The visual effects team on Furious 7 have opened up about the amount of work that went into the film on Paul Walker's scenes following his death.
Weta Digital, which famously did the effects for The Lord of the Rings trilogy, said that it was challenging as they did not have digital body scans of the late actor.
"We had to complete a performance - what Paul Walker would have done if he'd been able to continue. And it had to be his performance," Joe Letteri, Weta's senior VFX supervisor told Variety.
The technology "was barely possible last year when we did it", Letteri adds.
Weta talked about the producers wanting to respect the film they had set out to make and include as much of Walker as possible in scenes he hadn't filmed following his death in 2013 after a car accident.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences named the 19 achievements that will be celebrated by the Academy at the Scientific and Technical Awards Presentation Saturday, Feb. 15.
The awards will be presented separately from the Oscars, and are, indeed, awarded through a different process. The technologies honored do not need to have been invented in the year 2013 to win, rather, they need to have been proven to be vital contributions to filmmaking.
“This year’s honorees have in a myriad of ways enabled today’s moviegoing experience. Their efforts have advanced not only the art and science of motion pictures, but the work of countless global industries,” proclaimed Richard Edlund, the Scientific and Technical Awards Committee Chair, himself an Oscar-winner for his work in visual effects.

If you didn't tune in for the Academy Awards last night, here's a short breakdown of what you missed: William Shatner showed up from the future, Jennifer Lawrence tripped and fell, and Michelle Obama co-presented the award for Best Picture. It was kind of a weird night, but for the most part, the hardware was handed out to all of the expected parties. Argo won Best Picture, Daniel Day-Lewis won Best Actor and Jennifer Lawrence won Best Actress. If there was a surprise, it was that Life of Pi walked away with the most awards (4) including Best Director for Ang Lee. Zero Dark Thirty got shut out of everything except for Best Sound Editing (in a rare tie with Skyfall). Quentin Tarantino was also a pleasant surprise for Best Original Screenplay. What did you think of this year's Oscars? What was the highlight of the night? How would you rate Seth McFarlane as host?...

This evening’s Oscar ceremony is now over, and with the dust settling on the biggest awards ceremony of the entire year, and the winners and losers celebrating and commiserating together, we’ve put together a full list of the winners (as well as the beaten nominees) for this year’s awards.
Jennifer Lawrence and Jessica Chastain nailed the red carpet, apparently, and Sandra Bullock did wonderful things with a diamond hair-clip, while Bradley Cooper and Chris Pine both proved that beards are very much the hot thing right now. But the big events were yet to happen inside the La venue, as the audience sat ready to receive host Seth MacFarlane, and his inevitably cutting humour.
For the most part, MacFarlane was reserved, though a few barbs did land before the end of the night. He played his part also in the excellent musical staging throughout the ceremony, whose highlights featured Shirley Bassey,...

I've enjoyed watching the Academy Awards for as long as I can remember. Even though I don't always agree with their decisions, it's still a fun experience for me. This year Emma Stone and Seth MacFarlane woke up at the buttcrack of dawn to give us the nominations for the 85th Academy Awards, I however didn't wake up to watch because I was just too damn tired.
There's a lot of great movies that were nominated this year and Lincoln leads the pack with 12 nominations which isn't surprising at all. Life of Pi ended up getting 11 noms, Les Miserables got 8, Silver Linings Playbook got 8 as well, Argo ended up with 7, Zero Dark Thirty has 5, Skyfall got 5, Django Unchained got 5 and The Avengers got 1.

Seth MacFarlane and Emma Stone took the stage at the Samuel Goldwyn Theater in Beverly Hills this morning to announce this year's Academy Award nominations, and they played out almost exactly as everyone expected. Steven Spielberg's Lincoln led the way with 12 nominations including Best Picture, Best Director and another Best Actor nod for Daniel Day-Lewis. Ang Lee's Life of Pi was up for 11 awards, while David O. Russell's Silver Linings Playbook and Tom Hooper's Les Miserables received 8 nominations apiece. There were a total of 9 Best Picture nominees this year, and if there were any surprises they would probably be Beasts of the Southern Wild and Amour. Django Unchained was also in the mix, although Quentin Tarantino was ignored for Best Director. On the bright side, Joaquin Phoenix, Philip Seymour Hoffman and Amy Adams were all recognized for their performances in The Master, although the movie itself received no love.

