“Encanto” star John Leguizamo has signed on to executive produce short film “Triggered” from Tara Westwood.
“Triggered,” which stars Westwood, Isiah Whitlock Jr. (“Da 5 Bloods”), Caitlin Mehner (“Dopesick”) and Robert John Burke (“Law & Order Special Victim’s Unit”), deals with themes of gun violence.
“’Triggered’ is exceptional in that it doesn’t preach and never hits you over the head with a message – but I don’t know how anyone can watch it and not agree that we need to do things differently,” said Leguizamo. “Most Americans, even NRA members, already support basic changes such as improved background checks and this is a conversation that we must have. I’m so excited to be a part of this powerful piece directed and starring Tara Westwood.”

“I believe that a big reason why this ambitious idea of throwing a music festival in Harlem in which somewhere between 70,000 to 90,000 people every weekend would see performances was so that there was something joyous and hopeful for people at that point were kind of at the end of their rope,” Summer of Soul (Or When the Revolution Could Not Be Televised) director Ahmir “Questlove” Thompson says about the importance the 1969 Harlem Cultural Festival had to a Black America ravaged by violence and assassination.
“It was a healing moment, if you will,” Thompson added during the film’s panel at Deadline’s Contenders Film: The Nominees event. The Roots drummer, bestselling author, musicologist and now Oscar nominee made his feature directorial debut with the feature documentary.
Having premiered at the virtual Sundance Film Festival in 2021, Summer of Soul took home the Grand Jury Prize and Audience Award in the documentary categories in Park City.

One of Jeffrey Lurie’s first jobs was cooking hot dogs and selling soda at General Cinema, his family’s chain of drive-in movie theaters. When not working the grill or pouring fountain drinks, he was tasked with checking the trunks of customers to see if anyone was sneaking in friends without buying tickets.
Decades later, Lurie has a very different day job, as the billionaire head of the Philadelphia Eagles, guiding the franchise to a Super Bowl championship in 2018 and earning a reputation as one of the most progressive owners in the NFL. He’s used his platform to promote charitable work for causes ranging from improving educational opportunities to police reform. Now, he’s turning his attention to another love — the movies, where he hopes to use cinema to shine a spotlight on social justice issues.

IFC Films has acquired North American rights to “The Meaning of Hitler,” Petra Epperlein and Michael Tucker’s thought-provoking documentary about the enduring cultural fascination with the Nazi dictator and its resonance on contemporary politics.
Filmed over the course of four years, the documentary is set against the backdrop of the current rise of white supremacy and anti-Semitism, and explores the myths and misconceptions of our understanding of the past. Shot in nine countries, “The Meaning of Hitler” traces the dictator’s movements, his rise to power, and the scenes of his crimes through the lens of key locations in his life.
The documentary’s framework is inspired by Sebastian Haffner’s 1978 best-selling book of the same title, which dismantled the legend surrounding Hitler’s life through interviews with subjects including Martin Amis, Saul Friedländer, Richard Evans, Yehuda Bauer and famed Nazi hunters Beate and Serge Klarsfeld.

“With an extraordinary team of collaborators, I was compelled to mount this production when I saw the scale of incompetence and political corruption by the Trump Administration in the face of a global pandemic,” Gibney said. “Now we know that by Feb. 7, Trump knew that Covid was, in his words, ‘a deadly virus.’ But instead of working to protect the American people by containing the virus, the current...

Alex Gibney has a new documentary film called “Totally Under Control” aimed at President Trump’s response to the coronavirus pandemic. Neon will release the movie this October ahead of the general election, the distributor announced Thursday.
Gibney, an Oscar winner for “Taxi to the Dark Side,” has been quietly filming the documentary alongside co-directors Ophelia Harutyunyan and Suzanne Hillinger for the past four months. In “Totally Under Control” they ask the simple question as deaths — which currently number 190,000 in the U.S. — have continued to rise, “How did this happen?”
Gibney criticizes carelessly designed lockdowns and how the economic effects of those lockdowns have led to 23 million job losses, not to mention widespread hunger, dislocation and a runaway federal deficit. The documentary asserts that much of this destruction could have been avoided if the federal government had followed guidelines and acted properly, even as the Trump administration makes a...

Update (11:40am Et): Martin Scorsese has issued the following statement on Varda:
“I seriously doubt that Agnès Varda ever followed in anyone else’s footsteps, in any corner of her life or her art…which were one in the same. She charted and walked her own path each step of the way, she and her camera. Every single one of her remarkable handmade pictures, so beautifully balanced between documentary and fiction, is like no one else’s—every image, every cut… What a body of work she left behind: movies big and small, playful and tough, generous and solitary, lyrical and unflinching…and alive. I saw her for the last time a couple of months ago. She knew that she didn’t have much longer, and she made every second count: she didn’t want to miss a thing. I feel so lucky to have known her. And...

