When a jury determined “Blurred Lines” borrowed from Marvin Gaye’s “Got to Give It Up” and Pharrell Williams and Robin Thicke were ordered to pay millions of dollars in damages, it not only shook up the music industry but also set off a flurry of other lawsuits that made songwriters more willing to give credit, whether it was due or not.
After the 2015 decision, John Legend argued that the verdict would set a bad precedent for artists creating music inspired by others. It certainly set a precedent for legal action as other veteran songwriters decided to go after hitmakers they felt were a little too inspired by their work. Some went to trial, others settled outside the courtroom and a number of artists began extending writing credit to older songs — some because the melodies were similar but others to avoid a repeat of the “Blurred Lines” backlash.

When we meet, Atlanta-based rapper J.I.D is only a few weeks away from releasing his long-anticipated third studio album, The Forever Story. He tells me at least three times over the course of our conversation about his frustrations around releasing the project. “A lot of noise got in this time,” he says, sitting at a coffee shop in south Atlanta. It’s been a daunting change for someone who enjoys making music in near solitude. “I tried to bring a community vibe and just see what came out of it,...

Earlier this year, singer-songwriter-producer Kenneth “Babyface” Edmonds — known for writing massive hits for Toni Braxton, TLC, and Boyz II Men — received a call from P. Diddy.
Diddy’s job was to convince Edmonds to face off against Teddy Riley on an Instagram-based rap battle. And he didn’t mince words. “He said, ‘Face, fuck that shy shit,'” Edmonds recalls. “‘Go do this.'”
Edmonds agreed. Though he was reluctant before Diddy’s blunt persuasion, his back-and-forth with Riley in the Instagram battle — a musical competition, called Verzuz, in which writers,...

Mariah Carey lives a glamorous life. As her classic episode of "Cribs" proved, her life is full of high fashion, elevators, designer furniture and bubble baths for her pets. Her latest acquisition is another chapter in the fabulous life of Mrs. Nick Cannon. In a video posted by producer Jermaine Dupri (who is in the studio working with Carey), he reveals her latest toy: An iPad that is blinged-out, bedazzled and that features the letter "M" along with her signature butterfly symbol. As Carey explains in the video, she received it as a gift from Elizabeth Arden, the cosmetics company that distributes Carey's line of fragrances (with more coming this holiday season, she reminds the viewing public).
Even Dupri — a guy who once rapped "Money ain't a thing" on one of his biggest hits — found the piece a little bit gaudy. "I just wanted to make a little 'living the life' moment here,...

Producer, songwriter and longtime Ursh collaborator Bryan Michael Cox says if you're sleeping on his man, wake up. The upcoming Raymond vs. Raymond is going to be the album to talk about.
"I think Usher is in a place where he really wants to express what's going on in his life, as any artist would," Cox told MTV News, referring to Usher's divorce from Tameka Foster-Raymond. "All the greats did it. Marvin Gaye did Here, My Dear. All the greats express where they are personally. [Usher's] last album was that too. Canadian rapper Drake's "Best I Ever Had" single is not only a smash for him, but it's becoming one of the best remixed tracks of the summer. The latest entry comes from self-professed "King of Remixes" Trey Songz, who dropped his track via his Twitter account.
"In the studio tryna paint a musical Picasso," he wrote of the track.
It's not the first time Drake and Trey Songz have collaborated on a song — they previously released "Successful" and "Replacement Girl" together. In the remix of "Best I Ever Had," he tweaks the lyrics slightly, so instead of "Baby you my everything/ You're all I ever wanted," it's now "She said I'm her everything/ I'm all she ever wanted." The track retains the same charm and smoothness as the original with an extra dash of theatricality and swagger care of Songz.

A music video to promote Lionel Richie's single "Just Go" has just made its debut, guest-starring Akon. The video follows a man when he invites his girlfriend for a vacation in the Bahamas. Kissing each other in the swimming pool and having a romantic dinner together are some of what they do during the holiday.
"Just Go" is a ballad track coming from Lionel's upcoming studio album of the same name. Featuring Akon, it is written by Johnta Austin and The-Dream, and is expected to come out as the second single off the effort.
Commenting on him joining forces with Akon, Lionel says they "could have recorded a whole side of the album." He adds, "I am used to being the control guy - the writer, producer, arranger and singer. But Akon understands melody, he's a storyteller. We wrote this song in two and a half hours. It was a love fest.

Joining a range of Hollywood celebrities who address the battery case involving Chris Brown and Rihanna, Usher blames Chris for being photographed jet skiing in Miami last week while he is still placed under Lapd's investigation for allegedly beating Rihanna during their heated argument on February 8. Criticizing the 19-year-old performer, Usher takes to Jermaine Dupri's "Living the Life" series to express his thought.
"I'm a little disappointed in this photo," Usher says in a video for the series. "After the other photo [of Rihanna's bruised face posted by TMZ]? C'mon, Chris. Have a little bit of remorse, man. The man's on jet skis? Like, just relaxing in Miami?"
Usher is seen in the video alongside Jermaine and fellow singer/songwriter Johnta Austin, both of whom do not offer a single comment on Chris and Rihanna's alleged altercation though. The threesome appears in the video mainly to talk about a recent photo of Christina Milian. Usher and Dupri,...

Following his exit from Def Jam Records which leads to report saying that he has let down the company for not dropping good music for their artists, Jermaine Dupri reaches out to Essence Magazine, clarifying that the truth behind the story is not the one swirling in the media. "Island [Def Jam Records] is going to say what makes them look good," so he tells the publication.
"They are not going to tell the truth and say, 'He just stopped dealing with us on a daily basis'," Jermaine explains. "If you don't put out my records, that's all I have as a person. I'm a record person, so if I give you a record and you don't put it out, then basically you're showing me that it's really no business."
"I never got a chance to put the records out. I had Johnta Austin, Ninth Ward and Dontria," Jermaine furthermore shares. "I read the blogs and I'm thinking,...

Record producer, songwriter, and rapper Jermaine Dupri has reportedly been fired from Island Def jam Music Group. A source, as quoted on Sohh.com, says, "I am being told that Jd's termination papers were being drafted this afternoon (August 20)."
The surprising rumor makes some claim that he is dropped because he has failed working on Janet Jackson's "Discipline", which does not share the success of her previous albums. Jermaine is also said to be responsible for Mariah Carey's "E=Mc²", which is reportedly having problems with a follow-up single after "Touch My Body". To make matter worse, some continue criticizing him with Johnta Austin's projects, "Ocean Drive" that has been permanently shelved, and rumored upcoming "Love, Sex, and Religian" that hasn't been confirmed for release.
