When I meet director Julia Ostertag backstage at L’Etrange Festival she’s clutching a book by Alejandro Jodorowsky who’s due to appear on stage later in the day. Like her hero, Julia’s a student of The Tarot, and the divinatory cards are just one of the occult aspects that appear in her film, Dark Circus. The film follows a young woman as she escapes her drab life, entering into a world of shadowy figures, symbolism and a whole load of Bdsm. I talked to the director about the meaning behind her film. So what is the world that you set this in? Is it Bdsm? I’m not so familiar could tell me a little about it? I had this vision of inventing a world that is...

The 6th annual Minneapolis Underground Film Festival makes its move into October this year where it will be screening on Oct. 3-6 at the St. Anthony Main Theater. The fest, while screening new films from all over, does a fantastic job of screening movies by local Minnesota filmmakers.
Some of these locally produced films include Mark Nielson’s spooky road trip flick Land of Sky Blue Water; Adam Jacobs’ suspense comedy Weekend Hat, which was also produced entirely by high school students; Dave Ash’s sci-fi drama Connected, which is co-directed by Paul von Stoetzel, whose short film Twisted Sister screens before the feature; Donny West’s autobiographical documentary Dazzle (The Donny West Story); and Phil Holbrook’s drama Tilt. There are also loads of short film programs featuring work by local filmmakers.

Christmas came a little bit early for eight filmmakers this month when the 4th annual Minneapolis Underground Film Festival handed out its annual awards. The fest was held earlier this month on Dec. 2-4.
The big winner this year was Steven Strauss’ Bronze, which took home the Best Feature Award. The controversial film tackles the issue of female “consent” through the story of three teenage girls who leave the comfortable confines of their suburban New Jersey home for a wild night of wicked fun — but end up getting into way more trouble than they wanted.
Another major winner at the fest was Usama Alshaibi’s Profane, which won the Best Experimental Award. Profane was also named this month as Bad Lit: The Journal of Underground Film’s Movie of the Year for 2011. The film, which combines experimental and traditional narrative filmmaking techniques, focuses on an emotionally lost female Muslim sex...

For their 4th annual edition, the Minneapolis Underground Film Festival is pulling out all the stops, spotlighting great local and international filmmaking talent over the course of three days, Dec. 2-4, on two screens at the Minneapolis College of Art & Design (McAd).
The fest opens with an ambitious Minneapolis-based move: Tyler Jensen’s 30 Films 30 Days. Working with hundreds of local participants, Jensen and his team completed a short film a day over the course of one month and this feature compiles all of them into one package. Plus, also screening on the same night is the groovy grindhouse horror flick The Disco Exorcist by Richard Griffin.
Over the course of the next two full days and nights, two of the best highlights of this year’s Muff include Usama Alshaibi‘s masterful mix of sex and religion Profane, Stuart Simpson‘s retro-sleazetastic monster flick El Monstro Del Mar!, neither of which are to be missed!

This week’s Absolute Must Read is a letter Hollis Frampton wrote to MoMA regarding a planned retrospective of his work in 1973. The hitch: The museum wanted Frampton to give them his films for free. Too bad he’s not still alive because we need more letters like this written, especially in today’s “free” internet culture. My favorite line: “I leave it to your surmise whether [Maya Deren's] life might have been prolonged by a few bucks.”In case you missed it on Bad Lit, Jonas Mekas reprinted the very informative and insightful comment he left here on his own website. Good stuff on the demise of his Movie Journal column. If you can name the three dudes and know where they’re sitting in this photograph, then you are a 100% underground film nerd. (And, yes, I canChris Hansen continues his production diary for his film An Affair. Day Three found...

Noise and Resistance is a new documentary by Julia Ostertag and Francesca Araiza Andrade that examines the world of European punk rock and how that subculture is helping and hoping to transform their way of life.
Traveling all across the European union, the filmmakers met and interviewed “quatters in Barcelona, anti-fascists in Moscow, Dutch trade unionists, the activists of England’s Crass collective, queer trailer park inhabitants in Berlin, [and] Swedish girl punk bands.” The film also includes, of course, lots of loud music.