Alison Klayman at Magnolia Pictures on The Brink: "I hope it can be both, very contemporary and also kind of evergreen." Photo: Anne-Katrin Titze
Highly aware of the camera, Steve Bannon taunts and teases the filmmaker and us in The Brink. For a little longer than a year, Alison Klayman had access to business meetings and lunches all over the world and flew with her subject and his associates on private planes to various speaking engagements. Fall 2017 to fall 2018 was particularly eventful in the news and what unfolds on screen vérité style is a fascinating portrait of a man observed.
The Brink, produced by Marie Therese Guirgis, shows the concrete, not to say banal, quotidian business of this controversial figure. Politics do not fade into the background, quite the opposite. With clever editing by Brian Goetz and Marina Katz and aware choices of what to highlight, Klayman...

Given his skill at manipulating the press, it’s totally understandable why Steve Bannon would agree to or even embrace being the subject of not just one but multiple documentaries. But where Errol Morris’ 2018 film “American Dharma” aimed to interrogate and deconstruct Bannon’s poisonous philosophies head on, “The Brink” embeds filmmaker Alison Klayman (“Ai Weiwei: Never Sorry”) in his daily life for months on end, observing his methods, and eventually, exposing the efficacy of tactics that have rhetorical foundations built on quicksand.
Following Bannon as he drifts both politically and professionally from the good graces of “reputable” Republicans while positing himself as a proponent and prognosticator of their increasingly divisive values, Klayman’s film showcases the qualities that make Stephen Bannon such an effective political strategist even as it suggests that its success is as likely to eat his own future alive as the future of democracy itself.

By Sydney Levine & Peter BelsitoThe film follows Steve Bannon from when he left his Trump affiliation in summer 2017 to recent months.
Much gentler than the Erroll Morris’ picture American Dharma which nobody wanted to pick up for distribution because his insane brilliance is there for everyone to cringe upon seeing, this fly on the wall portrayal of Bannon sometimes is spread too thin with activities of a dangerous man constantly on the move and whose entire being is dedicated to pushing forward his vision.
Producer of The Brink, Marie Therese Guirgis, worked with Steve Bannon when he was head of the Us film distribution company Wellspring. They kept in touch and over many years and requests, she finally persuaded him to make this movie.
Review by Peter Belsito:
The director/ cinematographer, Alison Klayman, had seemingly free access to the man and his meetings.

Director Alison Klayman’s upcoming documentary The Brink chronicles Donald Trump’s former chief strategist Steve Bannon through the 2018 midterm elections, and as seen in this trailer, the provocateur hasn’t stopped provoking since leaving the White House.
“I’m going to get so crushed in this film,” the ever-rumpled Bannon says to Klayman’s camera. The Magnolia Pictures release had its world premiere at this year’s Sundance Film Festival. Producers are Marie Therese Guirgis and Alison Klayman.
The logline: When Steve Bannon left his position as White House chief strategist less than a week after the Charlottesville “Unite the Right” rally in August 2017, he was already a notorious figure in Trump’s inner circle and for bringing a far-right ideology into the highest echelons of American politics. Unconstrained by an official post — though some say he still has a direct line to the White House — he became free...

One of the unfortunate byproducts of living under the Trump administration is being necessarily aware of ancillary right-wing partisans that have contributed to his reign. Familiarity with names like Roger Stone, Paul Manafort, Stephen Miller, Sebastian Gorka, Milo Yiannopoulos, and Alex Jones are all but mandatory for understanding the ideological machinations behind such a presidency, even if the ultimate conclusion can be accurately reduced to, “The cruelty is the point.” When the inmates have taken over the asylum, it’s important to know their various afflictions.

There are few acquisition festivals quite like Sundance, where movies enter as unknowns and leave as Oscar hopefuls with million-dollar deals backing them. 2018 titles that went on to critical and financial success included “Searching,” “Sorry to Bother You,” “Eighth Grade,” and “Blindspotting”; though not as high-profile as the likes of “Call Me by Your Name” or “Beasts of the Southern Wild,” such films serve as a reminder of Park City’s importance in shaping the year in movies.
Running from January 24 – February 3 in Park City, Utah, this year’s edition of the festival is sure to produce a number of buzzworthy offerings. Here’s our constantly updated compendium of every Sundance 2019 acquisition.

