David Byrne and Devo have unveiled the contribution to Noise for Now Vol. 2, an abortion access and reproductive rights benefit compilation landing everywhere on June 21st.
The song, “Empire,” was originally written by Byrne and Devo for Byrne’s collaboration-heavy 1997 solo album, Feelings. Two different collaborations came from those sessions — “Wicked Little Doll,” which ended up making the album, and “Empire,” which they’ve now unearthed for the Noise for Now comp.
With marching drums, regal horns, and a military-esque flair, Byrne and Devo satirize the American capitalist empire. Though there is a majestic air to the song, beneath the bright hues are some more sinister tones. “The strong alone will survive,” Byrne sings, less a promise and more a harrowing threat. Stream “Empire” below.
“‘Empire’ is an ironic capitalist fascist anthem and, at the time, I thought our version was just too mean and caustic for release,” Byrne said in a press release.

To think Dusk for a Hitman is kind of a biopic is unbelievable! Although director Raymond St-Jean’s film does clarify at the very beginning that most of the incidents are fictional—only the characters are taken from real life—the film can still be put in the biopic genre on a technicality. The treatment is very not-biopic-like, though, as for the most part, actor Eric Bruneau plays the role of hitman Donald Lavoie with a lot of swagger. No matter what situation he’s in, the man looks unbothered. It’s obviously a conscious creative decision, and it does work in the film’s favor.

Dusk for a Hitman begins in the autumn of 1979, with no-nonsense Hitman Donald Lavoie coolly taking care of two people by wiping them from the face of the earth, like nothing happened. Donald works for Claud Dubois,...

Faye Webster, the War on Drugs, and David Byrne and Devo have contributed tracks to the second Noise for Now benefit compilation, which will raise money for independent abortion providers across the country via the Keep Our Clinics campaign.

In her song, “At the Holiday Party,” St. Vincent describes a convivial scene in which everyone celebrating loosens up, maybe takes a few pills, and lets down their guard. It’s about enjoying a safe space and being yourself, and she brought that same vibe to Jack and Rachel Antonoff’s ninth annual Ally Coalition Talent Show on Tuesday. Video from the event shows her performing that track, off her 2021 album, Daddy’s Home, with some of the night’s other performers, including Jack Antonoff on piano and Bartees Strange on guitar.

A new crowd pleaser has made it to the Paramore set list. The band live debuted their single “Thick Skull” at the Spark Arena in Auckland, New Zealand, on Sunday night. The audience waved their hands in the air as frontwoman Hayley Williams prompted, “Come on out with your hands up.”
The song is the emotional closer of their latest LP, This Is Why. Paramore performed the song halfway through their Nov. 19 set.
This Is Why is Paramore’s sixth studio album, and their first since 2017’s transformative After Laughter.

Today, Swiss songstress Mary Middlefield returns with a brand new single entitled “Sexless,” alongside its mesmerizing accompanying music video. Her newest release is a brash, rollicking, and raunchy number that really puts it all out there in a form of vulnerability separate from her past material.
The release of “Sexless” follows the arrival of her debut album, Thank You Alexander, which dropped on March 3. Born mid-pandemic, Thank You, Alexander was Middlefield’s cathartic response to heartbreak and sadness. The album reflects her journey through themes of infidelity, romance, and abuse, with songs such as her debut track “Band Aid,” “Two Thousand One,” and “This One’s For You,” garnering support from music publications like Clash, Notion, and The Line Of Best Fit.

I was introduced to Wes Anderson in my early days of cinephilia. It was quite easy to get mesmerized by his distinctively aesthetic style, which happened in my case. I quickly became a fan, and in no time, I ended up watching most of his works. One thing that I particularly noticed is that as time went by, his work became more about flaunting his own style than the substance of it. My own cinematic senses also kept evolving, and with time, I sort of lost interest in Anderson’s brand of cinema. His recent works, the likes of The French Dispatch, and Asteroid City, didn’t help the case either. I still admire the aesthetics of Wes Anderson, but his cinema doesn’t excite me anymore, which is where I stood until I watched the four new shorts of Anderson on Netflix, all based on Roald Dahl’s short stories.

Wes Anderson’s Roald Dahl short story adaptations continue to grace us, and the third one is The Rat Catcher. This film is twisted, and Wes uses some brilliant lighting and zoom techniques to really bring out the horrifying nature of this story. Of course, all the actors are marvelous, and although this story is quite slow at the beginning, it quickly picks up pace in the third act with a remarkable twist. This is horror in Wes’s style. A sinister tale with a dark twist. The story comes from Dalh’s collection, Claud’s Dog. The Rat Catcher is brought to life through the narration of Richard Ayodae and is acted out by Ralph Fiennes and Rupert Friend. Ayodae is the realistic driving force of this story as he pushes us to see the more ethical side of thnigs.

Wes Anderson, the acclaimed director of The Grand Budapest Hotel, Moonrise Kingdom, and Fantastic Mr. Fox, has returned with his first Netflix project: The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar, a short film based on the 1977 short story by Roald Dahl. The film stars Benedict Cumberbatch as Henry Sugar, a wealthy and bored gambler who learns to see through cards after reading a book about a guru who can see without using his eyes. Henry then uses his newfound ability to cheat at casinos and donate his winnings to orphanages around the world.
The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar is a charming and whimsical adaptation that captures the essence of Dahl’s original story. Anderson’s signature style of quirky humor, colorful visuals, and symmetrical compositions is evident throughout the film, which also features a stellar cast of actors, including Ralph Fiennes as Roald Dahl himself, Dev Patel as Dr.

SAG-AFTRA has given approval to 39 independent productions to shoot despite their ongoing strike, including one film that will star Paul Rudd and Jenna Ortega.
Variety reports that the movie in question, called Death of a Unicorn, is excluded from the strike because its production studio, A24, is not affiliated with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP). The film is said to star Rudd and Ortega as a father and daughter who run over a unicorn on their way home. Filming is expected to begin soon in Hungary.
Another A24 film that’s set to go on amid the strike is David Lowery’s Mother Mary, which we know will star Anne Hathaway and Michaela Coel and feature music from Jack Antonoff and Charli Xcx.
