Editors note: On October 10, Deadline posted a story summarizing a Medium column written by Jim McKairnes, a former SVP Planning for CBS who’s spent the past 13 years teaching TV history at the college level. The title of his piece was “Scheduling a TV Memoriam: An Rip Of Sorts for a Once-In-Demand Television Industry,” which, among other things, said that scheduling “is the word that’s slowly becoming irrelevant to the medium, having less and less meaning as television itself comes to mean more and more.”
Both the column and our subsequent writeup struck a chord with current and former executives, many of whom were eager to defend today’s linear schedulers — even though pretty much everyone acknowledged how much the job has changed over the years. So we asked former Fox and NBC executive Preston Beckman, who worked for 35 years in audience research, strategic program planning and scheduling before...

Over 15 seasons, Fox’s “American Idol” became a cultural phenomenon, launching the careers of music superstars like Kelly Clarkson and Carrie Underwood, as well as judge Simon Cowell and host Ryan Seacrest. But not all of the drama occurred on stage as wannabes competed for the spotlight, said Sandy Grushow, the former Chairman of the Fox Television Entertainment Group who presided over both the broadcast network and the production studio from 1999 to 2004. Behind the scenes, Grushow revealed that the network had to tackle issues like time-zone troubles, a reluctant Simon Cowell, a hovering Rupert Murdoch and a disastrous party at.

In a surprise move, NBC's former syndication chief Ed Wilson has joined Fox Broadcasting Co. as president overseeing nonprogramming aspects of the network, including affiliate relations, advertising sales and integrated marketing partnerships. Wilson made headlines late last month with his decision to step down after four years at the helm of the NBC Enterprises and Syndication distribution unit. Wilson's departure on the eve of the completion of NBC's merger with Universal Studios -- which will vastly expand the company's syndication and TV distribution operations -- took the industry by surprise. At the time, Wilson said he was looking for a new challenge after more than two decades in the syndication business. At Fox, Wilson will report to Tony Vinciquerra, president and CEO of Fox Networks Group. Gail Berman, Fox Broadcasting's entertainment president, will continue to report to Peter Chernin, News Corp. president and chief operating officer and Fox Entertainment Group chairman, as she has since January when Sandy Grushow exited his post as Fox Television Entertainment Group chairman.
