In the "Star Trek: Strange New Worlds" episode "As Astra per Aspera", Commander Chin-Riley (Rebecca Romijn) faces a court-martial for lying on her Starfleet Academy application. She claimed to be a human, but was, in fact, a genetically enhanced Illyrian. Thanks to the disastrous, long-ago Eugenics Wars, genetic tinkering is strictly verboten in the world of "Star Trek." As such, lying about your genes is a particularly grievous offense. Captain Pike (Anson Mount), wanting to help his first officer, seeks out the legal aid of Neera Ketoul (Yetide Badaki), an Illyrian defense lawyer who will be brave enough to stand up to Starfleet's prosecution. Ketoul was also a childhood friend of Chin-Riley, and they have some bad blood about the latter's need to hide here identity to join Starfleet.
Neera Ketoul is an interesting character for "Star Trek," as she has made it her job to make civil rights cases ... against the Federation.

For a while, Zack Snyder was building a cinematic universe for the Netflix streaming service that centered on his zombie movie Army of the Dead. The film was quickly followed by a prequel called Army of Thieves, a sequel was being written, and an anime series called Army of the Dead: Lost Vegas was in the works. But Snyder has since shifted his focus over to building a multi-media universe around his upcoming Netflix sci-fi film Rebel Moon – Part One: A Child of Fire (and its follow-up Rebel Moon – Part Two: The Scargiver). So Army of the Dead: Lost Vegas sits unfinished… and during an interview with Total Film magazine, Snyder revealed that Army of the Dead and Rebel Moon aren’t entirely separate. In fact, if Army of the Dead: Lost Vegas ever gets completed, we’ll be seeing a Rebel Moon crossover on the show!

This Star Trek: Strange New Worlds article contains spoilers.
It always comes back to Khan. Yes, even the latest episode of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, which finds Number One aka Commander Una Chin-Riley on trial for hiding her Illyrian heritage of genetic modification, and in the process violating the Federation’s restriction against augments. As made clear by Number One’s defense lawyer and fellow Illyrian Neera (Yetide Badaki), the ban seems to contradict the Federation’s central values, one that seeks (as the Vulcans put it) infinite diversity in infinite combinations.
In order to understand why the Federation restricts genetically modified individuals, one must take a look at one of the most infamous villains of the franchise: Khan Noonien Singh. Although Khan first appeared in the 1967 Original Series episode “Space Seed,” and then returned for the beloved 1982 movie Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan, he has his roots in the 1990s.

[Warning: The below contains Major spoilers for Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season 2 Episode 2 “Ad Astra per Aspera.”] Star Trek: Strange New Worlds resolves the major cliffhanger of Una’s (Rebecca Romijn) Season 1 finale arrest — Starfleet learned she’s Illyrian and arrested her for violations of the anti-genetic modification directive — in the latest episode. And in doing so, it reconnected Una with a childhood friend, Neera, and revealed who turned her in in the first place. Pike (Anson Mount) was the one to track down Neera, who, though reluctant, did take on Una as a client. Among those who took the stand in Una’s defense were: La’an (Christina Chong), Spock (Ethan Peck), and Dr. M’Benga (Babs Olusanmokun). And when it came time for Una to testify, Neera had her share why she joined Starfleet, knowing she could end up where she did. Its motto, ad ...

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season 2 Episode 2
Though Star Trek: Strange New Worlds has technically only aired 12 episodes to date, it has the confidence of a much older series, deftly shifting between genres and subverting familiar storytelling tropes in unexpected ways. From bodyswap romantic comedies and children’s fairytale fantasies to creepy body horror and even a shot-for-shot remake of a classic The Original Series episode, this show seems to delight in finding new ways to tell familiar stories, and the franchise is all the better for it.
The second installment in Strange New Worlds season 2 circles back to the storyline most of us probably thought the premiere would handle, and what follows is basically a courtroom procedural, a Star Trek does Law & Order riff that sees Enterprise First Officer Una Chin Riley face the legal consequences of her decision to...

Composer Ré Olunuga had a complicated dance with his first major studio film, "Rise." The drama, which tells the true story of the Antetokounmpo family, is an ensemble film spanning many years, visits different counties, and has an ending anyone vaguely familiar with the NBA already knows. For anyone not remotely familiar with professional basketball, Giannis, Thanasis, and Alex Antetokounmpo are NBA stars. They are the first trio of brothers to win the championship in NBA history.
It was the brothers' loving parents, Charles (Dayo Okeniyi) and Vera (Yetide Badaki), who helped instill such a powerful drive in the athletes. It was a drive, a rhythm that Olunuga wanted...

