Oprah Winfrey, who owns a house in Hawaii, was in Maui on Thursday to personally deliver needed supplies to evacuees of the island’s devastating wildfires. The flames have claimed 67 lives so far, with many more still missing, Wbal-tv reported Friday.
“It’s a little overwhelming,” a visibly distraught Winfrey told the BBC at Maui’s War Memorial Stadium, where a shelter has been set up for the many people displaced by the fires.
“But I’m really so pleased to have so many people supporting, and people are just bringing what they can and doing what they can,” Winfrey added.

She explained that she’d checked the shelter earlier to see which items people needed the most.
“Often you make donations of clothes or whatever, and it’s not really what people need,” she said as she distributed pillows.

In a wrenching post to his Instagram account on Thursday, Hawaii native Jason Momoa expressed sadness and shock over the fires ravaging the island of Maui.
“We are devastated and heartbroken for our friends and ‘ohana on Maui who [sic] been impacted by the recent wildfires,” Momoa wrote.
The “Aquaman” star also shared video via the nonprofit group ‘Āina Momona showing just how bad things are on the island as the fire continues.

“Top Chef” alum Lee Ann Wong has lived in Hawaii since 2013, where she runs her popular Honolulu restaurant Koko Head Cafe and also serves as executive chef for Hawaiian Airlines. And on Thursday she called into NewsNation to give some on-the-ground perspective on the horrifying fires that are ripping through the island of Maui.
The fires were caused by several factors: climate change, which has led to increasingly dry summers in Hawaii that increase fire risk; the proliferation of non-native fauna; and an unfortunate combination of powerful winds from a nearby hurricane and what scientists call a “flash drought” — a rapid-onset drought similar to a flash flood.
The fires have devastated the island of Maui and all but destroyed the town of Lahaina. There are also wildfires on the islands of Hawaii and Oahu that were quickly contained. 53 people have been confirmed killed by the Maui fire, and more deaths are likely.

Last week on “Top Chef,” the four remaining All-Stars – Stephanie Cmar, Kevin Gillespie, Melissa King and Bryan Voltaggio – had to prepare two courses that showcased the city of Parma’s edible specialties, Parmigiano-Reggiano cheese and Prosciutto di Parma ham. Bryan got a harsh critique from one chef, who groused that his dishes lacked soul, but in the end Kevin was eliminated for his poorly cooked pork and overly salty brodo. That left three chefs going into the show’s supersized finale, so who took the $250,000 prize and the title of Top Chef? Read on for our minute-by-minute takes on the 14th and last episode of Season 17, “Finito!”

I’ll admit, after the first half of “Top Chef: All-Stars L.A.,” if you had told me that Stephanie Cmar would make the final three, I might not have believed you. She struggled early on in the season, and there were a few weeks when it seemed like she was hanging on by a thread. But you can never say never on this show. Cmar eventually found her groove and even exceeded her own expectations. Now that she’s among the final three, she’s so close to the title she can taste it.
Things started off well enough for Cmar. She was on the winning team in the very first elimination challenge along with Gregory Gourdet and Jamie Lynch, both of whom she has outlasted. But over the next six weeks she was at the bottom four times, so things weren’t looking too good for her future on the show.

Let’s dish! Which ‘Top Chef’ Season 17 elimination challenge most tickled your TV taste buds? [Poll]
What’s cooking? The Season 17 finale of “Top Chef,” that’s what. The finale arrives this Thursday, June 18, on Bravo as the three competing chefs left standing — Melissa King, Stephanie Cmar and Bryan Voltaggio — each prepare a four-course meal. They will be joined by eliminated chefs Lee Anne Wong, Brian Malarkey and Kevin Gillespie, who will each be paired with one of the three finalists as helpers as the season concludes in Italy –hence the episode title “Finito!”
But since these chefs were all All-Stars who participated on previous seasons but never won, the show seemed to demand more from this crop of 15 contestants. Many of the sometimes brutal elimination challenges that took place in Los Angeles were tied to notable landmarks, award-winning local chefs, scenic locales and popular eateries.

