In the making since 2019, Page Hurwitz’s new Netflix documentary, Outstanding: A Comedy Revolution, taps a throng of queer notables — from Wanda Sykes, Rosie O’Donnell and Lily Tomlin to Joel Kim Booster, Fortune Feimster and Bob the Drag Queen — to show how LGBTQ funny people have left their mark and challenged others’ perceptions for more than a century.
“None of these comedians set out to change the world. They set out to make people laugh,” Hurwitz said at the film’s Tribeca Festival premiere ahead of its June 18 streaming debut. “And along the way, they did change the culture and, I think, they changed the world.”
Featuring an intergenerational and diverse cast, the documentary — set against the backdrop of the Netflix Is a Joke Fest’s Stand Out: An LGBTQ+ Celebration show in 2022 — unpacks what has fueled the cycle of progress and regression that has surrounded the queer comedy community for decades.

Joel Kim Booster is sharing why his focus is not on becoming a trailblazer.
The comedian-actor has established his name in the entertainment industry in recent years, notably with his 2022 Netflix stand-up special Psychosexual, Hulu’s gay romantic comedy Fire Island, which he wrote and starred in, and his role in the TV series Loot.
“It’s difficult because I am not somebody who went into this wanting to be an advocate or a trailblazer or anything — I just wanted to make people laugh,” he recently explained to People magazine. “All the rest of it is a byproduct. You cannot prioritize it. You cannot be mission first, joke second and be successful.”
Booster said it actually makes him “really uncomfortable” when people call him a “trailblazer” as he feels the term should be used for comedians who helped pave the way for others. And particularly those who came before him...

Matthew McConaughey and Kate Hudson proved to be a charming couple in Donald Petrie’s How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days. In the early 2000s, McConaughey was predominantly cast in rom-com movies. Revisiting his days as a Hollywood heartthrob recently, McConaughey recalled meeting Hudson before the production began on the film. He shared that it was the natural chemistry between them that landed him the lead role in the film.

Watch Kelly Clarkson Annihilate Natalie Portman in ‘Black Swan’ Oscar Trivia: ‘I’m So Sorry’ | Video
Kelly Clarkson didn’t come to play.
In an intense session of Oscar trivia on Monday’s “The Kelly Clarkson Show” emcee’d by “Bros” funnyman Guy Branum, guest Natalie Portman was caught by surprise by Clarkson’s Hollywood know-how, even at one point admitting she’s “kind of” asleep when Branum ribbed her about the 3-0 shutout.
But the highlight of the game came when Clarkson beat Portman to the buzzer on a question about Darren Aronofsky’s 2010 horror fantasia “Black Swan,” a project that won Portman her lead actress Oscar.
The game, cheekily titled “May I Have Another December” in a nod to Portman’s current Netflix feature costarring Julianne Moore, kicks off in the segment above with Portman down and Branum offering her a pep talk.
“Alright, get it together. You’re representing for everyone from ‘No Strings Attached,'” Branum said. “Question 3: What movie was...

Los Angeles, July 14 (Ians) With the news that SAG-AFTRA will now go on strike, members of the acting guild have taken to social media to express their support for the union and to commit to the fight, reports ‘Variety’.
SAG-AFTRA — Screen Actors Guild-American Federation of Television and Radio Artists — are joining the Writers Guild of America (WGA) in striking for fair compensation, making it a “double strike”, which hasn’t happened since 1960. The WGA struck work on May 2.
Jamie Lee Curtis took to Instagram and championed the strike by posting a photo of the comedy and tragedy masks, ‘Variety’ adds. “It looks like it’s time to take down the Masks. And pick up the Signs,” she wrote in the caption.
Curtis was awarded the supporting actress prize for “Everything Everywhere All at Once” at the SAG Awards earlier this year. She has Disney’s “Haunted Mansion” set for release in August,...