Most basketball movies, from “He Got Game” to “Love and Basketball” to the recent “Hustle,” presume an abiding love of the sport more or less from the jump. Even attention to the business side of the court tends to grow from a deeper, almost spiritual connection to the game’s fast-paced beauty. So it’s a notable change of pace that the new Disney+ original movie “Rise” takes a more methodical, sometimes practically minded approach to the story; by the 30-minute mark its characters have barely played so much as a game of pickup.
The opening section, following Charles Antetokounmpo (Dayo Okeniyi) and his wife Veronica (Yetide Badaki) on an arduous and unsanctioned emigration from Nigeria to Greece, contains no hints that this movie is actually about an NBA dynasty in the making. Charles and Veronica only want a better life for their family, and have already left the first...

"When one person in the family scores, the whole family scores." Disney has revealed an official trailer for an inspirational true story basketball movie titled Rise, from Nigerian filmmaker Akin Omotoso. Instead of a making a documentary or even a hybrid series, they decided to make a fictional feature, starring various actors playing the Antetokounmpos family. "Audiences have never seen a story like that of [this family]." Based on the real story about the family that produced the first trio of brothers to become NBA champions in the history of the league. Originally from Nigeria, their parents moved to Greece where they struggled to make ends meet on the streets of Athens - until three of their kids became basketball stars and eventually got drafted into the NBA. Rise stars Dayo Okeniyi & Yetide Badaki as the parents, Charles & Vera, with Uche Agada as Giannis, Ral Agada as Thanasis, and Jaden Osimuwa as Kostas.

Exclusive Update, 2:38 Pm: Two days after Starz made public its lack of faith in any more seasons of American Gods, producers Fremantle on Wednesday said the series based on Neil Gaiman’s acclaimed novel is still alive and kicking.
“Fremantle is committed to completing the epic journey that is American Gods, one of TV’s most inclusive series with the most amazing fans across the globe,” a spokesperson for the company told Deadline of a possible fourth season or more. “With Neil Gaiman and this fantastic cast and crew, we are exploring all options to continue to tell this magnificent story.”
The statement today backs remarks made Tuesday by EP Gaiman that the Ricky Whittle- and Ian McShane-led series wasn’t going quietly into the premium cable night.
Two early possibilities for more American Gods that may be coming into focus are Netflix and Amazon, we hear.

Where will Shadow's journey take him in the third season of the American Gods TV show on Starz? Will the fight continue? After huge season-to-season declines in the ratings, Starz has cancelled the American Gods TV series. There won't be a fourth season but, the show may still get some kind of a conclusion.
An adaptation of Neil Gaiman’s novel, the American Gods series stars Ricky Whittle, Ian McShane, Emily Browning, Yetide Badaki, Bruce Langley, Omid Abtahi, Ashley Reyes, Crispin Glover, Demore Barnes, Devery Jacobs, Blythe Danner, Marilyn Manson, Julia Sweeney, Iwan Rheon, Danny Trejo, Peter Stormare, Denis O'Hare, Lela Loren, Dominique Jackson, Wale, Herizen Guardiola, and Eric Johnson. The TV gods have turned their favor away from American Gods, at least for now. The series adaptation of Neil Gaiman’s novel starring Ricky Whittle and Ian McShane will not return for a fourth season on Starz, the network confirmed Monday.
The news of the premature end to the often-troubled series is not altogether unexpected, and follows the Season 3 finale on March 21. That season-ender saw Whittle’s Shadow Moon seemingly killed after a vigil at the mythical Tree of Life for his seemingly deceased and estranged father, Mr. Wednesday/Odin, played by McShane. A pivotal point in Gaiman’s book, the incident set up American Gods‘ fourth season with Wednesday taking advantage of Shadow Moon’s sacrifice for Wednesday’s own resurgence in the battle against the New Gods.
“Everyone at Starz is grateful to the dedicated cast and crew, and our partners at Fremantle who brought author and...

Zack Snyder’s Justice League Photograph by Clay Enos/HBO Max
An unprecedented time. An unprecedented opportunity. An army of persuasive fans.
And one very colorful, newly-shot scene.
After four years, director Zack Snyder returns to the Dceu to complete his vision.
It’s a new era. Superman (Henry Cavill) is dead and a new villain channeling a very old evil has arrived. Honoring Superman’s sacrifice, Batman (Ben Affleck) and Wonder Woman (Gal Gadot) must not only work together, but also unite an unlikely group of heroes – Cyborg (Ray Fisher), Aquaman (Jason Momoa), and The Flash (Ezra Miller) — to fight Steppenwolf, an eight-foot-tall warrior from the nightmare world of Apokolips who wants to conquer not only the Earth’s population but the planet’s entire existence.

A woman is found, dead and encased in barbed wire, at the foot of a waterfall in Tasmania, Australia. Seemingly inexplicably, she’s got a decades-old student identification card on her; it’s not hers. And that unsettling scene is the point where The Gloaming really gets going.

