Taylor Swift‘s “experiment” to release a 2-hour-48-minute concert movie based on her “Eras” tour turned out to be quite a boon for the box office in a slower fall season. Read on for the weekend box office report.
“Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour” was announced in late August, shortly after the five L.A. concerts that were filmed for the movie, directed by Sam Wrench. Theater chain AMC took the distribution rights, working with Variance to get it into other theaters, with it ultimately ending up in 3,855 theaters, including 377 IMAX screens.
The movie’s weekend began with $2.8 million in last-minute Thursday previews, only announced by Swift on Wednesday night at her L.A. premiere with tickets going on sale Thursday morning. The calendar says that we’re still in September, which means there’s still roughly half a year until the 2024 Academy Awards.