Plot: A platonic pair of former best friends approaching midlife who reconnect after a long rift. The duo’s friendship becomes all consuming—and destabilizes their lives in a hilarious way.
Review: A question that has been used as fodder for countless romantic comedies over the years is whether a man and a woman can be friends without becoming sexual. Rob Reiner’s classic When Harry Met Sally asked that question, and the answer was a resounding no. But the new series Platonic starring Seth Rogen and Rose Byrne, may prove otherwise. Reuniting the stars of the two Neighbors films, Platonic is a relationship comedy about two people in very different places who rediscover a friendship that helps them reassess parts of their lives that they otherwise could not contend with. It is a sweet and funny series that benefits from the charm and effortless chemistry between Rogen and Byrne...

As a team, Rose Byrne and Seth Rogen by themselves could will anything to watchability. If anything, the new Apple TV+ show “Platonic” is a showcase for the things that each of them are unspeakably good at doing. Byrne is a physical comedy sorceress, turning everything from the process of getting ready in the morning to being repulsed by reptiles into its own distinct kind of laugh. Rogen paints with rants and references like a gravelly voiced watercolorist, rattling off reasons to be upset or angry like he’s capturing a Parisian countryside.

No ulterior motive, just a chance for two close friends to not be completely banished from each other’s lives. Apple TV+’s Platonic knows perfectly well that it’s going to draw comparisons to When Harry Met Sally. The characters themselves call out the parallels within the first ten minutes, when Will (Seth Rogen) insists the ’80s classic “proves” it’s possible for him to remain platonic with his ex-bff Sylvia (Rose Byrne) — only to be disabused of the notion when it’s pointed out to him that the film actually ends with Harry and Sally getting hitched.
In truth, though, the When Harry Met Sally references are a bit of a feint. Platonic, created by Nicholas Stoller and Francesca Delbanco (Netflix’s Friends from College), is less concerned with whether men and women can maintain friendships in general than it is with what Will and Sylvia are getting out of this particular friendship at this particular moment. And while clean-cut answers prove hard to come by, the series...

One of the most acclaimed studio comedies in recent memory will soon be available from the comfort of your couch, in your preferred method of consumption. The movie in question is "Bros," the gay romcom starring Billy Eichner and directed by Nicholas Stoller, of "Neighbors" fame, not to mention that it was produced by Judd Apatow. The point is, this movie has a great pedigree of talent, with our own Sarah Milner giving it a glowing review out of TIFF. Now, for those who may have missed it in theaters, the time has come to watch it at home.
But the question becomes, what's the best way to watch "Bros" at home? Is it going to be available on a major streaming service? Is it available through digital retailers? And what about a Blu-ray release for lovers of physical media out there? We've got all of the information you need right here but,...

Peacock has announced that the groundbreaking romantic comedy Bros — the first from a major studio to center on two gay men — will begin streaming exclusively on the platform on December 2nd.
The film directed by Nicholas Stoller is a smart, swoony and heartfelt story about gay men — played by Billy Eichner and Luke Macfarlane—maybe, possibly, probably, stumbling towards love. Maybe. They’re both very busy. Its cast also includes Ts Madison, Miss Lawrence, Symone, Guillermo Diaz, Guy Branum, Monica Raymund, Jim Rash, Harvey Fierstein, Bowen Yang, Amanda Bearse, Dot-Marie Jones, and many more.
Eichner and Stoller penned the script. Stoller also produced alongside Judd Apatow and Josh Church, with Eichner exec producing.

Bros comes bearing discourse wounds. After the much-hyped gay romcom bellyflopped its US release, its star and co-writer Billy Eichner raged against the dying buzz on Twitter. America’s “straight people, especially in certain parts of the country, just didn’t show up for Bros”, he declared, before urging anyone who isn’t a “homophobic weirdo” to check it out. Then came the think pieces: did Bros flop because of homophobia? Or because the romcom is dead? Or… because it’s a bad movie? Unfortunately, it’s the last one, since Bros is a big old mess.
A thrum of resentment simmers just under Bros’ metropolitan shine. Playing a perpetually single New York podcaster named Bobby, Eichner (who also co-writes) spends much of his film barking opinions at anyone unlucky enough to be nearby.