It’s a bit of a surprise that on next week’s penultimate episode of the 17th season of “Top Chef” Gregory Gourdet, who was just eliminated in “Lucca,” wasn’t recruited to be one of the so-called “reinforcements” to assist the final three All-Stars Melissa King, Stephanie Cmar and Bryan Voltaggio with their finale cooking challenge in Italy. Instead, Brian Malarkey — who was eliminated after the final challenge in Los Angeles — showed up as Stephanie’s helper in a preview for the June 18 finale, and Lee Anne Wong is lending Melissa a hand.
Now the truth can be told. When Gregory woke up in his hotel bed on the chefs’ first day in Tuscany, he revealed that the competition took a toll on his back. He observed that the show “takes a lot out of you, and I’m really hoping my back doesn’t bother me through these finals.

We can debate all we want about how this “Top Chef” All-Stars season with returning players has panned out, but enough about Brian Malarkey and his odd desire to buy extra ingredients he doesn’t use, Stephanie Cmar‘s lack of confidence, Lee Anne Wong‘s potty mouth and how Kevin Gillespie‘s stubborn need to make 12 dishes during Restaurant Wars, which was a disaster.

All three know their way around a kitchen and possess finely honed taste buds. But their approaches to their critiques and the way they comport themselves on the show are quite different.

With three more episodes, five remaining competitors and one more chef who will have to pack their knives and go this week, Season 17 of Bravo’s reality staple “Top Chef” has gotten a lot of bang out of its All-Star lineup of former finalists, front-runners and fan favorites assembled in Los Angeles. There have been revered culinary greats as judges such as Nancy Silverton, Jonathan Waxman, Ruth Reichl and Michael McCarty, visits to such local landmarks as the Getty Center, the Walt Disney Concert Hall and the L.A. Coliseum. And given the locale, such stars as Kelly Clarkson, Ali Wong, Danny Trejo and Jon Favreau stopped by as well.

Last week “Top Chef” went from six contestants to five … and then back to six. Karen Akunowicz was eliminated (for the second time) after “Colossal Coliseum Kaiseki.” Then she lost in “Last Chance Kitchen” to Kevin Gillespie, who earned his way back into the competition. But can Gillespie actually win after he was eliminated once already? Quite possibly. It has happened three times before.

Last week “Top Chef” went to summer camp where 200 hungry moms brunched and munched while Bryan Voltaggio won his first elimination challenge of the season. Alas, Lee Anne Wong was done in by not checking the setting of the oven, causing her clafoutis to be steamed instead of baked. After the show she faced Kevin Gillespie in “Last Chance Kitchen” and lost in a battle involving eggs cooked three ways. What happened this week when the six remaining All-Stars headed to a coliseum to make a traditional Japanese Kaiseki meal in honor of the Tokyo Olympics, which have now been delayed due to the coronavirus pandemic? “I’m here for my family, for our future. It’s not over yet. This is my last chance to get back in the game and get in the running for $250,000,” said Lee Anne Wong as she entered “Top Chef’s” “Last Chance Kitchen” after being eliminated in “Cabin Fever.” But to get back into the main competition, she had to get past Kevin Gillespie. Wong herself admitted, “Kevin is probably one of the fiercest competitors in this competition. This is not going to be easy.” Watch their head-to-head battle above.

On nearly every TV reality competition show, there is one contestant who is a bit of an annoyance and not exactly a team player. On the current All-Star season of “Top Chef” that includes finalists, fan favorites and front-runners from past seasons who never won, there is an air of professionalism and camaraderie shared among the players — save for one.
Season 3 fourth-place finisher Brian Malarkey. The San Diego resident has done well for himself, opening 15 restaurants across the country. He also is a celebrity chef, one who appears on “Today” and “Good Morning America” regularly and is in demand as a judge on a variety of Food Network shows.
However, since the Season 17 premiere of “Top Chef” when Brian pushed aside Joe Sasto — who was supposed to be the captain of their three-person team with Lee Anne Wong — and started calling the shots when it came to the menu for an elimination challenge,...

