The day that Faustino Asprilla single-handedly destroyed Barcelona lives long in the memory of Newcastle United fans. The match turned the bendy-legged Columbian into a cult hero despite him only scoring two goals in 10 games throughout the rest of the 1997-98 season.
Asprilla who did score an impressive nine goals in eleven European matches was sold back to Parma at the end of the season for £6 million but his performance on Wednesday, September 17th, 1997, will never be forgotten. Barcelona – who were managed by Louis van Gaal and won the La Liga, Copa del Rey and Super Cup titles that season – couldn’t handle ‘Tino’s’ sublime skills and his 22-minute hat-trick was the perfect reward for an exceptional night at St James’ Park.
Asprilla scored after 26, 30 and 48 minutes. The first was a penalty he won himself, the others headers from excellent crosses by a rejuvenated Keith Gillespie.

From Kevin Keegan’s ‘Entertainers’ side of the mid-nineties to Sir Bobby Robson’s Champions League chasers of the noughts and even current shot-shy crop under Alan Pardew’s stewardship; the Premier League era has been rich in memorable goals for Newcastle supporters.
In the last quarter-of-a-century we’ve been blessed with an array of domestic and exotic talent capable of spectacular scoring feats in a black and white shirt with a special few able to boast their own personal highlight reel while some players are remembered for an isolated moment of exceptional brilliance.
We all have our favourite goal. Some are the 30-yard screamers that sizzle into the top corner, others the product of a dazzling run and composed finish or a breathtaking piece of skill. All aesthetically pleasing in their own right.

Over the years Newcastle have handed out a fair share of pastings (walloping Sheffield Wednesday 8-0, no less) and imprinted their name upon some of the most memorable matches in football history.
But as with every football club they’ve also fallen victim to the occasional massacre or failed to produce the goods when it really mattered in a big game situation. Contrary to popular belief footballers are fallible beings.
We’ve had our hearts broken, tempers boiled and frustrations set to breaking point on numerous occasions during our black and white pilgrimage and there are moments we’d probably like to forget along the way.
But here are 15 Newcastle matches that you’ve probably obliterated from your memory and will stoke some serious emotion within you. We can only apologise for the this twisted trip down memory lane.

Leicester City extended their lead at the top of the Championship with a home win over Middlesbrough in very wet conditions thanks to goals from Jamie Vardy and Richie De Laet in the second half.
The Foxes were forced to make an early change following a collision between Liam Moore and the Middlesbrough goalpost as he tried to follow in Anthony Knockaert’s swinging free kick. He was taken off minutes later with a possible rib injury and was replaced by Marcin Wasilewski after just 9 minutes on the clock.
The torrential downpour played a major part of the game in the first half as the heavens well and truly opened up minutes before kickoff, and throughout the rest of the half. Both sides were unable to play their usual style of football due to the slippery surface and the scores remained 0-0 at the break.

Aston Villa are looking to sign last year’s Europa League top-scorer Libor Kozak in an effort to bolster their offensive line, according to Metro.
The Villains already boast Gabriel Agbonlahor, Nicklas Helenius and Christian Benteke up front but hope to sign the 24-year-old as a potential fourth option.
The Lazio striker failed to score in the Rome club’s Serie A campaign last season but proved a threat in European competition, notching an impressive 10 goals.
Paul Lambert’s side are not the first Premier League outfit to take an interest in the 6-foot-3 dangerman, with Sunderland expressing an interest last month.
Yet with the hours in the transfer window counting down, the West Midlands-based club are looking to be clear front-runners for the Czech international’s signature.

Veteran goalkeeper Shay Given is wanted by Liverpool as back-up to Simon Mignolet, according to the Sun.
The Aston Villa shot-stopper was set for a season-long loan to Doncaster after being informed he is deemed surplus to requirement at the Midlands club.
However, Liverpool are now in talks over a deal for the 37-year-old and sources claim the move is set to be given the thumbs up.
Given, who has played for Newcastle United and Manchester City, won the Fa Cup with the latter side before moving on to Villa following the emergence of Joe Hart in 2011.
The Republic of Ireland international has made 37 appearances with the Villans but only two in the Premier League last season after falling down the pecking order behind Brad Guzan.
Liverpool have allowed Pepe Reina to move to Napoli on loan and only have Brad Jones as back-up as things stand.