Spoiler Alert: The following reveals major plot points from tonight’s episode of NBC’s Chicago P.D. titled “Dónde Vives.”
Up until tonight, the life experiences of Chicago P.D. newcomer Dante Torres (Benjamin Levy Aguilar) have remained a mystery. Following Jay Halstead’s (Jesse Lee Soffer) shocking and heartbreaking departure last week, a proper introduction to the man he was ready to take under his wing was exactly the way to go.
Just seconds into “Dónde Vives” (where you live), the mood is somber in the unit as their fearless leader Hank Voight (Jason Beghe) arrives and barely manages to give Torres a half-hearted nod.
But as they say, the show must go on and the team takes turns teaching Torres how things work around the office. Kim Burgess (Marina Squerciati) helps the newbie settle in by teaching him protocols but it’s hard to ignore Hailey Upton...

While Billy Eichner is certainly not the first person to bring explicitly queer stories to a mass audience, I do agree with him about the viability of bringing joyful queer stories to the big screen. Streamers have been beating studios at their own game with the releases of "Fire Island" and "Crush" this year alone. But then that opens up a bigger conversation about queer folks being represented on theaters screens in the same manner as heterosexual folks. Unfortunately, the release of "Bros" has made this a bit more complicated.
After an extensive marketing campaign, "Bros" sadly underperformed at the box office, raking in just under 9 million against a 22 million budget so far. The film stars Billy Eichner as Bobby, a self-professed loner whose cracks start to get filled in once he stumbles onto a beautiful man named Aaron (Luke Macfarlane). Despite taking jabs at the romantic comedy complex, "Bros...

Less than a week after Billy Eichner went on a Twitter tear following the revelation that Bros would be a box office flop, director/co-writer Nicholas Stoller and producer Guy Branum are trying to do some damage control on both Eichner and the movie.
After its lackluster opening weekend, Bros co-writer and star Billy Eichner took to Twitter to blast those who didn’t see the movie–particularly straight white males. “That’s just the world we live in, unfortunately…Even with glowing reviews, great Rotten Tomatoes scores, an A CinemaScore, etc., straight people, especially in certain parts of the country, just didn’t show up for Bros. And that’s disappointing but it is what it is.” He got even more harsh by labeling many “homophobic weirdo[s].”
Billy Eichner was also proud Bros was going to theaters, unlike other LGBT-based movies that go to streaming and feel, as he put it,...

When buzz started building earlier this year for Bros, the first LGBTQ romantic comedy released theatrically by a Hollywood studio, it’s safe to assume that no one involved with the film anticipated the debate that would engulf social media and the industry in the wake of its release.
In a perfect world, the dialogue might have remained focused on the sterling reviews, with filmmaker Nicholas Stoller’s comedy currently holding an 89 percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes, or the A CinemaScore, or the movie featuring only Lgtbq performers in the main roles. Indeed, there didn’t appear to be anything particularly controversial about the premise of Bros, which tells the story of podcaster Bobby, played by Billy Eichner (who co-wrote the script) as a lone wolf convinced he’ll never find the right match until he falls for beefy Aaron (Luke Macfarlane), who...

“Success has many fathers,” the old saying goes, “but failure is an orphan.” Nonetheless, that orphan has no shortage of forensic surgeons ready to give it an autopsy. As early as Saturday of the opening weekend of the Universal gay romantic comedy “Bros,” the Monday-morning quarterbacking began, as various corners of the internet came forward with their reasons why the film’s grosses were a disappointment.
The marketing was too focused on its status as the first major-studio LGBTQ rom-com! It was too white! The poster was off-putting! The title was vague! Billy Eichner and Luke Macfarlane aren’t big enough names to open a movie! People don’t go to rom-coms during Halloween season! People don’t go to rom-coms, full stop! The reasons seemed endless. Sometimes they were thoughtful. Sometimes.

Billy Eichner is calling out straight people for not seeing “Bros” in theaters.
The Judd Apatow-produced romantic comedy opened to 4.8 million at the box office after premiering at TIFF and receiving strong reviews. However, lead star and co-writer Eichner is bemoaning the lack of audiences showing up in theaters as “homophobic,” especially in “certain parts of the country.”
“Everyone who Isn’T a homophobic weirdo should go see Bros tonight! You will have a blast! And it is special and uniquely powerful to see this particular story on a big screen, esp for queer folks who don’t get this opportunity often. I love this movie so much. Go Bros!!!,” Eichner tweeted.
“Bros” centers on a podcast host (Eichner) who is tasked with writing a romance film that appeals to straight audiences, in a meta twist. In real life, Eichner penned the script for “Forgetting Sarah Marshall” with director Nicholas Stoller,...

