For those who took a look at Andrew McCarthy’s revisit with his Brat Pack brethren with the new Hulu documentary Brats, some may have noticed that a few key names did not make an appearance. Judd Nelson and Molly Ringwald were revealed to have declined involvement with the film. However, one name that was even neglected to get mentioned was Anthony Michael Hall. Hall (who has recently given his endorsements to remakes of his 80s classics Weird Science and The Breakfast Club) spoke with The Wrap, where he shed some light on his absence from the doc.
When asked if McCarthy had called him up for an appearance, Hall explained, “He did. And I can go on record saying, I politely declined because I’m always making new stuff and always moving forward and looking ahead. So that was my own impetus for why I chose not to be a part of that.

Science and technology have advanced significantly since the 80s. With things like Bluetooth technology, 3D printing, VR and Ar goggles, and the scary progression of AI, science could also get a lot weirder. And one person who wholeheartedly endorses a potential exploration into these possibilities with in a new film is Anthony Michael Hall. Hall, who capitalized on his awkward years in movies like The Breakfast Club and Sixteen Candles, had recently given his seal of approval to the notion that his classic film Weird Science could potentially receive a remake.
ScreenRant reports on Hall speaking about this topic in an interview with Inverse as he promotes his upcoming Netflix movie with Jessica Alba, Trigger Warning. While the idea of a remake has probably been thrown around in the past, Hall says he isn’t aware of any immediate plans for one. However, he mentions that he’s also not opposed to one.

Life moves pretty fast. It moves a lot slower when you’re watching the painfully terrible intro of the equally terrible Ferris Bueller sitcom.
On paper, you can see why Paramount was eager to turn their 1986 hit teen comedy Ferris Bueller’s Day Off into an at least watchable sitcom centered around the title character. After all, Matthew Broderick’s performance as the devilishly charming delinquent who spends a sick day enjoying all the most iconic sights and sounds of Chicago perfectly captured a cultural moment during director John Hughes’ legendary run of classic teen movies set and shot in and around the Windy City.
However, the turd that Paramount Television squeezed out in 1990 was neither watchable nor iconic — in fact, the ABC show Ferris Bueller was so bad and so unpopular that the network ended up canceling the abomination in the middle of its first season.

Andrew McCarthy said he credits his Pretty in Pink co-star Molly Ringwald for getting his role in the 1986 iconic film.
The actor, whose new Hulu documentary Brats dropped on Thursday, recently looked back at John Hughes’ teen rom-com and how he got cast as heartthrob Blane McDonnagh.
“That part was written for a square-jawed, big, hunky, you know, quarterback and Molly got me that part,” McCarthy recalled to Entertainment Tonight. “I auditioned and Molly said, ‘Oh, that’s who I would fall for. He’s dreamy. He’s poetic.’ And so John Hughes went, ‘Really? That wimp?'”
The Resident actor continued, “He listened to Molly, which is what John did. John honored, not just on screen but in real life, John listened and respected young people. So, I was miscast in a way. I made what could [have] been a jerk have some sensitivity, so there was some empathy towards him.

At times, watching Brats is like watching a high school reunion, if the high schoolers in question frequented the Sunset Strip in the 1980s and the theater teacher was John Hughes.
In the doc, director Andrew McCarthy asks members of the Brat Pack to reflect on and unpack what it meant to be a part of one of Hollywood’s most exclusive clubs — like the Frank Sinatra-fronted Rat Pack before them. Andrew McCarthy, creator of the Hulu documentary Brats, has Molly Ringwald to thank for his breakout role in Pretty in Pink. Here’s how she pushed for McCarthy to get the signature role over another well-known actor.
Molly Ringwald campaigned for Andrew McCarthy to get a ‘Pretty in Pink’ role
Molly Ringwald had signed on to star in Pretty in Pink as Andie. The 1986 film was written specifically for her by John Hughes. Previously, Ringwald starred in Hughes’ films Sixteen Candles and The Breakfast Club.
However, while the the role of Andie’s love interest, Blaine, was originally set to be offered to Charlie Sheen, Ringwald campaigned hard for McCarthy to get the role. In the book You Couldn’t Ignore Me If You Tried, Ringwald convinced the filmmaker to hire Andrew McCarthy, whose previous credits include the films Class, Heaven Help Us, and St. Elmo’s Fire. Neil Berkley’s Group Therapy is a poignant, hilarious and moving exploration of the intersections between comedy, grief and mental illness. Starring a stellar cast of comedians including Neil Patrick Harris, Gary Gulman, Nicole Byer, Mike Birbiglia, London Hughes, Tig Notaro and Atsuko Okatsuka, the film delves into the ways these performers use humor as a coping mechanism and a form of catharsis.
The film kicks off with a darkly comedic clip of George Carlin, setting the tone by discussing suicide and mental health statistics in America. This seamlessly transitions into clips of various comedians opening up about their struggles with mental illness, the medications they take, and the traumas they’ve endured. It’s a stark yet effective way to frame the narrative, immediately drawing viewers into the raw and unfiltered realities these comedians face. Each comedian in the film shares their journey of developing their unique sense of humor,...