In last week’s episode of ‘Top Chef,’ season 4 finalist Lisa Fernandes’s undercooked Brussels sprouts caused her to hear these words for the first time from host Padma Lakshmi’s lips: “Please pack your knives and go.” Luckily, she redeemed herself after she topped Joe Sasto during “Last Chance Kitchen.” This week the Los Angeles edition of Bravo’s reality show has the 11 chefs left in the game cooking with the help of their loved ones. Read on for our minute-by-minute takes on the fifth episode of the season, “Bring Your Loved One to Work.”

Episode four of “Top Chef: All-Stars L.A.,” “You’re So Fresh,” ended in a bit of a tussle between Brian Malarkey and Lee Anne Wong over who was to blame for a lack of seasoning on Wong’s plate. Luckily for both of them the judges liked Lisa Fernandes‘s dish even less and eliminated her instead, but we think Malarkey may be on his way out next.
As of this writing Malarkey gets leading odds of 16/5 of being eliminated from the show in episode five. That’s based on the combined predictions of “Top Chef” fans we’ve polled every week for their forecasts here in our predictions center. He does have a history of being hit-and-miss on the cooking show. When he previously competed in season three he had more bottom dishes than top dishes before being eliminated in fourth place.

Did Brian Malarkey truly live up to his name last week on the All-Star season of “Top Chef”? First, for a vegetarian challenge he decided to streamline his usual overloaded creation by basically serving mozzarella and tomatoes with a vinaigrette. All I know is, if I can make a dish served on the show, it is no winner. Disappointed head judge Tom Colicchio thought the dish was too simple, adding that, “It’s ubiquitous. We’ve seen it.” Even though Brian’s offering was the red team’s first course, it was already clear he was in danger of being on the bottom three.
But his own dish might have been the least of his sins Brian later seemed to throw a teammate under the bus. Because it was a team challenge, many of the chefs helped their cohorts when it came to plating their six-course menu. That was the...

Three male cheftestants have been eliminated from “Top Chef: All-Stars L.A.” so far — Joe Sasto, Angelo Sosa and Jamie Lynch — but it looks like a woman will be on the chopping block in week four when the competitors have to make vegetarian dishes for the judges. That’s according to our racetrack odds, which are based on the combined forecasts of “Top Chef” fans who have placed their bets here in our predictions center.
As of this writing Lisa Fernandes gets leading odds of 37/10 of being eliminated. She previously competed on the show in season four, when she was a runner-up but landed at the bottom seven times in a row before the finale. She’s been doing alright in season 17, though, advancing safely through all three elimination challenges so far.

On last week’s Season 17 episode of “Top Chef,” Jamie Lynch was the All-Star eliminated for not having enough time to pour his jus over his seared chicken breast, leaving his plate inspired by baroque paintings rather tasteless. He had a chance to earn redemption in “Last Chance Kitchen,” but Joe Sasto bested him in another poultry challenge. This week, the Los Angeles edition of Bravo’s reality show has the 12 remaining chefs making dishes inspired by the animated film “Trolls World Tour” and participating in a vegetarian six-course meal Read on for our minute-by-minute takes on the fourth episode of the season, “You’re So Fresh” (all times Et/Pt).

Don’t you love it when reality show celebrities pop up on another TV talent contest? If so, you will want to see what happens when “American Idol” winner and coach for “The Voice” Kelly Clarkson puts in an appearance in the “Top Chef” kitchen and mingles with the 12 remaining All-Star contestants this season. She is currently promoting her animated film “Trolls World Tour,” which is going straight to video-on-demand on April 10 because of the coronavirus pandemic.
In the preview clip above, host Padma Lakshmi introduces Clarkson as a guest judge for the main challenge round. The chefs are delighted about the news. “I’m Kelly Clarkson, nice to meet you,” although clearly everyone already knows there is musical greatness in their midst. As a thrilled Karen Akunowicz says, “She’s amazing!” However, there is less enthusiasm in the room when Padma reveals that their menus for the challenge must be vegetarian.