Billy Eichner has said he is “disappointed” that “straight people didn’t show up for” his new movie Bros.
The film, which is being pegged as Hollywood’s first major gay romcom, has received acclaim from critics, but has not been a hit at the box office.
It is estimated to make just 4.8m (approximately £4.3m) – half of what Universal had hoped – during its opening weekend.
In a Twitter thread shared on Sunday (2 October), Eichner wrote: “Last night I snuck in and sat in the back of a sold-out theatre playing Bros in LA.
“The audience howled with laughter start to finish, burst into applause at the end, and some were wiping away tears as they walked out. Really. I am Very proud of this movie.”

Billy Eichner is getting the box office results of his movie Bros and although the film is underperforming, he’s “proud” of the work he did on the big screen.

Much of the discussion around the release of the Billy Eichner-starring, Judd Apatow-produced romantic comedy Bros has been about the semantics of its historic nature.
Yes, it’s one of the first major studio movies starring two gay leads played by two openly gay actors. Yes, it’s part of a small, but growing handful of LGBTQ-inclusive films upending the mainstream rom-com genre. But it’s another detail — frequently thrown out during the film’s press tour as a sign of its groundbreaking nature — that perhaps makes the film most notable. And that’s its all, openly LGBTQ+ cast.
It was a decision, star and co-writer Eichner told The Hollywood Reporter during the film’s New York red carpet premiere, believed was important from the pitch.

Paramount’s “Smile” debuted to a sizzling 22 million this weekend, easily topping the domestic box office. The horror film beat out the weekend’s other new wide release, Universal’s LGBTQ romantic comedy “Bros,” which landed in fourth place with a paltry 4.8 million bow.
“Smile” ranks as one of the better original horror openings of the year, beating out 20th Century Studios’ “Barbarian” (10 million) and Sony’s “The Invitation” (7 million). As the box office enters October, the horror genre will continue to take center stage with Universal’s “Halloween Ends” releasing in two weeks and hoping to cash in on the seasonal thirst for thrills and chills.
The box office result for “Smile” is a frighteningly good haul, seeing as it cost a measly 17 million to produce and had originally been seen as a streaming release.
“It’s honestly sensational,” said Chris Aronson, Paramount’s distribution chief. “I don’t like to use hyperbole,...

“Smile” has something grin about this weekend.
The creeper is projected to land a 19 million debut from 3,645 locations. It’s a fantastic start for the Paramount release, which carries a modest 17 million production budget. Compared to other original horror entries this year, “Smile” is coming in below Universal’s supernatural kidnap thriller “The Black Phone,” which kicked off with 23 million, but surging past 20th Century Studios’ “Barbarian,” which opened to 10 million.
“Smile” landed a mildly positive “B-” grade through research firm Cinema Score, though such a figure is standard for a horror release. The film has drawn good buzz with solid reviews, scoring a 79 from top critics on review aggregation website Rotten Tomatoes. Variety‘s chief film critic Owen Gleiberman praised the film in his review, writing that it “sets up nearly everything — its highly effective creep factor, its well-executed if familiar shock tactics, its interlaced theme of trauma and suicide — before the opening credits.

“Smile,” the unsettling Paramount horror about grins, murder and suicide, has earned 2 million from Thursday previews at the domestic box office. On the other side of the cinematic spectrum, Universal’s “Bros,” a romantic comedy with entirely LGBTQ cast, has grossed 500,000.
As the two movies face off at the box office this weekend, “Smile” is expected to earn the top spot over “Bros” and defending champ, “Don’t Worry Darling,” which has earned 25.5 million in its first week of release. The horror movie is projected to earn between 16 million and 20 million this weekend. Paramount will be smiling from ear to ear with a box office haul anywhere in that range, seeing as the low-budget fright fest cost a measly 17 million to make.
Meanwhile, “Bros” is targeting a box office debut of 8 million to 10 million this weekend. If projections hold, that’s a mediocre result. But the film only cost Universal 22 million to make,...

