In the realm of popular music, statistics can reveal the truth behind the glitz and glamour. USC Annenberg’s Inclusion in the Recording Studio study, provides an insightful examination into the lack of women present in the music industry across various sections including engineering, songwriting, producers, spanning from 2012 to 2019. Across 800 popular songs, the study shines a spotlight on an industry that has been predominantly white and male.

Throughout his decades-long career, writer, actor, comedian, and director Mike Myers has been part of not one, not two, but three mammoth movie hits. Google his name, and you'll find stories alternating between the mullet hero of "Wayne's World," a psychedelic spy, or a grumpy green ogre -- such is the versatility of this Canadian-born comedy machine.
As if his franchise chops weren't impressive enough, he's also responsible for creating two out of these three blockbuster movie tentpoles. Myers' talent places a focus on character creation and sculpting unique worlds. Audiences have been quick to jump onto whatever bandwagon Myers dreams up. He's one of the most successful and well-known comedians working today.
Funnybones aside, he's also someone who isn't afraid to shake things up and appear where you'd least expect. He recently collaborated on David O. Russell's "Amsterdam," continuing a supporting role trend that saw him appear in...

When one thinks of Idaho, potatoes — not pregnancy — immediately comes to mind. Made in Boise, however, the latest from award-winning filmmaker Beth Aala, will forever change how one views this rugged northwestern locale. Following four gestational surrogates, all devoted mothers with children of their own, who carry babies for women and men (often gay singles and couples) both nationwide and around the world, the doc is an eye-opening look at how this red state-based “unofficial surrogacy capital” of the Us is redefining family in surprisingly progressive ways. Independent Lens is approaching its 18th season offering documentary films to a wide viewing audience. Its upcoming collection, set to begin airing this fall on PBS.
Series executive producer Lois Vossen spoke with IndieWire about the ongoing relevance of these stories, whether they’re primarily focused on illuminating a part of the past or putting current events in a greater historical context.
“One of the things that I’m a firm believer in is that we can’t understand where we are right now without looking back at the past and how we got here,” Vossen said. “History is such an important part of who we are today. I personally am fascinated by filmmakers who can take something from history and show us why it’s incredibly relevant today.”

A Montana rancher, a Kansas farmer and a Louisiana commercial fishermen might not necessarily fit our stereotype of environmental activist, but as the new documentary “Rancher, Farmer, Fisherman” shows the drastic changes to the earth’s environment are directly affecting the professions these men love. In this epic documentary, based on best-selling author Miriam Horn’s book, co-directors Susan Froemke, John Hoffman and Beth Aala had to rely on three different cinematographers to capture the three men’s stories and the stunning landscapes they call their office.
Cinematographer Bob Richman’s work was largely focused on the capturing the footage shot of ranching in Montana, while DPs Buddy Squires and Thorsten Thielow were tasked with shooting in Kansas and Louisiana.
IndieWire recently caught up with Richman to learn about how he approached capturing the majesty of “Big Sky” country and the life of a rancher.

Magnificent aerial shots of breathtaking landscapes from the mighty Mississippi River to the Great Plains and the Rocky Mountains open Rancher, Farmer, Fisherman, an enlightening film for Discovery Channel based on Miriam Horn's bestselling book of the same name. Opening text reminds us that those lands and waterways forged the American character, but the traditional livelihoods that defined them are under threat. Filmmakers Susan Froemke, John Hoffman and Beth Aala focus on a handful of maverick but influential conservationists safeguarding their commercial futures while protecting the country's natural resources.

★★★★☆In his 2002 documentary The Kid Stays in the Picture, Robert Evans proclaimed there are three sides to every story: "My side, your side and the truth. And no one is lying. Memories shared serve each differently." In Mike Myers' directorial debut (which he co-directs with Beth Aala), Supermensch: The Legend of Shep Gordon (2013), the titular Hollywood man about town gets his day in the limelight. Standing over six feet in his stocking feet and looking and sounding not dissimilar to Larry David, Shep Gordon is an entertainment legend. A colossus within the fields of talent management, film producing and cooking he has excelled in a field where being the nice guy normally means finishing last.

Essentially, at its core, cinema is just storytelling. Which is exactly the reason why Mike Myers’ directorial debut – alongside Beth Aala, in what is her sophomore endeavour – is such a treat. As Supermensch: The Legend of Shep Gordon explores the life of a man who has dined, wined and revelled in the company of some of the most important cultural figures of the 20th century, and believe me, this man has some stories to tell.
Shep Gordon is one of the most famous people you’ve never heard of, and a contact list full of people you have. From a young age he was mixing with the likes of Jimi Hendrix and John Lennon, while managing eccentric rockstar Alice Cooper, partly responsible for creating that unique brand that saw the musician go on to achieve great success. From there he went on to manage the likes of Luther Vandross to Groucho Marx,...

Unless you're a Hollywood A-lister you probably haven't heard of Shep Gordon, a talent manager who also has a gift for telling an anecdote or two. Mike Myers is behind the camera, letting him have the limelight in a documentary portrait that is full of good humour although, like Gordon's rambling yarns of showbiz yesteryear, it lacks a clear direction.
Michael Douglas, Sylvester Stallone and Alice Cooper are among the guest speakers who line up to sing Gordon's praises when the man himself is too humble to do so. Apparently, he's that kinda guy, a total "mensch" (Yiddish for a great bloke) who defies the usual shark-swimming stereotype of a Hollywood agent. Cooper sees him as his other half and indeed, the first (and strongest) part of the film works...

Chicago – Not much is really revealed about the subject of the documentary “Supermensch: The Legend of Shep Gordon,” co-directed by comedian Mike Myers. Shep is a rock star agent, Shep gets rich, Shep shares his Hawaiian beach condo with big stars, Shep represents gourmet chefs, Shep likes to cook and Shep strangely wants kids, despite being in his sixties and not being able to maintain any domestic relationship. There is no there in this film, only the spoils of good representation.
Rating: 2.5/5.0
There are definitely more questions than answers by the end of this film, regarding what is revealed about Shep Gordon – and more importantly, what isn’t revealed. He seems a nice enough guy on the surface, but a “super-mensch”? You really have to back up such a title with some real humanity, not getting multi-million contracts and having a nice beach condo. There is no doubt that Shep Gordon...

There are few people on earth with more famous friends than longtime Hollywood manager Shep Gordon. Although, few people on earth even know who Shep is. For those unfamiliar with the name, he was the iconoclastic manager to some of the bigger stars in show business, from Alice Cooper to Emeril Lagasse. Those two men owe much of their celebrity status to this brilliant manager; fortunately, true to his admiration of karma, Shep is now getting a favour in return and is the star of his own documentary.
Supermensch: The Legend of Shep Gordon is not just a supremely entertaining glimpse at the high life of Hollywood, but also a sympathetic look at a man who achieved much in his life, partied with the most illustrious friends at the most lavish parties, but had a gaping hole inside. Shep’s journey is a Hollywood story as classic as the stars he served,...
