“No one, and I mean no one wanted to make this movie.”
James Mangold delivered one of this year’s best films with Logan, and among its many acclaimed aspects is its vibe and feel of a modern-day western. It’s something he’s done before with Cop Land, but Mangold also made a point of directing an actual western as well.

Sound on Sight undertook a massive project, compiling ranked lists of the most influential, unforgettable, and exciting action scenes in all of cinema. There were hundreds of nominees spread across ten different categories and a multi-week voting process from 11 of our writers. The results: 100 essential set pieces, sequences, and scenes from blockbusters to cult classics to arthouse obscurities.
Shootouts, unlike any other type of action scenes, put death in the forefront of the audience’s mind. Whereas a car chase draws the attention onto the race, or a fight scene onto the pursuit of victory, shootouts test the mortality of our protagonists and anti-heroes. The fallout continues during Jude Law's phone-hacking trial against several News of the World editors. On Tuesday, Jan 28, the London courtroom heard testimony from a former reporter at the now-defunct publication. Dan Evans, who used to work under Andy Coulson, explained that he played a voicemail from Sienna Miller to Daniel Craig in 2005. Evans, who admitted to phone hacking, said that ten coworkers (including Coulson) knew how he was obtaining information about the stars. The prosecution asked Evans to describe the content of the voicemail and how Coulson reacted to hearing it. According to Evans, the message from Law's then-girlfriend said: "Hi it's me. I...

She loved him. It turns out Sienna Miller, who allegedly cheated on former fiance Jude Law with Daniel Craig back in 2005, wasn't just physically attracted to the future James Bond. With prominent former editors of Rupert Murdoch's now-defunct tabloid News of the World currently on trial for phone hacking, the alleged love triangle involving three big-name British celebrities got even more intense after a voicemail recording was played in a London court Tuesday, Jan. 28 in London. According to the Associated Press, tabloid reporter Dan Evans, who's [...]...

Tom Hiddleston's Coriolanus is blazing but bleak, and there's as little love in a 60s sex scandal as there was in Dickens's London
The first time I saw Tom Hiddleston act was at the Donmar six years ago. He was 26, a doleful Cassio to Chiwetel Ejiofor's Othello, and he made a small part look essential. Now he takes centre stage as a blazing Coriolanus. Blazing but bleak. He is the ideal combination of emotional reserve and physical bravura.
Reserve has always been one of the problems of this difficult play. Where do spectators put their trust? The play's martial hero treats the audience as he does the populace – don't say plebs – he despises. He will not show his wounds to the public in order to get their vote. He will not let spectators into his thoughts with a soliloquy.

X Factor judge Louis Walsh has an imaginative way with words, and certainly loves to offer a compliment. Even better when he can make an unusual comparison at the same time - a trait which Louis displayed with enthusiasm during last weekend's 'Love and Heartache'-themed live shows.
Digital Spy has chosen 8 of the music manager's weirdest compliments, both from last weekend and the X Factor archives - because although it's often followed by a billowing tumbleweed in the background, Louis's criticism never ceases to entertain and make us chuckle.
1. Nicholas McDonald has got a friend in Louis
"You're my little baby Bublé!" Walsh exclaimed to his X Factor finalist Nicholas McDonald just last Saturday (October 19). This conjured an image creepier than when Nicole Scherzinger sexily sauntered into the rehearsal room when Nicholas was practicing alone during his pre-performance Vt, or when the former Pussycat Dolls star spoke of "balls creeping...

Actor cancels UK theatre tour of A Passionate Woman in order to receive treatment
Actor Lynda Bellingham has been diagnosed with cancer, and will cancel a nationwide theatre tour to fight the disease.
The 65-year-old actor did not reveal the nature of her disease, but has pulled out of a planned revival of Kay Mellor's comedy A Passionate Woman this autumn.
The production had been due to open at the Sheffield Lyceum theatre in September, before commencing a national tour. However, while doctors advised Bellingham against taking part for the time being, co-producers Sheffield theatres, David Pugh & Dafydd Rogers hope to present it next year.
"I'm devastated not to be able to honour my commitments to the play this year," said Bellingham, "but having toured many times before, I'm aware of the sheer stamina needed, and I need to prioritise my recovery. That said, nothing's going to stop me coming back next year,...

Unrequited love is the stuff of great art, as evidenced in this portrait of the Lamorna group, named after a spot on the Cornish coast that inspired them. Dominic Cooper is the leader of this Edwardian pack and a proper enfant terrible as Aj Munnings, a painter on his way up in the world as the Great War looms. The film itself is no masterwork, but it has a certain irresistible undertow.
Emily Browning anchors the story as Florence, a newcomer to this bohemian enclave who dreams of being an artist, but lacks the spirit of abandon that appears to be a prerequisite. Munnings, on the other hand, is full of it. He veers close to pomposity as he strides about the local pub reciting poetry, but it's enough to turn...