A preview of Aston Villa’s season including ‘player to watch’ and league prediction.
It seemed for a large part of last season, that Paul Lambert’s youth policy would backfire. But for the goals of Christian Benteke, that may well have been the case, but the fact that Lambert has convinced Benteke to stay with Villa, says a great deal about him as a manager and Villa fans will be optimistic ahead of the new season.
Villa completed their transfer dealings early, and again focused on youthful enthusiasm rather than experienced heads. Okore, Bacuna, Helenius, Steer, Luna and Tonev, may not be household names, but who had heard of Benteke this time last year? Keeping hold of the big Belgian may prove to be Lambert’s most important piece of business this summer. With the likes of Liverpool and Tottenham being linked with a move for him, most Villa...

Christian Benteke is set for crunch talks with Aston Villa manager Paul Lambert today, according to The Sun.
The highly-rated Belgian international emerged as a target for Tottenham Hotspur last week after stunning his club by handing in a transfer request, just one year after signing from Genk.
The 22-year-old reported back for training at Villa’s Bodymoor Heath base after sitting out the club’s three-match tour of Germany.
He has rejoined his West Midlands teammates ahead of their preparations for the new season, which kicks off next month, and boss Lambert hopes the youngster will still be wearing a claret and blue shirt come August.
The Scottish manager was quoted by Sky Sports as saying:
“While we’re hugely disappointed that Christian has put in a transfer request, it’s important that people appreciate we are trying to build something strong and vibrant here at the club, something...

After a busy January for The Magpies, which yielded no less than 5 new first-team players arriving on Tyneside, it only seemed appropriate to reflect on past mid-season windows, and the players which had moved to and away from Newcastle in recent winters. Admittedly, the January transfer window has gained criticism for forcing clubs into panic buying as the clock ticks down, and for the Black and Whites, it has brought somewhat of a mixed bag. The recent influx of players from across the channel seems to have (hopefully) improved the fortunes of Alan Pardew’s men, and resulted in 2 consecutive Premier League wins for the first time this season.
So after reflecting on the 2013 January transfer window, let’s start by looking at Newcastle’s 5 worst January deals in recent times…

Defender Nathan Baker (hamstring) and midfielder Ashley Westwood (cup-tied) are out, whilst goalkeeper Shay Given and midfielder Fabian Delph will be handed late fitness tests – the duo are suffering from hamstring and ankle complaints, respectively.
Centre-back Michael Nelson could make his debut for League Two outfit Bradford tonight after signing from Kilmarnock.

Much like my previous article pointing at players who in my humble opinion had be over rated for whatever reason, I’m now going to outline ten players who ply their trade in the English Premier League who I feel had a raw deal from the Si Games scouts. I’ll try to cover a variety of positions and teams rather then just the more prominent clubs and try to look at a variety of reasons why they have been under rated. I’ll look at form from previous seasons, if they have joined a new club and our playing out of position or if they are simply poorly rated through some form of technical hitch.
So without further ado here’s my list of ten under rated players, enjoy!
10. Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain (Arsenal)
Young Ox had great a successful 2011-2012 season, breaking into the Arsenal first team and featuring to good effect for England.

An uninspiring Newcastle United needed a moment of magic from gifted Frenchman Hatem Ben Arfa to overcome a dogged and determined (not to mention dirty) Aston Villa side in the Tyneside sunshine on Sunday afternoon, as the former Marseille man fired in a wonder-goal to level the scores at 1-1 and send the small pocket of travelling Villains away ruing missed chances.
Neither team was particularly exciting to watch, though Villa can probably claim to have enjoyed the best of a largely boring first-half in which Newcastle’s narrow 4-4-2 failed to take advantage of Villa’s shakey full-backs. But it could have been a lot different as early as the second minute, captain Fabricio Coloccini missing a good chance to score when Yohan Cabaye’s free-kick dropped to him ten or so yards out.
The Magpies then followed up this early pressure with a good shout for...

Newcastle United take on Aston Villa at St. James’ Park in a 4pm Premier League kick-off this afternoon. The match is not screened live on UK television.

