-nine place settings, each commemorating an important woman from history. The names of another 999 women are inscribed in gold on.

The top two comments on Brad Pitt's surreal Chanel N°5 ad are "Nothing he is saying means anything" and "Go home, Brad Pitt, you're drunk." The super-serious black and white ad may not be selling much perfume, but it has inspired a hilarious parody from "Rebels in Paradise," an upcoming art exhibition at Art Basel Miami.
The video contains a scruffy gentleman delivering ridiculous sentence fragments, including our personal favorite: "Mezcal up to my ears... Great art takes over..." The teaser ends with a perfume bottle labeled "Bungalo N°5, Delano Hotel, Miami" — the locale of the upcoming exhibition.
Where am I? — Bungalo N°5 from Nyehaus on Vimeo.
The press release for "Rebels in Paradise" is equally awesome, playing off the overblown language and melodrama that us art writers love to overuse. It begins:

The weather in New York may delay this afternoon's scheduled conversation with David Cronenberg at the Museum of the Moving Image, but as of this writing, it's still on for 2 pm, i.e., in just a few hours. Chief Curator David Schwartz plans to chat with Cronenberg about "the themes and motifs of his films, from his early experimental works and horror films to the accomplished, adventurous adaptations of recent years." And yes, there will be clips.
The conversation launches a retrospective that'll run through February 12, the occasion of two new pieces at Moving Image Source: "Of course, as Cronenberg and monster movies show, it's usually the body that thinks before the mind," writes Gina Telaroli, introducing her video essay. "So with a found-footage, montage-movie, I found myself with the same issues of any shit-grade horror filmmaker collapsing traditional hierarchy of thought/action, mind/body, inside/outside, in which the...

The ladies talk it over in !Women Art Revolution.
The 2010 documentary film !Women Art Revolution illuminates the under-explored feminist art movement through conversations, observations, archival footage and works of visionary artists, historians, curators and critics.
Starting from its roots in 1960s antiwar and civil rights protests, !Women Art Revolution details developments in women’s art through the 1970s and explores how the determination of the the pioneering artists of the time resulted in what is now widely regarded as one of the more significant art movements of the late 20th century.
The film was directed by artist/filmmaker Lynn Hershman Leeson (Teknolust), who tapped her archive of some 40-plus years of interviews she conducted with her contemporaries and molded then into a feature-length portrait.
Popping up in the movie are such female artists as Miranda July (The Future), The Guerilla Girls, Yvonne Rainer,...

The world of fine arts is even more male-dominated than the world of popular arts. Although both trivialize the work of women, there are more respected women working in creative departments of film, television, even comics than there are in the better galleries and museums.
As if to prove the point, there is a new graphic novel from the Feminist Press, Who Is Ana Mendieta? Ana Mendieta was a Cuban-born artist best known for her earthworks, which combined her cultural heritage, her body, and specific sites. And, to the broader public, she is best known for her marriage to artist Carl Andre and her death under questionable circumstances.
This book is part of Blind Spot, a series of graphic novels from Feminist Press, which, according to their press release, “reconstruct these cultural biographies to tell a different story.”
Who Is Ana Mendiata? uses the graphic novel medium to full effect.

How many female artists can you name? Let’s try for three: Frida Kahlo — yeah, we all know her; Georgia O’Keeffe — good one … Any others? That is the very first question posed in Lynn Hershman-Leeson’s documentary “!Women Art Revolution.” By the end of it, you may be able to not only name artists like Judy Chicago, Carolee Schneemann and the Guerrilla Girls but also describe their work.
“!Women Art Revolution” follows a very basic format: talking heads that lead into video clips and back to talking heads again. Hershman-Leeson proudly states several times throughout the film that she has been compiling these interviews since the early 1960s when the feminist (art) movement began, and her effort and love of the project shows. “!Women Art Revolution” is, as she admits throughout, a compilation of her own art.

Toronto -- Tribeca may have offered a sneak peek, but the Toronto International Film Festival has the world premiere of Alex Gibney's "Client 9: The Rise and Fall of Eliot Spitzer" from Magnolia Pictures.
Oscar-winning Gibney's latest documentary about the sex scandal that enveloped the former New York governor, and which includes an on-camera interview with Spitzer and some of the players that brought about his political downfall, was billed as a "work-in-progress" at Tribeca.
Now Toronto gets Gibney's finished doc ahead of a Nov. 5 theatrical release, and Spitzer getting a CNN primetime newshow gig this fall alongside Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Kathleen Parker.
"Client 9" also figured Wednesday among 25 factual films unveiled by fest organizers as part of Toronto's Real to Reel, Masters and Sprockets Family Zone sidebars.
