Even a Hollywood hit with Chinese characteristics can’t seem to revive the U.S. studios’ diminished status at China’s box office.
Dreamworks Animation’s Kung Fu Panda 4 — the latest installment in one of China’s favorite long-running U.S. franchises, thanks to its Chinese culture-steeped story — opened to $14.7 million from Friday to Sunday, according to data from regional consultancy Artisan Gateway. But that total toplined one of the country’s weakest weekends of the year, so far. Including preview screenings the week prior, Kung Fu Panda 4 finished Sunday with a somewhat healthier-sounding $25.9 million.
Either way, the movie is miles behind its franchise predecessor Kung Fu Panda 3, which opened the weekend before Chinese New Year in 2016 with a record-setting $57.8 million haul. The threequel finished its run in China with $154.3 million, surpassing its North American total of $143.5 million. Chinese ticketing app Maoyan currently projects Kung Fu Panda 4...

Back in 2010 in Hong Kong, Wong Ching-po shot the cult “Revenge: A Love Story”, about a man that kills pregnant women, taking away their unborn babies. His later works, however, were mostly martial arts/action movies that definitely did not reach the standards of the aforementioned. That is until this year and “The Pig, the Snake and the Pigeon” which seems to bring him back to the Cat III space that he thrived, this time, though, in a Taiwanese production.

“Dune 2” launched in mainland China cinemas this weekend with a solid $19.9 million three-day haul. That put it in second place, narrowly behind holdover crime-drama “The Pig, the Snake and the Pigeon.”
Data from consultancy firm Artisan Gateway, showed that “The Pig, the Snake and the Pigeon” earned $21.3 million (RMB151 million) between Friday and Sunday, for a 10-day cumulative of $54.1 million (RMB384 million). “Dune 2” managed RMB142 million.
Many Hollywood titles have struggled in China over the past three years, especially franchise titles. But “Dune 2” with its particularly spectacular visuals looks to have escaped the rut.
Giant screen provider Imax, which has nearly 800 screens in the Middle Kingdom, reported that some $6.5 million of the film’s opening weekend was earned at its venues. That was nearly a third of its opening total in China.
Local cinema ticketing firm Maoyan has increased its predictions for “Dune 2’s” performance in China.

Wong Ching-po’s The Pig, the Snake, and the Pigeon takes a glimpse into the gruesome criminal world of Taiwan. Through its portrayal of a notorious criminal’s life, Ching-po talks about the inner conflicts of people on this side of morality. This film presents a fresh take on vigilantism and the repercussions of arrogance, greed, and deception. Additionally, I think the movie also serves to lay bare the superstitions and spiritual beliefs of people with such violent inclinations and how one views mortality within oneself. In essence, this film serves as a spectacle reflecting the multifaceted nature of morality and human nature, compelling the audience to look at the blurred lines between good and evil.

Taiwanese-produced crime action film “The Pig, the Snake and the Pigeon” opened on top of the mainland China box office over the weekend, ahead of a quartet of holdover titles from Lunar New Year. Sony’s ‘Madame Web’ and a rereleased “Dune” also opened, but they failed to penetrate the top five.
“The Pig, the Snake and the Pigeon” earned $16.2 million (RMB115 million), according to data from consultancy firm Artisan Gateway. Other than the Lunar New Year titles, that represented the highest opening by any new film in China this year. But it was not entirely a convincing performance. It came in only narrowly ahead of “Article 20,” the Zhang Yimou-directed crime comedy drama that has been in cinemas for four weeks now.

Once Upon a Time in Shanghai
Directed by Ching-Po Wong
Written by Jing Wong
China & Hong Kong, 2014
Inspired by the Shaw brothers classic Boxer from Shantung, Once Upon a Time in Shanghai is an exceptional action film with the right doses of heart and humour. Set in 1930s Shanghai, the film is about the arrival of country boy with incredible talent in martial arts and his rise within the local criminal party. Though not rife with originality, the film packs a punch thanks to the charisma of the leads and the impressive choreography.
Visually, the film evokes a throwback to a bygone era. Though not shot in black and white, the film adopts an extremely low saturation to evoke a sort of faded nostalgia. This works best in the film’s action sequences, allowing the actor’s movements through space come to the forefront. Black and white within the action...

Hong Kong popstar-turned-actor Juno Mak continues to defy expectations with his directorial debut, a sombre and eerie eulogy to the hopping vampires of the 1980s that trades the sub-genre's signature laughs for world-weary melancholy from a fine cast of screen veterans. Inspired by the traditional Chinese vampire films of his youth, most notably Ricky Lau's Mr. Vampire (1985), Mak set out to resurrect and ultimately lay to rest that particular sub-genre of Hong Kong horror. Don’t let the “love” in the title of director Ching-Po Wong’s category III horror thriller Revenge: A Love Story, put you off. As movies go it’s about as far from a chick flick as we are from Jupiter, and is due for a UK theatrical screening next week. London’s Prince Charles Cinema Leicester Sq is the place to be on Wednesday 28 August 8.45pm doors open / 9.00pm film starts. Tickets can be snapped up here. Synopsis: Police are investigating a serial killer who targets pregnant women and the media have labelled him 'The Dissector' and running sensationalist headlines such as "Pregnant woman dissected alive, husband put to death in 100 degrees boiling water". At the scene of yet another such murder, and led by undercover detectives Jeff and Kwok Wah (Chin Siu Ho, Tony Ho) they comb the area and find a known suspect, Chan Kit (Juno Mak), and bring him in.