Michelle Stafford Won The Daytime Emmys Outstanding Lead Actress
Michelle Stafford, who plays Phyllis Summers on The Young and the Restless, was shocked by her triumph. Stafford won for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series.
While Stafford is a phenomenal actress, she was up against some serious competition with Finola Hughes, who plays Anna Devane on General Hospital, and Cynthia Watros, who plays Nina Reeves on General Hospital.

Image Source: Universal Picture Home Entertainment In the 1980s, writer/director John Hughes‘ films became a part of movie pop culture. The films defined a young generation of audiences, relating to the teen angst and issues explored in the movies. Along with those movies, they also turned Molly Ringwald into a movie star. Ringwald worked with Hughes on three films, Sixteen Candles, The Breakfast Club, and Pretty in Pink (Hughes wrote it). Their collaboration was beloved. Each of these films had an impact on not only audiences but on Ringwald personally and professionally. Hughes’ impact is still felt today, with new audiences being introduced to the films even more than three decades after they were released. Speaking at The Breakfast Club Reunion Panel at Steely Con, Ringwald recalled making the iconic 1980s teen movie with Hughes and the very special work relationship they had. Jack Brett Anderson is set to play the male lead in upcoming feature film “The Insect Life.”
The project marks the feature debut of writer/director James Hughes and his production banner Sunset Aperture. Hughes previously directed various award-winning shorts starring the likes of Georgina Campbell and Tobias Menzies.
“The Insect Life” is set to tell the emotional story of two lost souls — Levi and Céleste — who both suffer from mental health issues and romantically cling to one another until addiction tears them apart into two parallel journeys of metamorphosis that contrast their chances of survival. Anderson will play Levi, the first confirmed casting on the film.
“There are few times in life when you read a script that completely immerses you like ‘The Insect Life,’ and it is visually stunning,” Anderson said in a statement. “Levi and Céleste, for me, are like the shining of one soul and in turn,...

With a new month comes many new choices for Netflix viewers, and three of the choices stand out. June looks excellent on Netflix.
There is something for everyone and every situation, including Detective Pikachu and The Lego Movie for kids, The Divergent Movie for sci-fi fans, and the Conjuring trilogy for horror fans.
Another good option is the Godzilla Minus One movie, which, as Monsters and Critics reported, just dropped on Netflix.
All those are good options, but three top picks should not be missed: one for drama fans, a throwback for sci-fi fans, and one of the best coming-of-age films ever made.
The first is a Spanish offering named Raising Voices. It is an all-too-familiar tale of sexual assault that immediately grips viewers. Raising Voices, Episode 1, is streaming on Netflix today and should not be missed.
The caption on the trailer reads, “When a 17-year-old reports a sexual assault at her high school,...

Spoiler Alert: The following reveals major plot points from ABC’s Station 19 series finale.
After 7 seasons, the time has finally come to say goodbye to Seattle’s hardest-working firefighters on ABC’s Station 19. As they say, all good things must come to an end. But, thanks to some gifts left behind in the finale by showrunners Peter Paige and Zoanne Clack and the writers, fans can expand on the firefighters’ stories well beyond tonight.
The episode titled “One Last Time” continues the story from last week’s episode as Station 19 is battling a raging wildfire targeting Seattle. Everyone is in danger but they’re keeping cool heads and working together to protect anyone else from getting hurt. In a particularly intense scene, the team has to take cover when a firestorm threatens everyone’s lives quickly. They get under aluminum fire shelters that they pull over themselves like a blanket.

