Pluto Film has expanded its lineup ahead of this year’s EFM in Berlin with Generation 14plus screener “Huling Palabas.”
The Berlin-based sales company has also acquired the historical drama “Sima’s Song” by award-winning Afghan director Roya Sadat; Mehmet Akif Büyükatalay’s timely and suspenseful German social drama “Hysteria”; and Luxembourgish helmer Eric Lamhène’s “Breathing Underwater,” which explores violence against women.
Ryan Espinosa Machado’s Philippine coming-of-age drama “Huling Palabas,” described by Pluto Film CEO Daniela Cölle as “a charming LGBTQ debut,” follows a 16-year-old boy in 2001 who, while searching for his father in the most unlikely of places, becomes mystified by two movie-like characters who appear in his small town.
“Huling Palabas” is produced by the Philippines’ Tilt Studios, Terminal Six, Waf Studios and Studio Pulo.

The 40th edition of Sundance Film Festival kicks off today, and notably, queer and Himalaya-themed films take over the Asian/Asian diaspora slate of the mountain festival. In previous years, Sundance has been a frontier for Asian diaspora films. Last year alone saw a full slate of Asian diaspora films, with “Past Lives” (Celine Song), “Shortcomings” (Randall Park), “The Persian Version” (Maryam Keshavarz), and more, among others – there are considerably less Asian American films in the primary competition. This year, in the US Dramatic Competition, only one film, “Didi (弟弟)” by Sean Wang stands out amid the crowd.
Films about the Himalayas have taken center-stage in the World Cinema Competitions, however, with three titles this year: “Girls will be Girls” (Shuchi Talati), “Agent of Happiness” (Arun Bhattarai), and “Nocturnes” (Anirban Dutta). Queer Asian diaspora cinema is front and center this year as well, with “Layla” (Amrou Al-Khadi) and “Desire Lines...

September Film has acquired all rights for Belgium, the Netherlands and Luxembourg for “In the Land of Brothers,” which has its world premiere at the Sundance Film Festival in the World Cinema Dramatic Competition section.
The film is written and directed by Iranian filmmakers Raha Amirfazli and Alireza Ghasemi. Alpha Violet is handling world sales.
The film tells the story of three members of an extended Afghan family who start their lives over in Iran as refugees, but are unaware of the decades-long struggle ahead of them — and the ultimate price expected of them.
It is a journey across landscapes, cultures and generations as felt by the three lead characters: Mohammad, a young teenager and promising student; Leila, a woman isolated by geography; and Qasem, who bears the weight of his family’s sacrifice.

The trailer (below) has launched for documentary “Planet B,” which will have its world premiere at Visions du Réel film festival as part of its Grand Angle strand.
In the film, director and climate activist Pieter Van Eecke follows 13-year-old Bo, who has a seemingly perfect life: She lives in a peaceful neighborhood in Belgium, has a loving family and lots of friends, and is doing well at school. Like many young people, Bo questions everything and has a rebellious streak. As she follows the news, she becomes increasingly aware of the perilous state of the planet. She decides to take up the fight against climate change and joins Extinction Rebellion, along with her close friend Luca.
They occupy factory sites and highways, and soon grapple with the forces ranged against them. They are ignored, criticized and arrested, even spending time in police cells. As Luca proposes increasingly radical action,...

Sima’s Song
Word on the socials is that Roya Sadat kickstarted her next project with Greece aiding Afghanistan to double down efforts to recreate a Kabul backdrop. A Spain-Netherlands-France co-production, formerly known as “The Forgotten History,” Sima’s Song sees the friendship of two girls disrupted by their opposing ideals. Supported by Eurimages in early ’22, the sophomore film follows the Locarno preemed A Letter To The President (2018). Alba Sotorra, Frank Hoeve and Maeva Savinien produced the project. We’re thinking Venice for this one.

One year after she dazzled at the Cannes Festival, winning its Golden Eye for best documentary for “A Night of Knowing Nothing,” Payal Kapadia’s fiction debut “All We Imagine as Light,” has attracted the most potent production partner support of any project introduced at this year’s Locarno Match Me!
“Night’s” producers. Petit Chaos’ Thomas Hakim, Julien Graff in France and Ranabir Das (also Dp and editor on “Night”) at India’s Another Birth will produce “Light.”
Also on board, confirmed early July, is Oliver Pere at Arte France Cinéma. Further co-producers take in Zico Maitra and Aastha Singh, Frank Hoeve, Gilles Chanial.
A potential sign of a project positively courted by producers, the multilateral backing is hardly surprising. “All We Imagine as Light” is highly awaited after “A Night of Knowing Nothing,” a film in which “a palimpsest of dusky imagery, reflective narration and evocative score create...

“Brace Yourself” was selected for North American streamer Topic and Statement Films’ program to support, develop and finance projects from female African filmmakers. It was also selected for Thuthuka, a co-development collaboration between the Netherlands Film Fund and the National Film and Video Foundation (Nfvf) of South Africa.

The Rotterdam Film Festival’s facilitation and talent incubator wing Iffr Pro has teamed with the Sundance Institute, European Audiovisual Entrepreneurs and the Realness Institute for Creative Producer Indaba, a year-long professional development initiative aimed at supporting producers from Africa.
The inaugural batch of 17 emerging producers was announced Monday. They will participate in online workshops running Aug. 28-Sept. 11 that will cover project development and planning, project financing, PR and marketing, company strategic planning, leadership and advocacy.
A key aim of Indaba is to help African producers build financial instruments for co-production where they do not currently exist and forge new models of financing that could lead to the next wave of African cinema.
“The media landscape of Africa is swiftly changing and the importance of local producers that have the training to catalyze the growth of their local markets is paramount,” said Indaba African group leader and Realness Institute co-founder Mehret Mandefro.

This year’s Berlinale is full of features from filmmakers all around that world that have Dutch producers on board. Some are documentaries, some are dramas, but each one has a Dutch imprint. Geoffrey Macnab from The Independent reports.
‘Monos’ by Alejandro Landes and Alexis Dos Santos
Monos, directed by Alejandro Landes and Alexis Dos Santos, is screening both in Sundance and Berlin. This is a kidnap drama involving child soldiers set deep in the Colombian jungle. Amsterdam-based Lemming Film discovered the project at CineMart in 2016. “We were immediately drawn by the premise of the project and of course by directors Alejandro Landes and Alexis Dos Santos, whose work so far has been really impressive,” says Lemming’s CEO Leontine Petit.
There are several other co-producers on board, among them La Franja from Colombia itself, Campo Cine from Argentina, Mutante Cine in Uruguay, and Pandora from Germany. Petit knew it...

Berlin-based Pluto Film has acquired international sales rights to Mary Jimenez and Bénédicte Liénard’s “By the Name of Tania” ahead of its world premiere in the Generation section of the Berlin Film Festival.
Set in the gold mine-gashed landscape of northern Peru, “By the Name of Tania” tells the true story of a young woman who is forced into prostitution after failing to escape the constrictions of her village.
The hybrid documentary feature mixes real eyewitness accounts and was shot with non-professional actors on the actual locations.
“‘By The Name Of Tania’ is a strong, honest and personal film. It combines a clear signature with a well-told story and authentic aesthetics,” said Pluto Film’s Daniela Chlapíková, adding that the film depicted the events and characters with realism.
“By the Name of Tania” was produced by Hanne Phlypo at Belgian outfit Clin d’Oeil Films, in co-production with Julie Freres for Dérives,...