Sunday’s American Gods finale will find Shadow Moon holding an extremely physically taxing vigil for his dead father Mr. Wednesday, who also happens to be the Norse deity Odin. There’s no assurance that Shadow, whose mother was a Black woman with no celestial powers to speak of, will even make it through the nine-day ordeal. And then there’s the orisha, aka the Yoruba spirits who have literally danced through Shadow’s dreams and visions this season. What part might they play in our protagonist’s fate?

Updated Exclusive: CAA has dropped Marilyn Manson as a client, sources told Deadline on Tuesday, a day after allegations of sexual and emotional abuse made by Evan Rachel Wood were followed by similar claims by other women.
The news comes after the singer and actor was dropped by his music label, and his performances in upcoming episodes of Starz’s American Gods and Shudder’s Creepshow would be scrubbed.
Manson in a statement Monday said the claims are “horrible distortions of reality.”
CAA had no comment today.
Fyi – Evan Rachel Wood continues to be represented by CAA.
Previously, Monday Pm: Already dropped by his label and possibly his agency, Marilyn Manson’s bloody stint on Starz’s American Gods is over now too.
The axing comes after Evan Rachel Wood publicly accused the long in the tooth shock rocker of “horrifically” abusing and “grooming” her when the Westworld actress was still a teenager.

Rocker Marilyn Manson will no longer appear in upcoming episodes of Starz’s American Gods and Shudder’s Creepshow, following allegations of abuse made by actress Evan Rachel Wood and several other women.
Manson has appeared as Johan in two Season 3 episodes of American Gods so far, but an appearance in a future episode has now been nixed, a network spokesperson tells our sister site Deadline: “Due to the allegations made against Marilyn Manson, we have decided to remove his performance from the remaining episode he is in, scheduled to air later this season. American Gods star Yetide Badaki, known to fans of the show as love goddess Bilquis, has an upbringing as unique as any fictional character from Neil Gaiman’s fantasy novel.
She lived in England for three years, has lived in American since age 12, and went to college in Canada, but Badaki’s roots are planted in the soil of the country of her birth, Nigeria. Nigeria, Africa’s largest country, serves as the centerpiece of the larger tribal community known as Yorubaland along with Benin, Ghana, and Togo. Yorubaland is home to 55 million people and was one of the largest sources of the enslaved people to the United States of America. It’s also home to spirit world entities which are now about to enter into the American Gods’ canon: The Orisha.

It seems that throughout the history of technology, there has been no greater driver of technological change than the most simple of human desires: sex. From nickelodeon reels of women dancing in skimpy costumes to the home video format war of the ‘80s to the modern dating apps of today, sex sells, and sex has always been at the forefront of human invention. Someone makes a product, and someone else figures out how to use it to gratify humanity’s baser urges. To that end, it makes sense that the ancient Queen of Sheba and love goddess Bilquis and Technical Boy keep running into one another, despite their apparent differences.
Two American Gods, one old, one new. The goddess of the most intimate act that can occur between two or more people and the soulless personification of every Internet pop-up ad turning that connection into a commodity.

To call the production of American Gods’ first two seasons problem-plagued is to put it mildly; Old Testament Egypt had fewer problems with plagues.
After a successful first season, showrunners Bryan Fuller and Michael Green departed, followed by actors Kristin Chenoweth and Gillian Anderson. In February 2018, Jesse Alexander and original series author Neil Gaiman were announced as co-showrunners for the second season, but Alexander was removed in September 2018 and the lion’s share of the second season was guided by directing producer Chris Byrne and line producer Lisa Kussner. Season 3 now brings new showrunner Charles “Chic” Eglee, who reunites with Gaiman and deals with another big cast turnover: New Media (Kahyun Kim), the Djinn (Mousa Kraish), Mad Sweeney (Pablo Schreiber), and Mr. Nancy (Orlando Jones) have all departed from the show, with the lattermost cast member doing so in explosive fashion.

American Gods returns to Starz on Sunday, January 10, and fans of the novel will love what lies ahead.
With the action moving toward the snowy town of Lakeside, the action slows down just a bit, allowing for characters to get the attention they deserve.
Front and center for American Gods Season 3 are Ricky Whittle, Yetide Badaki, and Bruce Langley as Shadow Moon, Bilquis, and Technical Boy, respectively. Along with Neil Gaiman, they chatted with us on an American Gods press day, so we're here to share what we've learned with you.
I've seen the first four episodes, and the new season is grounded and engrossing. It brings to light the mesmerizing pages of the book, and given the many changes from page to screen, it's much appreciated.
Season 3 sets aside a little of the flash from previous seasons to establish the setting and fully explore the characters we've grown to love.
