Just as most young actors who headed to New York post World War II, Eva Marie Saint was a staple on live television. In fact, her first TV appearance was in 1947 in a production of “A Christmas Carol” starring John Carradine as Scrooge. Saint, who celebrates her 100th birthday on July 4, told me in a 2013 L.A. Times interview that she didn’t appear on screen in her first TV gig that same year on NBC’s “The Borden Show.” She was hired to simply supply applause off-camera and called her parents to tell them the good news. “After the show, they called me and mom said, ‘Honey, we just love the show, and Dad thinks he heard you applauding.”’
Doing live TV got the lithe blonde actress a lot of exposure. One time it was way too much exposure. Between 1950-52, Saint appeared as the daughter of a high-powered San...

Longtime Bold and the Beautiful star John McCook took to Instagram on Wednesday, November 15, to share a heartfelt video message about his son, Jake, who has been living with schizophrenia. “I want to tell you about a book my wife and my son have written. My son Jake has schizophrenia. He and my wife, Laurette wanted to write a book to help people understand what it’s like in a family to help each other and to be understanding,” McCook said in the video. The book, titled The Cliffs of Schizophrenia, is co-written by Jake and Laurette, with both writing short, alternating chapters, and is said to be “a story of resilience and enduring hope for a better life.” “While creating it, Jake’s worst paranoid thoughts were triggered,” reads the logline for the book. “He overcame this by writing some chapters in free-form style, allowing you to experience what...

Hollywood’s postwar shift to social consciousness addressed familiar issues like bigotry and discrimination. On his way to making his gargantuan, serious epics, famed director George Stevens paused for this almost entirely forgotten contemplation of American anxiety in the business rat race, with a side order of alcoholism and potential adultery. Ray Milland is the troubled ad man who tries to help the drink-impaired actress, Joan Fontaine. Wife Teresa Wright waits patiently back home, but for how long? Is Stevens just dabbling in neorealistic doldrums, or did he feel the wave of dull existential despair as well? It’s one of his least-known films.