“Smile,” the horror film from Paramount and writer-director Parker Finn, made 2 million at the box office Thursday in its preview screenings from roughly 3,000 screens and that began at 7 p.m. It opens on 3,648 screens this weekend.
“Smile” opens alongside Universal’s “Bros,” the LGBTQ+ and R-rated romantic comedy from writer and star Billy Eichner. “Bros” brought in 500,000 at the box office in its own preview screenings from 2,700 theaters that began at 5 p.m. It opens on 3,350 screens this weekend.
Neither “Smile” or “Bros” is expected to break the 20 million mark this weekend, a disappointing trend for movies this month at the box office, though both have modest budgets and hope to turn a profit on the backs of strong reviews for each and some creative viral marketing, whether it’s eerily grinning fans at a baseball game or Eichner running down New York City streets with Paul Rudd and a pack of lesbians.

Nick Stoller and Billy Eichner’s “Bros” has plenty going for it beyond its allegedly boundary-breaking elements — Eichner, who co-wrote the film and stars in it, called it “the first gay rom-com ever released by a major studio” earlier this year, which is kind of true, but also not at all essential for enjoying the film on its own merits — and should (hopefully) prove to be box office catnip for audiences starved for funny, sexy, sweet romantic comedies.
“Bros” stars an entirely Lgtbq+ cast and centers on Eichner as a jaded podcast host who falls for Hallmark Channel alum Luke Macfarlane; the cast also includes Harvey Fierstein, Bowen Yang, Symone, Miss Lawrence, Guy Branum, Guillermo Diaz, Amanda Bearse, and Ts Madison.

Let’s get the historical housekeeping out of the way first: “Bros” is the first gay rom-com to be released by a major studio, an accomplishment with its share of codicils — there have been other queer films released by majors but they weren’t romantic comedies, there have been LGBTQ+ films of all stripes released by studios, but always by their indie shingle.
That’s a lot of historical baggage for any one film to have to carry, but it matters that the film succeeds at the rom-com just as much as it deserves notice for its narrowly defined status as “first.” Star and co-writer Billy Eichner spins a lot of plates here, crafting a hilarious and heartfelt film that also acknowledges the challenging and often hidden history of queer people in American society.

After years of declarations about the death of the romantic comedy, Sandra Bullock and Channing Tatum’s recent commercial hit “The Lost City” proved there’s still a place on the big screen for meet-cute stories.

Are we witnessing the start of the “Bros” Cinematic Universe?
Billy Eichner stars in the Universal Pictures rom-com as the director of an LGBTQ history museum who falls for a hunky attorney (Luke Macfarlane). After scoring positive reactions at TIFF, Variety was on the movie’s premiere red carpet in New York City Tuesday night to ask if a potential sequel could be in the works.
“Billy and I’ve been joking about [the possibilities], I’m not sure what it would be,” Macfarlane told Variety. “The truth is, in any relationship, those early months are the best. And then the reality of life sets in and you got to figure out how you’re going to spend all that time with somebody.”
He continued, “I trust the brilliance of Billy Eichner to come up with something clever for three years down the road.”
Macfarlane hopes a second movie would include musical scenes.

Plot: Bobby Leiber (Billy Eichner) is a gay influencer who’s unlucky in love. At forty, he’s never had a serious relationship, but things change when he meets Aaron (Luke Macfarlane), a commitment-phobic lawyer.
Review: A lot is being made about Bros being the first big, mainstream gay-romantic comedy to get a huge, 3000 theater release from a major studio. Produced by Judd Apatow and co-written (with star Billy Eichner) by Nicolas Stoller (Finding Sarah Marshall), the film is funny enough that it has a real chance of becoming a breakout hit. The audience at TIFF was left in stitches throughout, proving Universal may have a significant crowdpleaser on their hands. Whether or not it can overcome a market that’s becoming punishing for big-screen comedies is another question, but this has a shot at making a significant impact.