The Sundance Film Festival has added the world premiere of the documentary “Leaving Neverland,” which focuses on sexual abuse allegations against the late pop star Michael Jackson.
The movie, produced and directed by Dan Reed, describes how Jackson allegedly began long-running relationships with two boys, aged 7 and 10, and their families while at the peak of his fame. The two, now in their 30s, claim that they were sexually abused by Jackson, and reveal how they came to terms with it years later.
Representatives for the Jackson estate issued a one-sentence statement in response to Wednesday’s announcement: “This is yet another lurid production in an outrageous and pathetic attempt to exploit and cash in on Michael Jackson.”
“Neverland” refers to the Neverland Ranch in Santa Barbara County, Calif., where Jackson lived between 1988 and 2003. The property was raided by law enforcement in 2003 in connection with molestation accusations against Jackson by a 13-year-old boy.

Magnolia Pictures has acquired “The Brink,” a fly-on-the-wall documentary about Steve Bannon, the controversial advisor to President Donald Trump. The film follows Bannon as he tries to export his fiery brands of populism and nationalism beyond the borders of the United States.
“The Brink” is directed by Alison Klayman, a filmmaker best known for “Ai Weiwei: Never Sorry,” a 2012 look at the Chinese artist and activist. The sale was announced prior to “The Brink’s” debut at this year’s Sundance Film Festival.
Klayman was able to get what is being billed as “unprecedented access” to the conservative activist and former Breitbart head. In press materials, the studio said that the film “employs a vérité approach that aims to expose Bannon’s tactics, including his relationship with the media.” Magnolia plans to release the film theatrically this spring.

Stephen K. Bannon’s ascension from Breitbart News executive to President-elect Donald Trump’s chief White House strategist and senior counselor shocked the world, in no small part because the alt-right figure has no background in government management. However, it’s not the first time Bannon has attempted to lead an industry outside of his professional experience. Bannon’s new role may be an ideal platform for propagandistic ambitions, but his career in independent film — first in distribution, then production — casts doubt on how much he believes in any of it.
Ten years ago, Bannon oversaw the distribution of independent films released by Wellspring Media, a company that supported a wide range of international cinema as well as gay-themed and other “transgressive” titles. Movies acquired and released under his tenure include the experimental Lgbt documentary “Tarnation” and “Going Upriver: The Long War of John Kerry,” a pro-Kerry documentary that opened during the 2004 election.

I sat in the Amazon Studios row at the Park City Library with execs Roy Price, Ted Hope and the Amazon team, who are finalizing a deal to acquire their first documentary pickup, "Author: The Jt Leroy Story." Backed by A&E IndieFilms, Brett Ratner’s RatPac Documentary Films and Vice, writer-director Jeff Feuerzeig's documentary weaves in and out of the mind of novelist Laura Albert, who finally steps forward to explain why she created several alternate personas, including novelist Jt (Jeremiah Terminator) LeRoy. Marie Therese Guirgis, Head of Documentary at Ratpac Entertainment, read Feuerzeig's project proposal two years ago, "one of the most brilliant I've ever read," she told me on the phone. "We jumped right in, it all came together with Vice and A & E. It's been a long crazy journey." Albert's many personas started first as characters on the written page, then as characters she would deploy on the phone.

Opening within a month of each other is the Audrey Tautou starring drama "Thérèse" and the Elizabeth Olsen fronted thriller "Therese." The title (minus the accents on the former) isn't the only thing the two projects have in common: Both are period projects, headlined by recognizable stars and based on famous French novels (Tatou's project is based on "Thérèse Desqueryroux" by François Mauriac; Olsen's, on Emile Zola's scandalous novel, "Thérèse Raquin") centered on repressed women stuck in a loveless marriages. When the Tautou film, which marks the final film of the late Claude Miller, premiered back at the 2012 Cannes Film Festival as the closing night film, it went by the book's title, "Thérèse Desqueryroux," so we called up Mpi Pictures head Marie Therese Guirgis (who's releasing the film) to suss out why they chose to go with a potentially conflicting title instead of sticking with the old one. "Well,...

The only award it was nominated for and didn't win was Best Actor where Bradley Cooper lost to John Hawkes for The Sessions, but that's only a minor blip on the radar when you win this big. Among the early awards handed out, Stephen Chbosky's The Perks of Being a Wallflower won for Best First Feature while Derek Connolly won for Best First Screenplay for the romantic sci-fi film Safety Not Guaranteed. Then the Twitterverse exploded with a Best Supporting Actor win for Matthew McConaughey and his work in Magic Mike, which, for a time, seemed like it may be able to eek into that last Supporting slot at the Oscars. No dice, a Spirit Award it will have to be.