Alan Pardew is once again unable to call upon Cheick Tiote as his calf injury has yet to heal. Dutch international midfielder and United’s only big money signing of the summer, Vurnon Anita, will once again deputise, as he did at Stamford Bridge. It’s that time of year again, the start of the Barclays Premier League 2012/13 season is just over a week away and with it comes that addictive little thing we call fantasy football. It’s all well and good talking the talk among your friends and family about your football knowledge, but there’s nothing more satisfying than proving it on the fantasy football field.
Yesterday we started our team-by-team guide with a look at the best and worst purchases from Arsenal for your fantasy football. We now turn our attention to Aston Villa…
Ones to Watch:

Spain could make history by becoming the only international team to win three major titles in a row when they meet Italy in the Euro 2012 Final on Sunday.
This is a look back at their journey to the Final and what to expect from the game at the Olympic Stadium in Kiev.
Their tournament began as it will finish; against Italy.
Vicente del Bosque elected to play without a striker in a 4-6-0 formation that included Cesc Fabregas as a makeshift frontman. His system allowed the six middle men to swap positions frequently, exchanging passes between one another until space opened up for a break away pass through the opposition’s back four.
Italy, playing a 3-5-2, coped well under the pressure and by half time the score remained 0-0. Italian wingers Christian Maggio and Emanuele Giaccherini were immense at falling back to clog up the penalty area...

Italy meet Spain in the Euro 2012 Final on Sunday, with Cesare Prandelli’s men the last capable of stopping the Spaniards winning their third consecutive major international trophy.
This is a look back at their journey to the Final and what to expect from the game at the Olympic Stadium in Kiev.
Their tournament began as it will finish; against Spain.
Cesare Prandelli took a chance on a 3-5-2 formation that he had been toying with in the absence of usual left-back Domenico Criscito, excluded to deal with a betting scandal surrounding him in Russia.
Meanwhile Vicente Del Bosque set out a 4-6-0, preferring six midfielders to an orthodox striker like Fernando Torres or Fernando Llorente.
While Xavi and Andres Iniesta were not completely stopped in their tracks, the Italian system worked efficiently enough to allow the Azzurri to keep the score at 0-0 by half time.

An Antonio Cassano header and an overhead kick from Mario Balotelli was enough to secure Italy qualification to the quarter finals against ten man Ireland.
It wasn’t as easy a task as many expected for the Azzurri with Ireland coming straight out of the blocks from the kick off however Kevin Doyle could not make the most of his opportunity in the opening minute.
Italy responded from the unexpected pressure early on with a collection of chances themselves. Thiago Motta fluffed his lines at the crucial moment after latching on to a poorly cleared Andrea Pirlo corner.
The experienced Antonio di Natale had his chance to shine after giving a place in the starting XI by Cesare Prandelli and the decision looked inspired with the Udinese forward ravaging the Ireland back line and having a good chance blocked by Sean St Ledger.

The Republic of Ireland became the first team to be eliminated from the 2012 European Championships as they fell to their worst defeat in a major tournament.
Goals from Fernando Torres (2), David Silva and Cesc Fabregas sealed a hard earned win for the defending champions, putting them in a strong position heading into their final game with Croatia.
For their part, Ireland were lacklustre in defence and showed no signs of ever taking the game to the Spanish. Another goal in the opening moments of the game set the tone and Vicente del Bosque’s team cruised to victory, making no fewer than 859 successful passes.
Ireland coach Giovanni Trapattoni had stuck to the 4-4-2 formation that was unsuccessful against Croatia, but brought in Simon Cox for Kevin Doyle at the front.

Spain could be forced to play an orthodox striker in tonight’s match, following signs that Cesc Fabregas won’t be able to shake off a thigh injury he picked up against Italy.
Meanwhile, the Republic of Ireland look set to field the same starting eleven as last Sunday.
Defender Richard Dunne was suffering from blisters at training in the week but has recovered well enough to start the match in Gdansk. Shay Given also missed some of the early sessions but is primed to start his second game of the tournament.

