Samurai movies usually include stories of chivalry, self-sacrifice, dedication, and occasionally impressive swordsmanship. Yuso Asahara presents, however, another kind of warrior, the Kitchen Samurai, whose weapons are only sharpened to cut smoothly through the fish and vegetables that comprised the main materials of washoku, the traditional Japanese cuisine, included in the Unesco World Heritage List since 2013.

Director Shunji Muguruma was born in Sasebo, Nagasaki Prefecture in 1969. He has been directing – and often writing – several films and TV Dramas, his latest work “Jk Rock” was premiered internationally in Udine.
On the occasion of “Jk Rock” screening at Udine Far East Film Festival we talked about rock and roll, purple Lamboghinis, girl power and the energy of the young generation.
Where did the inspiration for the story of “Jk Rock” come from?
I always wanted to create a story with youngsters and rock. A long time ago, I also directed a TV drama, “Esu o Nerae!” (Ace) which originally was a popular comic book. The leading actress was Aya Ueto and she was portraying the story of a girl wanting to become a tennis player but she wasn’t very good at it, so she finds a coach that was very very strong and train her and it...

Takumi Saitoh is a Japanese actor and model, well known for starring with Aya Ueto in the popular romantic TV-series-turned-film “Hirugao”; his 2017 directorial debut “Blank 13” was a film about a problematic father/son relationship and it turned up to be a very pleasant surprise.
The enigmatic title refers to a 13-year gap in the relationship between Koji (Issei Takahashi) and his father (Lily Franky), a pathological gambler who had suddenly vanished in thin air, leaving behind the wife and their two children. If on one hand his disappearance had freed the family from an inconsiderate father and the constant stream of deb collectors and troubles that came with him, on the other had forced Koji’s mother to work nights and days to make ends meet and consequently leave the two boys to their own devices. All in all, lots of reasons to resent the man and it doesn’t...

40. Road to Perdition
One of the more surprising and lesser-known facts about Sam Mendes’ second film, Road to Perdition, is that it’s actually adapted from a graphic novel of the same name by Max Allan Collins. The plot follows Michael Sullivan (Tom Hanks), an Irish mob enforcer as he goes on the run with his son Michael Jr. after Jr. witnesses a murder and their family is killed in an effort to cover up any witnesses. There’s many great things in this film that standout, such as Jude Law’s creepy performance as assassin Harlen Maguire, one of Paul Newman’s final and finest performances as mob boss John Rooney, and Hollywood got an early look at the talent of Daniel Craig as the unstable Connor Rooney. However, it’s the climax that remains the most memorable thing in it, featuring some of the most iconic work from...

Angelina Jolie and Elle Fanning continued their Tokyo press duties for Maleficent when they attended a photocall for their new film on Tuesday. The two actresses were joined at the photo-op by Japanese actress Aya Ueto, who does the Japanese voice of Princess Aurora in the translated version of the project. Angie chose to leave her children back at their hotel for this event, but she did have them on hand when the whole gang posed for photos at Tokyo's Haneda Airport over the weekend ahead of the film's Monday night premiere. Angie and Elle's promotion efforts appear to be paying off as Maleficent has officially surpassed the $500 million mark in worldwide box office sales, making it Angelina's highest-grossing film, ever. (Her previous biggest blockbuster was 2005's Mr. and Mrs. Smith, which earned $478.2 million worldwide.) Despite her busy press schedule, Angelina still found time to host the Global Summit...

Though perhaps not too familiar to younger western viewers, “Oshin” was one of the most popular and influential Japanese television series of the last few decades, comprising some 297 episodes of 15 minutes and enjoying a massive share of the audience both at home and abroad during its original airing back in 1984. Inspired by the life of Wada Katsu, founder of the Japanese supermarket chain Yaohan, this new screen adaption focuses on her childhood and her tough experiences growing up during the Meiji period, and was directed by Togashi Shin (“Angel’s Egg”). The young Hamada Kokone stars in the crucial leading role, having been apparently chosen from nearly 2500 other hopeful candidates, backed by Ueto Aya (“Thermae Romae”) as her mother and Smap’s Inagaki Goro as her father, with the original series stars Kobayashi Ayako and Izumi Pinko also taking supporting parts. The film opens in 1907, in Yamagata Prefecture, with the...

2012′s Toronto International Film Festival is set to officially announce its initial line-up later today, but Variety let the cat out of the bag, at least partially; and it’s quite astounding. Most of our most-anticipated films of the year will be premiering at the Canadian festival, notably Terrence Malick‘s To the Wonder, Wachowskis & Tom Tykwer‘s epic-sounding Cloud Atlas, Rian Johnson‘s Looper (which will open the fest), Ben Affleck‘s Argo, Dereck Cianfrance‘s The Place Beyond the Pines and much, more more.
Coming from Sundance, the only mentioned film was Ben Lewis‘ John Hawkes-starring The Sessions, while Cannes premieres include Matteo Garrone‘s Reality, Thomas Vinterberg‘s The Hunt, Pablo Larrain‘s No and Jacques Audiard‘s Rust and Bone. One of the biggest surprises is a new film from Noah Baumbach, starring Greta Gerwing titled Frances Ha. There’s also The Avengers director Joss Whedon...

