“L.A. has come of age — I’ve heard that so many times in the past decade. It has always sounded provincial and defensive,” says Dean Valentine, co-founder of the Felix Art Fair. “We’re one of the four or five global capitals of contemporary art. We always had the artists. But now we have the museums, the galleries, the collectors and, obviously, the art fairs.”
And art fair season in L.A. is back with a bang. This year, the gold standard, the Frieze Los Angeles art fair, is at the Santa Monica Airport for the second straight year. Frieze kicks off with an invitation-only preview Thursday, Feb. 29 and is open to the general public March 1-3.
Steered by Frieze director of the Americas Christine Messineo, the fair will feature booths from more than 95 galleries from around the world. Highlights include new paintings by Sam McKinniss, known for his...

Here’s your daily dose of an indie film, web series, TV pilot, what-have-you in progress — at the end of the week, you’ll have the chance to vote for your favorite.
In the meantime: Is this a project you’d want to see? Tell us in the comments.
Pinocchio’s Candy Lust
Logline: A 20-minute short about a female carpenter named Gepetto’s self-transformation into a reckless artist (Pinocchio) and her shifting relationship to the world of men. “Pinocchio’s Candy Lust” is a treatise on gender in relation to artistic identity.
Elevator Pitch:
Raising questions about multiple selves and the commodification of “artist” and “woman,” Gepetto, a disgruntled female carpenter, is confronted with the choice between acting responsibly and hating her life or (re)producing herself as Pinocchio. Carving a paintbrush and painting her body with woodgrain she undergoes a transformation so wild she destroys her whole village.

Historically, sequels have been reserved solely for Hollywood franchise films, so did I ever expect to be reviewing a sequel to Kentucker Audley's Open Five? Not in a million years! But judging from the narrative structure, it appears that Audley always planned for a sequel. If we believe the timeline of narrative (and I do not mean to infer that Audley is deceiving us), Open Five 2 begins while Kentucker (Kentucker Audley) -- a presumably fictionalized version of the director -- is editing Open Five. Kentucker resides in Lexington, while his girlfriend Caroline (Caroline White) lives in Memphis. Their relationship seems strained not only by the distance between them, but also by an admission made by Caroline during a Skype conversation (a scene that plays as a subtle homage to Joe Swanberg). It is not long before Kentucker is on the road to New Orleans by way of Memphis...