As promised, host Seth MacFarlane and Emma Stone announced the 2013 Oscar nominees at the Academy Awards' annual press conference first thing this morning. There'll be plenty of time for "I can't believe they didn't nominate so-and-so!" and "Oh my gosh, so-and-so is totally going to win such-and-such!" later… once we've had a little bit more coffee. In the meantime, here are this year's nominees:

Seth MacFarlane and Emma Stone announced the 85th Academy Awards nominations this morning, and absolutely no one should be surprised that a movie directed by Steven Spielberg, starring Daniel Day-Lewis and based on the life of one of the most universally admired people on the planet garnered the most nods. Lincoln garnered 12 nominations, including Best Picture, directing, acting and supporting actors (Sally Field and Tommy Lee Jones) — really they owe it all to the beard, don’t they? Life of Pi, Silver Linings Playbook and Django Unchained followed in the nod count. We’ll get to the surprising snubs in a minute, but first, take a look at the full nominations list and marvel along with Emma that every single one of the supporting actor nominees has won an award before:

Audiences are still asking questions about "Prometheus," which probably says everything you need to know about Ridley Scott's confounding, fascinating and frustrating return to science fiction. Now, at least one of those queries has an answer: Just what did David say to the Engineer in "Prometheus"?
In the scene, David (Michael Fassbender) awakens an Engineer from stasis at the behest of Peter Weyland (Guy Pearce). He then asks the Engineer a question, which prompts the muscular alien to -- Spoiler -- tear David's head off and go on a killing spree. Oops.
Stu Holmes at The Bioscopist tracked down Dr. Anil Biltoo -- the London-based linguistics expert who taught actor Michael Fassbender the Proto-Indo-European language that David speaks in the film -- who revealed that the happy android said the following during his big moment with the Engineer:
"This man is here because he does not want to die.

Visual effects supervisor Martin Hill: "Because we had such a short amount of time to tell the story of the DNA getting infected, breaking apart, and then re-forming and recombining to show Earth DNA, we had to make the designs of the different DNA quite graphical, quite illustrative of what they were." "The Engineer's DNA, we thought, 'This needs to be quite sinister, but we know it's going to get infected, and the infection has to look more messed up than the Engineer's DNA. We used quite a light color palette for Engineer's DNA, and then the infection comes on and it's very melted looking. Ridley actually said to us, 'It has to feel like war in there. The DNA is just being torn apart.'" "We try to use as much reality as possible, so we were looking at all different kinds of reference, so eventually we settled on fish bones,...

I just saw Prometheus for a second time, and I liked it even more than the first time around. It really was a fun film to watch, and it has sparked some interesting conversations. Today we bring you a couple of awesome behind the scenes videos that give us a look inside the films visual effects, which were done incredibly well! I loved the effects in the film!
The first video includes an interview with Weta Digital Visual Effects Supervisor Martin Hill, and he talks about the opening sequence of the film and the dissolving DNA of the sacrificial Engineer.
The second video has an interview with Visual Effects Supervisor Charley Henley from Mpc (The Moving Picture Company). He gives us an inside look at the landing of the Prometheus ship on Lv-223, the finale crash sequence as well as a few other things.

Prometheus is dipping at the box-office this weekend, but it remains one of the more interesting films of the year for the ideas it inspires, but more importantly the fact it has people talking, something hard to come by when it comes to blockbuster cinema. Well, I've got something else for you to chew on as The Daily has scored a pair of visual effects "making of" videos. The first of which features Weta Digital Visual Effects Supervisor Martin Hill discussing the opening sequence in which the sacrificial Engineer dissolves and his DNA is destroyed. The second takes a look at the landing of the Prometheus ship on Lv-223, the finale crash sequence and more with Visual Effects Supervisor Charley Henley from Mpc (The Moving Picture Company).