Chef and restaurateur Brian Malarkey, who was a finalist on season 3 of “Top Chef,” apparently thrives on chaos, according to a preview clip of this week’s episode of the elimination challenge. The 14 remaining chefs madly rush into L.A.’s Union Station with just an hour before guests arrive. We witness season 12’s Melissa King taking care of some last-minute chopping chores for her beef tartare.
She notes that Brian is also making beef tartare and admits that she isn’t sure what he is putting on there. “I do know the guy is kind of Add, he has a lot going on in his head.” We witness Brian taken out fermented egg yolks from a container. “Everything’s coming together,” he says. “Chop up a few things, some herbs. I’m going to be ready right on time.”

But now they have added another component of the “Top Chef” experience with an after-show aperitif, if you will, served by head judge Tom Colicchio. A five-time recipient of the James Beard Foundation Award who has been on the show since it began in 2006, he usually delivers the most spot-on criticism as well as sincere compliments while sampling the dishes that are put in front of him. This no-nonsense guy and his taste buds are almost always right. But while we often get to see Tom eating, we rarely if ever see this culinary superstar behind a stove.

Given that this season of Bravo’s “Top Chef” features 15 culinary whizzes from seasons past who just missed winning in their previous appearances, it is going to hurt every time one of these All Stars are sent packing. That is how I felt when Season 15 veteran Joe Sasto, he of the fab handlebar mustache and a knack for making fresh pasta was given the heave-ho on the March 19 premiere.
It’s true the Lost Angeles-based chef, who specializes in modern Italian cuisine, did commit several cooking sins both during the quickfire challenge and during the elimination round. In the quickfire, he chose to roll out fresh pasta and cook it without knowing how much time his team had to finish. Judge Padma Lakshmi was visibly displeased and described his homemade noodles as being “doughy, dry and chewy.” Luckily, his team made up for his flaws and won the challenge.

When you are faced with a season of “Top Chef” All Stars who just missed taking the top prize, it’s going to cut deep when the first returnee has to go. That is the case of Joe Sasto, a Los Angeles-based chef who came in third on Season 15, which took place in Colorado. Known for his handle-bar mustache and knack for making fresh pasta, Joe won four elimination challenges and one quickfire during his first time on the Bravo reality show but was sent home for his vegetarian beet dish that he served at Aspen’s Food & Wine Classic. This specialist in modern Italian cuisine has worked in a three-Michelin star restaurant and did we say that he really likes to make his own pasta?

This week on 'Iron Chef America' (Sun., 10Pm Et on Food) Chef Marc Forgione took on 'Top Chef' fan favorite Lee Anne Wong in Battle Halloween.
Kathy Griffin and Kelly Ripa were given the task of judging a range of dishes all prepared using the secret ingredient: Halloween candy.
We love Chef Wong, but honestly didn't think her duck liver pâté on crostini looked too appetizing: The strawberry hard candy gastrique lent it an unpleasant bloody tinge. Still, given some of the secret ingredients in the past, the judging panel got off lightly.
Ripa joked that adding candy's "a great way to get your kids to eat pâté," while über-dieter Griffin didn't manage to convince us that she really is "a pâté fanatic." Forgione's offerings, however, seemed to fare better with the ladies. Did he take home the title?

Congratulations - or should we say bon appétit? - to 2006 Top Chef winner Harold Dieterle, who tied the knot with fellow foodie and longtime girlfriend Meredith Lynn Davies Saturday. In traditional Southern style, the pair married in Davies's hometown, Atlanta, at a downtown church. They then celebrated their nuptials at a reception held at the Capital City Country Club, where Davies donned a Pnina Tornai gown, and Dieterle wore a Paul Stuart white dinner jacket. And the wedding ceremony was a Top Chef affair: Fellow season one competitors Lee Anne Wong and Stephen Asprinio were among the 175 guests to attend.