Queens Park Rangers manager Mark Hughes is preparing to make an ambitious move to sign Aston Villa’s veteran goalkeeper Shay Given.
The Irish number one, who is away with his country for the Euro 2012 tournament and fielded between the sticks in a crushing defeat against Croatia last night, has reportedly become disillusioned with life at Villa Park and is concerned they are heading in the wrong direction.
Hughes meanwhile is in the market for a new ‘keeper to replace last season’s number one Paddy Kenny and he still rates Given as one of the best in the league. Sparky brought the long-serving Newcastle United goalkeeper to Manchester City in 2009 and is prepared to offer £3 million for Given.
The 36-year-old however is tied into a long-term contract at Villa which doesn’t run out until 2016, when Given turns 40. It will be difficult for Hughes to sign the player for...

Two goals from Mario Mandzukic helped put Croatia on top of Group C in an excellent display against a very lacklustre Ireland team in Poznan.
The Croatian’s stamped their authority on the game just two minutes into the tie after Mandzukic capitalised on an eighteen yard box scramble, picking himself up and powering a header past Shay Given from fifteen yards out.
Ireland rallied their troops and managed an equaliser from the head of Leicester defender Sean St. Ledger nineteen minutes into the game. The centre back eluded the defensive efforts of Vedran Corluka to knock in a header on the far post from an Aiden McGeady free kick.
Croatia might’ve felt a bit hard done by conceding the goal after some defenders hesitated upon hearing what appeared to be the referee’s whistle but actually originated from the crowd. The whistle-blower was rife throughout the half but...

The Republic of Ireland kick off their Euro 2012 campaign in what could be their most winnable match from Group C as they prepare to face Slaven Bilic’s Croatia.
You have to go back a decade to recall the last time the Irish were part of a major tournament, in the 2002 World Cup, and it’s only their second appearence in the European Championships.
Despite being touted as rank outsiders for the tournament, Greece are the prime example that anything can happen in the Euro’s and Giovanni Trapattoni will be looking to turn heads with a couple of shock results.
However, in the cut throat business of qualification from the groups they will need to secure at least one win to have any viable chance of reaching the quarter finals or further. This opening fixture against Croatia provides Ireland with a platform for what might be a memorable tournament for them.

Save one man, Alex McLeish’s sacking did not surprise anybody when the axe finally fell on his tenure as Aston Villa boss today. While the ex-Rangers boss will claim injuries and tightening budgets were to blame, the fact is Aston Villa performed woefully short of expectations. Even with the sales of Ashley Young and Stewart Downing, Villa should never have flirted with relegation for so long.
McLeish just about managed to avoid taking down a second Birmingham club in succession, but it’s not all doom and gloom in the Holte End. Darren Bent, Richard Dunne and Shay Given are proven at Premiership level, and the one bright side of McLeish’s reign has been the promotion of some of Villa’s prodigious academy prospects. But who should Randy Lerner look to take over in the dugout?

Match preview ahead of Aston Villa vs Bolton Wanderers tonight in the Premier League. Kick-off time is at 7.45pm.
The very definition of a six pointer. Aston Villa currently sit five points above the relegation zone but should they lose to Bolton Alex McLeish’s team will only be three points above the Wanderers, having played a game more. What is more, their rivals for survival are all entering relative good periods of form. Wigan have picked up the scalps of Manchester United, Arsenal and Liverpool in recent weeks, Qpr have four in a row at home, Blackburn picked up a vital win and Bolton have games in hand on all those teams above them.
After this game Villa face a midlands derby at West Brom, host a struggling Tottenham that nevertheless is full of quality, and a final day trip to Norwich which could go either way. If Villa...

A cold day at Villa Park was in no way warmed by the football on show. Manchester City claimed the all important three points against Aston Villa thanks to a goal from Joleon Lescott, but it was ultimately a game that will be best forgotten by players and fans alike. An important win regardless though as it puts the Sky Blues back at the top of table. A terrible performance by the hosts though – they need to improve considerably and fast too if they want to stay clear from the drop zone.
Hardly a ‘must watch’ game by anyone’s standards – Manchester City haven’t looked as irresistible as they did in the first half of the season since, well, the first half of the season. The big question for Magpies boss Alan Pardew is whether or not he decides to start with new £10 million mega signing Papiss Cisse alongside leading scorer Demba Ba after their African Cup of Nations excursions. The Senegalese pair both returned to the North East on Thursday and should be fighting fit and raring to go but with the snowy weather bringing conditions Cisse might not be used to, will Pardew chuck him in for his first taste of Premier League football?
Most pre-match previews suggested Demba Ba would start the game alongside Leon Best with Cisse to come off the bench at around the hour mark.