Hong Kong pop-star turned actor Juno Mak, who has given impressive performances in such films as Revenge: A Love Story and Let's Go! (both directed by Wong Ching Po), has revealed to Twitch that production is underway on his directorial debut. Supernatural thriller Rigor Mortis harks back to the classic Chinese vampire movies of the 1980s, in particular the Mr. Vampire series, which starred Lam Ching Ying as unibrowed Taoist priest Master Kau, ably supported by Ricky Hui Koon Ying and Chin Siu Ho. Eschewing much of the comedic tone of those films, Mak brings back Chin (the only surviving member of that original golden trio) to play a tortured version of himself in a much darker, more introspective horror film. Director: Wong Ching Po. Review: Adam Wing. According to director Wong Ching Po (Jiang Hu), Revenge: A Love Story is a movie about hatred, and there’s a good chance it won’t take you long to figure that out for yourself. “Human beings can never let go of hatred. Being in hatred is like a one way trip into darkness, you will never come back until it is settled.” If you want an idea of how brutal his latest vision is at times, you only have to read the words of the man himself. “We wanted to relieve the pain brought by hatred, but we failed. We can’t imagine how torturing it is to live with hatred after all.” Revenge: A Love Story isn’t the perfect date movie then, but it is available on UK shores for the first time this month courtesy of Terror-cotta. Whenever Hong Kong director Wong Ching Po releases a new film, I invariably find myself approaching it with newfound excitement and lofty expectations, despite the fact that to-date they have never fully been met. While Wong's films are always beautifully crafted and gorgeous to look at, and more often than not address themes firmly rooted in hardboiled crime Cinema, somewhere along the way they fail to connect. Wong has a tendency to approach his films with a lofty, some might say pretentious, ambition that attempts to transcend the trappings of the subject matter and find some greater meaning or resonance. However, crime stories and overt expressionism are uneasy bedfellows at the very best of times and Wong's films have in the past struggled to find...

One of the most exciting film festivals in the fair city of Hong Kong, the Hkaff always promises a bold and adventurous line-up of features from across the region and their 2011 slate proves to be no exception. The festival kicks off on 18 October with Johnnie To's hotly anticipated Life Without Principle and runs until 8 November, wrapping things up in fine style with Wong Ching Po's Let's Go. In between, the programming team has packed the schedule to the rafters with some of the hottest titles to come out of Asia this year. Most exciting for me out of all the films screening is Indonesian balls-to-the-wall actioner, The Raid, fresh off winning the Cadillac People's Choice Midnight Madness Award at Toronto. Reuniting Welsh director...

Hong Kong is once again edging away from it's rather commercial, "safe" image. Point in case the latest slasher turns dramatic cop thriller from director Ching-Po Wong. Hong Kong's legendary CatIII rating has risen from the dead and has turned up some successful titles over the past couple of months, but Wong is eager to show that it's not all sleaze and schlock that gets branded as CatIII. Revenge: A Love Story is first class genre cinema with a mean edge.Revenge: A Love Story is the stylistic follow up of 852 Films' Dream Home and the second film produced under Josie Ho's film label. Where Dream Home brought new life to the Hong Kong slasher genre, Revenge is a more complex beast altogether. It's not...

Good news for UK film fans! Terracotta Distribution has announced the acquisition of Wong Ching Po's festival hit, Revenge: A Love Story for release as part of their upcoming Terror-Cotta horror imprint. I haven't yet seen the film, which had its international premiere at the Terracotta Far East Film Festival a few months back, but Neils had nothing but glowing comments on this one, concluding his review with this:Revenge: A Love Story plays like a modern Hong Kong version of Se7en, only better, more tense and not as restrained as Fincher's film. Ching-Po Wong proves the perfect director for this and delivers a film that will remain with you some days after the initial viewing. Revenge: A Love Story lacks any weak points, excels on...

I couldn’t find an official synopsis, but just take a look at the first trailer and the sweet old-school poster for director Ching-Po Wong’s (Revenge: A Love Story) Let’S Go!. According to Wong, the film starring Juno Mak, Patricia Ha, Stephy Tang and Wang Yu will be based on the vintage Japanese anime Space Emperor God Sigma (宇宙大帝ゴッドシグマ) and will be released late 2011.

