The live-or-die situations of slasher movies typically center around young folks. It’s also common to see those threats occur in or around a school setting. So while most slashers have had a tendency to fixate on teenagers, the new Swedish movie The Conference refreshingly targets a group of adults. In this Scandi-flavored, hunt-and-kill story — one adapted from a novel written by Mats Strandberg — the would-be victims encounter danger during a work conference. However, no team-building exercise could have prepared them for what comes next.
Slasher enthusiasts will detect heavy notes of Christopher Smith’s Severance when watching this movie. Basic similarities aside, the eventual massacre in this story is a great deal more personal for the villain; the inevitable slaughter isn’t incidental. Yet even before the killer shows up, tensions are already running high in Patrik Eklund’s movie. These municipal employees’ work outing — really more of a...

The characters in the Norwegian slasher franchise Cold Prey may be accustomed to harsh and wintry climates, but they’re not prepared for a pickaxe-wielding killer with almost superhuman stamina. The first stab in this successful trilogy made its way into theaters in 2006, on a Friday the 13th, no less. Five characters go on a ski trip in Jotunheimen, and when someone gets injured, they find shelter at the abandoned ski lodge on the mountain. As they wait for help to come, the group slowly realizes the place isn’t so empty after all. A serial killer inhabits the old hotel with a long and dark history. This ruthless and stoic assailant, referred to as the Mountain Man, then proceeds to butcher his unwelcome guests.
Slasher movies are typically associated with hot weather. Thoughts of summer camps, sweaty small towns, and warm woods enter one’s head when talking about this popular subgenre.

Director: Roar Uthaug. Review: Adam Wing. In 2006 Roar Uthaug took us on an unnerving journey into the heart of fear. Cold Prey wasn’t just a slasher movie; it was pretty much the perfect slasher movie. Beautiful cinematography and relentless scares combined to create one of the smartest horror movies of the year. Uthaug returned as co-writer – along with regular collaborator Thomas Moldestad – for the highly anticipated sequel, a follow up that delivered on almost every level. Moldestad isn’t the only regular returning to the fold, scream queen Ingrid Bolso Berdal (Cold Prey’s femme fatale) takes centre stage in the short but sweet action thriller, Escape. Ten years after the Black Plague ravaged their country; a poor family sets out on a journey to find a new home. On a remote mountain pass they’re attacked by a band of vicious thugs, led by the devilishly devious Dagmar...

Foreign Objects travels the world of international cinema each week to look for films worth visiting. So renew your passport, get your shots, and brush up on the local age of legal consent, this week we’re heading to… Norway! When I reviewed Cold Prey at the beginning of the year (here) I was surprised to find it was such an entertaining, suspenseful, and well made slasher film. The most impressive thing about it of course was the fact that the movie is Norwegian. Who knew? It was more than a little redundant of the genre, but still managed to stand on it's own as a pretty cool little horror film. It was also a huge hit across Europe meaning a sequel was guaranteed... but could it possibly be any good? Cold Prey 2 picks up almost immediately after the first film's conclusion. Jannicke (Ingrid Bolso Berdal), the sole survivor of the Nordic killer's snowbound onslaught, is...

It’s nice to see that even foreign filmgoers have to contend with sequel-itis. 2006’s ‘Cold Prey’ (’Fritt Vilt’) was a fairly standard slasher movie structure-wise. A group of snowboarders must take refuge in an abandoned hotel. Killer resident of said hotel takes them out one-by-one. But there was a style and a level of depth to ‘Cold Prey,’ something that is missing for the majority of its sequel. ’Cold Prey II,’ much like its predecessor, is a fairly standard slasher movie, too. Its setting has changed, there is a little more backstory to the killer involved, the body count is higher, and the characters being picked off are paper thin. You know, your basic rules of a slasher movie sequel.
Taking a page from ‘Halloween II,’ ‘Cold Prey II’ starts up right where the last film has left off. Jannicke, once again played by the tough Ingrid Bolso Berdal,...