With British theatre looking backwards, even the one new play that almost everyone enjoyed was a skilful reworking of an 18th-century classic
The British theatre is living off its past. Just think of the plays that left a strong impression in 2011: Caryl Churchill's Top Girls (1982), Harold Pinter's Betrayal (1978), Edward Bond's Saved (1965), Arnold Wesker's The Kitchen (1959) and his Chicken Soup With Barley (1958), and Terence Rattigan's Flare Path (1942). Even the one new play that almost everyone enjoyed, Richard Bean's One Man, Two Guvnors, was a skilful reworking of an 18th-century classic.
I admired Mike Bartlett's 13 at the National and Alan Ayckbourn's Neighbourhood Watch in Scarborough for their ability, in very different ways, to reflect the tenor of the times. Two other old hands, David Hare with South Downs and David Edgar with Written on the Heart, turned in highly accomplished pieces. But, even...

This will be happening every week on Thursday and has the catchy title, Film To Go (we don’t want to hear people calling it Orange Thursdays!). Each week at 8pm, there will be a live webcast which they call Film Night Live. We’ve teamed up with Orange to bring you the broadcast on the HeyUGuys Facebook page here.
This week, the free download is 3:10 to Yuma which stars Russell Crowe, Christian Bale, Peter Fonda, Gretchen Mol, Ben Foster...

Crucible, Sheffield; Cottesloe; Olivier, both London
For fans of the television series The Wire, it is impossible not to be on patrol, trying to spot detective Jimmy McNulty in Dominic West's Iago and Lester Freamon in Clarke Peters's Othello. But it is to the credit of both actors and to Daniel Evans's triumphant production at the Sheffield Crucible that such distractions do not persist as the tragedy gathers pace. Besides, Dominic West is in complete Shakespearean disguise as Iago. He has grown a beard, cut his hair savagely short, wears curious brown leather knickerbockers with slits in them and has acquired a Yorkshire accent to play the greatest villain of all time. The choice of accent is inspired because it sounds so trustworthy – it turns Iago into Mr Common Sense. Noisy comedy is this Iago's cover. You can imagine him propping up the bar at a 16th-century tavern,...

We could hear some important revelations next week in the News Of The World scandal: Private investigator Glenn Mulcaire is expected to disclose by Friday who at the defunct tabloid asked him to hack the phones of six people including model Elle MacPherson, PR agent Max Clifford, and former Professional Footballers Association chief Gordon Taylor. The Telegraph reports that on August 1st Mulcaire lost his appeal of a court order to name names in the six cases -- although he's still fighting a different order to reveal who asked him to hack the phone of comedian Steve Coogan. The disclosure comes a day after Mulcaire sued News Corp for breach of contract: Last month the company stopped paying the legal bills for the Pi who was convicted in 2007 of phone hacking. Meanwhile, Scotland Yard today made its 14th hacking-related arrest: former Notw reporter Dan Evans. The paper suspended him last...

Lawyers for interior designer Kelly Hoppen claim material 'drives coach and horses' through News International's defence
The Metropolitan police have been accused of misleading behaviour in the phone-hacking scandal after handing over evidence they had twice claimed did not exist.
The latest embarrassment for Scotland Yard was disclosed in the high court in the case of Sienna Miller's stepmother, Kelly Hoppen, who claims that a News of the World journalist, Dan Evans, attempted to hack into her voicemail. The court heard she was a tabloid target because of her friendships with the former England footballer Sol Campbell and with Madonna's former husband, film director Guy Ritchie.
The case also threatens to embarrass the NoW because the alleged hacking occurred in June 2009 – three years after the arrest of its then royal correspondent, Clive Goodman, who was jailed with the paper's private investigator, Glenn Mulcaire, on the basis that he...

There have been reports of one ticket changing hands for £900. Ian (Jerusalem) Rickson's production of The Children's Hour will be worth that for fans of Keira Knightley and Mad Men's Elisabeth Moss: they'll be in the same arena as two stars who prove they can act off-screen. It isn't worth that as a theatrical experience: neither actor is transcendent; the production – startlingly, as Rickson is habitually both delicate and acute – is listless.
Knightley, last seen on the West End stage playing a Hollywood actress in The Misanthrope, delivers her part – of a bobbed and tweeded 1930s schoolmistress falsely accused of having a lesbian affair – with a fine-boned bleakness. She is restrained and contained, at times to the point of vacancy, making some of her effects by tilting herself in the direction of the audience as if they were her camera.