The film has its world premiere tomorrow at this year's Venice International Film Festival and stars Lau Ching Wan, Richie Ren and Denise Ho as three strangers who become embroiled in a kidnapping case. The festival will close with Wong Ching Po's Let's Go. The types of films coming out of Hong Kong are usually a unique class of their own. They can belong to one of several categories and the most prominent exports are historical fantasy, martial-arts, and gangster. If they're not on local Chinese community TV, then there are DVDs.
While Kung Fu Hustle (功夫) is the most original take on making the gangster hip and chic by strutting their stuff in the 40's, Triad Underworld (江湖; Gong Wu or Jiang Hu in Chinese) drives home a different image by using the modern day era to romanticize the world of the Triads.

Yesterday, the first wave of films for Austin’s Fantastic Fest 2011 were announced. Since experiencing this festival for the first time last year, I have been waiting, impatiently, for September to roll around to attend this year. We published a “wishlist” of sorts of films we thought might play at Fantastic Fest and it looks like we scored two in this first wave – we aren’t counting Fulci’s Zombie because that was sort of a cheat. Read beyond the break to find out what films will be playing.

The Fantasia Film Festival kicks off today with the Canadian premiere of Kevin Smith’s Red State, and now we’re already looking ahead at another major film fest. Fantastic Fest is one of the best film festivals in the states. Held in Austin Texas at the Alamo Drafthouse, the event screens nothing but the best in genre films. Sound On Sight contributors Emmett Duff and Alice Gray are always in attendance to bring us coverage on the event, as well as their favourite films. The list of the first wave of films playing at the festival has been announced and it’s already pretty amazing. Leading the pack is the World Premiere of director Ferdinando Baldi’s Comin’ At Ya! 3D. There are also a few films that already come highly recommended from me, which include the Canadian sci-fi dystopian mind fuck Beyond The Black Rainbow, Julian Gilbey’s A Lonely Place To Die,...

Fantastic Fest is one of the most chaotic, disturbing, entertaining and best film festivals in the United States. For one week straight, the Alamo Drafthouse South Lamar in Austin, Texas plays nothing but the most promising, controversial and exciting genre films the world has to offer with many of them not seeing wide release until several months later. /Film will once again be on the ground in Austin from September 22-29 and we just got the announcement of the first wave of films playing at the festival. Chances are that, with the exception of two restored Fulci films (Zombi and House by the Cemetery) and the 10th Anniversary release of Versus, you haven't heard of these movies yet. But, come September, you most certainly will start hearing a lot more. Check them out after the jump. The above art is this year's official art by Mike Saputo. Below is the...

It's almost that time of year, that happy, happy time of year when the world turns its eyes to Austin, Texas and the craziest genre movies ever at the Alamo Drafthouse's Fantastic Fest.
This morning we got the first wave of twenty films from this year's lineup and it look to be a bumper crop of cinematic insanity. There's a couple of favorites from the festival circuit -- including "Beyond the Black Rainbow" from Tribeca and "A Lonely Place to Die" from ActionFest -- and a couple intriguing premieres, including the evocatively titled "Invasion of the Alien Bikini" (made on a budget of $5,000) and a Dutch comedy called "New Kids Turbo" about "gutter comedy, mullets, and mustaches." Repertory titles include the tenth anniversary screening of Ryuhei Kitamura's "Versus," the theatrical premiere of the new 3K digital restoration of Lucio Fulci's "Zombie," and a Real D presentation of the...

If things go as planned, GeekTyrant will be covering this years Fantastic Fest in Austin, TX. I have never been to what has been named the "Geek Telluride", but I am anxious to attend. Every year there are tons of awesome genre films to assault the senses and this year is no different.
One of the coolest bits is that the fest will be showing a remastered version of Leo Fulci's Zombie, which is one of the best classic zombie films not directed by Romero. There are also some sweet Korean, French, Russian films and so much more.
FantasticFest is truly the place to be in September!

I first saw Dream Home at Frightfest and I pretty much fell in love with it. You can read my review of the film here. Released on DVD today by Network Releasing, Dream Home definitely comes with a strong recommendation from me.
The lead performance by Josie Ho as Cheng Li-sheung is one of many high points in the film and a couple of months ago I was lucky enough to be given the chance to email off a few questions to Josie and you can find her responses below. Dream Home was financed and produced by 852 films, a company co-founded by Josie Ho, and their next film is the Ching-Po Wong directed Revenge: A Love Story.
Cheng Li-sheung in Dream Home is a complex and fascinating character. Was there anything you specifically did to prepare to play the character and what was the experience like on set?...

It would appear that Josie Ho and her 852 Films banner are aiming to single handedly bring the Category Three film back into Hong Kong's mainstream. The Cat III, for those unaware, is essentially Hong Kong's R rating, the category reserved for the most violent or most sexual - or, in some cases, those films containing true life gang content - films allowed to be distributed in mainstream Hong Kong cinemas. In the late 80s and early 90s Hong Kong had a thriving Cat III scene in their film industry with producers turning out stacks of cult titles and hard edged horror but in recent days these films have all but disappeared.
Well, Ho is now two for two as a producer. First came Pang Ho-Cheung's gory slasher Dream Home and now they have cast Japanese porn star Sola Aoi opposite local boy Juno Mak for psycho-sexual thriller Revenge: A Love Story.