While Oppenheimer was Christopher Nolan’s first biographical drama to hit the big screens, this wasn’t the Oscar-winner’s first time penning a script surrounding a real-life figure. Before changing the superhero landscape with The Dark Knight, the director had plans to make a biopic about the American aerospace engineer Howard Hughes, for which he even wrote a script.
But as the story goes, Nolan’s passion project never materialized as before the director could make his pitch, Martin Scorsese was already working on Hughes’ biopic, The Aviator. However, it wasn’t all in vain for Nolan, as his experience working on the script for his Howard Hughes biopic came in handy while penning Oppenheimer.
The Unmade Biopic Made Christopher Nolan’s Experience Penning Oppenheimer Easier A still from The Aviator | Warner Bros.
Speaking of the unmade biopic, Christopher Nolan deemed his script for the canned project the best he’d ever written.

If you’re still in Shōgun withdrawal, you can look forward to Peacock’s own take on a lavish historical epic this summer. Robert Rodat (Saving Private Ryan) is behind the small-screen adaptation of Those About to Die, Daniel P. Mannix’s book of the same name, which was also the inspiration for Ridley Scott and David Franzioni’s Gladiator.
This new period drama will come racing to our screens on July 18, with the decline of the Roman Empire as its backdrop. Peacock released a teaser for the series, starring Anthony Hopkins, Tom Hughes, and Iwan Rheon, among others, last month. And the streamer is now moving full speed ahead on promo with new images, including closer looks at the Roman Emperor Flavius Vespasian (Hopkins), who founded the Flavian dynasty; Titus (Hughes), Flavius’ son and successor; and games master Tenax.

The Voice’s 26th season is going to the Dogg.
NBC announced at its upfront presentation Monday that Snoop Dogg and Michael Bublé will join the singing competition as coaches for its 26th season in the fall. Reba McEntire and Gwen Stefani will return to the show, McEntire for her third edition of the show and Stefani for her eighth.
Both Snoop and Bublé have appeared on The Voice in the past: Snoop Dogg served as a “mega mentor” in the show’s 20th season, and Bublé was an adviser to Blake Shelton’s team back in season three.
McEntire’s return means that she’ll bookend NBC’s weeknight schedule in the fall, with The Voice on Mondays and Tuesdays and Happy’s Place, a comedy series starring the multiple Grammy, CMA and ACM award winner, set for Fridays.
The Voice is one of several collaborations between NBCUniversal and Snoop Dogg in the near future.

“When I was just a little girl I asked my mother, what will I be? Will I be pretty? Will I be rich? Here’s what she said to me: Qué será, será. Whatever will be, will be”
The opening of Michael Lehmann’s Heathers begins with a dreamy cover of a familiar song. Angelic voices ask a mother to predict the future only to be met with an infuriating response: “whatever will be, will be.” Her answer is most likely intended to present a life of limitless possibility, but as the introduction to a film devoid of competent parents, it feels like a noncommittal platitude. Heathers is filled with teenagers looking for guidance only to be let down by one adult after another. Gen Xers and elder millennials may have glamorized the outlandish fashion and creative slang while drooling over a smoking hot killer couple, but the violent film now packs an ominous punch.

Over the past couple of decades, John Hughes’ Sixteen Candles has been seen in a new light, with many calling out its portrayal of foreign exchange student Long Duk Dong, played by Gedde Watanabe, as racist. For the 40th anniversary of the 1984 classic, Watanabe reflected on the role in an interview with People magazine where he said that he initially didn’t think about whether the character was offensive.
At the time of playing the character, Watanabe says, he was just happy to get his first big paycheck. “Frankly I was like, this is a good job, and I’m going to get paid more doing one week in this movie than I did all the years I was in the theater,” he said.
As for whether he had any hesitations on taking on the role as Long Duk Dong, Watanabe noted, “It didn’t really occur to me that it was a stereotype,...