On those rare special occasions, a movie finds the power to unite a generation — and based on the audience reception at the Toronto International Film Festival premiere of "Bros," I think this Billy Eisner-led comedy is going to be one such film. In fact, I will be shocked if "Bros" doesn't take home TIFF's People's Choice Award.
Directed by Nicholas Stoller and written by Nicholas Stoller and Billy Eichner, "Bros" is an uproariously funny Queer rom-com about two "emotionally unavailable" (cis white) men. Eichner plays Bobby Lieber, a cranky, perpetually single 40-year-old podcaster known for dedicating his life to promoting LGBTQ+ history. When he crosses paths with Aaron (Luke Macfarlane), a very fit, very fine, man who is much less boring than he first appears, sparks fly. What follows is an unconventional love story that — although is diverts from and subverts many of the tropes we've grown accustomed to in...

Billy Eichner knows much has been written and lauded about Nick Stoller’s Bros being the first gay romantic comedy from a major Hollywood studio as it had its world premiere on Friday night at the Toronto Film Festival.
“But we have to acknowledge the decades of LGBTQ folks who did not get this opportunity, right? Ok, so everyone likes us now. But why did it take so long? I think that’s a question worth asking,” Eichner said at the Bros press conference in Toronto on Saturday morning.
The Bros star also paid tribute to Universal for getting behind the gay rom-com. “They could have wanted some soft, cheesy sitcom thing and we gave them a hard R Apatow/Stoller rom-com, which is very unapologetic, and they’ve gotten behind it in a major way, so we’re thankful,” Eichner said.

The major studio rom-com is back with a flourish, but it took Billy Eichner and Nicholas Stoller to prove the format still works, even if this time it is two gay men who are the ones who find love against all odds.
Although Bros is indeed making history as the first major studio film with an all LGBTQ principal cast, and the first to star and be co-written by an openly gay man, ultimately what it has to say about how hard it is to find the perfect someone to spend your life with is truly universal. Don’t get me wrong. Much of the humor in Bros comes from situations and attitudes specific to gay culture, but you don’t have to be gay to laugh out loud at most of it.
It must be seen in a theater as I did tonight with a rollicking full house at...

Friday was a big night for crowd-pleasing films at the Toronto International Film Festival, with Gina Prince-Bythewood’s epic “The Woman King” screening at Roy Thomson Hall to a huge ovation and Nicholas Stoller’s “Bros” premiering a few hours later for a raucous crowd in the Visa Screening Room at the Princess of Wales Theatre.
Both films thrilled the capacity crowds in TIFF’s two largest venues, “The Woman King” by putting a group of Black female warriors (led by Viola Davis) at the center of a rousing full-scale action movie and “Bros” by simply being, as co-writer and star Billy Eichner said, “an R-rated gay rom-com that’s going to be released in more than 3,000 theaters” by Universal.
And not that Eichner is competitive or anything, but when he came on stage with Stoller and the rest of the cast at the end of the screening, he encouraged...

Funny, sweet and occasionally pointed, Nicholas Stoller’s Bros (cowritten by star Billy Eichner) is a gay rom-com with a personality crisis. Though it makes lots of jokes at the expense of corporate types who would co-opt gay culture for prestige or water it down for straight consumption, it slowly reveals itself to be almost exactly like every guy-girl love story that has made money in the last thirty years. Described as satire in TIFF materials and elsewhere, it’s anything but. Forget movies that want to squeeze non-straight love into a heteronormative mode: Eichner wants his love story to be even more formula-bound — to be Ephronormative.
That will be exactly what many multiplex-goers want, and what many of the performer’s followers expect: Fans of the riotous Billy on the Street and the aptly named Difficult People might estimate that his love...

The Zurich Film Festival has selected some of the year’s most anticipated auteur films and high-brow Hollywood movies in its Gala Premieres section. Among other films, the fest screens the European premieres of “The Woman King,” with Viola Davis, and “Bros” by Nicholas Stoller. It also plays “The Son” by Florian Zeller.
“Of the 145 films in this year’s festival program, we are able to show more than a quarter of them as world or European premieres – more than ever before in the festival’s history,” Christian Jungen, artistic director, says.
“We are particularly proud to be holding the European premieres of Gina Prince-Bythewood’s historical epic ‘The Woman King,’ in which Academy Award-winner Viola Davis leads an international Black cast, as well as the gay romantic comedy ‘Bros’ by Nicholas Stoller, who cast all LGBTQ+ actors for the film. These two movies are a testament to the diverse talent working in Hollywood cinema,...