The tightly packed run of festive fixtures come to an end this week and Aston Villa will be hoping to continue the momentum of their 3-1 win over Chelsea against shaky away opposition in the form of Swansea to break their home form hoodoo of late.
However whilst they possess the worst away record in the league, Swansea will be coming off the back of a very impressive performance against Tottenham. Brendan Rodgers will no doubt want his team to emulate that performance to possibly get the better of their opponents for their first win on the road to start 2012 with a bang.
The teams met less than a month and a half ago at the Liberty Stadium where they fought out to a 0 – 0 draw but it could be a much different result this time around.

Today’s match importance was put into the back of players, Welsh fans, and football fans in general’s minds after news broke of the unfortunate passing of Wales national team manager Gary Speed.
The resultant atmosphere at the Liberty could only be described as shocked and sadenned. The crowd passionately singing chants of “one Gary Speed, there’s only one Gary Speed” before kick off summed up their feelings aptly.
The events were respectably handled after a minutes silence was demonstrated with the utmost passion before kick off, some fans choosing to stay silent, some giving the Welshman applause and some parading him with the aforementioned chant. Either sentiment was done with utter respect. Suggestions were put forward to call the game off in Swansea, but the game took place as planned.

Harry Redknapp’s return to the dugout was a happy one as his side ran out comfortable 2-0 winners over a poor Aston Villa side and moved up to third in the table.
Two first- half goals from Emmanuel Adebayor were enough for the North London club in a match they dominated from start to finish.
Alex McLeish looked to have set up his side to contain Tottenham, naming five defenders in his starting eleven. Alan Hutton began on the right of midfield, presumably in an attempt to suppress Gareth Bale, but as Tottenham’s attacking players began to come to the fore Villa started to slip into a 5-4-1 formation with Gabriel Agbonlahor and Emile Heskey both playing much deeper roles than they are used to.
Redknapp named the same side for his third match in a row and on this performance you can see why.

Giovanni Trapattoni went into this match against Estonia knowing that his future as Republic of Ireland boss hung in the balance but he needn’t have worried as his side ran out comfortable 4-0 winners over nine man Estonia.
Goals from Keith Andrews, Jonathan Walters and a brace from Robbie Keane all but sealed Ireland’s qualification for Euro 2012 as their opponents saw Andrei Stepanov and Raio Piiroja sent off for the home side.
The opening ten minutes were a nervy and uneventful affair with very few chances. A tame shot form Jonathan Walters and a long range deflected effort from Konstantin Vassiljev were the only attempts on goal.
But then, virtually out of nowhere, Aiden McGeady’s inch perfect cross found Andrews who directed his header expertly into the bottom corner past the outstretched Pareiko to give the Irish an early lead (13).

The whole of the UK will be behind the Republic of Ireland tonight as they travel to the Le Coq Arena to take on Estonia in the Euro 2012 play off qualifier knowing that this two legged affair is the best chance they’ve had to qualify for a global tournament in years.

With Newcastle United striker Leon Best having pulled out of the squad it seems to be down to Stoke’s Jonathan Walters or West Brom’s Simon Cox, but with away goals very much on Ireland’s agenda tonight his selection could prove to be the crucial one.

Aston Villa versus West Bromwich Albion
22 October 2011
Villa Park
Attendance: 34,152
Paul Scharner scored the winning goal for Albion to secure back-to-back wins for Hosdgson’s men
A thrilling Midlands derby took place on Saturday afternoon as West Brom travelled to Villa Park looking to end a 32 year wait for a victory at Villa. And they managed to trash that fact as Hodgson’s side beat their opponents 2-1.
Aston Villa started the game well and pressed Albion up the pitch. Darren Bent had a early shot that blazed over Ben Foster’s bar. An early scare for the visitors. Moments later, Scotland playmaker Barry Bannan went for goal but his shot curled just wide.
Shane Long had to limp off as a result of a malicious Alan Hutton challenge. The Irishman, who already has three goals so far this term, is set to be out for quite a while and...