On April 25, Sadako of the Ring J-horror series threw out the first pitch at the Tokyo Dome when the Hokkaido Nippon-Ham Fighters played the Chiba Lotte Marines. Now she’s getting her own baseball card.
Bbm will include the Sadako card in their 2012 Second Version, which is due out in August.
While the majority of cards typically feature players, Bbm has been known to throw in a few ceremonial first pitchers in the past such as Aya Ueto, Maomi Yuuki, and Aki Hoshino. Sadako is presumably the first physical manifestation of a vengeance-fueled curse to have the honor.
Sadako’s first pitch was part of a big promotional push for Sadako 3D, which is currently in theaters.

The official website for Hideki Takeuchi’s upcoming live-action adaptation of Thermae Romae has been updated with a trailer.
Based on a manga by Mari Yamazaki, the movie stars Hiroshi Abe as an ancient Roman bath house design engineer named Lucious who—while desperately seeking inspiration for a new idea—gains the ability to slip back and forth through time from the public bath in ancient Rome to a bath house in modern day Japan.
Through his encounters with the “flat-faced clan” (his unfortunate name for the Japanese people) he encounters, he discovers that they too share a love of baths and becomes so fascinated with their innovations that he decides to “invent” them in his own time. Meanwhile, he meets a young Japanese manga artist named Mami (Aya Ueto) and ends up taking her on a wild adventure through time.

Hiroshi Abe and Aya Ueto have been cast in the live-action adaption of Mari Yamazaki’s award-winning manga Thermae Romae.
The comedy revolves around an ancient Roman bath house architect named Lucius (Abe) who’s hard up for new ideas. In the search for inspiration, he time-travels to various baths in modern-day Japan.
Ueto will co-star as Mami, a cute Japanese woman and aspiring manga artist whom Lucius would refer to as part of the “flat-faced tribe”.
“I want to play the flat-faced tribe representative Mami with all my might so that I won’t lose,” Ueto proclaimed enthusiastically.
Hideki Takeuchi (Nodame Cantabile) is directing and Shogo Muto (Crows Zero) handled the screenplay.
Filming began in Rome on March 14 at a huge open-air set at Cinecittà film studio.

Previously only seen in glimpses as a teaser trailer, here’s your first full look at the big-budget live-action “Space Battleship Yamato” movie via YouTube. Based on the popular anime, the live-action movie is directed by Takashi Yamazaki (“Returner”), and stars Koyuki (last seen in “Blood: The Last Vampire”), Aya Ueto (star of the “Azumi” movies), and Takuya Kimura (“I Come with the Rain”). It was apparently shown during a Japanese TV show, hence the Pip with the people, uh, watching the trailer along with us. To save the human race once again facing the danger of extinction, the restored Yamato voyages in to outer space. The year is 2220. A black hole with a size 300 times larger than the sun approaches the Solar System and the earth is expected to fall in to massive black hole. A transmigration to the Sairam Star begins and the first convoy led by Kodai Yuki departs the earth.

Tarantino is the latest film star to be showing up on the small screen in Japan. Embarrassing? Or, rather, more embarrassing than Brad Pitt?
In the not-too distant past it was quite possible for Hollywood stars to pocket what we can only imagine are swagbags of cash for starring in some pretty goofy Japanese advertisements, safe in the knowledge that no one they knew well would ever get to see them. Unfortunately (for them, at least) YouTube has changed all that.
That said, Quentin Tarantino's latest foray into acting is unlikely to prove tremendously embarrassing - if only because it shows the director of Kill Bill and Pulp Fiction as a good sport. Tarantino is the latest celeb to appear in a long-running series of ads for Japanese mobile phone manufacturer SoftBank, starring the White family, whose members include Me (played by popular singer/actress Aya Ueto), Dad (a...

If there is any place in the world that has the strongest sentimental attachment towards Imagi Studios’ Astro Boy, it would undoubtedly be Japan. After all, the flying robot kid is revered as the Mickey Mouse of Japan so you know the Japanese media will have a field day on this animated film. In a local TV program, some previously unseen footage has been revealed and it was also announced that actress Aya Ueto (Azumi and Azumi 2) will provide the voice for the title character. It hits theaters on October 23rd. You’ll find the new footage after the jump.

While browsing my bookmarks I noticed that the official website for Ryuhei Kitamura and Shunji Iwai’s rotoscope anime Baton starring Hayato Ichihara and Aya Ueto has been updated with a new trailer. It only runs ten seconds longer than the first trailer I wrote about back in March but shows a lot of new material because there are less text overlays.

Baton is a new anime from director Ryuhei Kitamura (Versus, Azumi) and Shunji Iwai (April Story, All About Lily Chou-Chou) that is being produced by Us animation studio titmouse (huh?). There’s not much known about the story at the moment See update below!, only that Aya Ueto and (Hayato Ichihara will play the two main characters Apollo and Micha(?)l who live together with intelligent robots on a future Earth.
The three, about 20 minutes long Episodes of Baton will be shown during the 150th anniversary celebration of the city of Yokohama from April 28 to September 27.
[See post to watch Flash video] According to the development studio Wild Boar Media, Baton is a mixture of “traditional rotoscope animation with added 2D and 3D effects”…the result kinda looks like A Scanner Darkly gets drunk with Freedom on a cocktail party thrown by Ralph Bakshi.
Update: Nippon Cinema has come up with a detailed synopsis for the flick:
