Deadline is told that Ikoko is no longer involved with the project, although details were scant. Discovery of Witches scribe Lisa Holdsworth is now sole creator. Reps for Ikoko and the show declined comment.
The series was unveiled with fanfare almost two years ago to the day. Produced by Lost Boys and Fairies maker Duck Soup Films, it follows an eclectic group of dance students as they navigate the intense highs and lows of coming of age in today’s complex world. Film4’s annual budget has dropped from £25 million to £22.5 Million for 2024.
The Poor Things backer confirmed the reduction with us, adding that the figure was “in line with recent years.”
“Film4 is the largest Psb funder of independent film in the UK. Our budget is set annually, in line with Channel 4’s financials, to ensure we can best deliver sustainable, long-term support to the industry,” a spokesperson said.
“We have recently had some of our most prolific and successful years, and we are committed to maintaining a similar level of support in the future, backing around 10-12 films per year, maintaining our cultural impact and continuing to champion the most distinctive and innovative filmmaking talent.”
Film4’s reduced budget is still higher than BBC Film, which has remained at around £11M (including overhead) for the best part of a decade, and the BFI Filmmaking Fund, which sits at around £18m a year.

Deadline can reveal that the vast majority of Channel 4 staff will receive a bonus this year around half the level of 2023, including CEO Alex Mahon, content boss Ian Katz and Chief Operating Officer Jonathan Allan. The trio will see their pay reduced by around 30% to 40% from last year’s record highs, we are also told.
The decision on bonuses was recently rubberstamped by the network’s Remuneration Committee and a Channel 4 spokesman told Deadline the bonus was calculated from the network’s “annual targets, remit and business goals.” This decision to award them bonuses was made in the past few weeks as the redundancy program has been in full flow – the biggest such program initiated by the broadcaster for 15 years.

Protests on the red carpet: The build-up to the 74th Berlin Film Festival has been highly politicized and Thursday evening’s opening ceremony was no different. The ceremony began with a red carpet awash with political statements. The festival held what it described as a ‘Filmmakers for Democracy, Diversity, and Peaceful Togetherness’ demonstration featuring between 50 and 60 filmmakers. Meanwhile, a series of attendees used their time in front of media pens to display their own political messages. The most eye-catching included American filmmaker Eliza Hittman, last at Berlin with her Silver Bear-winning Never Rarely Sometimes Always, who had ‘ceasefire now’ stitched to the back of her dress. Exclusive: Channel 4 has defended the provenance of The Couple Next Door amid concerns from producers that it was penned by the husband of the UK broadcaster’s head of drama.
Two sources told Deadline that The Couple Next Door has been a talking point in the British drama community in recent days after producers joined the dots between Channel 4 drama chief Caroline Hollick and screenwriter David Allison.
Channel 4 has argued that Hollick recused herself from the commissioning process, but it has not stopped the broadcaster’s suppliers from questioning if nepotism played a part in the Starz co-production making it to screen.
Despite being recused, Channel 4 said The Couple Next Door was “commissioned by” Hollick in a press release announcing the series in March. She was also quoted in the press notice, trumpeting the drama as an “addictive, emotional roller-coaster.” Her relationship with Allison was not declared.

Ben Wheatley’s zombie series Generation Z is building its bite.
UK broadcaster Channel 4 has unveiled a first look at the six-part series, which is currently being filmed in Wales by The Forge, the outfit that produced Help and Roadkill.
Generation Z, Wheatley’s first TV series, boasts a cast including Robert Lindsay (Wimbledon), Sue Johnston (Downton Abbey), and Anita Dobson (Call The Midwife).

A group of teenagers are caught up in the virus when one of the gang’s grandmothers becomes infected and attacks her.
Here’s the logline: “Generation Z is about intergenerational justice and community breakdown that boldly satirizes a world where truth is stranger than fiction, exploring not just the political fault lines in our society but...

The first trailer for “I Am Ruth” – the feature-length drama featuring Kat Winslet acting opposite her real-life daughter Threapleton – has dropped.
In the drama, which was conceived and developed by Winslet and filmmaker Dominic Savage, the “Titanic” actor plays Ruth, a concerned mother who struggles to help her teenage daughter Freya (Threapleton) as she becomes increasingly consumed by social media.
In the trailer, the duo are seen growing apart, with Freya withdrawing further into herself despite Ruth’s attempts to connect with her. Winslet and Threapleton embody a typical mother-daughter relationship in the trailer with shouting, door-slamming and hugging. But eventually Ruth takes the dramatic step of forcing Freya to see a counsellor and confiscating her phone. “It’s what’s making you ill,” Ruth tells her distraught daughter. The impact on the rest of the family, including what appears to be Freya’s brother, is also depicted.

The real-life mother-daughter duo star as a fictional family in the feature-length special, which is set to air in the U.K. on broadcaster Channel 4 this winter.
Winslet plays concerned mother Ruth who grows alarmed as her teenage daughter Freya (Threapleton) becomes consumed by social media and the pressures that come with it. As Freya retreats further into herself, her relationship with Ruth becomes increasingly strained.
Winslet conceived the project with filmmaker Dominic Savage as “a story for our times about the endemic mental health crisis affecting young people.” Winslet and Savage developed and co-authored the drama together. It will be broadcast as part of female-led anthology series ‘I Am,’ which Savage created.

“Sex Education” producer Eleven has set a new thriller series titled “I.D.” at Channel 4 written by Genevieve Barr (“The Silence”).
The eight-part mystery tells the story of a young deaf woman called Emily who spies her neighbor photographing her, which soon leads her on a journey into her own past. “This leads her to explore what she might have done to warrant this unwanted attention, while simultaneously beginning a dance with a stranger that is as exhilarating as it is dangerous,” reads the logline.
“I.D.” is described as a “love letter to being deaf.”
“’I.D.’ is a journey into who we are and how people view us,” said Barr in a statement. “Eleven gave it a home when I was starting out and I’m delighted we’ve found it a broadcaster with Channel 4 who are pathfinders in fearless and inclusive storytelling. It is a privilege to be living...

The BBC has unveiled Lindsay Salt, Netflix UK scripted commissioner, as its next Director of Drama.
Salt replaces Piers Wenger, who departed to A24 earlier this year to run its international division alongside former BBC Films boss Rose Garnett. BBC Drama Commissioner Ben Irving was doing the role on an interim basis and had been tipped as frontrunner to take it permanently along with Channel 4 Drama Head Caroline Hollick.

She used to run development at Sky Drama, during which time she also worked with Mensah.
Salt will report to to BBC Chief Content Officer Charlotte Moore, who said the move “heralds an exciting new era for BBC drama.

Peter Kosminsky imagined a world without Boris Johnson long before anyone else could.
The master dramaturge’s latest offering, Channel 4 and Peacock’s “The Undeclared War,” is set in 2024, in a dicey political landscape where Johnson has been usurped after losing a no-confidence vote, and the new prime minister (coolly played by Adrian Lester) has his share of national security issues with the Russians.
The U.K.-Russia cyberwarfare drama, which premiered in Britain last week, has received flak from some critics who bemoan the volatile nature of writing political dramas, especially when Johnson appeared to be clinging on to power, but on this side of the Pm’s July 7 resignation, “The Undeclared War” is a welcome take that glimpses life beyond Britain’s present political quagmire.

Rocks writer Theresa Ikoko is creating a Channel 4 coming-of-age drama with A Discovery of Witches scribe Lisa Holdsworth about an eclectic group of dance students.
Dance School (working title) will provide 10 industry training placements to individuals with no previous TV experience.
Produce by Channel 4 Growth Fund-backed indie Duck Soup Films and inspired by true stories from inner-city Leeds, the eight-part show will follow the students as they navigate the intense highs and lows of coming-of-age in today’s complex world. Teacher Jackie heads up the Saturday class and brings together the core friendship gang and dance ensemble: Puppy, Kobby, Liam, Tim, Francesca, Tash and Nohail.
Street casting and recruitment starts in the summer and the production will shoot in the Autumn in and around Leeds.
The show has shades of Ikoko and director Sarah Gavron’s approach to BAFTA-winning Rocks, which cast young non-actors in inner-city London in what was an extensive process.

Julie Walters (National Treasure) and Clarke Peters (The Wire) are fronting a dark, irreverent drama based around a death pact for broadcaster Channel 4.
They will star in Clerkenwell Films’ six-part Truelove, which is written by from Iain Weatherby (Humans) and co-created with Charlie Covell. She wrote the tonally similar Channel 4 and Netflix drama The End Of The F***ing World — another Clerkenwell production.

Walter will play Phil, an ex-senior police chief enjoying a comfortable if boring retirement, and Peters plays Ken, a divorcee and ex-special forces vet who feels similarly at sea. The pair are childhood sweetheart who never quite managed to forget each other.

The Philomena and Lost King star told Deadline the aim with Chivalry, which comes from his BBC Studios-backed indie Baby Cow, was to make a show about “love and respect” that could make people laugh, while using humor to open up a wider debate.
Coogan and Solemani play the lead roles in Chivalry, having come up with the concept during the filming of Michael Winterbottom’s Greed when they found themselves debating the issues regularly and at length.