With United and City on level points coming into this weekend and The Red Devils poised for a tricky tie at Anfield, Manchester City boss Roberto Mancini can’t help but think this could be the weekend they climb above their neighbours in the fight for the title and a real chance for him personally to show his muscles.
With Carlos (I only ever wanted to be loved) Tevez given a two week Asbo, Mancini now only has three sulky strikers to worry about, Edin Dzeko, Mario Balotelli and Sergio Aguero. A home tie against Aston Villa could prove to be a welcome distraction as he looks for a big performance amidst the gloom of the Tevez saga and the challenge to his authority. The City faithful will be hoping for a comfortable win with one eye on their crunch tie with Villareal in the week ahead.

Young referee Michael Oliver shaped an unsurprisingly tight affair that finished 1-1 thanks to a last gasp equaliser for Queen’s Park Rangers, courtesy of an own goal by Aston Villa defender Richard Dunne. Barry Bannan had put the visitors ahead by converting a penalty after a soft challenge by Armand Traore who was later dismissed. It was perhaps justice then, that 10 man Qpr managed to grind out a deserved point.
All that was missing from a near-perfect start to the season was a home win for newly revitalised Queen’s Park Rangers, who welcomed Aston Villa to Loftus Road – where the Hoops have yet to score a single goal this season. This unfortunate record looked likely to end sooner rather than later though as Qpr had been looking very impressive with Neil Warnock seeming able to gel his new look squad after some lavish but intelligent summer spending. What better place to start this week than at the beginning? Kind of like Genesis, nothing to do with Phil Collins mind, I refer to that story of God creating the world in seven days. I’m not here for theological debate mind you, despite being told I am quite the pub philosopher.
Following a similar tack to Genesis, with Arsene Wenger assuming the role of God, the Frenchman plucked Arsenal from the doldrums of Bruce Rioch. Light from where there was once only dark, creating stars from nothing and so on and so forth.
The simile would be even more fitting if Genesis then detailed God’s master plan of removing the stars and replacing them with eco-friendly, energy saving light bulbs, a result of the seventh day resting on transfer deadline day. Why one would only be able to purchase light bulbs during the transfer window I don’t know,...

Wolves spent the second 45 minutes of this game clinging on for dear life as Aston Villa threw everything they had at Mick McCarthy’s men, to no avail. In a game with relatively few on chances on target, it was the Villans who took the game by the scruff of the neck, testing Wayne Hennessey in the Wolves goal a few times, but nowhere near as much as Alex McLeish would have liked. Wanderers held on for a good point however, moving up to the top of the table in the process for the second time in two weeks.
It is testament to the erratic nature of the opening weeks of the Premier League that this derby, usually a mid table affair, was contested by two teams in the top four; Wolves and Aston Villa starting the game in 3rd and 4th place respectively.

Aston Villa v Wolves
Prediction: 1-1
Wolves have won all three of their games this season and will go into this derby match high on confidence, however Villa are also in good form despite losing Downing, Friedel and Young over the summer. With both teams having only conceded one goal each, this could a very tight game.
Wigan v Qpr
Prediction:0-1
Wigan are probably the most underwhelming side in the league and will further prove it this weekend. Qpr should be buoyant, free from the shackles of the Carling cup, about to sign philosopher Joey Barton and recently taken over by Tony Fernandes who has offered many fans part refunds on their season tickets. It may not be the most entertaining of games but Qpr should just about come out on top.

Arsenal go into this huge game in the midst of their first injury crisis of the new season. On top of the suspended duo of Song and Gervinho, they’ll also be without Gibbs, Djourou, Wilshire and Rosicky meaning youngsters Frimpong, Jenkinson and Lansbury are in line for debuts and rare starts. The key for them will be to keep Van Persie involved and not allow Liverpool to isolate him.
Liverpool will play on the break with the pace of Downing and Saurez, they will also look to use Carroll’s height although on early evidence, Arsenal seem to have upped their game defending set pieces.
I still see Liverpool nicking a goal, and can’t see Arsenal troubling Liverpool in what will be a very dull match.

You’re right mate that referee was a right bleeping bleeper. Who’s that you say? Millwall boys at the tube station? Lucky I wasn’t there or else I’d have, I’d have really erm, mugged them off. Yeah…
The long wait is over. Saturday afternoons are fun again, well, Sunday afternoons if the satellite pie face man decides to show the match. England, rather predictably, were eliminated on penalties in the quarter finals. It seems that girls are no better than boys.