This holiday season is one where the offspring of iconic Hollywood families come together, apparently.
“Christmas Eve in Miller’s Point,” which is set to debut in the Director’s Fortnight at Cannes, stars Francesca Scorsese and Sawyer Spielberg, two film stars in their own rite who hail from respective auteurs Martin Scorsese and Steven Spielberg.
Decade-plus indie staple Michael Cera leads the latest feature directed by Tyler Taormina; Cera also produces the ensemble family dramedy that marks Taormina’s follow-up to his 2019 coming-of-age comedy “Ham on Rye.”
Set during one Christmas Eve, a family gathers for what could be the last holiday in their ancestral home. As the night wears on and generational tensions arise, one of the teenagers sneaks out with her friends to claim the wintry suburb for her own, per the official synopsis. Cera is seen donning a cop uniform in one of the first look images,...

Gedde Watanabe has enjoyed a lengthy career in Hollywood. The actor’s big break was the 1984 film “Sixteen Candles,” in which he played foreign exchange student “Long Duk Dong.” While Watanabe’s line “What’s happenin’, hot stuff?” is still often quoted, the character himself relied on a lot of racist stereotypes, including his name — something Watanabe now says he didn’t see at the time.
“Frankly I was like, this is a good job, and I’m going to get paid more doing one week in this movie that I did [than] for all the years I was in the theater,” the actor told People. “It didn’t really occur to me that it was a stereotype, because there wasn’t really anything out there for Asian actors at the time. It was just so scarce. So I didn’t think it was stereotypical or racist. Isn’t that weird?...

It’s been four decades since Samantha Baker bemoaned the fact that everyone had forgotten her 16th birthday amid the chaos caused by her wacky sister’s impending nuptials. On May 4, 1984, “Sixteen Candles” was released, the success of which prompted a string of hits by filmmaker John Hughes, launched the careers of several performers and inspired the glory years of teen movies in the 1980s. Read on for more about the “Sixteen Candles” 40th anniversary.
After the success of two movies based on screenplays he had written, “Mr. Mom” and “National Lampoon’s Vacation” (1983), Hughes was given the opportunity to direct one of his scripts. Up to this point, “teen movies” had largely evolved from cautionary “rebellion” films in the 1950s to the beach party films of the 1960s to slasher films of the 1970s to sex comedies in the early 1980s. Hughes wrote a script that truly reflected the life of an average teen,...

“General Hospital” star Finola Hughes admitted to Soap Opera Digest that she’s “notoriously bad about putting together a reel” for Daytime Emmy consideration. But with help from a producer she entered scenes from “a few months ago where I accidentally shot a 15-year-old because it was Halloween and I didn’t recognize them, and that storyline hit Anna hard because she’s law enforcement and that’s the last thing you want to be doing.” Will that finally win her her second Emmy after a long, long wait?

The star of Disney+’s Shardlake has addressed having a different disability to the character he portrays in the C.J. Sansom adaptation, which launches today.
Arthur Hughes, who was the first person with a disability to portray Richard III for the Royal Shakespeare Company, stressed that Shardlake was always going to have a disabled lead – whether him or another actor – coming as debate rages over authentic representation in TV and film.
Hughes has radial dysplasia in his right arm, while the titular Matthew Shardlake is a crime-solving barrister with scoliosis.
Hughes said at a London screening: “I was aware that Shardlake has a disability that is not my own, and I wanted to find a level of truth in what I was doing and not necessarily affecting something that was not my own experience. We look at hunchbacks in film, and they’re often mad, kind of grotesque caricature kind of things,...

Out of battery. Out of signal. Stamped underfoot. Dropped into drains. Crime writers have found inventive ways to remove suspense-killing mobile phones from their stories, but no solution is as thorough as Cj Sansom’s. By setting his murder mysteries in Tudor times, Sansom’s 16th century lawyer Matthew Shardlake has to investigate without mobiles, forensics or DNA databases, armed with only his mind and principles. Or rather: his mind, principles, and the fearful reputation of his boss Thomas Cromwell whose name Shardlake draws “like a sword”.
This four-part historical crime drama is adapted from the first of Sansom’s seven Shardlake novels by Stephen Butchard, the writer who so successfully translated Bernard Cornwell’s Saxon Stories to the screen in The Last Kingdom. If it lands well with an audience, there’s hope of many more series, each one a self-contained mystery for ‘the Tudor Morse’ to solve against...

