Following his acclaimed debut feature “Der Bunker,” Germany’s Nikias Chryssos’ returns to dark fables with a timely tale of a mysterious cult in “A Pure Place.”
The offbeat coming-of-age tale follows two young siblings who live in a secret community on a remote Greek island, isolated from the rest of the world, which they consider impure and dangerous.
Chryssos, who stems from a Greek-German family, describes “A Pure Place” as a “magical, poetic” story inspired by Greek mythology that explores “the contrast between light and darkness, cleanliness and purity.”
In the film, the pristine community on the island is served by child slaves who toil down in the darkness below. The young boy Paul, played by Claude Heinrich, must challenge the obsessive community in order to free his sister Irina (Greta Bohacek) from the nefarious machinations of the cult leader (Sam Louwyck).

Tragicomedy “The Favourite” has walked away with four craft prizes – cinematography, editing, costume design, and hair and makeup – of the European Film Awards. The craft awards were decided by a jury drawn from various below-the-line professions. The 32nd European Film Awards will take place on Dec. 7 in Berlin.
Robbie Ryan picked up the cinematography prize, with the jury saying that he and director Yorgos Lanthimos were “committed to stay as far away from the photographic conventions of a period drama as they could.”
The jury added that it is “both inspiring and encouraging to see how strong imagery and bold cinematographic choices did not take away from the drama, but reinforced it.” The film’s use of natural light and candlelight was “reminiscent of Kubrick’s masterpiece ‘Barry Lyndon,'” the jury said.

Both the title and premise of Swiss director Nicolas Steiner’s latest documentary mildly echoes the recently released and quickly disregarded found footage horror schlock As Above, So Below, but his Rotterdam premiered endeavor is more heady, heartfelt and a hell of a lot more beautiful in every respect. Weaving together the unconventional lives of the unfortunates subsisting in the subterranean underbelly of Las Vegas and the desolate deserts that surround the city of sin, Above and Below evokes the sly scifi documentation of the daily routine found in Yuri Ancarani’s evocative Platform Moon while posing its own inquisitions into the social stratospheres of dereliction by casting its varying subjects as nothing less than aliens autonomously banished for shame or self preservation.
Steiner’s focus rotates between the dark and soggy sewer dwelling couple Rick and Cindy, their respected tunnel bound neighbor, Godfather Lalo, a former drug addicted truck...