Live television is tough, you know? There will be times when one finds oneself having to contend with ignoring an itch or stifling a sneeze or trying, hard, to suppress a burp or, you know. Deal with inhaling small, winged creatures. Fox 13 anchor Dan Evans tried, valiantly, to keep his composure after swatting a fly from his face during his broadcast, but ended up inhaling the insect whole.

Biggest Loser eliminee Dan Evans has said that he wants to prove that he can be a success after leaving the show. The police captain from Oklahoma was sent home from the NBC competition this week after falling below the yellow line alongside twin brother Don when the scale revealed that they had both gained 9lbs. He has now lost more than 70lbs from his starting weight of 287lbs and told Digital Spy that he would love to secure the at-home prize, although admitted that it could be difficult as he started the competition as the lightest male. "For me to achieve the percentage, which is around 50% body weight, it might put me under my optimum weight by 20lbs," he explained. "My goal weight is somewhere around 160lbs, 165lbs." He also insisted that (more)...

Spokesperson for British reality show admits that contestants' vocals were enhanced.
By Gil Kaufman

There were plenty of times during the lackluster recent season of "American Idol" when fans probably wished producers would allow the weaker finalists to Auto-Tune their shaky vocals.
Maybe they should be watching England's "X Factor" instead. A major scandal is brewing over revelations that the show enhanced the vocals of some contestants during Saturday's season premiere, with some of the very obviously tweaked vocals so clumsily edited they could have been included on a T-Pain single.
According to BBC News, a spokesperson for the show — created and produced by former "Idol" judge Simon Cowell (who is bringing it to the U.S. in 2011) — admitted that post-production work was done on some of the singers' vocals because of interference caused by the number of microphones used during filming.

Former X Factor stars Daniel Evans and Ethan Boroian have criticised the show for using Auto-Tune. Evans, who reached the live finals in 2008, said that the alterations to vocals during the production process on the show made it a "sad day for music". "I am big campaigner against Auto-Tune in the music industry, it's all over the charts but to hear it on a so-called live show is just plain sad," he said on Twitter. "It's like an epidemic, and I won't be watching again. Sad times for real music fans." He continued: "I can tell you what the problem is, it's the live auditions on the large stage. Even the best singers make mistakes, but in a live arena where the sound reverberates and bounces around, the judges don't hear the clean live feed, so when recording the show, they probably sound Ok, but when the producers (more)...

Daniel Fox has returned for a second shot at the X Factor crown.
The opera singer auditioned last year and reached the judges houses stage of the competition, before Cheryl Cole collapsed in tears and sent him home.
Fans have revealed on Twitter that Dan, who claimed to be auditioning for Britain’s Got Talent last year but was never seen on the TV show, attended last weekend’s Manchester auditions and sang the Oasis song ‘Stop Crying Your Heart Out’ for Simon Cowell, Louis Walsh and Nicole Scherzinger.
He was reportedly sent through to bootcamp but not before Cowell criticised him for being a little too desperate.

Craig here with the second Take Three, where I look at a different character/supporting actor's work through three of their most notable films.
This week: Ben Foster
Take One: Stranger in a strange town
In watching the three films for this post there was something about seeing Ben Foster on screen that, at first, I couldn't put my finger on. It struck me particularly during 30 Days of Night that he kept reminding me of another, older actor. If you were take a look at a Ben Foster performance (in any of the three films mentioned here, and others besides) then watch Brad Dourif in any one of his countless roles, similarities in mannerism, appearance and acting style become apparent; at a push you might mistake them for being related. Dourif is one of the quintessential character actors (and a likely future candidate for this series) and if there's a...

Some kids find a magical creature — perhaps Frankenstein’s Monster or an extra-terrestrial — who sends them on a wild and magical adventure where they learn life lessons. Other kids find Lee Marvin, and embark on a wild and wacky adventure where they become bank robbers. Only one of these youthful scenarios has a happy ending. But what do you expect when you find Marvin copiously bleeding outside of your barn?
The Spikes Gang initially sells itself as a lighthearted, Cat Ballou type of Western. Will (Gary Grimes), Les (Ron Howard), and Tod (Charles Martin Smith) decide to be kindly and patch Harry Spikes (Marvin) up. They do the typical teen thing, and hide him away from their parents, bringing him clothes, food, and money.
He generously turns down the money, revealing that he’s a well-padded bank robber, and sells the boys tales of silk shirts, women, Cuban cigars, and expensive bourbon.