Following her personal essay in Glamour, Sophia Bush reflected on her decision to share insight into her private life.
In her essay, Bush revealed what led to her split from Grant Hughes and confirmed her relationship with Ashlyn Harris. The One Tree Hill alum shared that by changing the course of her life and making the difficult decision to divorce Hughes and come out as queer, she found true happiness.
“I turned 41 last summer, amid all of this, and I heard the words I was saying to my best friend as they came out of my mouth. ‘I feel like this is my first birthday,’ I told her. This year was my very first birthday,” Bush wrote in her Glamour piece.
Days after her essay was published, Bush explained what she meant with her birthday realization in an Instagram post shared on Sunday. “I feel like last summer I had my very first birthday.

Having grown up in a religious family, Christian movie night was something that happened a lot more often than I care to admit. However, back when I was a teenager, my parents showed up one night with an unusually cool-looking DVD of a movie that had been recommended to them by a church leader. Curious to see what new kind of evangelical propaganda my parents had rented this time, I proceeded to watch the film with them expecting a heavy-handed snoozefest.
To my surprise, I was a few minutes in when Denzel Washington proceeded to dismember a band of cannibal raiders when I realized that this was in fact a real movie. My mom was horrified by the flick’s extreme violence and dark subject matter, but I instantly became a fan of the Hughes Brothers’ faith-based 2010 thriller, The Book of Eli. And with the film’s atomic apocalypse having...

“Shardlake” is a new live-action ‘Tudor England’ era, 4-part drama series, directed by Justin Chadwick, following the adventures of the hunchbacked lawyer/detective ‘Matthew Shardlake’ (Arthur Hughes) co-starring Sean Bean as ‘Thomas Cromwell’, streaming May 1, 1023 on Hulu:
“…drenched in mystery, suspense, and deception, this four-part drama is an eerie whodunnit adventure set in 16th century England during the dissolution of the monasteries.
“The sheltered life of ‘Shardlake’ (Hughes) as a lawyer is turned upside down when Cromwell (Bean) instructs him to investigate the murder of one of his commissioners at a monastery in the remote town of Scarnsea.
“The commissioner was gathering evidence to close the monastery, and it is now imperative for Cromwell’s own political survival that Shardlake solve the murder and closes the monastery.
“As failure is not an option, Cromwell insists Shardlake be accompanied by ‘Jack Barak’ (Anthony Boyle) to Scarnsea, where the duo are met with hostility,...

In John Hughes' 1985 teen dramedy "The Breakfast Club," five teenagers are locked in their school library on a Saturday as punishment for a variety of on-campus transgressions. The teens are lucky that their cruel headmaster, Mr. Vernon (Paul Gleason), isn't entirely attentive, as his periodic absences allow them to talk, bond, and come to understand their prejudices about each other. By the end of the day, the five teens -- Andrew, Claire, Brian, Allison, and John -- may have become friends. More than anything, they understand a lot more about who they are.
John Bender (Judd Nelson) is the troublemaker of the group, and he will reveal his uncaring attitude comes quite directly from having an abusive father. He also deflects a lot of negativity through humor, and it will be he who suggests the other four learn how liberating it is to deliberately break rules. Joe Rogan has some choice words for TV’s most-watched daytime talk show.
In a new episode of his “Joe Rogan Experience” podcast, the host bonded with author and journalist Coleman Hughes over the latter’s tense appearance on “The View.”
“It is the show that people love to hate,” Rogan said. “They get so much hate-watching … and viral clips of them saying ridiculous things. It is a rabies-infested hen house.”
Hughes visited “The View” on March 28 to promote his book “The End of Race Politics: Arguments for a Colorblind America” and sparred with Sunny Hostin over racial politics and how to best address poverty in America. Hughes and Hostin disagreed over Martin Luther King Jr.’s arguments in his 1964 book “Why We Can’t Wait,” and whether policy should be targeted toward socioeconomic status versus race.
